EPA Positions Available in Research Triangle Park, NC and Cincinnati, OH

The EPA has three immediate openings at two of their facilities. The Research Triangle Park facility is looking for Data Modelling and Web Applications Support for the National Center for Computational Toxicology. Positions are geared towards master’s and bachelor’s graduates (respectively) in engineering, computer science, or related fields. Primary tasks include providing biological, chemical, and toxicology database and web application support.

The facility in Cincinnati is looking for a Water Supply and Resource Communications Assistant. This position is geared towards bachelor’s graduates in communications, environmental science, and engineering. Primary job tasks for the successful applicant will include a wide variety of communications support activities, with an emphasis on preparing accomplishment reports, developing presentation materials, and project summary sheets that describe research activities of the Water Supply/Water Resources Division.

Biostatistics Prospective Student Day Fall 2014

DEPARTMENT OF BIOSTATISTICS PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENT INFORMATION DAY

The event will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 in Ann Arbor MI, and provides an opportunity for students who may be interested in graduate study in Biostatistics to learn about our program and the University and meet our faculty.  There will be presentations by students and faculty providing examples of ongoing work in the department, summarizing job opportunities and career prospects, and providing guidance on admission policies and financial support.

This includes both undergraduate and Masters students who have identified Biostatistics and related fields as an area of interest, but also students who are completing undergraduate degrees in Math, Statistics, Biology, Computer Science and related disciplines that are beginning to explore their future options. With the current great need for students who can bridge the fields of mathematics, statistics, biology, medicine and computer science, prospects for our graduates have never been brighter.

Middle, High School Students: Sign Up for Free Computer Programming Lessons

The Department of Computer Science is offering local students free, hands-on instruction in the basics of computer programming and computer science.

Starting Sept. 13, Copper Country Programmers meets from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays during the academic year at the Van Pelt and Opie Library.  Computer science faculty and students will teach the fundamentals of programming, starting with simple languages like HTML and BASIC and progressing to the well known and widely used Java language.

International Summer School 2014 on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences

Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from institutions in Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States are invited to apply for the fifth International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences, to be held June 1-6, 2014, in Budapest, Hungary.

The summer school is sponsored by the European Union Seventh Framework Program’s Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe Implementation Phase project (PRACE-3IP), U.S. National Science Foundation’s Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project, RIKEN Advanced Insti­tute for Computational Science (RIKEN AICS), and Compute/Calcul Canada.

Leading American, Canadian, European and Japanese computational scientists and HPC technologists will offer instruction on a variety of topics, including:

  • Access to EU, U.S., Japanese and Canadian HPC-infrastructures
  • HPC challenges by discipline (e.g., bioinformatics, computer science, chemistry, and physics)
  • HPC programming proficiencies
  • Performance analysis & profiling
  • Algorithmic approaches & numerical libraries
  • Data-intensive computing
  • Scientific visualization

2nd annual Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Heidelberg, Germany

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) are pleased to announce that they will sponsor a maximum of 20 young researchers to attend the 2nd annual Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Heidelberg, Germany, from September 21 through 26, 2014.

The Computational Data Analytics Research Group (CDAG) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has multiple openings for Graduate Interns in the field of Data Analytics Research.
