Winter Warm Up

On-Campus Flu Shot Clinic

Michigan Tech, in collaboration with UP Health System – Portage, brings you an on-campus flu shot clinic from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 19) in the Rozsa Center Lobby.

A few things to remember for this year’s Flu Shot Clinics:

• No need to make an appointment—all flu shot clinics are walk-in friendly
• Be sure to have a valid copy of your insurance card (or a very clear picture of the front and back of the card) with you when you arrive
• Be sure to fill out the 2020 Influenza Vaccination Authorization Form before you arrive
• Be Smart, Do Your Part: Michigan Tech’s health and safety guidelines apply to everyone on campus. At all flu shot clinics, practice six feet of physical distancing and wear a face covering. If you don’t feel well, please stay home and plan to attend a future clinic.
• Flu shots are $40 for those who do not have insurance. Payable by cash, check or credit card.
• Join the UP Regional Flu Shot Challenge! Your results will be added to your institution’s data as we compete against other UP institutions. To log your flu shot (even if you received it off campus), please visit The Center For Rural Health page.

The University Senate Ad-Hoc Committee to Review Institutional Policy and Procedures for On-Campus Events would like to invite you to take the following survey. Part of our charge as a committee is to fully document the September 27th rally held on and around campus. If you attended, witnessed, or were impacted by the event and would like to share thoughts, pictures, videos, or audio recordings of this event, we’d like to hear from you.

How to Help a Friend – Suicide Prevention Training

Awkward Silence Presents: Seize the Awkward | Friendship & Mental Health

One of the best things about Michigan Tech is that we’re such a tight-knit community, and the thing that comes with a tight community is caring about those in our community. If you’re part of a student org., especially if you have a leadership position, you’re probably pretty concerned with ways to help your friends – especially with how stressful school + coronavirus can be. Heck, even if you aren’t in a leadership position, you probably want to learn better ways to help friends in need. But… conversations about mental health can feel awkward, intimidating and sometimes like you’re even crossing a line. When you seize the awkward ( <– check out that link, it’s super helpful) of these difficult conversations, it can be helpful to have a little training to rely on. 

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide prevention and awareness training that is online and takes about 25-30 minutes to complete. QPR is a lot like CPR, it can give people who aren’t professionals (all of you) a way to help someone in need. QPR teaches you first how to talk to someone who you might think is considering suicide, second, how to persuade them to get help, and last, how to refer them to help. We highly recommend this training for each of you, as well as any member of the MTU community, so please share this information.

Remember, it’s not your responsibility to provide therapy for all your friends or to fix all the problems in the world (although, if you have a cure for COVID, we’d take that…). Michigan Tech Title IX 2020 Sexual Misconduct Survey Results

The recent Michigan Tech sexual misconduct climate survey reflects students’ voices and thoughts on the sexual misconduct climate, including information related to incidents of sexual violence, policy, reporting, training, programming, support and resources. In January 2020, the survey invitation was distributed to all enrolled students. Participation was voluntary and responses were anonymous. Approximately 11% responded; 21% were graduate and 77% undergraduate students. 

The results tell us that overall, students agree that faculty and staff are concerned about their welfare and Michigan Tech has a good support system for students going through difficult times. What is the Lode, anyways? 

The Lode is Michigan Tech’s student newspaper, and we’ve been serving the MTU community since 1921, when we were founded as the Michigan College of Mines Lode. We currently serve the campus digitally on our website and in print, though COVID-19 safety precautions have momentarily postponed our in-print issues.

Will Sliney is an award-winning comic book artist, writer, and presenter!!! He has worked on titles such as Spider-Man, Star Wars, Defenders, Celtic Warrior (Ireland’s best selling comic book), and many more, including over 100 issues for Marvel comics!!!
He presented We Will Draw for RTE’s Homeschool hub, launched the viral art movement #wewilldraw, and presents Marvel Live’s How to Draw show including launching Marvel’s Twitch Channel.
Will also works for the Premier League, is an ambassador for the CUH Children’s unit, and is the Cork Person of the Month for July 2016.

