Rozsa 2011-2012 Season Single Tickets On Sale Today!

Michigan Technological University’s Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts single ticket sales for all performances begin today, September 1, 2011.

September performances include the Student Entertainment Board-sponsored rock band “ Motion City Soundtrack ” on Labor Day, Monday Sept. 5 th , the spectacular dance event “ MOMIX: Botanica ” on Friday Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24 th ; a lecture with the famed inventor Ray Kurzweil o n Wednesday, Sept. 28; rounding off September at the Rozsa is Comedian Maria Bamford , on Friday, Sept. 30, known as the Comedy Central “Lable Maker Lady.”

Other highlights this fall include Savion Glover: Bare Soundz ; Savion is known as the best tap dancer in the world! FILM BOARD:  ‘This week’S Film Board is showing Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D in Fisher 135.  Because this movie is being shown in 3D, please remember to bring a Tech ID in order to check out 3D glasses.  It will be shown on Friday, September 2nd and Saturday, September 3rd at 6:00 pm, 8:30 pm, and 11:00 pm.  Tickets are $3 each with a Tech ID and concessions range from 25 cents to 75 cents.  If you have any questions, please contact Film Board’s Publicity Chair, Carissa Lindeman, at clindema@mtu.edu.

STUDENT ORG RE-REGISTRATION:  A reminder to Registered Student Organizations that the re-registration process takes place next week on September 6, 7 and 8 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm in the Student Organizations Office, MUB 106.  Meet with staff on a walk-in basis; first come, first served.  Your organization will be asked to complete a re-registration card, complete an online executive board training, and have your organization’s inventory completed and uploaded to Involvement Link.  If you have any questions regarding re-registration, contact Maryann Wilcox by phone, 487-2402, or email, mawilcox@mtu.edu.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PROJECT:  Join us for The “Be Better Together for 9/11” Service Project on Saturday, September 10, 2011 beginning at 9am.  The project will be the final grounds preparation and clean up on the Habitat for Humanity house at 602 Agate Street (off of College Ave.), just a few blocks from campus. 9/11 CEREMONY:  The ROTC will hold a ceremony on 11 Sept 2011 at the ROTC building on Michigan Tech’s campus.  It will start around 0840 with a joint Army-Air Force color guard taking it’s place at the flag pole.  At 0846 (The time the first plane hit the twin towers), Reveille will sound, the flag will be raised and then the national anthem will follow.  After a few words from a Master of Ceremonies there will be a Wreath Laying, followed by the 21-rifle salute.

NEW IMPROV GROUP:  There’s a brand new improv group on campus called Tech-O-Prov!  Ever wanted to learn how to do improv?  Already have improv experience and want to have fun?  We’re having practices in McCardle Theater (second floor of Walker Center for the Arts) every Friday this semester from 5:45 to 6:45!  Ever wanted to see a live improv show like SNL?  Then keep an eye out for postings about upcoming shows and events. LITTLE BROTHERS – FRIENDS OF THE ELDERLY VOLUNTEERING:  Little Bros. – Friends of the Elderly would appreciate volunteers for their woodcutting program, which provides elderly people in need with wood to heat their homes throughout the winter.  People can volunteer as an individual or as a group to cut wood at one of our sites or an individual’s home, and/or deliver the wood to the elderly. Little Brothers will provide all of the equipment necessary. JOIN THE STUDENT COMMISSION!

Ever notice something about Michigan Tech that could be improved?  Have you had a great idea that would have a positive effect on other students?  If yes, you are invited and encouraged to join us at the Student Commission meetings.  We look to break down the barriers that impede student’s success, and to improve Michigan Tech’s campus environment.  You’ll get the chance to have your ideas heard by staff, faculty, university officials, and most importantly, other students.  We work together to act on your idea and make changes.  Past accomplishments of the Student Commission include: 

  • Supported the proposal for Wadsworth Dining Hall to open earlier on the weekends
  • Supported the idea of faculty giving a mid-term survey each semester
  • Supporting the proposal to upgrade the blue light system on campus
  • Supported the drinking foundation hydration stations on campus
  • Proposed the idea for the senior lunch and survey
  • Increased recycling on campus
  • Developed a value statement

Student News Briefs: August 26, 2011

Experience the whimsical, smart, funny, and above all beautiful world that artist Sarah Kargol has created with “21st Century Monsterpieces” in the Rozsa Gallery. Please join the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in our celebration of her “21st Century Monsterpieces.”  This exhibition runs now to November 4, 2011.  The Rozsa Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM.

