The University of Alaska Fairbanks announces the opening of applications for its 2021 Arctic Innovator Program.

Fairbanks, AK – The University of Alaska Fairbanks today announced the opening of applications for its 2021 Arctic Innovator Program.  The application deadline is January 8, 2021.  To learn more or apply, visit: https://orise.orau.gov/arctic-innovators/.

The Arctic Innovator program provides early career innovators and entrepreneurs the opportunity to spend up to two years developing their technology at a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory and University of Alaska Fairbanks pursuing commercialization.

The Arctic Innovator program is open to early career professionals:

  • who currently have or will have a graduate degree in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics related field before the program start date;
  • with a technology or area of research that they are interested in developing toward real-world adoption; and
  • whose technology or area of research addresses Arctic-based challenges and aligns with U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Manufacturing Office Strategic Goals (energy.gov/eere/amo/about-us).

This program, formally titled the Arctic Advanced Manufacturing Innovator Program, provides selected Innovators with the resources and guidance to maximize their likelihood of success.  Innovators receive: a competitive personal stipend, a travel and training allowance, health insurance, a mentor at University of Alaska Fairbanks and a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory, and space and collaborative support at each organization.  Innovators also have the adventure of living in Alaska while working on Arctic-related challenges.

Nathan Prisco, a 2020 Arctic Innovator, is representative of the passion and skill that the Arctic Advanced Manufacturing Innovator Program is seeking in candidates.  Prisco is working on ammonia-based technologies for improving energy production.  He explained that the program offers him “a great way to get science out of the laboratory and into the world at large.”  Prisco says he was attracted to the significant research and commercialization support while also being “intrigued by Alaska, both in its pristine wilderness and the feeling that there is an incredible opportunity in the last frontier.”  To read more about Prisco’s experience, visit: https://uaf.edu/oipc/news/2020/Welcome-Arctic-Innovator-Dr-Nathan-Prisco.php.

NASA Internship Program at Glenn Research Center

The Office of Education (OE) at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) is currently recruiting for the NASA Internship Program at Glenn.  This is a 10-week paid internship program for eligible college students, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as paid fellowships for faculty members.  The dates of the two summer sessions are as follows:

  • Session #1:  June 5, 2017 – August 11, 2017
  • Session #2:  June 12, 2017 – August 18, 2017

 Participants have the opportunity to work with some of the Nation’s most talented scientists and engineers advancing  careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and non-STEM majors that lend support to the NASA mission. Participating in internships and fellowship programs is an important part of the personal growth and professional development of college students and faculty.  At NASA GRC, we understand how beneficial these opportunities are for participants of all backgrounds.

2017 L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellowships

Applications for the 2017 L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program are now open and are due on Friday, February 3, 2017. The application and more information about the program can befound at www.lorealusa.com/forwomeninscience.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program recognizes and rewards the contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations.  More than 2,250 women scientists in over 110 countries have been recognized since the program began in 1998.

In the US, the For Women In Science fellowship program awards five post‐doctoral women scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each. Applicants are selected from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering, and mathematics who are committed to serving as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program

From its inception, the goal of the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program has been to increase the number of STEM professionals in the U.S. workforce.  The NDSEG Fellowship Program is a three-year funding opportunity for students in or near the beginning stages of their overall graduate study and it is meant for students who plan to pursue research-based doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.

The program provides awarded fellows with:
• 36 months of full tuition and mandatory fee coverage at any accredited U.S. institution;
• A $1,000 medical health insurance allowance per each year of the three-year program tenure;
• And $102,000.00 in stipend payments over three years.

Students can start applying to the program as early as their undergraduate senior year and as late as the start of their third year of overall graduate study. This year’s deadline for a 2017 award is December 9, 2016 at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

GradSWE Workshop — Developing Confident Leadership Skills

Join the Graduate Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE) at 6 p.m. tomorrow (March 17) in Chem Sci 215 for a professional development workshop,”Developing Confident Leadership Skills”, led by Ruth Archer.

Archer is the Manager of Process Improvement at Michigan Tech and the president of the Superior Leadership Institute. The workshop will help improve your leadership skills and confidence as you take on these roles in the future.

U.S. Department of Energy Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship Program (MLEF)

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. EPA Positions Available in Research Triangle Park, NC and Cincinnati, OH

The EPA has three immediate openings at two of their facilities. The Research Triangle Park facility is looking for Data Modelling and Web Applications Support for the National Center for Computational Toxicology. Positions are geared towards master’s and bachelor’s graduates (respectively) in engineering, computer science, or related fields. Primary tasks include providing biological, chemical, and toxicology database and web application support.

The facility in Cincinnati is looking for a Water Supply and Resource Communications Assistant. This position is geared towards bachelor’s graduates in communications, environmental science, and engineering. Primary job tasks for the successful applicant will include a wide variety of communications support activities, with an emphasis on preparing accomplishment reports, developing presentation materials, and project summary sheets that describe research activities of the Water Supply/Water Resources Division.

Apply for Sigma Xi’s Grants-in-Aid of Research program

Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for research funding through Sigma Xi’s Grants-in-Aid of Research program.

The deadline is October 15, 2014.

The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.

APAM 2014 Scholarship Applications Available – deadline Oct 6

APAM Scholarship Program ensures the future of the asphalt industry and that of asphalt as America’s leading choice in paving materials.

Purpose

  • An incentive for students to be interested in the asphalt paving industry
  • A workforce with training in asphalt technology
  • An incentive for colleges/universities to offer training in asphalt technology

Eligibility

  • The scholarship program currently provides funding for undergraduate or graduate students who are U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year college or university or two-year technical institution in Michigan and are interested in pursuing a career in the HMA Paving Industry.
  • Financial need will not be considered and scholarship awards are renewable up to two years or graduation, whichever occurs first, on the basis of satisfactory academic performance and continued eligibility for the program.
