Michigan Tech Snapchat Takeovers

Do you want to raise awareness about your organization or event? Attract more members? Show others the great things you’re doing? University Marketing and Communications is looking for responsible, outgoing students, faculty, or staff willing to run a Snapchat Takeover. University Snapchat Coordinator Megan Ross works with campus groups to organize awareness-raising Snapchat Takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With more than 2,500 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach other students. We’ve had students and groups run takeovers in other countries through IPS, promote Enterprise competitions with the Concrete Canoe team, share their work with Summer Youth Programs, show incoming students what the Residence Education and OTL teams are preparing, and much more. To run a Snapchat Takeover, all you need to do is identify who will run the takeover and choose a time slot of one to three days where that person can highlight your organization or event. Then go online to check availability, fill out the request form and contract, and review our tips and tricks. Email socialnetwork@mtu.edu with any questions.

An Afternoon on the Town

On Saturday, August 29th starting at 10:00 AM the annual Welcome Week event, An Afternoon on the Town, will take place virtually.  Students will engage with a virtual map to learn about local businesses and organizations to welcome new students and returning students prior to the fall semester. The virtual map can be found here. There will be an opportunity for students to enter to win prizes by filling out the Prize Form before 3 p.m. on Saturday. The map will be accessible after the Prize Form closes. “An Afternoon on the Town” is sponsored by Student Leadership and Involvement, Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success and Residence Education and Housing Services.

Covid-19 Course For Students

Given the amount of misinformation out there and the impact of COVID-19 on our students lives and therefore their potential interest in the topic, we have developed a 1-credit ‘town hall’ style course for this fall on COVID-19 (UN 3990 COVID-10 Impact & Response). The course is remote, offered on Thursday evenings. Each week 2-4 guests will give a short talk on related topics and then we will have a moderated Q&A period. The topics will cover diverse aspects of the virus and the impacts on our communities and populations. Speakers will include faculty, public health professionals, community experts, and local clinicians.

Student News Brief Update!

The Student News Brief, a weekly electronic publication sent out to all current students is getting an update that includes a new name!  The Student News Brief will now be The Student Scoop and will be sent out weekly on Wednesday mornings.  The Student Scoop provides an opportunity for Registered Student Organizations to submit events, fundraisers, and reminders that are focused on students and student events.

The changes will begin next week, August 26 and all submissions for The Student Scoop should be sent in by noon on Tuesday to be published in that week’s blog. To submit a Student News Brief article, please email activities@mtu.edu. Please include your article and feel free to attach an image – either a JPG or PNG (MAX size 2MB) if you have one.

Drive Date: Saturday, June 27th from 9am – 5pm in Fisher Hall

Please continue collecting these items for the drive: foil-lined granola/energy bar wrappers, batteries, plastic caps and rings, Styrofoam and cardboard egg cartons, and any plastic bag containing a recycling number.  If you are no longer able to hold on to your items or you will not be in the Keweenaw on the day of the drive, please contact sdh@mtu.edu and we will work with you to take your items off your hands.

K-Day Registration

K-Day Registration is officially open, so reserve your spot now!  Space and resources are limited, so do not delay!  

K-Day, or Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition that will be held on Friday, September 11 beginning at noon. Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music.  K-day typically sees 3500-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before  registering HERE.  

Keep in mind, the person you list as the primary contact for your organization’s registration will be the one receiving all communications.  They will need to keep an eye out for emails during the summer in case of any changes that are made to K-Day due to the fall semester start date. 

Get ready because with this year’s theme you will be crossing over into… The Involvement Zone!  Organizations can get creative with this science fiction and fantasy themed student organization fair!

Love in the Time of COVID-19: A Virtual Poetry Reading

As we face a new normal to our day-to-day lives, maintaining a creative, expressive, and connected community has taken on new meaning and importance.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Amy L. Howard (Center for Diversity and Inclusion) and M. Bartley Seigel (Department of Humanities) cordially invite you to submit work for participation in a virtual poetry reading engaging any facet of life and love in the time of Covid-19.

Anyone may submit a poem for this virtual reading. You may submit either an original poem or a favorite poem that has spoken to you during this difficult time. This reading is about community, feeling, healing, loving, and connecting, and we wish all individuals to feel empowered either as poets themselves or as avid readers of poetry.

Please note, by submitting a poem for possible inclusion, you are agreeing to be available to read that poem in person via the Zoom event.

The virtual poetry reading will be held Friday, April 24th at 4pm via Zoom.

This event is open to all. Selected poets MUST be available to read in person via Zoom. Please submit the following Google Form to participate!

Virtual Spring Fling!

