Get Involved, Give Back, Serve

As our Husky family finds itself spread across the world this Spring, we have come to realize now more than ever the importance of continual dedication to civic engagement and service.  Thus, we encourage each of you to get involved by finding opportunities to serve!  Even though we cannot always volunteer together, there are many ways to give back. We have compiled a list of opportunities that most anyone can pursue regardless of geographic location.  You can also sign up for our volunteer newsletter here. To all of you that volunteer your time and talents – YOU are our Husky Helpers! We appreciate all that you do.

K-Day Registration

K-Day Registration is officially open, so reserve your spot now!  Space and resources are limited, so do not delay!  

K-Day, or Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition that will be held on Friday, September 11 beginning at noon. Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music.  K-day typically sees 3500-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before  registering HERE.  

Keep in mind, the person you list as the primary contact for your organization’s registration will be the one receiving all communications.  They will need to keep an eye out for emails during the summer in case of any changes that are made to K-Day due to the fall semester start date. 

Get ready because with this year’s theme you will be crossing over into… The Involvement Zone!  Organizations can get creative with this science fiction and fantasy themed student organization fair!

MTU SDH Event: The Keweenaw’s First Waste Reduction Drive

The Keweenaw’s First Waste Reduction Drive has officially been rescheduled!

Drive Date: Saturday, June 27th from 9am – 5pm in Fisher Hall

Please continue collecting these items for the drive: foil-lined granola/energy bar wrappers, batteries, plastic caps and rings, Styrofoam and cardboard egg cartons, and any plastic bag containing a recycling number.  If you are no longer able to hold on to your items or you will not be in the Keweenaw on the day of the drive, please contact sdh@mtu.edu and we will work with you to take your items off your hands.

Student Leadership Awards

You are cordially invited to the 26th Student Leadership Awards Ceremony. At Michigan Tech we are blessed with students who are crazy smart, motivated, and adventurous. As faculty and staff, we partner with these students to inspire community, scholarship, possibilities, accountability, and tenacity. We realize how lucky we are to be able to work alongside them in their academic and career pursuits. Now is the time to recognize these students for their commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership.

The recipient of each award will be honored at the 26th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony posted Friday (April 24) on the Student Leadership Awards web page.

EVERY WEDNESDAY: Trivia Night!

Trivia Night! 

Join us April 29 at 8 PM EST on Zoom.  This week’s theme will be general trivia!  Think you know more than your friends?  Full of facts and not sure when you might need them?  Prove to everyone you know your stuff!  We will have weekly Wednesday trivia nights until the end of the semester. Our final Trivia Night will be April 29 and the theme will be Disney! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to get more information about upcoming trivia topics and other fun events!

Love in the Time of COVID-19: A Virtual Poetry Reading

As we face a new normal to our day-to-day lives, maintaining a creative, expressive, and connected community has taken on new meaning and importance.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Amy L. Howard (Center for Diversity and Inclusion) and M. Bartley Seigel (Department of Humanities) cordially invite you to submit work for participation in a virtual poetry reading engaging any facet of life and love in the time of Covid-19.

Anyone may submit a poem for this virtual reading. You may submit either an original poem or a favorite poem that has spoken to you during this difficult time. This reading is about community, feeling, healing, loving, and connecting, and we wish all individuals to feel empowered either as poets themselves or as avid readers of poetry.

Please note, by submitting a poem for possible inclusion, you are agreeing to be available to read that poem in person via the Zoom event.

The virtual poetry reading will be held Friday, April 24th at 4pm via Zoom.

This event is open to all. Selected poets MUST be available to read in person via Zoom. Please submit the following Google Form to participate!

Virtual Spring Fling!

The first ever “Virtual Spring Fling” is happening, and it’s time to have all hands on deck for this year’s Pirates Edition! This event is brought to you by MUB Board (Memorial Union Board), and is a chance for you to promote your organization. Check your email for all of the details!!!