F’ALL NIGHTER:  Come out to the SDC on Saturday August 27th at 8:00 pm to get involved at Michigan Tech!  F’all Nighter is a showcase for student organizations on campus.  F’all Nighter is an alcohol free event and gives new students a great place to be for their first weekend on campus.   Basketball, ice skating, and other activities are provided by Alpha Phi Omega (APO), and many organizations will use this as an opportunity to recruit new members.  Other events will be mini golfing, cookie decorating, dancing, dodgeball, yard games, and much, much more!  Any questions regarding F’all Nighter can be directed to Gwendolyn Fleming at gfflemin@mtu.edu.

BLOOD DRIVE:  As part of Welcome Week, the American Red Cross will be having a blood drive on Tuesday, August 30 and Wednesday, August 31 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Van Pelt Library Reading Room.  Appointments can be made by coming in person the day of and signing up for a time that fits your schedule.  The whole process takes about an hour.  It starts with registration, a health history and a ini-physical.  The actual donation takes no more than 10-12 minutes.  Afterward, you will be asked to spend a few minutes in the “canteen” where you can have a light refreshment before returning to your normal activities.

STUDENT ORG RE-REGISTRATION:  Student Organization re-registration will take place September 6-8 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm in MUB 106.  Please see the handout in your organization’s mailbox.  Re-registration will be on a walk-in basis:  first come, first served.  Organization representatives will need to complete an RSO re-registration card, have a completed inventory of all Student Activities Fee (SAF) funded equipment; complete an online executive board training, and will be required to resolve any past financial issues before re-registering

 

 

Welcome Week will kick-off on Monday, August 29 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Memorial Union Building Circle with give-a-ways of drawstring bags containing pencils, pens and notebooks, along with a bike clinic sponsored by the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP).   Welcome week will conclude on Sunday, September 4 with Women’s Soccer at 1:00 pm vs. Crookston, at Sherman Field, and the MUB Board Golf Scramble from 1:00-6:00 pm at the Portage Lake Golf Course.

LABOR DAY CONCERT:   There will be a Labor Day concert in the Rozsa Center on Monday, September 5, featuring “Motion City Soundtrack.”  The concert is sponsored by the Student Entertainment Board (SEB).  Tickets will be $20 for Michigan Tech students and $25 for the general public.  Please visit www.rozsa.mtu.edu for more information.

K-DAY:  K-Day is short for Keweenaw Day and is a longstanding tradition at Michigan Tech.  K-Day will be held on Friday, September 9 from 12:00-4:00 pm at McLain State Park.  There will be food, great music, student organization booths and fun activities. K-Day is an opportunity for students to see all 220 plus student organizations at Michigan Tech.  Student organizations set up displays and demonstrations for students to enjoy.  Transportation to McLain State Park will be provided on K-Day.  Buses will leave the Memorial Union Building every half hour beginning at noon.

PARADE OF NATIONS AND MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL:  Start planning for this year’s Parade of Nations and Multicultural Festival to be held on Saturday, September 17. Participation is encouraged in all the various events.

The Parade:  March from Hancock to the Dee Stadium in Houghton behind your nations flag. Wear your native dress, make a float to meet this year’s theme “Spice is Always Nice”, plan to provide music or pass out candy or anything else that will make it more fun for you and the spectators, within the Guidelines of course.

The Multicultural Festival:   Show your talent and sign up for an entertainment spot,  plan for a craft or ethnic food booth and find out why we call this the largest multicultural event in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