The first ever “Virtual Spring Fling” is happening, and it’s time to have all hands on deck for this year’s Pirates Edition! This event is brought to you by MUB Board (Memorial Union Board), and is a chance for you to promote your organization. Check your email for all of the details!!!

Instead of doing a booth competition and presenting your org at tables on campus, we will be having a virtual poster event with added competition for the best posters. The posters which best match the theme of pirates will have a chance to win money for their organization! First place is $125 and Second place is $75! Additionally, if your poster receives the most likes from our Facebook post your organization will get to select the location of your booth at next year’s spring fling!

Intramural Rocket League Info

Michigan Tech Intramurals is happy to announce that we will be offering Rocket League Tournaments. The attached link is a sign-up sheet for the tournaments so we can get a rough estimate of how many people will be participating, their skill level and what platform they will be using. Feel free to inform other Michigan Tech students who you would think would be interested. 

This is a general sign-up sheet, it is to get a rough estimate of how many people are interested.

If everything goes well these next couple of days we should be starting this coming week.

The sign-up sheet is to get a general count of people who want to play in these tournaments. The tournaments will be divided by skill level, grouping some ranks together to make it more fair. There is now a category of what game mode you play. Your team will be based upon who is in your party at the start of the tournament. These tournaments will be private so there will be a name and password associated to be able to join. The name and password will be provided via IMLeagues in some way. If you have any questions you can reply to this announcement.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Michigan Tech is planning to host virtual events educate the campus community to prevent sexual violence. 

Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29

Michigan Tech Title IX invites you to wear denim with a purpose on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 for International Denim Day to support survivors and educate our community about the forms of sexual violence. Denim Day was founded after a 1999 Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Enraged by the verdict, within hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, organized the country’s first Denim Day event in 1999. You can find more information about Denim Day here. Please join us in wearing denim proudly on April 29.

Campus Store Course Material Updates – Buyback and Rentals

RENTAL RETURNS
Students who have rented books for the Spring Term will be required to return those books to Public Safety by May 15, 2020.  Students have a two week extension for rental returns.  Students who have left campus will be asked to ship their books back to the store, while those who remain on campus will have a drop location at Public Safety while the campus store is closed. We are planning in the event that we are unable to reopen, or for students who have returned to their permanent home. During this process, both the Campus Store and Public Safety will ensure adherence to the Governor’s order of social distancing, and respect safety guidelines for handling rental returns. These steps include, keeping a 6′ distance and disinfecting books. Students will receive communication regarding their rentals with instructions for proper returns. If students reach out to faculty to questions regarding their rental books, please have them contact Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store.  

BUYBACK
Students will now have the chance to sell their used textbooks through an online buyback program. Michigan Tech Campus Bookstore has partnered with two used textbook wholesalers who are offering students the opportunity to sell their books back without leaving their home. The Campus Store website will allow students to compare prices to both Nebraska Book Company and MBS Book Exchange. Both companies will allow students to print off a return label for free shipping. Love in the Time of COVID-19: A Virtual Poetry Reading

As we face a new normal to our day-to-day lives, maintaining a creative, expressive, and connected community has taken on new meaning and importance.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Amy L. Howard (Center for Diversity and Inclusion) and M. Bartley Seigel (Department of Humanities) cordially invite you to submit work for participation in a virtual poetry reading engaging any facet of life and love in the time of Covid-19.

Anyone may submit a poem for this virtual reading. You may submit either an original poem or a favorite poem that has spoken to you during this difficult time. This reading is about community, feeling, healing, loving, and connecting, and we wish all individuals to feel empowered either as poets themselves or as avid readers of poetry.

Please note, by submitting a poem for possible inclusion, you are agreeing to be available to read that poem in person via the Zoom event.

The virtual poetry reading will be held Friday, April 24th at 4pm via Zoom.

This event is open to all. Selected poets MUST be available to read in person via Zoom. Please submit the following Google Form to participate!

Virtual Spring Fling!

The first ever “Virtual Spring Fling” is happening, and it’s time to have all hands on deck for this year’s Pirates Edition! This event is brought to you by MUB Board (Memorial Union Board), and is a chance for you to promote your organization. Check your email for all of the details!!!

Instead of doing a booth competition and presenting your org at tables on campus, we will be having a virtual poster event with added competition for the best posters. The posters which best match the theme of pirates will have a chance to win money for their organization! First place is $125 and Second place is $75! Additionally, if your poster receives the most likes from our Facebook post your organization will get to select the location of your booth at next year’s spring fling!

Intramural Rocket League Info

Michigan Tech Intramurals is happy to announce that we will be offering Rocket League Tournaments. The attached link is a sign-up sheet for the tournaments so we can get a rough estimate of how many people will be participating, their skill level and what platform they will be using. Feel free to inform other Michigan Tech students who you would think would be interested. 