Instead of doing a booth competition and presenting your org at tables on campus, we will be having a virtual poster event with added competition for the best posters. The posters which best match the theme of pirates will have a chance to win money for their organization! First place is $125 and Second place is $75! Additionally, if your poster receives the most likes from our Facebook post your organization will get to select the location of your booth at next year’s spring fling!

Intramural Rocket League Info

Michigan Tech Intramurals is happy to announce that we will be offering Rocket League Tournaments. The attached link is a sign-up sheet for the tournaments so we can get a rough estimate of how many people will be participating, their skill level and what platform they will be using. Feel free to inform other Michigan Tech students who you would think would be interested. 

This is a general sign-up sheet, it is to get a rough estimate of how many people are interested.

If everything goes well these next couple of days we should be starting this coming week.

The sign-up sheet is to get a general count of people who want to play in these tournaments. The tournaments will be divided by skill level, grouping some ranks together to make it more fair. There is now a category of what game mode you play. Your team will be based upon who is in your party at the start of the tournament. These tournaments will be private so there will be a name and password associated to be able to join. The name and password will be provided via IMLeagues in some way. If you have any questions you can reply to this announcement.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Michigan Tech is planning to host virtual events educate the campus community to prevent sexual violence. 

Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29

Michigan Tech Title IX invites you to wear denim with a purpose on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 for International Denim Day to support survivors and educate our community about the forms of sexual violence. Denim Day was founded after a 1999 Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Enraged by the verdict, within hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, organized the country’s first Denim Day event in 1999. You can find more information about Denim Day here. Please join us in wearing denim proudly on April 29.

Campus Store Course Material Updates – Buyback and Rentals

RENTAL RETURNS
Students who have rented books for the Spring Term will be required to return those books to Public Safety by May 15, 2020.  Students have a two week extension for rental returns.  Students who have left campus will be asked to ship their books back to the store, while those who remain on campus will have a drop location at Public Safety while the campus store is closed. We are planning in the event that we are unable to reopen, or for students who have returned to their permanent home. During this process, both the Campus Store and Public Safety will ensure adherence to the Governor’s order of social distancing, and respect safety guidelines for handling rental returns. These steps include, keeping a 6′ distance and disinfecting books. Students will receive communication regarding their rentals with instructions for proper returns. If students reach out to faculty to questions regarding their rental books, please have them contact Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store.  

BUYBACK
Students will now have the chance to sell their used textbooks through an online buyback program. Michigan Tech Campus Bookstore has partnered with two used textbook wholesalers who are offering students the opportunity to sell their books back without leaving their home. The Campus Store website will allow students to compare prices to both Nebraska Book Company and MBS Book Exchange. Both companies will allow students to print off a return label for free shipping. If you’d like to find out more, you can reach out to Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store or click here (https://www.bookstore.mtu.edu/michtech) During this time of social distancing, this is just one way the Campus Store is helping to smooth the transition for students by seeking new ways to offer services students depend on.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled Michigan Tech Students are eligible to participate in Rocket League Tournaments. Full-Time Faculty and Staff may participate

Lower ranked players can join higher ranked tournaments.

There is a 2 vs 2 open division that is not divided by rank, any ranked player can team up and face off.

New Deadline for Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP) applications

The deadline for   Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP)  applications has been extended to April 20th.  

The program consists of a 20-week internship (Mid-September through Mid-March), a $1,600 stipend, and professional development activities centered in academic research and scholarship. The internship program is open to any undergraduate student on campus.

Applications are due by April 20 and include the following:

1.     Online Application Form

2.     Project Description

3.     Faculty Mentor Letter of Support

4.     Faculty Match Funding Acknowledgement

Comedy Magician Trent James – LIVE on your computer!

Join us virtually on April 10 at 9:00 PM EST for a night of laughs, magic, and fun!  

Comedy magician Trent James is bringing a fresh new feel to the “classic magic show”. Trent’s high-energy performance combines mind boggling magic with gut busting humor that has earned rave reviews in seventeen states. Love in the Time of COVID-19: A Virtual Poetry Reading

As we face a new normal to our day-to-day lives, maintaining a creative, expressive, and connected community has taken on new meaning and importance.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Amy L. Howard (Center for Diversity and Inclusion) and M. Bartley Seigel (Department of Humanities) cordially invite you to submit work for participation in a virtual poetry reading engaging any facet of life and love in the time of Covid-19.

