Winter Carnival Comedian – Drew Lynch

“Do something every day that scares you” is a motto Drew lives by. In 2015, Drew Lynch captured the hearts of America with his Golden Buzzer performance on Season 10 of America’s Got Talent. “The person I was before would probably never hangout with who I am today” is the statement that resonated most in capturing audiences across the country, as they fell in love with his charming wit and genuine vulnerability every week of the competition.Drew becoming a comedian was almost as unintentional as capturing America’s hearts. At the young age of 19, Drew moved to Los Angeles with aspirations of becoming an actor; a dream he had since he was a kid. A freak accident just a year into his acting career left Drew with a severe stutter and crushed his hopes of ever performing again.But his continued drive to become an entertainer forced him in a different direction, often reflecting on the “softball that humbly changed his life and gave him a career”. The relatability of Drew’s real-life situations in dealing with a stutter propelled him each week of the competition – advancing to the finals and ultimately landing second place on season 10 of America’s Got Talent. Drew attributes much of his success from his ability to be honest- genuinely facing the “elephant in the room” head on.

Stage Revue

Come support your favorite organizations as they put on a great show! Stage Revue is a performance given by multiple groups of Michigan Tech students participating in individual short sketches, with a focus on comedy. These sketches will all be based on the Winter Carnival Theme: “Come One Come All to our 100th Carnival,” celebrating both traditional carnival themes as well as the rich history of 100 years of Winter Carnival. Expect college-level humor, which may be unsuitable for younger children, but no overly obscene content.

Husky Connect Mentor

Husky Connect Mentoring Program is looking for Mentors! Would you like to help new incoming students to adjust to new environments and to achieve their goals? Then you will be a great Husky Connect mentor! The Husky Connect Mentorship Program is looking for Huskies willing to give new students the value of their experiences. Each Connect Mentor is assigned one or two first-year students to begin interacting within the summer before the fall semester starts. Husky Connect Mentors receive compensation for the time they spend with their mentees. You can find more information and apply to be a Husky Connect mentor on our website. SDH Open House

We would like to invite you to our upcoming Sustainability Open House on Thursday, February 10th from 4-7 pm over Winter Carnival weekend! Come learn about our sustainable systems including composting, hydroponics, aquaponics, a solar array, a beehive, energy-efficient appliances, a zero-waste household, and many more. In addition, all guests will receive free sustainable swag. 
The Sustainability Demonstration House is located at 21680 Woodland Rd, just down the road from East McNair. Parking is available at East McNair, Hillside, and Lot 10E. Masks will be required indoors.

Upcoming Seminar: Career Navigation for Scientists

The Professional Development Committee at the Graduate Student Government and MTU’s Career Services are collaborating to bring you a three part seminar dedicated to navigating careers for scientists. Panels will be made up of professionals across academia and industry within different departments and disciplines. These panels will feature brief speaker introductions, questions about their backgrounds, public Q&A, and breakout rooms for discipline specific questions.

The first panel on February 2nd, 2022 at 6 pm EST will feature MTU graduates from departments of Math, Physics, and Computing. Our prestigious panelists include:
Derek Dykens – graduated with a BS in computer system networking and telecommunications from MTU and is now a Global Retail Industry Strategist for Splunk

Dr. Alexandria Johnson – graduated with a BS in Physics from MTU and went on to Purdue to get her PhD in Atmospheric Science. She is now an Assistant professor at Purdue University.

Dr. Manish Kulkarni – graduated with a MS in Physics from MTU and went on to Case Western Reserve to get his PhD in Biomedical Engineering. He is now working as a Senior Staff Scientist at Diagnostic Solutions and Systems.

Dr. Ruihao Huang – graduated with a PhD in applied mathematics from MTU and is now working for the FDA as a pharmacometrics reviewer.

Cam Bertrand is one of the fastest rising comedy stars in the country.  Cam’s comedy can best be described as “sophisticated ignorance”. He prides himself on being able to turn even the dumbest conversations into ones that will have you up late at night asking yourself “What is that .01% of germs that GermX can’t kill after all this time?!..”

He’s opened for some of the biggest names in comedy today including Bert Kreischer, Joe Rogan, Pete Davidson, Michael Che, and Mike Epps. He was a contributing writer on two seasons of MTV’s Wild’N’Out (Seasons 11 and 12), has over 100 million views on TikTok (@camthecomic) and his recent Dry Bar Comedy special has been seen by millions online.  In 2021 Cam became a finalist on season 16 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent!

RSO Spring Involvement Fair

Looking for a way to get involved? The Spring Involvement Fair is a new tradition that takes place each January, giving new and returning students an opportunity to explore more options for their involvement.

Virtual Oasis- January 20th from 6-8 pm on Involvement Link
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) will have virtual meeting rooms attached to their organization’s description on the Virtual Oasis Involvement Link event page. New and returning students can browse through participating RSOs and join their virtual meeting rooms to chat with current members about their organization. Attending students will be entered into the prize drawing which includes Husky apparel, Hydroflask water bottles, and gift cards!

