WMTU 91.9fm Houghton’s annual music festival, Keweenawesomefest, is back! Get ready for March 17th and 18th, when 12 awesome acts are going to blow your minds! KFest is happening in McArdle Theater in the Walker Arts & Humanities Building. Doors open at 5:30, music starts at 6:00 and goes until 12:00 midnight. Painting for a Purpose with MTU Relay for Life

Painting for a Purpose: MTU Relay for Life is holding a canvas painting event on Monday, March 20th at 7 pm in the MUB. The cost is $7 for students, $10 for adults. Rozsa Presents a “Marimba Concert & Poetry Night

What is a Marimba? Think of a very large wooden xylophone, the national instrument of Guatemala. The Rozsa Center and Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents Guatemalan writer Hugo Gordillo, and collaborator Zach l’Italian, who will read selections of Gordillo’s new poems (in Spanish and in English), in a “Marimba Concert & Poetry Night,” on Thursday, March 23 at 6:00 PM in the Rozsa lobby. This event was developed in collaboration with Michigan Tech music students and conducted by Mike Christiansen, Michigan Tech’s Director of Bands. The Marimba Concert and Poetry event are free and all are welcome. The Michigan Tech Marimbist Band will play several marimba selections, arranged by Mike Christianson. This event is the closing reception for ChickenBus: a U.S. Guatemalan experience, an exhibit by VPA faculty member Lisa Gordillo in the Rozsa gallery. Several poems in Hugo Gordillo’s collection inspired the art in this exhibit. The exhibit will be open before and after the concert.

Alpha Delta Alpha Top Chef Event

The sisters of Alpha Delta Alpha welcome you to join us for the ADA version of Top Chef! It’s going to be a night of delicious food, fun and great company! Two separate teams will be asked to create the same dish, and at the end, the dishes will be judged by one of our sisters. So grab a friend, and head on down to the DHH kitchenette on Thursday, March 23rd at 5 p.m. We hope to see you there!

Celebrate Norooz, Iranian New Year, with the Iranian Community at Michigan Tech

Iranian Community at Michigan Tech is celebrating the Iranian New Year (Norooz) for the fourth time, on Michigan Tech Campus. Last year, President Mroz and the Provost attended our Norooz event, for the first time. I would like to share the information about this year’s event with you:

Dr. Lily Afshar, a world-class guitarist, from Memphis, TN

She is a Professor of Guitar, at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis, and the first woman in the world to be awarded a Doctor of Music in Guitar Performance in 1989. (Click for full biography)

Celebrate 50 Years of Jazz at Michigan Tech

Join us in celebrating “50 Years Of Great Jazz At Michigan Tech – The Gold Standard”, at our annual Don Keranen Memorial Concert, the final jazz concert of our performance season, on Saturday, March 25, 7:30 PM at the Rozsa Center. There will be a reception following the concert in the Rozsa Lobby.

According to Mike Irish, Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan Tech, “Don originated the Jazz Lab Band in 1967, and since then, it has grown into one of the most respected non-major jazz programs in the country…We have so much to be thankful for from these 50 years! We hope that you enjoy this evening’s concert on many levels. Please join us for a reception in the Rozsa lobby following the concert!

Upper Peninsula – NE Wisconsin ACS Student Research Symposium

The UP Local section of the American Chemical Society is hosting its annual student research symposium on March 25, at the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
This event has been a great opportunity for undergrad and graduate students to present their chemistry-related research in a relaxed, poster-style format. This has been a great event in the past, where we get lots of participation from many different academic departments.
Cash prizes will be awarded, similar to previous years!

The Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club is excited to present the Modern Manhattan Gala themed Charity Ball on Saturday April 1 at the Continental Fire Co. from 7:00 to 11:30 pm.

All proceeds from ticket sales will be given to the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter, which offers victims of domestic violence, and their children, temporary shelter and provides counseling to achieve safety and find resources to escape violence and abuse. All services are free and confidential.

