Formatting help available for dissertations, theses, and reports

Are you working on formatting corrections for your dissertation, thesis, or report?  Do you need help?

Join Harriet King, coordinator of the Graduate School Communications Assistance Program for group work hours in the Library. These workshops are provided at no charge to students working on a dissertation, thesis, or report. Harriet is skilled with MS Office, Open Office, and Adobe Acrobat Pro, and can provide group tutoring and assistance during these open times:

Seminar: Completing your graduate degree

The Graduate School has recently launched improvements to our web page and MyMichiganTech that will help students, faculty, and staff understand the steps required to complete a graduate degree.  Join us on campus or online to learn about these improvements and have your questions answered.

The seminar will be taped and put on our web site for people who are interested in the topic, but unable to attend at that time.

EndNote workshops announcement

The J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library is offering introductory EndNote workshops. EndNote is a citation management software that helps you easily create and manage bibliographic information and incorporate references into your writing.

Upcoming sessions will be held:

EndNote Basic I – Tuesday, September 16 , 5:00 p.m.

This workshop will introduce users to creating and managing references using the citation management software EndNote. No prior knowledge of EndNote is necessary. In this workshop participants will learn how to construct an Endnote Library in order to effectively organize references and create custom and smart groups to efficiently manage references.

EndNote Basic II – Thursday, September 25, 6:15 p.m.

This workshop will introduce users to incorporating EndNote Library citations into a written document (MS Word). Attending EndNote Basic I or prior knowledge of building and managing an EndNote Library is recommended. In this workshop participants will learn how to successfully incorporate Endnote Library references into their writing process (MS Word), and locate, identify, and import specialized output styles.

Our instruction rooms have EN X7 on Windows workstations. Attendees may bring their own laptops with EN X7 downloaded prior to the session. Visit the library’s Citation Support page to download.

GSG’s Lunch n Learn on Information Technology & Library Services

GSG’s first Lunch and Learn of the Fall semester will be held on Monday, September 8th.   This lunch-n-learn session will focus on various services provided by Information technology and Van Pelt and Opie Library on campus. The event is followed by a brief questionnaire session.

Students planning on finishing a dissertation, thesis, or report in summer 2014 or fall 2014 are invited a seminar designed to help students understand the submission process and answer questions about it. Faculty and staff who assist students with submissions are also welcome to attend.

Once you register, you will receive a confirmation with the location and a reminder of the date and time, or information on how to join us online.

If you are unable to join us, this seminar will be taped and available online after the event.

Workshops and Certificates for Instructors Available

The Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) offers a comprehensive curriculum for Michigan Tech faculty and graduate teaching assistants.  Consider attending a workshop that interests you or complete a block of three workshops to earn a certificate.

Several professional development workshops are scheduled for the upcoming weeks.  Pedagogy-focused workshops (which meet for two, 2-hour sessions) include Grading and Learner-Centered Classroom. In addition, several 1-hour workshops are scheduled that focus on in-class (e.g., iClickers) and out-of-class (Canvas and more) education technologies to deliver instructional content.  Please refer to the CTL website to register for a workshop.  If you don’t find what you are looking for, you can request a workshop for yourself or a group or contact us at 7-2046 to request a private consultation.

CTL Module: Incorporating Information Literacy into Instruction

The Van Pelt and Opie Library and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invite faculty and graduate students to attend a module, consisting of three one-hour sequential workshops, Incorporating Information Literacy into Instruction.

Instruction and Learning Librarian Sarah Lucchesi is delivering the module through the CTL’s University Teaching and Learning (UTL) Seminars program. In this module, using the framework of Michigan Tech information literacy rubric for undergraduate students (learning goal #6), we will explore the library’s information resources, options for assistance with additional instruction and assignment elements that allow students to practice each of the information literacy skills.

Faculty and graduate students are welcome to register only for this three-workshop series, or as a part of the complete UTL Course Design program.

The workshop sessions are scheduled for Monday, March 4, 18, and 25 from 11 a.m., to 12 p.m., in Library 244.

Register by 12 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Forum on University Finances and Budget Process

The University Senate, Staff Council, Graduate Student Government, and Undergraduate Student Government is hosting a forum on “University Finances and Budget Preparation/Planning Process” on Friday, Jan. 31 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Dow 642.

David Reed, VP for research, will give a short presentation on:
1) The current University financial situation at the mid-point of FY14
2) Where we are in the FY15 budget preparation/planning process
