Service Saturday With Copper Country Humane Society!
Looking for a fun and meaningful way to give back to the local community? Join us for an afternoon of volunteering with the Copper Country Humane Society! This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of animals in need while connecting with fellow Huskies and getting involved in the community.

Your time and care can help make the shelter a more comfortable, welcoming place for the animals as they await their forever homes.
- Sat, Nov 7, 2026, 1:00-3:30 PM
- Check-in Location: MUB Circle
- Check-in Time: 12:40 PM
After checking in at the MUB Circle, volunteers will drive together to the Copper Country Humane Society to begin the afternoon’s activities.

Don’t Miss Your Chance to Cast Your Ballot!
The Election is next Tuesday, November 3rd. If you haven’t voted yet, you’re running out of time to make your voice heard!
Vote Early
Early voting in Michigan is available now through November 1st at your early voting location. To find your early voting site, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center and click on “your voter information.” If you are voting in Houghton County, your early voting site is the Houghton County Building located at 19741 W. Sharon Avenue Houghton, Michigan 49931. Hours vary by location.
Not voting in Michigan? Check to see if you can vote early in your state.
Voting on Election Day
If you are planning to vote on Election Day, November 3rd, you will need to find your polling place and polling hours. Your polling place is based on your residential address and assigned by your state or local election office. This location cannot be changed unless you update your residential address on your voter registration. ID requirements for voting vary by state. Check if and what forms of ID are needed where you plan to vote. The most common ID used in Michigan is a Driver’s License.
Planning to vote absentee or in another location, but realized it’s no longer feasible?
It is not too late to register in the local area and cast your ballot here. If you live in Houghton, you can visit the city clerk at the Houghton City Center to register. You will need to provide proof of residency, such as a lease agreement or utility bill. These records can be pulled up digitally on a cell phone. The city clerk’s business hours are Monday-Friday 8AM-4:30PM with special pre-election weekend hours also available on November 1 from 8AM-4PM. You can also register on Election Day until the polls close.
Need a Ride to Your Polling Place?
If you’re voting locally, the Husky Campus Shuttle, City Commuter Shuttle and the Hancock Commuter Shuttle will all be in operation on Election Day to help you get to and from the polls.
- Houghton Precinct 1 at the Houghton Fire Hall is less than a ten minute walk from the Champion St & Diamond Ave stop
- Houghton Precinct 2 at the Dee Stadium is less than a five minute walk from the Houghton City Center stop
- Hancock City Precincts at Lakeview Manor are less than a five minute walk from the Atlantic St stop
Check the times and your schedule now so you don’t miss the bus! Evening shuttle schedules are limited and do not make all of the same stops.
If the shuttle won’t work for you, the Huskies Vote group has Lyft codes available to get you to and from your polling location which will cover up to $15 each way. They can be used now through election day between the hours of 7 AM and 8 PM. Need a code? Email us at activities@mtu.edu with the subject line “Lyft to the Polls” to receive one. A limited number are available and they may only be used to get you to and from a polling place.

Five Reasons to Check Out the 41 North Film Festival
The 41 North Film Festival returns to Michigan Tech November 5–8, bringing four days of extraordinary films to the Rozsa Center. Whether you’re a film buff or just looking for something fun and interesting to do, here are five reasons to check it out.
1. A Michigan Tech success story. Breaking the Code tells the remarkable story of Michigan Tech alumnus Kanwal Rekhi, whose journey from India to Silicon Valley helped shape the technology industry. It’s a story of innovation, entrepreneurship, and making your own way.
2. Movies that are weird, wild, and wildly entertaining. Catch Bugonia and The Peril at Pincer Point for some offbeat narrative filmmaking. Fans of HBO’s How To with John Wilson should check out his new feature, The History of Concrete, told in Wilson’s wry, absurdist style, while Joybubbles tells the fascinating story of a blind man whose extraordinary ability to whistle telephone tones helped pioneer phone hacking.
3. New takes on cult classics, cookies, and Disney. In Time Warp, a queer theater company in small-town Wyoming stages a shadow production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in a spirited documentary about identity and community. Cookie Queens brings competition and ambition to the world of Girl Scout cookies, while Runa Simi follows an effort to bring Disney’s The Lion King to Quechua-speaking audiences.
4. A tasting menu. The festival’s short-film programs offer a chance to sample an eclectic mix of stories, including award-winning films that have been making waves on the festival circuit: Terms and Conditions, The Kids Are Alright, and Winter Is Coming. Or explore local food systems with the new documentary Fork in the Road, and stop by the mini-farmers market in the Rozsa Lobby from 5:30–7:15 p.m.
5. It’s FREE! Every screening is free and open to students and the community. No tickets, no subscriptions, no excuses. Just show up, bring a friend, and enjoy some great movies.

