Parade of Nations

It’s Parade of Nations time again. Brightly decorated floats and marching groups bearing flags of many nations will hit the streets of Hancock and Houghton at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 22, for the annual international celebration.

After the parade, come to the Dee Stadium for a multicultural festival starting at noon and featuring international foods at 26 booths and a gala show. Performers include the Michigan Tech Dance Team and Hip Hop Club, the Copper Country Cloggers, the Kivajat Dancers, songs by the Hassle Family, and a Chinese dance by Summer Gu. The Medievalist Club will also perform, as will the International Student Association. There is no charge for admission.

Society of African American Men Presents: 5th Annual Men’s Week

On September 24-28 at 7:00 PM in the  DHH Ballroom the Society if African American Men will host its annual event, Men’s Week.  This years topics include Leadership, Networking, and Relationships.  There will also be a talent show with a cash prize.

Men’s Week is not just for men!  Women are strongly encouraged to attend as well.

2012 Evening with Industry

All students are invited to attend the 2012 Evening with Industry hosted by the Society of Women Engineers on Monday, October 1 from 5:30-8:30 PM in the MUB.  It is held the night before the career fair and provides an opportunity for students and company representatives to interact and have dinner in a relaxed setting.  There are currently over 120 company representatives registered and they can’t wait to meet students like you!  Companies also receive an electronic copy of your resume, so they have it before the career fair starts.

Tickets are available in the SWE office in MUB 106 from 10:00 AM -2:00 PM on September 17-21 and 24-26 for $15.  Some of the companies attending the event are generously sponsoring the event, so those who purchase their tickets early will be reimbursed at the event.

Volunteers Needed!

The Van Pelt and Opie Library will be participating in the Michigan Libraries for Life – a campaign to educate patrons about organ, tissue, and eye donation and offer the opportunity to join the Michigan organ donor registry.

We are looking for a student organization to staff a table in the library from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, October 2 and 3. There will be informational handouts, some swag and a computer where people can be helped to sign up for the Michigan donor registry.

Van Pelt and Opie Library Offers New Student Services

The Van Pelt and Opie Library is proud to announce a new service enabling students to book their own study rooms online

As you may know, the library reserves 22 group study rooms for undergraduate and graduate student use—twelve group study rooms (up to 6 occupants), and ten large group study rooms (up to 12 occupants). Students may now book these study rooms themselves through any web browser, smart phone, or web-ready mobile device.

Students may book one or more rooms per day for a total of four hours, and rooms may be reserved up to two weeks in advance. Rooms are equipped with tables and chairs, electrical outlets, wireless Internet access, and dry-erase boards. Laptops and dry-erase markers may be checked out at the Library and IT Service Center on the first floor. Rooms 238, 302 and 303 are equipped with large screen, wall-mounted monitors and room 238 is also configured for web-conferencing.

To book your group study room, simply visit the library’s homepage (http://www.mtu.edu/library/) through your computer or mobile device. Click on the big blue button which reads “Need to book a study room?” and follow the simple instructions.

This is the third running of the Great Northern Adventure Race, The GNAR, and we want you to be a part of it.  This introductory 3-5 hour race will consist of orienteering, Mt Biking, Running/Walking, and other challenge events working either 2 or 4 person teams.  This is a great race for first time adventure racer as well as a good warm up for the seasoned veterans.  The race will take place near the rugged and picturesque area around the Upper Peninsula city of Houghton, MI on Saturday, September 29, 2012.  Spaces are limited and the deadline is Wednesday, September 26.

Join Arnold Air Society in the annual POWMIA Bridge Run/Walk on September 22 at 10:00 AM.  The run honors POW/MIA’s and raises money for the local VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) in Houghton.

2012 Sorority and Fraternity Recruitment

Greek Life will be hosting events for those interested in learning more about sororities and fraternities here at Michigan Tech.