Anyone may submit a poem for this virtual reading. You may submit either an original poem or a favorite poem that has spoken to you during this difficult time. This reading is about community, feeling, healing, loving, and connecting, and we wish all individuals to feel empowered either as poets themselves or as avid readers of poetry.

Please note, by submitting a poem for possible inclusion, you are agreeing to be available to read that poem in person via the Zoom event.

The virtual poetry reading will be held Friday, April 24th at 4pm via Zoom.

This event is open to all. Selected poets MUST be available to read in person via Zoom. Please submit the following Google Form to participate!

Virtual Spring Fling!

The first ever “Virtual Spring Fling” is happening, and it’s time to have all hands on deck for this year’s Pirates Edition! This event is brought to you by MUB Board (Memorial Union Board), and is a chance for you to promote your organization. Check your email for all of the details!!!

Instead of doing a booth competition and presenting your org at tables on campus, we will be having a virtual poster event with added competition for the best posters. The posters which best match the theme of pirates will have a chance to win money for their organization! First place is $125 and Second place is $75! Additionally, if your poster receives the most likes from our Facebook post your organization will get to select the location of your booth at next year’s spring fling!

Michigan Tech Intramurals is happy to announce that we will be offering Rocket League Tournaments. The attached link is a sign-up sheet for the tournaments so we can get a rough estimate of how many people will be participating, their skill level and what platform they will be using. Feel free to inform other Michigan Tech students who you would think would be interested.

The sign-up sheet is to get a general count of people who want to play in these tournaments. The tournaments will be divided by skill level, grouping some ranks together to make it more fair. RAINN Checks for RAINN Day on April 14

The Rape Abuse Incest National Network (RAINN) is holding their annual RAINN Day on April 14, 2020. On April 14, Dial Help, Inc. and Michigan Tech Title IX are teaming up to host two Zoom meetings:

Denim Day on Wednesday, April 29

Michigan Tech Title IX invites you to wear denim with a purpose on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 for International Denim Day to support survivors and educate our community about the forms of sexual violence. Denim Day was founded after a 1999 Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. Enraged by the verdict, within hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. Peace Over Violence, a nonprofit organization in Los Angeles, organized the country’s first Denim Day event in 1999. You can find more information about Denim Day here. Please join us in wearing denim proudly on April 29.

Campus Store Course Material Updates – Buyback and Rentals

RENTAL RETURNS
Students who have rented books for the Spring Term will be required to return those books to Public Safety by May 15, 2020.  Students have a two week extension for rental returns.  Students who have left campus will be asked to ship their books back to the store, while those who remain on campus will have a drop location at Public Safety while the campus store is closed. We are planning in the event that we are unable to reopen, or for students who have returned to their permanent home. During this process, both the Campus Store and Public Safety will ensure adherence to the Governor’s order of social distancing, and respect safety guidelines for handling rental returns. These steps include, keeping a 6′ distance and disinfecting books. Students will receive communication regarding their rentals with instructions for proper returns. If students reach out to faculty to questions regarding their rental books, please have them contact Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store.  

BUYBACK
Students will now have the chance to sell their used textbooks through an online buyback program. Michigan Tech Campus Bookstore has partnered with two used textbook wholesalers who are offering students the opportunity to sell their books back without leaving their home. The Campus Store website will allow students to compare prices to both Nebraska Book Company and MBS Book Exchange. Both companies will allow students to print off a return label for free shipping. If you’d like to find out more, you can reach out to Jennifer Cowan at the Campus Store or click here (https://www.bookstore.mtu.edu/michtech) During this time of social distancing, this is just one way the Campus Store is helping to smooth the transition for students by seeking new ways to offer services students depend on.

The deadline for   Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP)  applications has been extended to April 20th.  

The program consists of a 20-week internship (Mid-September through Mid-March), a $1,600 stipend, and professional development activities centered in academic research and scholarship. The internship program is open to any undergraduate student on campus.