MTU’s First Fire Safety Prevention Week Highlights Lithium-Ion Safety on Campus
As part of our commitment to campus safety, Michigan Tech is hosting its first annual Fire Safety Prevention Week next week, from Oct. 26-30, held in coordination with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
This year’s national theme ”Lithium Battery Charging Safety,” directly addresses the risks we face in our offices, labs, and residence halls. While lithium-ion batteries provide an effective and efficient source of power, they can become a safety hazard when damaged or improperly used, charged, or stored.
Not all battery damage is visible from the outside of a device. It’s possible for devices that are not plugged in, show no visible damage, and are working normally to experience sudden internal battery failure, known as thermal runaway.
Thermal runaway occurs when a lithium-ion battery cell overheats internally and rapidly self-accelerates. Even small consumer devices can reach temperatures exceeding 500 degrees Fahrenheit, releasing flammable gases and dense smoke. These failures can occur without warning, even when a device is not charging or in use.
Lithium-ion battery hazards are real, but preventable. Throughout Fire Safety Prevention Week, MTU Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will offer hands-on demonstrations, safety resources, and practical tips to build safer charging habits across campus.
Visit the MTU EHS website for event schedules and downloadable safety guides. Simple precautions in our shared spaces go a long way toward keeping all Huskies safe!
On Wednesday (10/28/26) and Thursday (10/29/26), join EHS for Pizza and Fire Extinguisher Training in the HSTEM from 6pm to 7pm. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher and win prizes and enjoy pizza.

Be a part of the action and volunteer with 41 North Film Festival! This year’s festival will take place Thursday, Nov. 5-Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Rozsa Center, and we need your help to make it happen! We welcome film enthusiasts, members of the campus community, and local area residents. Individuals and groups are invited to join us as volunteers.
Our volunteers help us keep 41 North free and open to the public and are an integral part of the festival. Volunteers may assist with welcoming festival attendees, ushering, and answering general questions. Help is needed for all four days of the festival; volunteer for one film or for the whole festival—it’s up to you!
Registration opens for the general public on Tuesday, Oct. 20. You can sign up to support single films directly through GivePulse!
What do I do when volunteering at the 41N?
As a Volunteer Usher, you play a critical role in creating a joyful experience at arts events. With Rozsa and 41N leadership, you and other Ushers work together to greet guests, admit folks into the theater, assist with seating and wayfinding, connect guests to venue accommodations, and support effective crowd flow and emergency procedures. Usher roles will be decided as a team at the beginning of the volunteer shift.
Do I do this alone or with other people?
Each show will have a 41 North Volunteer Coordinator, Front of House Lead, and 6-8 volunteer ushers, so you will never be alone! You are always welcome to put together a group—friends, family, or people from an organization—and enjoy the shared experience of bringing a production to life.
What do I wear and bring?
Wear clothes and shoes that you’re comfortable in! Please make sure they are free from stains and tears. Layers are encouraged. 41N volunteers will be provided with a smock to wear during your shift(s). You are welcome to bring a water bottle, and we encourage you to leave valuables at home.
How do I prepare for the event?
No experience is needed. All the training you need will take place the day of the show, before guests arrive. Ensure you arrive at or before the shift start time, and check in with the Volunteer Coordinator in the Rozsa Lobby for a brief orientation.
The 41 North Film Festival spans four days and showcases award-winning independent films and filmmakers from around the region, country, and world. Its mission is to provide Michigan Tech students and the surrounding community with an opportunity to critically engage with films that are currently in distribution and under discussion, as well as the chance to interact with filmmakers, producers, and other industry professionals about the art and business of cinematic storytelling.
Questions can be directed to our Volunteer Coordinator, Allison Neely, at alneely@mtu.edu.