This is a general sign-up sheet, it is to get a rough estimate of how many people are interested.

If everything goes well these next couple of days we should be starting this coming week.

The sign-up sheet is to get a general count of people who want to play in these tournaments. The tournaments will be divided by skill level, grouping some ranks together to make it more fair. There is now a category of what game mode you play. Your team will be based upon who is in your party at the start of the tournament. These tournaments will be private so there will be a name and password associated to be able to join. The name and password will be provided via IMLeagues in some way. If you have any questions you can reply to this announcement.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled Michigan Tech Students are eligible to participate in Rocket League Tournaments. Full-Time Faculty and Staff may participate

Tournament Information: Join and/or create a team in the league that reflects your online rank in Rocket League.

Lower ranked players can join higher ranked tournaments.

All tournament matches will be 3 vs 3

There is a 2 vs 2 open division that is not divided by rank, any ranked player can team up and face off.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Michigan Tech is planning to host virtual events educate the campus community to prevent sexual violence. 

Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29

Michigan Tech Title IX invites you to wear denim with a purpose on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 for International Denim Day to support survivors and educate our community about the forms of sexual violence. Denim Day was founded after a 1999 Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Enraged by the verdict, within hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, organized the country’s first Denim Day event in 1999. You can find more information about Denim Day here. Please join us in wearing denim proudly on April 29.

Campus Store Course Material Updates – Buyback and Rentals

RENTAL RETURNS
Students who have rented books for the Spring Term will be required to return those books to Public Safety by May 15, 2020.  Students have a two week extension for rental returns.  Students who have left campus will be asked to ship their books back to the store, while those who remain on campus will have a drop location at Public Safety while the campus store is closed. We are planning in the event that we are unable to reopen, or for students who have returned to their permanent home. During this process, both the Campus Store and Public Safety will ensure adherence to the Governor’s order of social distancing, and respect safety guidelines for handling rental returns. These steps include, keeping a 6′ distance and disinfecting books. Students will receive communication regarding their rentals with instructions for proper returns. If students reach out to faculty to questions regarding their rental books, please have them contact Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store.  

BUYBACK
Students will now have the chance to sell their used textbooks through an online buyback program. Michigan Tech Campus Bookstore has partnered with two used textbook wholesalers who are offering students the opportunity to sell their books back without leaving their home. The Campus Store website will allow students to compare prices to both Nebraska Book Company and MBS Book Exchange. Both companies will allow students to print off a return label for free shipping. If you’d like to find out more, you can reach out to Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store or click here (https://www.bookstore.mtu.edu/michtech) During this time of social distancing, this is just one way the Campus Store is helping to smooth the transition for students by seeking new ways to offer services students depend on.

New Deadline for Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP) applications

The deadline for   Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP)  applications has been extended to April 20th.  

The program consists of a 20-week internship (Mid-September through Mid-March), a $1,600 stipend, and professional development activities centered in academic research and scholarship. The internship program is open to any undergraduate student on campus.

Applications are due by April 20 and include the following:

1.     Online Application Form

2.     Project Description

3.     Faculty Mentor Letter of Support

4.     Faculty Match Funding Acknowledgement

The Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN) is holding their annual RAINN Day on April 14, 2020. On April 14, Dial Help, Inc. and Michigan Tech Title IX are teaming up to host two Zoom meetings:

• RAINN Check from 7-8 PM

In these Zoom meetings, we will discuss self care, violence prevention and services available. Each session will hold space for questions from the audience.

The Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN) is holding their annual RAINN Day on April 14, 2020. On April 14, Dial Help, Inc. and Michigan Tech Title IX are teaming up to host two Zoom meetings:

• RAINN Check from 3-4 PM
• RAINN Check from 7-8 PM

In these Zoom meetings, we will discuss self care, violence prevention and services available. Each session will hold space for questions from the audience.

Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29

Michigan Tech Title IX invites you to wear denim with a purpose on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 for International Denim Day to support survivors and educate our community about the forms of sexual violence. Denim Day was founded after a 1999 Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Enraged by the verdict, within hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, organized the country’s first Denim Day event in 1999. You can find more information about Denim Day here. Please join us in wearing denim proudly on April 29.

Campus Store Course Material Updates – Buyback and Rentals

RENTAL RETURNS
Students who have rented books for the Spring Term will be required to return those books to Public Safety by May 15, 2020.  Students have a two week extension for rental returns.  Students who have left campus will be asked to ship their books back to the store, while those who remain on campus will have a drop location at Public Safety while the campus store is closed. We are planning in the event that we are unable to reopen, or for students who have returned to their permanent home. During this process, both the Campus Store and Public Safety will ensure adherence to the Governor’s order of social distancing, and respect safety guidelines for handling rental returns. These steps include, keeping a 6′ distance and disinfecting books. Students will receive communication regarding their rentals with instructions for proper returns. If students reach out to faculty to questions regarding their rental books, please have them contact Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store.  

