Dr. Emily Geiger has been appointed an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Finlandia University in Hancock, MI. She will be teaching general chemistry and biochemistry classes.
Emily received a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Michigan Tech in 2015. While at Michigan Tech, her advisor was Rupali Datta.

Dr. Aparupa Sengupta has recently accepted a new job as a Biosafety Officer (microbiology/molecular genetics subject expert) at Rutgers University, NJ. Her office will be at the Rutgers School of Health Related Professions, Piscataway Campus, but she will also work at Rutgers’ New Brunswick and Newark Campuses.
She officially started in January 2016. Since her graduation, Aparupa has been working as a Lab Safety Scientist and Responsible Conduct of Research Coordinator/Instructor for the Michigan Tech Office of Compliance, Integrity and Safety.
Aparupa received a PhD in Biological Sciences from Michigan Tech in 2014. While at Michigan Tech, her advisor was Rupali Datta and her co-advisor was Susan Bagley.

Xiaoqing Tang (Bio Sci), was one of the authors of the paper, “Essential RNA-Based Technologies and Their Applications in Plant Functional Genomics,” in the Journal Trends in Biotechnology by the Cell publishers. [From Tech Today]
Charles Kerfoot (Bio Sci) with Susan C. Savage was published in “Limnology and Oceanography“.
The article covers experiments done on anti-predation defenses in a group of cladoceran taxa over 20 years, both in the New World and Old (Max Planck Center for Limniology, Ploen, Germany). The article emphasizes the importance of evolution in aquatic food webs, and begins to explain why exotic predators may have disproportionate effects on naive prey species. [From Tech Today]
Matthew Hymes, Scientist and Entrepreneur will be giving a Biotech Career talk Thursday January 28th at 12 pm in Dow 642.
The talk, sponsored by the Graduate Student Government, is open to all majors and degree levels.
Matthew would describe himself as an entrepreneur at heart with a passion for constant learning who found his calling in a molecular biology class at Michigan Tech. He received two degrees from Michigan Tech including a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology in 2000 and a Master’s of Science in Molecular Biology in 2002. He then worked as a researcher at the University of Michigan before earning an MBA in Marketing in 2007 from Baker College. After completing his MBA he took a position with a multibillion-dollar company to understand what is necessary to be a successful global organization. He parlayed this experience into a leadership role with a smaller organization with plans to expand to new markets. After building the foundation for this business, he found an opportunity back in Michigan with a biotech start-up that married his passions of molecular biology and marketing. He is currently helping this organization grow into a successful company as Marketing Director by utilizing his scientific background to create a differentiated brand. A PhD position is available with Dr. Amy Marcarelli at Michigan Technological University to join a 5-year, NSF-funded study of the balance between nitrogen fixation and denitrification in streams and rivers across the United States.
Candidates with an M.S. in aquatic ecology or related discipline are preferred.
