Securing a conditional job offer for an internship, co-op, or full-time position is an exciting milestone! However, before you can officially cross the finish line and start your first day, many employers will require you to complete a pre-employment drug screening as part of their hiring policy.
To help you seamlessly navigate this step of the onboarding process, the team at Michigan Tech Career Services has broken down what to expect, industry standards, and how to handle testing logistics from our unique location in the Keweenaw.
Knowing the Landscape: Industry Standards & Michigan Policy
In the state of Michigan, employers maintain wide discretion when it comes to requiring drug tests as a conditional requirement for hire. While policies vary by company, certain career paths will almost always mandate a screen. If you are entering fields like healthcare, law enforcement, or any position requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), expect routine pre-employment screenings as well as potential ongoing or random testing throughout your employment.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Once your employer initiates the screening process, you will need to schedule an appointment at an authorized facility. When you go to take your test, keep these standard procedures in mind:
- Bring Proper ID: You will be required to present a valid, government-issued photo identification (such as a driver’s license or passport) at the facility before testing.
- Review Prep Instructions: When your appointment is scheduled, pay close attention to any preparation guidelines provided by the clinic (such as hydration parameters or arrival windows).
- Billing Setup: In most standard cases, the employer will send the necessary paperwork directly to the facility ahead of time to handle the billing, meaning there should be no out-of-pocket cost to you.
Handling Testing Logistics in the Copper Country
Living in the Upper Peninsula means logistics can sometimes require a little extra coordination. Most standard pre-employment drug screenings can be easily completed right here at one of our local hospitals.
However, because certain specialized roles require highly specific certifications, the necessary testing protocols may not always be actively available in the immediate local area. If your employer assigns you a testing center that is hundreds of miles away, don’t panic!
Pro-Tip: Open a line of communication with the hiring organization or their testing coordinator right away. Politely explain our unique geographic location here in Houghton. In many cases, the testing vendor can easily coordinate directly with our local hospitals to transfer the paperwork and work through the testing details closer to campus. Ultimately, keep in mind that certain highly regulated tests can only be administered at strictly authorized locations, so planning ahead is key.
