The application for the 2023 – 2024 Michigan Collegiate Student Advisory Task Force is now available for current college and university students. The nonpartisan task force, led by the Michigan Department of State and Bureau of Elections, brings together students from across the state who are passionate about civic engagement. Appointed students will work through 2024 to improve youth voter engagement on their campuses and across the state. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15 at 11:59pm.

Students can apply by visiting Michigan.gov/CSATF. More information is also available in the press release below. For answers to frequently asked questions, please visit Michigan.gov/CSATF.

Michigan Collegiate Student Advisory Task Force returns for 2023-2024

Department of State now accepting applications from students looking to engage voters on campus

LANSING, Mich. – Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today announced the application period to serve on the 2023-2024 Michigan Collegiate Student Advisory Task Force is now open to college and university students across the state. The task force is a nonpartisan initiative of the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) in partnership with Campus Vote Project (CVP), a project of the Fair Elections Center, a national, nonpartisan voting rights organization. The student task force will work through the 2024 election cycle to improve youth voter engagement. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15.

“It’s critical that today’s young voters are also informed voters, and this task force helps young people better understand the process and truly engage in our democracy,” said Secretary Benson. “We look forward to hearing directly from the new class of task force members on the best ways to support and empower students at Michigan colleges and universities, help them fully understand our state’s new voting rights laws, and know exactly how to exercise their rights.”

The task force, first established by Benson in 2019, brings together students from across the state who are passionate about civic engagement. Task force members will serve as liaisons between MDOS, their student body, school administrators, and peers. The group will advise on the unique experiences and barriers for student voters, helping to ensure the voices of young people are heard in our state’s elections.

Appointed students will serve on the task force with optional enrollment in a paid CVP Democracy Fellowship from September 2023 through December 2024. As a Democracy Fellow, students will be provided the tools to turn their civic engagement ideas into action. Democracy Fellows will work to remove on-campus voting barriers, to educate their peers about elections, and to build a campus coalition to support student voter engagement.

“The Campus Vote Project team is excited to partner with Secretary Benson to provide more opportunities for student leaders who are committed to expanding voting access for their peers,” said Landon Myers, Michigan Coordinator for CVP. “If Michigan is going to maintain the nation’s highest youth voter turnout in 2024, we must continue empowering students to organize their campus communities and remove barriers to voting.”

Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in a college or university in Michigan and demonstrate a commitment to voting and enthusiasm for voter engagement through their past experience, answers to application questions, and an interview. A total of 20 to 30 students from around the state will be selected to serve, with no more than two students representing any one school. Students set to graduate during the tenure of the task force will not be considered.

Additional information, as well as the task force application, can be found at Michigan.gov/SOSStudentTaskForce. Students can also email Secretary@Michigan.gov with questions or comments. The application period will close on Friday, Sept. 15 at 11:59 p.m.

Collegiate DECA Little Caesars Pizza Kit Fundraiser

Like Pizza? Cheese Bread? Maybe even cookies? Starting today and for the next 3 weeks, MTU’s Collegiate DECA chapter is selling Little Caesars Pizza Kits and In-Store Meal Deals to raise money for our members to attend our first DECA Engage Conference in Kansas City this year. To reach our goal of selling 84 kits, we need everyone’s help. This is a digital fundraiser and so all orders are placed online and kits will be shipped to buyers via FedEx with the exception of In-Store Meal Deals being able to be picked up from local Little Caesars near you. Kits are easy to make, requiring just the spread of toppings, and ready to be placed in the oven. These kits would be perfect for dinner if you’re looking for something quick to make. It could even be a fun activity for families to participate in! Every kit or In-Store Meal Deal sold, the MTU DECA earns $6 in profits, and that makes a HUGE impact! Please consider sharing with family, friends, and anyone you think may be interested. This fundraiser is open to all.

To view our kits and place an order, follow this link here or scan the QR Code in the flyer attached to this email. This fundraiser ends September 13th so be sure to purchase your kits before then! For any questions about our fundraiser, contact deca@mtu.edu.

The MTU DECA team thanks you for your support!

RSO Re-registration Now Open

The clock is ticking, so don’t delay! Re-registration is a simple yet crucial task that ensures your organization’s continuity. By completing this process, you’re taking a proactive step toward a successful year filled with enriching activities and impactful initiatives.