For men interested in joining a fraternity, the Interfraternity Council will be hosting house tours on Sunday, September 9.  The tours leave from lot 15 in front of Wadsworth Hall and transportation will be provided.  The tours will begin at 3:00 PM and will be followed by a picnic, catered by Jimmy John’s, at the East Houghton Waterfront Park.  Men are reminded that no commitment is required.  This is a time to get to know the fraternities and learn more about them.

For women interested in joining a sorority, there will be a social hosted by the Panhellenic Council on Wednesday, September 12 at Hillside Place.  Snacks will be provided and information will be shared about the sororities and the recruitment process.  This is meant to be an informal way to get to know more about the sororities and their members.  Again, no commitment is required to attend the social.  To actually register for Formal Recruitment, women should go to https://www.involvement.mtu.edu/form/start/13319 and complete the required form.  Registration is due by Saturday, September 15 by 11:55 PM.

She has toured her solo show across the globe from New Zealand to Norway, and charmed the world’s magic elite at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. Lindsay got her start performing her act on the streets of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Inspired by classic vaudeville and golden-era comedy, she has spent her life working tirelessly to perfect the art of making people happy. Also an accomplished actress, Lindsay has appeared in films such as The Darwin Awards and The Lost Coast, both of which were featured at major film festivals.

There is an exciting event coming up in the end of August. Mind Trekkers will be attending the Houghton County Fair at the fair grounds in Hancock. They are looking for 100 volunteers for this trip. This will be a great kick start to the school year and a chance for everyone to make some new friends! They will be meeting at the Administration Building at 8:00am on Saturday, August 25. From there they will travel to the fair grounds, set up, and enjoy a day full of mind trekking and science! The event will run from 10 AM to 5:00 PM. Lunch will be provided.
Schedule:
8:00 AM – Meet at Admin, drive to fair grounds
8:30 AM – Set up for event
10:00 AM – Event starts
5:00 PM – Event Ends, clean up immediately
5:30 PM – Drive back to Admin Building

Sunset Cruise on the Isle Royale Queen IV

Student Activities is hosting an evening for students on the Isle Royale Queen IV cruise ship out of Copper Harbor on Friday, July 20.  The cost is only $5.00 and includes transportation from the MUB to Copper Harbor and back.  What a deal!  The buses will leave the MUB bus stop promptly at 6:00 PM, arriving in Copper Harbor at approximately 7:00 PM. There will be a short time to browse the gift shop before boarding the ship at 7:45.  The cruise will last about 1 1/2 hours and the bus will be arriving back to Houghton between 10:30 and 11:00 PM.
Sign up opens at 2:00 PM, Thursday, June 28 on Walker Lawn during National Chocolate Pudding Day. After this event, sign up is available at the Outdoor Adventure Program, 207 East Street.  Seats are limited so come early!

Outdoor Adventure Program – Open Challenge Course

The Outdoor Adventure Program is opening their Challenge course to students and the public on Saturday, June 23 at 3 PM to 6 PM.  Bring your sense of adventure and check out the high ropes course and zip-line.  There is no charge for this event and there will be a short tutorial before you get started.  It is required that you fill out the liability waiver to gain access to the course.

Research Volunteers Needed

Are you blood type AB+, AB- or B-?
If so, a research lab on campus is in need of a small donation of blood via the trained personnel at the SDC Portage Health Clinic.  If you are interested, please contact Ms. Kaela Leonard at mderl@mtu.edu or 906-487-1813 to schedule an appointment.  If you have any questions regarding the research please contact Dr. Adrienne Minerick at minerick@mtu.edu.  You will be asked to provide proof of blood type, but other personal information will not be recorded.
You will need to give your consent for the donation and a monetary gift of $5.00 will be given to donors.

Outdoor Adventure Program Presents, Art in the Woods Part 2

If you love art AND nature this is for you!  The second in a series of four, the Outdoor Adventure Program is hosting a trip to the Montreal Falls on Sunday, June 17 from 9 AM-3 PM.  Explore your artistic talents by painting, drawing, writing, taking photographs or playing music in nature.  The cost is $10 and covers art supplies and transportation.  Remember to pack a lunch as we won’t be near any restaurants or stores.