Applications are due by April 20 and include the following:

1.     Online Application Form

2.     Project Description

3.     Faculty Mentor Letter of Support

4.     Faculty Match Funding Acknowledgement

The work of Chicago-based artist Alisa Singer, Environmental Graphiti is a series of digital paintings created to enhance public awareness of the science of climate change. Each of the artworks is derived from a chart, graph, map, word or number relating to key facts about climate change. Michigan Tech’s exhibit includes 23 pieces displayed at 10 locations across campus and virtually via the interactive campus map.

Emergency Resources for Students

During the outbreak of COVID-19 students may be experiencing different types of needs. Michigan Tech has been working to develop a list of resources to address these needs. 

Food Resources:

  • Husky FAN: Food pantry and emergency meals,
  • Western UP Food Bank (Houghton),
  • Meals for children: Houghton-Portage Township Schools are providing meals by order (email sturnquist@houghton.k12.mi.us or call 906-369-0449) to children 18 and unders.
  • BHK Community Action Agency can provide monthly food options to those in need: 906-482-5528,

Utility Resources:

  • Utilities: Some area utilities (electric, gas, water) can assist customers with payment plans or assistance with paying bills,
  • UPPCO is suspending non-payment cut offs until April 5, customers need to contact them to inform them of any changes to their income during this time,
  • Spectrum: Offering internet options for students who do not have access,

Medical:

  • Medical: Hospitals can offer payment plans or other assistance for payment,

Storage:

  • Uhaul: Offering free storage for students for 30 days

Job opportunities:

  • Area businesses are hiring extra workers during this time for deliveries, additional cleaning and stocking,

  • Graduate School Emergency Fund (Loan Program)

11th Annual (first ever virtual) Feminists Reading Feminists on 3/31

Join us for the 11th annual Feminists Reading Feminists event hosted by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and the Humanities Department. 

Help us pay homage to the contributions of diverse feminist scholars and activists who have inspired us and continue to shape our evolving world.  The event will be held on March 31, 2020 at 4pm via ZOOM.  We in CDI know that community is important now, more than ever, so, join us!

We encourage you to sign up through our Google Form ahead of time (or submit a video/picture through the Google Form if you cannot attend) and at our virtual event via ZOOM, be prepared to share a chosen passage from your favorite text, your favorite video/audio clip, or simply participate by listening and engaging with those sharing.

Tech Arts Festival – Photography Contest

MUB Board is hosting a virtual photography contest and it is open to all amateur photographers within the Tech Community! You must be a student, faculty or staff to enter. Entries must be original and not previously submitted. Prizes will be awarded to four photographers. Judges will vote to decide the top three photos and there will be one audience choice photo winner. Audience choice will be awarded to whichever photograph gets the most likes on Facebook before Wednesday, April 7th at 5:00pm.

All Contest Photographs must be submitted to mubboard@mtu.edu and posted to the MUB Board Facebook. Prizes will be given to the top 4 photos, rules can be found on the waiver.

  • BHK Community Action Agency can provide monthly food options to those in need: 906-482-5528,

Utility Resources:

  • Utilities: Some area utilities (electric, gas, water) can assist customers with payment plans or assistance with paying bills,
  • UPPCO is suspending non-payment cut offs until April 5, customers need to contact them to inform them of any changes to their income during this time,
  • Spectrum: Offering internet options for students who do not have access,

Medical:

  • Medical: Hospitals can offer payment plans or other assistance for payment,

Storage:

  • Uhaul: Offering free storage for students for 30 days

Job opportunities:

  • Area businesses are hiring extra workers during this time for deliveries, additional cleaning and stocking,

Emergency Funds:

  • Betty Chavis Emergency Fund
  • International Student Emergency Fund
  • Graduate School Emergency Fund (Loan Program)

There may be additional resources depending on your area of residence. Please refer to your city’s webpage, local news, or social media.

