Change Your Major/Minor/Concentration

Degree-seeking undergraduate students may use the curriculum change portlet to request a change to their degree, major, minor and/or concentration. Non-degree-seeking students should contact Admissions to become degree-seeking.

Major add or change requests must be made by 5 p.m. on Wednesday of Week 2 to be effective that semester. Requests made after Wednesday of Week 2 will be effective the following semester.

Minor or concentration add or change requests will become effective the current semester, regardless of when submitted.

Major or minor drops become effective immediately in the current semester.

All add or change requests require advisor approval. Please contact the advisor of the major/minor/concentration you are adding PRIOR TO using this request system.

Dropping a double major, second degree, minor or concentration does not require advisor approval.

Curriculum changes may result in an adjustment to your student bill. Please contact the Student Financial Services Center with billing questions.

To update your major, minor, or concentration, please review the Curriculum Change Portlet Tutorial and login to MyMichiganTech

Procedure for Repeating a Course

If a student does not pass a course, meet a grade requirement, or desires to retake a course to earn a higher grade, they are welcome to. Students may add the course during the allowable BanWeb registration window. Students who wish to repeat a course in which they have already earned a C or higher must contact their academic advisor to request a repeat waiver.

A students cumulative GPA will reflect the most recent completion of the course, not the best grade.

THIRD ATTEMPT

By taking the course a third time, a student must fill out the Petition for Third and Final Attempt at a Course, obtain the required signatures, and return the form to the Dean of Students Office. In this form, students must agree to change curriculum or withdraw from the University if they do not pass the course. Students are not permitted to take the class at another institution and transfer the credit back to Michigan Tech if they do not pass the course at Michigan Tech on their third attempt. The third grade earned will be the grade recorded on the students transcripts, even if a higher grade was previously earned.

Students must have the permission of the Dean of Students Office and their academic advisor for the third attempt at any one course. Courses exempt from the repeat rule are those that may be repeated for credit as indicated in the course description.

In situations where an original course is no longer offered and no active direct equivalent exists, students may seek the permission of their academic advisor and the department chair or head of the academic unit to substitute a different course (a “similar repeat”) which covers comparable material at a similar level.

How to Register for Senior Design

Senior Design is more than just a class—it’s your bridge to the real world. This program connects students with industry partners through hands-on, open-ended design projects that mimic real engineering challenges. Working in small teams under the guidance of a faculty mentor (and often an industry rep), you’ll have access to cutting-edge tools, fabrication facilities, labs, and collaborative workspaces. Think of it as your first job, not your last class—the experience can be a game-changer for your career.

Course Sequence

To complete Senior Design, you’ll need to take the following courses in order:

  • BE 4900 – Biomedical Design Fundamentals (Prerequisite)
You must complete this before enrolling in any Senior Design courses.
  • BE 4901 – Senior Design I (Fall)
  • BE 4910 – Senior Design II (Spring)
These two courses should be taken in back-to-back semesters.

Registration Instructions

  • Register for BE 4901 through BanWeb during the regular registration period.
  • Make sure to select both an R section (lecture) and an L section (lab) when enrolling.

How to Register for an Enterprise

If you are interested in using Enterprise to complete their capstone requirement, please continue to read. If you are interested in alternative capstone options, see SENIOR DESIGN and EUPOPEAN PROJECT SEMESTER.

Joining an Enterprise at Michigan Tech is a fantastic way to gain real-world, team-based experience while working on impactful, hands-on projects. Whether you’re developing health innovations, exploring wireless technology, or tackling global sustainability challenges, Enterprise provides the space to grow, lead, and create.

What is Enterprise?

Enterprise consists of 27 unique student-run teams that function as consulting companies. Each team works on real projects with real clients—often for competition, industry, or community-based needs. Students work in large groups (often 50+), broken into smaller project teams, all under the guidance of faculty mentors.

If you’re a BME student, there are a few additional things to keep in mind:

  • The BME Department requires four semesters of Enterprise to fulfill your senior capstone requirement.
  • Enterprise modules must be completed during Fall and Spring semesters –Summer semesters will not count toward the capstone.

Important Note: Students will not be allowed to take ENT 4950 or ENT 4960 during the summer. These two courses must be taken in consecutive semesters (e.g., Fall-Spring of the same academic year, or in rare cases, Spring-Fall).
To use Enterprise as a capstone substitute, all four courses (ENT 3950, 3960, 4950, 4960) must be taken within the same Enterprise, ideally on the same project.

How to Register – Step by Step

BME students are welcome to join any Enterprise, but they must confirm there is sufficient Biomedical Engineering work involved. The most common Enterprises for BME students are H-STEM (L36), Consumer Product Manufacturing (L08), Innovative Global Solutions (L16) and Wireless Communications (L03).

Please note, these processes are for all modules EXCEPT ENT 4950.
ENT 4950 has a unique registration process.

  • Complete the Enterprises Interest Form, if the Enterprise has one.
  • Download and fill out the University Approval/Waiver Form (Form #3)
    • Name & M#
    • “Special Approval” checkbox
    • Course number (ENT 3950, 3960, 4960)
    • Semester & CRN
  • Email the completed form to your ENT Advisor.Request permission to join their Enterprise via their signature on the waiver form.
  • Once signed, send the form to the Registrar’s Office at schedule@mtu.edu for processing.

ENTERPRISE REGISTRATION TIPS & TRICKS

  • Double-check your CRNs and prerequisites.
  • Start early—advisors and faculty approval may take a few days.
  • Questions? Contact your ENT advisor or your Academic Advisor.