Grant Writing Seminar

As a student or a researcher, a necessary component of your work is applying for a multitude of grants to obtain funding for future projects. Peter Larson, the Director of Research Development at Michigan Tech, will be conducting a seminar on Grant Writing on November 12 from 4:00-5:00 PM via Zoom. Peter specializes in creating effective grant and research proposals, particularly in the non-technical proposal sections that researchers often struggle with. Please send any topics or questions you wish to see discussed to gsg-prodev@mtu.edu so we can structure the seminar to better suit your needs. Those who participate in the seminar will get a chance to enter a raffle draw.

The Van Pelt and Opie Library is piloting a series of virtual “Library Drop-in Hours” for the remainder of the semester. Twice a week (Tuesdays, 4-5p and Wednesdays, 1-2p), we’ll host an open Zoom session on tools, topics, and skills that can streamline your research to save you time. Drop-in at any point during the hour with your questions or to walk through a short overview of the topic. Upcoming topics are:

A program in Panama is tentatively being planned for August 2021. Engineering majors may enroll for senior design credit (subject to department approval), and other majors can earn elective course credits.

Biofluids Laboratory Graduate Research Assistant Position Open

The Biofluids Laboratory at the Biomedical Engineering Department of Michigan Technological University has an opening for a graduate research assistant (PhD) starting January 2021.

The candidate will contribute to:

• The design and implementation of cardiovascular devices.
• Conducting experimental and computational studies on various congenital and adult cardiovascular models.
• Image reconstruction and processing by using and expanding existing tools and development of novel methodologies.

Talking circles are a type of restorative practice that allow participants to process their feelings. Restorative practices proactively build community and manage conflicts by focusing on repairing harm and restoring relationships. Come join in the conversation!

3 Minute Thesis Competition 2020

The Graduate Student Government is pleased to announce this year’s Three Minute Thesis competition. The competition is being held on Thursday, November 5, 2020. Registration is now open, and will be closed Friday, October 23, 2020. Also, a training workshop for the participants will be provided Wednesday, October 28th, 2020. This competition offers a great opportunity for graduate students across the university to present their research to a general audience. Participants are required to present their research within three minutes, hence the name ‘Three Minute Thesis’. This contest is open to all graduate students at any stage/path of their graduate studies. They are not required to have a finished thesis, or even a proposal to present – even coursework track students can participate. Participants are judged on their communication and presentation skills while delivering their content in just three minutes with one static PowerPoint slide. The 3MT competition was started by the University of Queensland, Australia in 2008. Success and the growing popularity of the competition spread the idea across more than 200 universities around the globe. The winner of the local Michigan Tech competition will earn the opportunity to present at the regional 3MT competition. It is divided into two phases: preliminary rounds and a final round. Preliminary round will be held virtually. Format for the final round is yet to be determined. The winner and runners-up will receive cash prizes of $300 and $150 respectively. Additionally, a People’s Choice award will be given to a speaker selected by the event’s audience, with a cash prize of $100. Due to COVID-19 and the national shortage of the Flu Vaccine, the on-campus flu shot clinics scheduled for today (Oct. 22) and Monday (Oct. 26) have been postponed. Please check the Flu Shot Clinic schedule for updates on upcoming clinics and locations.

Comedian Maggie Maye

Fall Break event!

Check out Maggie Maye on Friday, October 16th at 10 pm on Zoom. She was highlighted on Gotham Comedy Live and made her late-night debut on Conan. She’s performed at festivals such as Bridgetown Comedy Festival and the All Jane Comedy Festival. She’s opened for Paul Rodriguez, Godfrey, Paul Mooney, and Earth, Wind, and Fire. She’s been featured in the Huffington Post, Variety, The New York Times, and Sidesplitter (who named her one of 2015’s up-and-coming comics). She performs improv comedy with her troupe Damn, Gina! and in various sketch and improv shows around Austin. Her comedy is described in the same way she is: sassy, charming, and smart. Also, a 6-year-old once told her she was the funniest person ever. And kids rarely lie.

