Nominations open for KCP Future Faculty Fellowships

The purpose of the King-Chávez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship Program is to increase the pool of traditionally underrepresented candidates pursuing careers in postsecondary education. Nominations may be at the master’s or doctoral level.  Please see our web site for more details on the program, eligibility requirements, and the application procedure.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, however, for the best consideration for funding beginning in spring 2015, please submit a nomination no later than 4pm, September 30, 2014.

The Graduate School will work with qualified applicants and their programs to develop a funding plan that includes funds from the KCP program, department or school, and Graduate School.

EndNote workshops announcement

The J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library is offering introductory EndNote workshops. EndNote is a citation management software that helps you easily create and manage bibliographic information and incorporate references into your writing.

Upcoming sessions will be held:

EndNote Basic I – Tuesday, September 16 , 5:00 p.m.

This workshop will introduce users to creating and managing references using the citation management software EndNote. No prior knowledge of EndNote is necessary. In this workshop participants will learn how to construct an Endnote Library in order to effectively organize references and create custom and smart groups to efficiently manage references.

EndNote Basic II – Thursday, September 25, 6:15 p.m.

This workshop will introduce users to incorporating EndNote Library citations into a written document (MS Word). Attending EndNote Basic I or prior knowledge of building and managing an EndNote Library is recommended. In this workshop participants will learn how to successfully incorporate Endnote Library references into their writing process (MS Word), and locate, identify, and import specialized output styles.

Our instruction rooms have EN X7 on Windows workstations. Attendees may bring their own laptops with EN X7 downloaded prior to the session. Visit the library’s Citation Support page to download.

GSG’s Lunch n Learn on Information Technology & Library Services

GSG’s first Lunch and Learn of the Fall semester will be held on Monday, September 8th.   This lunch-n-learn session will focus on various services provided by Information technology and Van Pelt and Opie Library on campus. The event is followed by a brief questionnaire session.

September First Friday Social at the Administration Building

First Friday Socials are back for 2014-15.  Faculty, staff, graduate students and retirees are invited to attend this year’s opener from 4 to 6 p.m., Sept. 5, in the parking lot outside the Administration Building and on the fourth floor. Complimentary soda, beer and wine will be served along with some great appetizers, and raffles will be held throughout the event.

The Graduate School and Graduate Student Government (GSG) are once again sponsoring this month’s event. Come and mingle with your colleagues and see the Pat Nelson Graduate Conference Center and GSG offices.  Along with the Graduate School and GSG, the conference center was funded by a donation by the late Patricia Nelson, wife of Michigan Tech chemical engineering alumnus Charles J. Nelson ’36 (deceased).

Seminar on Submitting your Dissertation, Thesis, or Report

Students planning on finishing a dissertation, thesis, or report in fall 2014 or spring 2015 are invited a seminar designed to help students understand the submission process and answer questions about it. Faculty and staff who assist students with submissions are also welcome to attend.

Once you register, you will receive a confirmation with the location and a reminder of the date and time, or information on how to join us online.

If you are unable to join us, this seminar will be taped and available online after the event.

Michigan AGEP Alliance 2014 Fall Conference

The Alliance for Graduate Education and Professoriate (AGEP) provides funds and fellowship awards to increase the pool of candidates pursuing masters or doctoral degrees for postsecondary faculty teaching careers from underrepresented backgrounds.  A featured experience for program fellows is the annual fall conference for networking, and academic career development.

We are excited to welcome you and your colleagues to participate in the 2014 Fall Michigan AGEP Alliance Conference on Saturday September 13.  The conference will be held in East Lansing, MI at the Kellogg Conference Center and Hotel. All AGEP and KCP affiliated graduate students, undergraduates, educators, alumni and professionals are welcome.

STAR Announcement LIBS Sensor for Water Quality

Through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) this posting seeks motivated, post-graduates (MS and PhD) interested in research as part of the geologic and environmental sciences focus area research team at NETL.  The optical sensing team within the Material Characterization Division of NETL is looking for a candidate to perform continuing research on the development of a laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) sensor for water quality measurements.  NETL’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) conducts research to advance the clean production and efficient utilization of domestic energy resources.

DOE’s Science Graduate Student Research Program Accepting Applicants

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is currently accepting applications for its 2014 solicitation. The SCGSR program provides the opportunity for U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of three to twelve consecutive months with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers.

The program is now open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions. The supplemental award provides for additional costs of living and travel expenses directly associated with the SCGSR research project during the award period. Applications are due 5:00pm EDT on Wednesday, September 24 and the Office of Science expects to issue approximately 100 awards for project periods anytime between January and September 2015.  ​

Facilitators Sought for Fall Graduate School Orientation

Facilitators are an important part of the Graduate School’s orientation. They lead discussion at a table with seven new graduate students, and help to answer their questions. Faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to participate this fall and help mentor the next group of scholars at Michigan Tech.

New facilitators will attend a training session on either August 21, 10 a.m.-noon, or August 25, 1-3 p.m. The training will ensure everyone is comfortable and confident with the material being presented.

All facilitators will participate in orientation, 1-4:30 p.m. on August 27. Please note that this is a time change from previous years, designed to accommodate students’ requests for an afternoon start.

Nominations open for 2014 CGS/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award

Nominations are now open for the 2014 Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award. Please submit nominations to the Graduate School no later than 4pm, June 25, 2014, following our online instructions. This year, nominations are being accepted from dissertations in the fields of:

  1. mathematics, physical sciences, and engineering
  2. social sciences

Michigan Tech may nominate one student in each field. PhD students who have completed all of their degree requirements between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2014, are eligible. The fields of competition for 2015 will be Biological/Life Sciences and Humanities.

Nominations must be delivered to Debra Charlesworth in the Graduate School no later than 4 p.m. on June 25, 2014; e-mail nominations are preferred.  Contact Debra Charlesworth (ddc@mtu.edu) if you have any questions about the competition.