Speaker and Author Aspen Matis

Night of Hope sponsored by Relay for Life at Michigan Tech and the Houghton Community Relay

Relay for Life of Michigan Tech will be co-hosting an event called the Night of Hope with the Houghton Community Relay on April 8th. This event will be in the Rozsa from 5-8pm. This event will be focused on honoring survivors of cancer, and those who have been caregivers for loved ones with cancer. Tickers are $10, and this ticket includes dinner! Students who have survived cancer also have an opportunity to get their ticket sponsored by Aspirus.

There will be a silent auction, Survivor and Caregiver ceremonies, and informative presentations. Students can contact Brooke Basto at bebasto@mtu.edu to purchase a ticket. Please help support the American Cancer Society and all of the work they do to support people after they hear the words “you have cancer.”

Michigan Tech Choirs Present Benefit Concert: Music for a Sacred Space

Please join us for an evening of sacred choral music presented in its natural habitat, the local treasure that is the magnificent space of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden. The concert will feature music of many different countries and cultures, with devotional music ranging from South Africa, Germany, England, Canada, and 19th-century America. The Michigan Tech Concert Choir and conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers, Jared Anderson, Conductor, present Music for a Sacred Space on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 7:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lake Linden.

Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning Saturday April 1st

Student Activities, the Undergraduate Student Government, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion are hosting Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, a spring semester day of service similar to the fall semester event, Make a Difference Day.

Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Check-in and educational demonstrations about Cesar Chavez will occur on Friday, March 31 in the Memorial Union Building Alumni Lounge from 3:00-5:00pm. If you’re unable to check-in on Friday, we will also have check-in on Saturday, April 1 in the same location from 8:00-10:00am

Volunteer projects will vary but most will happen locally from 10am-12pm. Everyone who participates will receive a free t-shirt for their volunteer efforts!

The Pavlis Honors College is now accepting applications for Fall 2017!

You are eligible to apply if you have 2-4 years remaining on campus. PHC’s Learning Community offers 6 distinct pathways on which students may build their honors program: Global Leadership, Peace Corps Prep, Research Scholars, Enhanced Enterprise Experience (E³ ), New Venture, and Custom Pathway. Most of you at Tech are already doing the things that PHC requires from its graduates. We have a team of faculty and staff from various disciplines that will help you package it into a rewarding and meaningful education that differentiates PHC students from their peers. The Michigan Tech Student Foundation (MTSF) and the Student Philanthropy Council invite you to make your upcoming commencement day even more meaningful by participating in the Class Tribute Program.  It’s an opportunity for you to recognize someone special to you in the printed commencement program.  

Not only will tributes appear in the commencement program, but they will also be displayed on the new video scoreboard in the ice arena! It’s gonna be crazy!

You have the option to upload a picture with your tribute!   Maybe a special picture of you and your parents?  Spouse?  Best friend? Imagine that person/s sitting in the audience and seeing the photo and tribute appear on the big screen!

Food Pantry Volunteers Needed

Husky Food Access Network (HuskyFAN) is in need of volunteers to keep the food pantry open. The pantry is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday.

Volunteers are needed for any amount of time they are able to offer.

University Launches CommUNITY Campaign

The CommUNITY campaign is a new campus-wide effort to promote the values set forth in Michigan Tech’s Strategic Plan.
“We Inspire Community” is the first value listed in the Strategic Plan. It states, “We inspire an engaged community that actively seeks improvement through acceptance and understanding.”
The CommUNITY campaign will include promotional materials and programming geared toward raising awareness and promoting actions that reflect these values.
Throughout the year, you will be introduced to multiple ways to engage with this campaign.

Sexual Violence Support Group

T.E.A.L (To Empower And Liberate) is a group that provides support to Michigan Tech Students who have experienced sexual violence including childhood sexual abuse or sexual assault. The group provides support to individuals of recent or past sexual violence in a safe, non-judgmental group. With the help of group support individuals can find understanding, help by sharing their struggles and triumphs with one another, and begin to put their lives back together. Through discussion, support and education we can help one another. This group meets every other Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The next meeting is Thursday March 30, 2017 on campus. PHC Speaker Series

Victor Vukorpa, a Senior Master Black Belt in Six Sigma at Whirlpool Corporation and Senior Lead of Whirlpool’s Global Operational Excellence (OPEX) program, will be sharing his experiences with Tech via Google Hangouts on Monday, March 13th in DOW 642 at 4pm. His rpassion is teaching, mentoring, and applying Six Sigma and Lean concepts and tools to solve technical problems. He became a Whirlpool certified Black Belt in 1998 and a certified Master Black Belt in 2004. Mr. Vukorpa received his BSME from Michigan Technological University in 1982 and he received his MSME from Western Michigan University in 1993.