Re-registration is available on Involvement Link as well as through the link on the email you have received.

Remember, your dedication as RSO officers and advisors is what keeps the org thriving, and re-registration is the first step in that journey. Let’s work together to make this academic year one to remember!

All RSO officers and advisors must complete the re-registration process by September 18th at 8 AM. Missing this deadline will lead to a deduction of funds allocated to your org. We understand that time is precious, but acting promptly is crucial to maintaining your org’s active status.

If you have any questions or encounter any issues during the re-registration process, don’t hesitate to reach out to rso@mtu.edu or stop in our office, MUB 112. We’re here to assist you every step of the way.

Here’s to another fantastic year of collaboration, growth, and achievement. Happy re-registering!

Let’s Rebuild Community Painting Day

The Let’s Rebuild Community project seeks to revitalize homes and our community by supporting low-income seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities in protecting their homes as an asset and a source of pride. They seek to make repairs that are high impact and of high aesthetic value while improving safety and health in and around the home. The program relies on the labor of volunteers to assist in project completion.

For 2023, four homes have been identified in Calumet and Laurium. The next day of service will be primarily focused on painting and is this Saturday, August 12th from 8 AM until 4:30 PM. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided to the volunteers and each person will also receive a free t-shirt. Please register on GivePulse if you are able to support this meaningful work!

Volunteers will meet at 8 AM for breakfast, house assignments, and t-shirts at Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet (26016 Depot Street). All necessary tools needed as well as gloves, water, and snacks will be provided. Please wear durable clothing that you do not mind getting dirty as well as closed-toed, durable shoes. Volunteers are needed to help take apart the current bridge and reassemble a new bridge. This is a great opportunity for anyone to gain community service hours. Volunteers do not need experience with handling tools to help with the project.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own equipment but are not required to do so. Times for the project are listed below, volunteers can arrive and leave whenever. Snacks will be available but meals will not be provided. Closed-toed shoes and long pants are required. Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended.

If you have any questions, please email bbeagle2023@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for any help!

Summer Service Opportunities

Several community members have reached out to SLI requesting assistance with summer projects. Have some extra time? Give back to the Keweenaw community this summer!

Projects include:

  • Helping a lovely, elderly gentleman and his wife with yard clean up and perhaps some painting projects. He is located in Keweenaw Bay (about 20 minutes south on US 41) and would have all of the tools necessary to complete the work. They are open to any prearranged date and time. He estimated 3-6 volunteers would be ideal for a couple hours of work- more are welcome, but the projects will be finished faster.
  • The Hanka Homestead is preparing to open over Memorial Weekend. In advance of opening, they are hoping to rebuild 300-400 feet of split rail cedar fencing. They are hoping to have a group of 4-5 individuals assist over a few days or perhaps a larger group over a day or two. Supplies will be provided and we can provide work gloves for any volunteers as well.

If you’re interested in supporting either of these projects individually or as a group email us at huskyhelpers@mtu.edu and we can get you in contact!

A new organization focusing on revitalizing our communities is also seeking volunteers for their two summer project days: July 29th and August 12th. These are full days of service from ~8AM-3PM. Breakfast, lunch, a t-shirt, and all necessary supplies are provided. Sign-up is available on GivePulse at the preceding links.

Crowdsourcing Tick Project at MTU

The Genomic Sequencing lab wants ticks from you, your family, and your pets. The goal of this project is to identify the prevalence of tick-borne illnesses in the copper country. Starting May 1st and ending September 30th please bring any ticks you find to the collection boxes on the MTU campus:

1.    U.J. Noblet Forestry Building– Main Entrance

2.    Great Lakes Research Center, 100 Phoenix Dr – Building Lobby

The collection begins May 1st and ends September 30th.

How to remove and preserve ticks

1.    Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible.

2.    Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you cannot remove the mouth easily with tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.

3.    After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

4.    Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of a live tick by

  • Placing it in a sealed bag ziploc bag, multiple ticks from the same location source can be placed in the same bag
  • Bring tick into drop off point within 8 hours or place tick in a sealed bag, in freezer until dropping off at Michigan Tech

5.    Drop off points at MTU:

  • U.J. Noblet Forestry Building– Main Entrance
  • Great Lakes Research Center, 100 Phoenix Dr – Building Lobby

6.    Follow directions at the dropoff site to ensure the tick is properly preserved.