GREAT NORTHERN ADVENTURE RACE:  Michigan Tech’s Outdoor Adventure Program is announcing their second running of the G reat N orthern A dventure R ace on Saturday, September 24, 2011.  This introductory 3-5 hour race will consist of orienteering, Mt Biking, Running/Walking, and other mystery challenge events working with either 2 or 4 person teams. This is a great race for first time adventure racers as well as a good warm up for the seasoned veterans. The race will take place in the Tech Trails, Nara Trails, and local campus community.  The registration fee is $20 per racer. The race begins at 11:00 am and concludes at approximately 4:00 pm. Space is limited to 20 students and 40 community/staff members.  Sign up today before all of the spots are filled. BLOOD DONORS FOR RESEARCH:  Medical Micro-Device Engineering Lab (M.D. ERL) on campus is seeking blood donors for all blood types, especially the following rare blood types: A-, B+, B-, AB+ and AB-.  If you would be willing to donate a small vial of blood via the trained personnel at the SDC Portage Health Clinic, please contact Ms. Kaela Leonard at kaela.m.leonard@gmail.com to schedule an appointment.  For any questions regarding the research, contact Dr. Adrienne Minerick at minerick@mtu.edu.  You will be asked to provide proof of blood type, but other personal information will not be recorded and will be kept completely confidential.  You will need to give your consent for donation; the form can be viewed at www.mderl.org.  A small monetary gift of $5 will be given to donors.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOUGHTON COUNTY FAIR:  Michigan Tech MIND TREKKERS are seeking volunteers for the Houghton County Fair, where the team will be showcasing nearly 100 hands-on demonstrations.  The event is on Thursday August 25, 2011. PARADE OF NATIONS PARTICIPATION:  The 22nd Parade of Nations “Spice is Always Nice”  will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in downtown Hancock and Houghton.  Michigan Tech students are invited to represent their countries by marching in the parade, making and selling food from your home country, or by showcasing your talent during the entertainment portion of the program.  The parade committee is accepting applications for floats, booths and performances.  International Programs and Services will award activity grants (up to $100) to recognized Michigan Tech clubs and organizations to offset the cost of participating.  Funding will be provided on a first come fist served basis so submit your applications today!

NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR ART PROJECT:  The Storyline Project, part of the Pine Mountain Music Festival, is setting up the great collection of  stories submitted by thousands of people in Upper Peninsula communities in celebration of their ancestors survival of adversities.  These are going up right now at the Rosza Center and Walker Building!   If you can help with the display or in other way this week (July 5-9), come by the Rosza or call Mary Wright at 906.361.5548.

WEEKEND TRIP TO THE PORKIES:  Join the Outdoor Adventure Program on a weekend backpacking trip to the Porcupine Mountains!  Led by Brian and Tom, this trip will feature one of the great resources in our back yard – the Porkies!  The trip leaves the OAP house on Friday July 15th and returns around mid-Sunday July 17th. The park has some incredible vistas, and we’ll probably see quite a few of them including (but not limited to) waterfalls, Lake of the Clouds, and the sights of the wilderness coast of Lake Superior.  All skill levels are welcome, with trip leaders who will not only choose the best trails for the group, but take care of the transportation, food, cooking, group gear hauling, permits, and pre-trip info.  The total cost of the trip comes to $40, which can be paid when you sign up in the OAP Rental Center.  For more information, or if you have questions, please don’t hesitate to call 906-487-2290, or e-mail oap@mtu.edu, or stop by the OAP house.  Rental Center Hours can be found at www.oap.mtu.edu.

GOLF OUTING:  Michigan Tech MBA Association and American Marketing Association of the School of Business and Economics would like to cordially invite you to the 2nd Annual Golf Outing.  This golf outing is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 6, 2011 (Reunion Week) from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm at the University-owned Portage Lake Golf Course.  Golfers pay a green fee of $45.00, with Michigan Tech students paying a special fee of $25.00 in order to encourage graduate and undergraduate students participation in the tournament for a chance to win a prize.

The tournament will be a 4-person scramble , with prizes rewarding the first three teams (cash prizes), and the winners of three competitions (longest drive, longest putt, closest to the pin).  There will be a special prize for the worst performer as well!  Raffle tickets will be available for prizes donated by local businesses.  The golf outing is being put together for graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff, and alumni from ALL departments on campus, as well as for local community members.

Golfers will also receive a swag bag and are highly encouraged to confirm their participation by registering early.  Registration forms, once completed, can be sent to the School of Business and Economics with payment for the team or golfer (cash or check).  Golfers without a team should still sign up; our plan is to form teams for individual golfers based on their preferences if possible.

