Business Bash: Minor Programs and Pizza

The COB will share information about minors. Our minors lead to exciting pathways for students to broaden their academic horizons, complement their majors, and cultivate skills essential for success in today’s dynamic professional landscape.

Minors may complement a wide range of majors and provide students with valuable interdisciplinary skills and knowledge. Below is a description of each minor offered; individual degree audit requirements are linked.

Business: In today’s fast-paced and competitive global economy, having a solid foundation in business principles is essential for success. Our Business Minor offers students a comprehensive overview of key concepts and skills necessary to thrive in diverse organizational settings. This minor is not open to students majoring in Accounting (BACC and BAC1), Engineering Management (BEM), Finance (BFIN), Management (BMGT, BMG1, BMG2), Management Information Systems (BMIS), and Marketing (BMKT).
Business IT Solutions: In an era where technology drives business innovation, this minor empowers students with the power to leverage IT solutions effectively within corporate landscapes. From data management to digital transformation strategies, students experience business and technology, equipping themselves for dynamic roles in modern enterprises. This minor is not open to students in Management Information Systems (BMIS)
Construction Management: This minor provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies involved in construction projects. Through courses encompassing project planning, risk management, and sustainable construction practices, students gain the knowledge sought after in the construction industry.
Economics: Explore the intricate mechanisms of economies and decision-making processes with our Economics minor. From macroeconomic principles to microeconomic analysis, students develop an understanding of economic phenomena, empowering them to navigate the complexities of global markets and policymaking realms. This minor is not open to students in Economics (BEC).
Entrepreneurship, Technology, and Innovation: For the aspiring innovators and disruptors, this minor offers a place to cultivate entrepreneurial mindsets and skills. From ideation to creation, students use their abilities to identify opportunities, navigate challenges, and drive impactful change in the entrepreneurial landscape.
FinTech: Dive into the intersection of finance and technology with our Fintech minor. From different trading practices, students will explore cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of financial services. Equipped with fintech expertise, they are poised to thrive in the rapidly evolving landscape of finance and banking.
Global Business: In an increasingly interconnected world, proficiency in global business practices is paramount. Our Global Business minor offers students a view of international markets, cross-cultural management strategies, and global supply chain dynamics. With a global mindset and cross-cultural competencies, students will excel in the interconnected global marketplace.

APMP Accepting Applications for 2024-25

Our Applied Portfolio Management Program (APMP) is now accepting applications for the 2024-25 Academic Year–DUE Mon, MARCH 11.

Program participation, if accepted, begins in Summer 2024 with FIN4801 enrollment and continues through Spring 2025.

Go to the APMP website to download the application if you want to manage over $2 million in the stock market next year.

This opportunity is open to ALL students regardless of major.

COB Golf Etiquette Outing (Sun, Sept 24)

We are excited to announce an upcoming event that will provide an excellent opportunity for both beginner golfers and those interested in learning about golf etiquette. Don’t worry if you’re new to golf; this outing is designed to be inclusive and educational for all skill levels.

Event Details: Date: Sunday, September 24th
Golfers will be placed on tee times from 3-5pm
Location: Portage Lake Golf Course

During this outing, you will have the chance to:

Learn Golf Etiquette: Our experienced “mentors” will provide insights into golf etiquette, rules, and the dos and don’ts on the golf course, making it an ideal event for beginners. Network and Socialize: Golf is not just a sport; it’s a valuable tool for building relationships, both personally and professionally. You’ll have the chance to connect with fellow students who share your interest in golf and business.

Practice Your Swing: For those who are new to golf or looking to improve their game, there will be opportunities to practice your swing and get out on the course!

Finding an Internship or Full time employment

As we approach the next recruitment season for internships, co-ops and full time employment here are some ways to help you create a successful search.

Update your profile in Handshake-this allows employers to find you and you to find employers. Jobs are posted year-round.
Attend Career Fair (Spring 2022 Virtual on Wed, Feb 16, 10 am-7 pm; register and schedule for employer meetings prior to event)
Attend CareerFEST (Spring 2022 In-Person from 11 am-2 pm Jan 31, Feb 1, Feb 7; register and schedule to meet with potential employers prior to the event)
Get involved with a College of Business club/organization. Many attend conferences with job fairs, go on industry trips and more. This is an excellent way to network on multiple levels.
Talk with your faculty; employers sometimes seek students to hire by contacting faculty
Watch for emails from business@mtu.edu or your academic advisor for employment opportunities
Apply and search for positions in STEM fields in Michigan with STEM Forward
Meet with Career Services staff or a Career Coach for one on one advisement