Leadership Styles and When to Use Them

Visionary Leadership, Servant Leadership, Transformational Leadership – you’ve likely heard these words, but do you understand what each means? There are many different leadership styles that you might embody and your leadership style might change based on the action you are taking or the relationship you are building. Broomball is Hiring Referees!

We are once again short of refs! When we sent out our announcement that we had enough refs, 75 people had applied. Since then, only:
60 People confirmed the position
45 People submitted paperwork
28 People showed up to ref training

This is not enough.
We will be doing a few things to fix this problem:
Ref wages are increased to $11/hr, $11.25/hr for returning

We will be cutting games to fit our ref capacity. We will have off-ice training, followed by an on-ice shadowing of trained refs

Remember:
Refs can choose their own schedule, even just 1-2 shifts per week
You don’t have to know anything about broomball
Shifts are only 3hrs long.
Each person who applies helps save the Season

The Bob Mark Business Model Competition will host up to16 contestants. Priority will be given to those who have completed the Business Model Boot Camp.

Using the Business Model Canvas, students will work with members of the Husky Innovate teaching team to develop a business model for their innovation. We walk through the steps involved to help you understand the relationship between your value proposition and the customers’ needs. The more clearly you understand this relationship, the better your position to launch a winning product or service.

Michigan Tech Recreation: MI CPL Course

Registration is now open for the Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) course at MTU this spring! This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to know to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary. Minimum age of 20 years old and individuals will be responsible for supplying their own ammunition (100 rounds). There will be a firearms proficiency test and a written test that students will have to pass to complete the course. Cost is $150/person with their own equipment and $185/person with rental equipment (9mm pistol). Choose from three different course dates: January 15, February 19, or March 26. Comedian Cam Bertrand

Join Late Night for our first comedian of the Spring semester – Cam Bertrand!! This hilarious event will take place Saturday, January 29 at 10 PM in the MUB Ballroom. 

Cam Bertrand is one of the fastest rising comedy stars in the country.  Cam’s comedy can best be described as “sophisticated ignorance”. He prides himself on being able to turn even the dumbest conversations into ones that will have you up late at night asking yourself “What is that .01% of germs that GermX can’t kill after all this time?!..”

He’s opened for some of the biggest names in comedy today including Bert Kreischer, Joe Rogan, Pete Davidson, Michael Che, and Mike Epps. He was a contributing writer on two seasons of MTV’s Wild’N’Out (Seasons 11 and 12), has over 100 million views on TikTok (@camthecomic) and his recent Dry Bar Comedy special has been seen by millions online.  In 2021 Cam became a finalist on season 16 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent!

2022 Spring Inolvement Fair “At the Beach”

The 2022 Spring Involvement Fair: “At the Beach” is coming back to campus this January! This year’s Fair will contain two components: 

• “Virtual Oasis” will take place on Thursday, January 20th, from 6-8 pm on Involvement Link.
  • RSOs participating in “Virtual Oasis” will be required to provide a link to a virtual meeting room of their choice (i.e. Zoom, Discord, Google Meet).
• “A Walk to the Beach” will take place on Wednesday, January 26th, from 1-4 pm on the first floor of the MUB.
  • Each attending RSO will have one table for their setup.
  • There is limited space available in the MUB, so sign up soon!
• The Fair will feature giveaways, prizes, and snacks for participating students.

Your organization can sign-up for either (or both) of the components here. Sign-up for each RSO only needs to be completed once by any of the RSO’s officers. For more information about the “Virtual Oasis” or “A Walk on the Beach” events, please visit the 2022 Spring Involvement Fair page.

Martin Luther King Jr. 33rd Celebration

The Martin Luther King Jr. 33rd Celebration will be Monday, January 17th, 2022 at 6:00 pm at the Library, a zoom option will be available. Come celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the Center for Diversity Inclusion, including a keynote address from Michigan Tech Alumnae, Dr. Tsitsi Hungwe.
In addition to the celebration, check out the week-long “I Have a Dream” Exhibit in the Library, featuring artwork from MTU students. The exhibit will open following the conclusion of the celebration on January 17th. See the attached flyer for details.

The Graduate Student Government is pleased to announce the official launch of the 60-day pilot program for the premium EDU membership of the cross-platform cloud-based writing assistant application- Grammarly. Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff can use Grammarly EDU via the grammarly.mtu.edu website. Once you log in with your SSO credentials, you will be able to utilize the full features of the Grammarly EDU subscription till December 24. Based on your preference, you can use Grammarly on your browser, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Mac/Desktop, or on your tablet. Overleaf users can use Overleaf textarea to convert LaTex into plain text to use with Grammarly.

We encourage you to use this service in their day-to-day life as much as possible and share your thoughts and feedback with us. As Grammarly will check the punctuation, grammar, spelling errors, you can now focus more on the intellectual content of your writing.