BUYBACK
Students will now have the chance to sell their used textbooks through an online buyback program. Michigan Tech Campus Bookstore has partnered with two used textbook wholesalers who are offering students the opportunity to sell their books back without leaving their home. The Campus Store website will allow students to compare prices to both Nebraska Book Company and MBS Book Exchange. Both companies will allow students to print off a return label for free shipping. New Deadline for Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP) applications

The deadline for   Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP)  applications has been extended to April 20th.  

The program consists of a 20-week internship (Mid-September through Mid-March), a $1,600 stipend, and professional development activities centered in academic research and scholarship. The internship program is open to any undergraduate student on campus.

Applications are due by April 20 and include the following:

1.     Online Application Form

2.     Project Description

3.     Faculty Mentor Letter of Support

4.     Faculty Match Funding Acknowledgement

Campus-wide and Virtual Exhibit: The Art of Climate Change

The work of Chicago-based artist Alisa Singer, Environmental Graphiti is a series of digital paintings created to enhance public awareness of the science of climate change. Each of the artworks is derived from a chart, graph, map, word or number relating to key facts about climate change. Michigan Tech’s exhibit includes 23 pieces displayed at 10 locations across campus and virtually via the interactive campus map.

Stay tuned for more information regarding the new Drive date.  We are hoping to hold the drive sometime this summer when it is safe for people to gather in groups again.  If you are no longer able to hold on to your items or you will not be in the Keweenaw this summer, please contact sdh@mtu.edu and we will work with you to take your items off your hands.

Please continue saving these five items: granola/energy bar wrappers, batteries, plastic caps and rings, Styrofoam and cardboard egg cartons, and any plastic bag containing a recycling number.How much WASTE can we SAVE from the landfill as a COMMUNITY?

During the outbreak of COVID-19 students may be experiencing different types of needs. Michigan Tech has been working to develop a list of resources to address these needs. 

Food Resources:

• Husky FAN: Food pantry and emergency meals,
• Western UP Food Bank (Houghton),
• Meals for children: Houghton-Portage Township Schools are providing meals by order (email sturnquist@houghton.k12.mi.us or call 906-369-0449) to children 18 and unders.
• BHK Community Action Agency can provide monthly food options to those in need: 906-482-5528,

Utility Resources:

• Utilities: Some area utilities (electric, gas, water) can assist customers with payment plans or assistance with paying bills,
• UPPCO is suspending non-payment cut offs until April 5, customers need to contact them to inform them of any changes to their income during this time,
• Spectrum: Offering internet options for students who do not have access,

Medical:

• Medical: Hospitals can offer payment plans or other assistance for payment,

Storage:

• Uhaul: Offering free storage for students for 30 days

Job opportunities:

• Area businesses are hiring extra workers during this time for deliveries, additional cleaning and stocking,

Emergency Funds:

• Betty Chavis Emergency Fund
• International Student Emergency Fund
• Graduate School Emergency Fund (Loan Program)

11th Annual (first ever virtual) Feminists Reading Feminists on 3/31

Join us for the 11th annual Feminists Reading Feminists event hosted by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and the Humanities Department. 

Help us pay homage to the contributions of diverse feminist scholars and activists who have inspired us and continue to shape our evolving world.  The event will be held on March 31, 2020 at 4pm via ZOOM.  We in CDI know that community is important now, more than ever, so, join us!

We encourage you to sign up through our Google Form ahead of time (or submit a video/picture through the Google Form if you cannot attend) and at our virtual event via ZOOM, be prepared to share a chosen passage from your favorite text, your favorite video/audio clip, or simply participate by listening and engaging with those sharing.

Your selection should take 5 minutes or less to read or view. Prose, poetry and media are welcome. There will be time at the end for those who did not sign up ahead of time to participate in an open reading, ALL are welcome.

Tech Arts Festival – Photography Contest

MUB Board is hosting a virtual photography contest and it is open to all amateur photographers within the Tech Community! You must be a student, faculty or staff to enter. Entries must be original and not previously submitted. Prizes will be awarded to four photographers. Judges will vote to decide the top three photos and there will be one audience choice photo winner. Audience choice will be awarded to whichever photograph gets the most likes on Facebook before Wednesday, April 7th at 5:00pm.

All Contest Photographs must be submitted to mubboard@mtu.edu and posted to the MUB Board Facebook. Prizes will be given to the top 4 photos, rules can be found on the waiver.