RSO re-registration & training are due Friday, October 2nd at 5pm. This year, the process has been integrated into Involvement Link and you can find helpful instructions for locating and navigating your training here. 

Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, and Advisors of all Registered Student Organizations are required to participate in training. Additionally, Presidents are required to submit a re-registration in order to maintain their RSO’s active status. Instructions for completing re-registration can be found here.

You have crossed over into the Involvement Zone… K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is our student organization fair and it’s an annual tradition at Michigan Tech. This is your opportunity to meet organizations and find out how you can get involved.

RSO Room Reservation Information

Due to the current Health & Safety level on campus and the ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, many of our buildings have adjusted their options for room reservations this semester.

Memorial Union Building –

• Reservations are for the fall semester only
  • reserved on a first-come, first-served basis 
  • reservation requests for the spring semester will be accepted beginning on November 1, 2020
• Ballroom is available after 6 p.m. Monday–Friday and on weekends during normal operating hours
  • offered up for student use as a quasi-classroom, Monday–Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. for the fall semester when classes are in session
  • Weekdays – walls up separating Ballrooms A1, A2, and B with classroom seating only
  • Weekends – walls can be removed for use of the entire Ballroom with classroom seating only
• Alumni Lounge will be offline for the fall semester to be utilized as a University testing site
• Room capacities will be determined using approved capacity guidance
  • Capacities will vary depending on what is allowable for your event/activity type and the meeting room setup you require
  • Existing reservations will be assessed every week for reservations within 30 days, confirming that reservations are still in line with COVID-19 protocols
  • Any additional service staff that are part of your meeting (i.e. Catering or IT) will count toward your overall capacity
• Rooms will be sanitized between scheduled events and in-room self-sanitizing stations will be available to users
• Submit a room request here at least 72 hours (3 days) before your event.  If you need to request a room less than 72 hours ahead of time, please contact the Memorial Union at 906-487-2543 or reservations-l@mtu.edu.  
• Room Setups – View standard setups for each room here. Custom setups are not available at this time.

Registrar – Academic Buildings and Classrooms –

• Classroom reservations for evenings and weekends are maintained in the Registrar’s Office.  You may submit your request using the online room reservation system.  
• Room reservation requests must be submitted at least one day in advance to ensure Public Safety and Police Services and Energy Management are notified.
• Registered Student Organizations must adhere to guidelines found here.
• For all group meetings, the group size of 10 is in effect. Even though your room may hold more, your group must adhere to the size of 10. An option if you have more is to reserve another room or meet outside.
• Reminder: Public Safety and Police Services is responsible for the locking of all University buildings. If you need after hours access to a building or room, or lock yourself out of your office, please call 487-2216.
• Information: If you need to reserve equipment or need assistance in a classroom, please contact Information Technology-User Services at it-help@mtu.edu or call 487-1111. Any questions, call the Registrar’s Office at 487-2319.
• Classrooms are cleaned daily, except weekends. Sanitize the areas where you sit and touch before and after use. Groups must maintain at least six feet of distance. Face coverings must be worn. Close windows, turn off lights, clean up, return room to order, and close the door when leaving. Be smart, do your part, and be responsible for your own safety.

EWI is an annual event hosted by the Michigan Tech Society of Women Engineers the day before the Fall Career Fair. EWI provides a relaxed environment where students and corporate representatives can interact before the career fair.

The event is open to all Michigan Tech University students, who will have the opportunity to network with company representatives while learning about numerous and diverse companies and the internship, co-op, and full-time employment opportunities they offer. These employers target Michigan Tech in their recruiting efforts and are eager to meet and interact with top talented students.

Please Take Care of Breakers

The North Canal Township Park is what we call “Breakers.” Breakers is unique in that the beach was partly formed due to the result of local mining and is made up largely of stamp sand. Breakers is very popular for students at Michigan Tech – the drive out is nice and it seems like there’s always some group having a bonfire. But we must also be good stewards of the park. Here are a few tips to help us all continue to enjoy Breakers…