Save the date for this exciting discussion. All faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Michigan Tech Choirs Present Benefit Concert: Music for a Sacred Space

Seeking Nominations for the 23rd Annual Student Leadership Awards

At Michigan Tech we are blessed with students that are crazy smart, motivated and adventurous. As faculty and staff, we partner with these students to inspire community, scholarship, possibilities, accountability, and tenacity. And we realize how lucky we are to be able to work alongside them in their academic and career pursuits. Now is the time to recognize these students for their commitment, enthusiasm, and leadership. On behalf of the University, we are seeking nominations for the President’s Award for Leadership, Vice President for Student Affairs and Advancement Award for Service, and various other student leadership awards. The recipient of each award will be honored at the 23rd Annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at 6:00 PM, Friday, April 14, 2017, in the Ballroom of the Memorial Union Building.

Husky Food Access Network (HuskyFAN) is in need of volunteers to keep the food pantry open. The pantry is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday.

The CommUNITY campaign is a new campus-wide effort to promote the values set forth in Michigan Tech’s Strategic Plan.
“We Inspire Community” is the first value listed in the Strategic Plan. It states, “We inspire an engaged community that actively seeks improvement through acceptance and understanding.”
The CommUNITY campaign will include promotional materials and programming geared toward raising awareness and promoting actions that reflect these values.
Throughout the year, you will be introduced to multiple ways to engage with this campaign.

UP Health System Great Bear Chase Ski Race

The UP Health System Great Bear Chase ski race will take place on Saturday, March 11th at Swedetown Trails in Calumet. The race committee is looking for student groups who would be willing to help out. The Great Bear Chase Committee will make a financial donation to any student group who volunteers!

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, March 11^th to help with aid stations, registration, parking, finish line (bag attendant, finish line attendant, back-up timing), awards, result printing and  banquet. Shifts are at various times throughout the day.

If you are interested in volunteering as an organization (and receive a financial donation!!), please contact Laura Bulleit (lbulleit@mtu.edu) with the name of your organization, the name of students willing to volunteer, and the time preference (early morning, mid morning, afternoon, etc) for volunteering.

Sexual Violence Support Group

T.E.A.L (To Empower And Liberate) is a group that provides support to Michigan Tech Students who have experienced sexual violence including childhood sexual abuse or sexual assault. The group provides support to individuals of recent or past sexual violence in a safe, non-judgmental group. With the help of group support individuals can find understanding, help by sharing their struggles and triumphs with one another, and begin to put their lives back together. Through discussion, support and education we can help one another. This group meets every other Thursday from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The next meeting is Thursday March 15, 2017 on campus. 8th Annual CopperDog Race

Kick off your Spring Break on Friday, March 3rd by joining IPS at the famous CopperDog 150 dogsled race in Historic Downtown Calumet, Michigan. We will cheer on the racers and dogs at the start of their three day, 135 mile journey from Calumet to Copper Harbor and back. Our bus leaves the MUB bus stop at 5:30 pm and returns to campus at 8:30 pm.

PHC Speaker Series

Victor Vukorpa, a Senior Master Black Belt in Six Sigma at Whirlpool Corporation and Senior Lead of Whirlpool’s Global Operational Excellence (OPEX) program, will be sharing his experiences with Tech via Google Hangouts on Monday, March 13th in DOW 642 at 4pm. His rpassion is teaching, mentoring, and applying Six Sigma and Lean concepts and tools to solve technical problems. He became a Whirlpool certified Black Belt in 1998 and a certified Master Black Belt in 2004. Mr. Vukorpa received his BSME from Michigan Technological University in 1982 and he received his MSME from Western Michigan University in 1993.

