All students are required to meet the World Cultures requirement. The requirement may be met in one of two ways:
WORLD CULTURES: Take UN1002 (4 credits). This is typically taken spring semester of the freshman year. If it is not transferred before a student gets to Michigan Tech, it cannot be transferred.
MODERN LANGUAGE: Take two semesters of a single modern language (French, German, Chinese, or Spanish) along with UN1003 World Cultures Activities. UN1003 and a modern language class are typically taken spring semester of the freshman year. One semester of the modern language (3 credits) plus UN1003 (1 credit) count for World Cultures, the second semester of the modern language (3 credits) counts for HASS distribution requirements.
If you took French, German, or Spanish in high school and are going to take the same modern language at Michigan Tech, you should take the on-line placement test. To do this fill out the form found at the following website (www.hu.mtu.edu/hu_dept/pdfs/mltestreg2011.pdf), then go to the Student Service Center in the Administration Building and pay the $5.00 fee. Once a week, the Humanities Department, will e-mail students a code so they can take the test on-line. If you want to get the code sooner, take your receipt to 319 Walker Arts Building. After completing the test, you will receive your language placement on-line.