WEEKEND CANOE TRIP:  Join the Outdoor Adventure Program for a weekend canoe trip on the Peshtigo.  Departure is at 4pm on Friday, June 24th and returning Sunday evening, June 26th.  The trip entails a winding 15-mile paddle through the heavily forested Nicolet National Forest, passing hemlock stands, hardwood floodplains, marshes, and small rapids.  You will see lots of wildlife, get great pictures, and have a blast! ART EXHIBIT AT ROZSA:  Chris Rumery, artist and costume designer, will have her exhibition “Beyond Textiles” at the Michigan Technological University’s Rozsa Center Art Gallery through June 26, 2011.  “Beyond Textiles” is free and open to the public.  An accomplished costume designer for Broadway, television, and regional theatre, Chris finds and creates beauty by transforming simple, pedestrian, or even macabre materials into pieces with form and function. In particular, Beyond Textiles is a sampling of dresses made from plastic, metal, paper, and more. This show is in support and celebration of the arrival of the Midwestern Weavers Conference on June 23-25, hosted this year at Finlandia University by the Buellwood Weaver & Fiber Guild of Hancock.

RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT:  The Relay for Life event is beginning this evening at 7:00 pm in the SDC Multipurpose Room and continues until 7:00 a.m. Saturday.  This year’s them is the 80’s!!  Dress 80’s style if you wish!  The event is free and you can come and go as you please.  Food will be provided at 8:00 p.m., 12:00 a.m., and 6:00 a.m.  There will be a cancer survivor speaker at 7:30 p.m.  The Luminaria ceremony is at 11:00 p.m., and the fight back ceremony at 6:30 a.m.  Brochures will be handed out at the door with a full list of events and activities for the night.  Lots of prizes will be given away!  Join us for COD, Halo and other video games (XBOX, WII, etc.), board and card games, rock climbing until 11:00 p.m., free-throw competition, jeopardy, family feud and a scavenger hunt just to name a few of the games and activities that will be happening.  For any questions, contact Stephen Schweitzer at skschwei@mtu.edu.  We hope to see you there!

DISASTER RELIEF FUNDRAISER:  The Japanese Conversation Club at Michigan Tech is planning a fundraising 5k run and 3k walk event for Japan on Saturday, April 16th.  Registration will be today at Spring Fling until 5:00 p.m., and 8:30 -9:45 a.m. tomorrow at the Rozsa Center.  Race time is 10:00 a.m. starting at the Rozsa Center parking lot.   For more information and the registration form, go to http://www.superioritystudios.com/temp/index.html.  All proceeds to to the American Red Cross Japan relief effort.

MESSAGE FROM LES COOK, VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS:  As you many of you know, Gloria Melton will be retiring as the Dean of Students in August .   She has served in this role since 2004 and her compassion and insight will be missed.   I am happy to announce that Bonnie Gorman, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, will be rejoining Student Affairs as the Dean of Students when Gloria retires in August .   Many of you know Bonnie has extensive experience in Student Affairs at other institutions as well as previously serving as Director of First Year Programs and the Associate Vice President for Student Life.   She is a great asset to the Michigan Tech community and I am excited to have her working more closely with students again.  If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at 487-2465 or lpcook@mtu.edu.

BIKE MAINTENANCE CLINIC:  The Outdoor Adventure Program will sponsor a Bike Maintenance Clinic on Wednesday, April 13 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Outdoor Adventure Program, 207 East Street across the highway from the main campus.  Representatives from local Outdoor Gear Outfitters (Downwind Sports, Cross Country Sports and The Bike Shop) will be present to conduct tune ups on bikes for $10.00.  Food and Drinks will be provided.  For additional information, contact OAP at 487-2290, or email oap@mtu.edu.

MOTORCYCLE STUNT SHOW:  On Friday April 15, during Spring Fling, the Full Throttle Motorcycle Club of Michigan Tech is hosting a motorcycle stunt show!  Two great groups will be performing on our campus: Sick Air FMX, featuring freestyle motocross tricks, and the Smage Brothers, featuring trials riding.  Shows will begin at noon, 2:00, and 4:00, and are free for everyone.  PLEASE NOTE: The shows will take place in Lot 27 (the $2 lot), so this lot will be unavailable for parking all day on Friday, April 15.  For more questions about the stunt show, contact Kaitlyn Bunker at kjreed@mtu.edu.
