Ph.D. Student Abel Reyes Presents Paper at Premier Machine Learning Conference

Abel Reyes

Ph.D. student Abel Reyes, advised by Assistant Professor Sidike Paheding, Applied Computing, presented a paper for the LatinX in AI (LXAI) workshop at the 40th annual International Conference in Machine Learning (ICML) 2023, the premier scientific meeting on machine learning. To attend, Reyes received a travel grant of $1,992 from the LXAI.

The conference took place July 23-29, 2023, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Reyes’s paper is titled, “The Forward-Forward Algorithm as a Feature Extractor for Skin Lesion Classification: A Preliminary Study.”

In the paper, Reyes and his co-authors demonstrate the strength of the Forward-Forward Algorithm (FFA) to train a neural network for skin cancer classification, without using the traditional Backpropagation method. The researchers believe this effort represents a pioneering effort in utilizing FFA within the medical image segmentation domain.