Tech Arts Festival – Photography Contest

MUB Board is hosting a virtual photography contest and it is open to all amateur photographers within the Tech Community! You must be a student, faculty or staff to enter. Entries must be original and not previously submitted. Prizes will be awarded to four photographers. Judges will vote to decide the top three photos and there will be one audience choice photo winner. Audience choice will be awarded to whichever photograph gets the most likes on Facebook before Wednesday, April 7th at 5:00pm.

All Contest Photographs must be submitted to mubboard@mtu.edu and posted to the MUB Board Facebook. Prizes will be given to the top 4 photos, rules can be found on the waiver.

Comedy Magician Trent James – LIVE on your computer!

Join us (virtually) Friday, April 10 at 9:00 PM EST for a night of laughs and magic!  Comedy magician Trent James will perform a show of slight of hand magic tricks and illusions, and will even teach the viewers how to perform some magic with items available in their room or house all through Zoom!

Comedy magician Trent James is bringing a fresh new feel to the “classic magic show”. Trent’s high-energy performance combines mind boggling magic with gut busting humor that has earned rave reviews in seventeen states. Trent is now quickly becoming one of the top magicians in the country. Don’t take our word for it…he has received top awards from both The International Brotherhood of Magicians and The Society of American Magicians, as well as being the youngest recipient of The Milbourne Christopher Award (Past winners Included David Copperfield and Penn and Teller). Trent’s unique sleight of hand magic and hip vibe have made him a huge hit at colleges, comedy clubs, and corporate events.

Student Leadership Awards for SNB

Nominations are still open for the 26th Annual Student Leadership Awards. At Michigan Tech, we are blessed with motivated and adventurous students. We are seeking nominations for various awards to recognize student leaders and organizations for all of their accomplishments. Please do not hesitate to nominate yourself or others! 

While we understand a face-to-face ceremony will not occur, we are currently thinking through other alternatives to recognize the nominees and recipients of the awards. Be on the lookout for updates!

University Innovation Fellows Applications are Now Open!

We are looking for students interested in becoming agents of change to become University Innovation Fellows! They will work on improving the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem here at Michigan Tech. We are looking for creative, action-oriented students who are passionate and excited about innovation, entrepreneurship, or making positive change.  

The University Innovation Fellows is a 6-week training program administered by Stanford University’s d.school (about the commitment of a 1-2 credit class at Michigan Tech). Through the fellowship, undergraduate and graduate students from across the nation are charged with cultivating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship at their university. Fellows gain skills, tools and the networks crucial for their mission through online training and video-conferencing sessions. Fellows hone in on their leadership and communication abilities and broaden their understanding of experiential learning, design thinking, interdisciplinary education and, most importantly, student innovation and entrepreneurship. 

Upon completion of training, Fellows may have the opportunity to attend a 4-day retreat at Stanford University and Google. The fellowship is an opportunity to enact meaningful change while being part of a national movement. Current fellows at Michigan Tech have been working on many exciting initiatives and can’t wait to have your help in creating the future here on campus!

Student Leadership Awards for SNB

Student Leadership Awards is a time to celebrate and reward the individual and group efforts of students involved in organizations across campus. At Michigan Tech we are blessed enough with students that are crazy smart. Now it the time to be recognized for your commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership.

On behalf of the University, we are seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Dean of Students Award for Service, and various other student leadership awards. The recipient of each award will be honored at the 26th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 17.

The nomination process is simple. All awards and information about each can be found online. For each individual award, simply click on the award title, then complete and submit the nomination form.

Nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership and the Dean of Students Award for Service are due by  5 p.m. Friday, March 6.  Nominations for all other Student Leadership Awards are due by 12 p.m. noon, Friday, March 20. Questions concerning the awards can be directed to Student Leadership and Involvement.

2020 World Water Day Student Poster Competition

The 2020 World Water Day Student Poster Competition will take place on Monday, March 23rd as a part of Michigan Tech’s World Water Day celebration. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight your work, practice effective science communication, and maybe win a cash prize!