Public Auditions for the Classic Musical West Side Story

Michigan Tech’s “Tech Theatre Company” will hold public auditions for the classic musical West Side Story, next week, on Monday, January 16 – Wednesday, January 18. West Side Story changed the very nature of American Musical Theatre. With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by a young Stephen Sondheim, the play was grounded in a distinctively “modern” sound.   Arthur Laurents’ book is inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where two young lovers cross the boundaries of an urban battlefield, questioning the cultural isolation that will allow them to live happily in a special place.   A place where everyone can grow beyond the confines of hate, poverty, and violence. Parts are available for singers and dancers, and a small number of non-singing roles.  The first night, Monday, auditions will be from 7:00 – 10:00 pm  (SINGING/DANCING/CHORUS ROLES); on Tuesday, January 17, 7:00 – 10:00 pm (NON-SINGING ROLE AUDITIONS ONLY); and on Wednesday, January 18, 7:00 – 10:00 pm(SINGING/DANCING/CHORUS ROLES).  Auditions will be held the Rozsa Center, in room 120 (Choir Room). Pigs N Heat Charity Event

Michigan Tech students are invited and encouraged to attend the Pigs N Heat Hockey game on Saturday, February 4  at the SDC. This Charity Event assists Fire and Accident victims between Houghton and Keweenaw Communities.

Police and Fire come together once a year to play a hockey game to raise money for the Charity, we have overwhelming support from both communities. What you may or may not know is that we consider Michigan Tech and Finlandia University part of our community and we do assist you in your time of need if you become a victim of a fire or an accident victim. We need your support by way of buying a ticket to the game and coming out to the event. There are many excellent prizes that we are raffling off, such as a $1000.00, $750.00 and a $500.o0 cash prizes as well as a  sky box at the game which will be raffled off a week prior to the game with food and beverages included. A rifle and shotgun will also be raffled off along with other great prizes.

Help us make this a success and have some fun before Winter Carnival. Hope to see you there.

The Fishing Club Hosting a Winter Tournament

Sign up for a Winter Tournament in Chassell Bay on January 14, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Registration starts @ 7:30 am. Cost is $10/person with an optional $3 Big Fish winner take all! Scoring will consist of total length for three combined legal size fish. All MDNR rules apply. Cash payouts are as follows:

Social Justice Lecture Series Presents: 28th Annual MLK Banquet

This year Dr. Robert Scott will be our keynote speaker. Dr. Scott manages several key projects in support of the diversity and outreach strategy and programs across the Engineering College at the University of Michigan.

Summer Youth Programs Seeking 2017 Staff

The Center for Pre-College Outreach is welcoming applicants to join the 2017 Summer Youth Programs (SYP) staff. We are hiring a variety of positions, including residence counselors, activity counselor’s, desk staff, chaperones and more. Working for SYP is about more than a summer job: staff members build leadership skills, impact the lives of over 1,000 pre-college students, and contribute to engaging students in the excitement of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Wahtera Center Hiring Student Staff for 2017-18

The Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success is hiring student staff positions for 2017-18. These positions include orientation team leaders (OTLs), academic success coaches, peer teaching assistants, ExSEL peer mentors and a commuter and transfer assistant.

These positions provide students with great opportunities to engage with and encourage their peers and develop their communication and leadership skills.

New applicants are required to attend one short information session before receiving their link to apply. The next session will be held at 5 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in Fisher 138.

Applicants are required to have a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA to be considered. Contact the staff of the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success at success@mtu.edu with any questions.

Film Board Presents a Weekend of Holiday Films

Finals Stressing You Out? Need a Break from Cramming? Join Film Board for a Study Break! All day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we will be watching holiday movies in Fisher 135.  The theatre will be a quiet space to relax, read a book, or get away from your roommate while casually watching a holiday film.  Come and go as you please and concessions will be available.  Hope to see you there!

Join us on Tuesday, December 6 from 6-7 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge as we talk about the renowned StrengthsQuest tool. Attendees will be introduced to the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment, recognize the unique, but different talents of others, and evaluate their own understanding about what they do best. The Undergraduate Student Government will also share how they’ve used the assessment to help make their executive board more efficient.