Posters can be submitted in two categories: Original Research or Coursework-based Projects.  Cash Awards will be offered in each category (1st-$300, 2nd-200, 3rd-$150), as well as one People’s Choice Award ($$$). The poster competition will take place between 11:30-2:30 in DOW 804, 873, 875 – you DO NOT need to be available for the whole time period! Meckler to Headline Two Major Jazz Festivals

Adam Meckler, Michigan Tech’s Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Professor of Music, a gifted trumpet player, composer, and music educator, has been tapped to headline not one but TWO big national jazz festivals in the next seven days: First, he will head to Coe College, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the largest annual jazz festival in Iowa, the Coe College Jazz Summit, Thursday, Feb. 27 – Saturday, Feb. 29. More than 90 high school bands participate, and he will be coaching the high school bands for the first few days of the festival. Meckler then will rehearse and perform as the featured guest artist with the Coe College Jazz Ensemble, doing a mix of his compositions and other big band music for their finale concert on Saturday, February 29, at 7:00 PM in Marquis Hall on the Coe College campus. 

Then on Monday, Meckler will travel to Sioux Falls South Dakota for the Augustana College’s 46th annual Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival, set for March 2-3, 2020, in Augustana’s Hamre Recital Hall. The festival features Meckler and host of PBS’ Sound Field, Arthur “L.A.” Buckner.

Michigan Tech Choirs Present Benefit Concert: Music for a Sacred Space

Join the Michigan Tech Choirs at 7:30 PM Sunday, March 1, for “Music For a Sacred Space,” an evening of sacred choral music presented in its natural habitat, the local treasure that is the magnificent space of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden.  “Music for a Sacred Space” is free and open to the public, and free-will offerings will be donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Student Leadership Awards for SNB

Student Leadership Awards is a time to celebrate and reward the individual and group efforts of students involved in organizations across campus. At Michigan Tech we are blessed enough with students that are crazy smart. Now it the time to be recognized for your commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership.

On behalf of the University, we are seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Dean of Students Award for Service, and various other student leadership awards. The recipient of each award will be honored at the 26th Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 17.

The nomination process is simple. All awards and information about each can be found online. For each individual award, simply click on the award title, then complete and submit the nomination form.

Nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership and the Dean of Students Award for Service are due by  5 p.m. Friday, March 6.  Nominations for all other Student Leadership Awards are due by 12 p.m. noon, Friday, March 20. Questions concerning the awards can be directed to Student Leadership and Involvement.

2020 World Water Day Student Poster Competition

The 2020 World Water Day Student Poster Competition will take place on Monday, March 23rd as a part of Michigan Tech’s World Water Day celebration. This is an excellent opportunity to highlight your work, practice effective science communication, and maybe win a cash prize!

Posters can be submitted in two categories: Original Research or Coursework-based Projects.  Cash Awards will be offered in each category (1st-$300, 2nd-200, 3rd-$150), as well as one People’s Choice Award ($$$). The poster competition will take place between 11:30-2:30 in DOW 804, 873, 875 – you DO NOT need to be available for the whole time period! You can register and share your availability using the link below.

Following your presentation to the judges, students are asked to participate in a public poster session from 2-4p in the MUB Ballroom. All posters (with a presenter present) are eligible for the People’s Choice Award.

StudentWatch Course Material Survery

The Campus Store is participating in the 2020 StudentWatch Course Material Survey sponsored by the National Association of College Stores (NACS) and is fielded by OnCampus Research.

At the completion of the survey, participating institutions receive two sets of data on student course material attitudes and purchasing habits: nationwide statistics and more specifically, a subset of data submitted by that institution’s students. The information collected is important to the University as we strive to provide the broadest course material options and most cost-conscious pricing through strategic partnerships, transparency, and industry awareness. In essence, the students’ responses are helping steer the ship.

The Campus Store is using multiple promotional methods to encourage students to participate. As well, OnCampus Research provides a $50 gift card to one student at each institution and $1,000 award to one lucky student selected from all survey participants.  Please check your email with the official survey link.

Built World Enterprise Information Session

Are you interested in joining an enterprise? Built World Enterprise is hosting on information session on Tuesday, February 25th at 5:00pm in Dillman 204. 

Built World Enterprise (BWE) currently participates in the Airport Cooperative Research Program University Design challenge that promotes student involvement in solving issues related to airports and the National Airspace System through innovative approaches. We are still a new enterprise and there is plenty of opportunity to shape the path of BWE. Any major is welcome to participate in the enterprise. 

William Gleason Shihan Aikido Seminar

Register now for the William Gleason Shihan Aikido Seminar February 28 through March 1 in the SDC Studio. This is a rare opportunity to train with a world class Aikido instructor in a small intimate setting. Gleason Shihan will focus on the internal applications of Aiki to one’s Aikido practice. We encourage all of our Aikido brothers and sisters to join us in training.

Session 1: Friday, February 28, 8:00-10:00 pm

Session 2: Saturday, February 29, 11:15am-1:45pm

Session 3: Saturday, February 29, 4:00-6:30pm

Session 4: Sunday, March 1, 11:00am-2:00pm

Open to all who are interested. Must be at least 16 years old or Level 4 (with permission of Sensei Campbell-Olszewski) to participate. Previous martial arts experience is helpful but not required.

Cost: Full seminar (all 4 sessions) $120, individual session $40. Registration for the full seminar closes February 28.

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change Comes to McArdle

Patricia Helsel and the Tech Theatre Company are bringing you the longest running cabaret musical in history, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change! The show, based on the book by Joe DiPietro, with music by Jimmy Roberts, takes on the comedic side of love and marriage, painting a series of vignettes about relationships through the tumultuous dating scene, road trips, marriage, kids, and all the other troubles couples face. The show will run for seven nights: February 20-22 and 26-29, all at 7:30 PM in the McArdle Theatre on the second floor of the Walker building.

Tickets available two hours before the performance at the McArdle box office. The show contains adult language and situations.

Poetry Slam Featuring Ebony Stewart Friday, Backstage at the Rozsa!

The Rozsa Center and the Black Students Association at Michigan Tech are proud to present Ebony Stewart, an international touring poet and performance artist. Her work speaks to the black experience, with emphasis on gender, sexuality, womanhood, and race, with the hopes to be relatable, remove shame, heal minds, encourage dialogue, and inspire folks in marginalized communities. As one of the most decorated poets in Texas, Ebony is one of the top touring poets in the country and a Woman of the World Poetry Slam Champion. The event will kick off with an open-mic poetry slam, then Stewart herself will take the stage on Friday, February 21 at 7:00 PM, in the “pop-up” club atmosphere of “Backstage at the Rozsa.”

CopperDog 2020 Volunteers

This year’s CopperDog will take place February 28 – March 1.

Volunteer positions are steadily filling up but we still have some work to do to get to 100% staffed. We are expecting additional teams this year which means we need additional dog handlers throughout the weekend! If you are not interested in dog handling, but still would like to be involved, there are other volunteer opportunities available for both groups and individuals.

This year’s volunteer training is scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd at 11 am in the Calumet High School cafeteria. We will have an indoor “classroom” portion of training first and then some outdoor hands-on training with teams of sled dogs.

What do snow removal, walking on ice, vacuuming, and managing disagreements have to do with the martial art of Aikido? Everything! Aikido principles allow us to improve our ease and effectiveness in daily living, physical and mental health, as well as self-defense. Who wouldn’t want extraordinary stability, generation of explosive power, and the inexplicable zeroing-out of an opponent’s force? Mastering Aikido secrets can be a game-changer for anyone involved in martial arts, yoga, meditation, sports, and achieving personal excellence.

Come join us for this introductory workshop to learn the foundational principles of Aikido. We will partner up to learn basic Aikido forms and the internal-power principles of aiki, the path to develop an extraordinary mind-body. This will be an active class, participants will be standing, bending, and twisting. (Rolling and falling are not required but for those interested and able it can add to the fun of training). Dress to move in work-out clothing or martial arts uniform.

Open to all who are interested. Must be at least 16 years old or Level 4 (with permission of Sensei Campbell-Olszewski) to participate. Previous martial arts experience is helpful but not required.
