First Friday Social

The Graduate Student Government invites everyone to join us and relax with the Graduate School and the GSG on the soon to be Graduate Commons, 207 East Street (Ex OAP House, opposite to the MTU Library) from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, September 3th, 2021.

Unwind on a Friday afternoon with your colleagues from across campus at September’s First Friday Social. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Masks are encouraged for the event while not actively eating or drinking. Hope to see you all there!

Artists: Marianne Boruch, Russell Brakefield, Jim Brandenburg, Cindy Crosby, Monte Deignan,
Ned Gannon, Ladislav Hanka, Russell Hart, Sarah Killingsworth, Joyce Koskenmaki, and
Catherine Plank
Location: Hesterberg Hall in the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science
building at Michigan Technological University. 566-950 Macinnes Drive, Houghton, MI 49931.
Park in Lot 18

Project Coyote and CFRES are proud to present the multimedia art exhibition, The Spirit of the
Hunt, featuring many talented artists including Michigan artists: Joyce Koskenmaki and Ladislav
Hanka. This exhibit will be open to the public from August 28th through October 17th, 2021.
There will be a reception with facilitated discussions starting at 4:30pm on Friday, September
3rd.

Our opening event on September 3rd will feature two facilitated discussions. Dr. John
Vucetich (MTU) will lead a discussion on wolf hunts and the value of keystone species. Tanya
Aldred from Great Lakes Indian fish and wildlife commission is giving a talk called “Ma’iingan
(wolf): An Ojibway Perspective”. These discussions and the overall timing of this art exhibit was
chosen to raise awareness and consideration of current proposed legislation for wolf management
in Michigan. Multiple have recently been proposed that could impact the longevity of the wolf
population by altering the Wolf Management Advisory Council. Senate Bill 486 will require
council members to be residents of the Upper Peninsula. House Bills 5078 and 5079 amend the
requirements for council members to include more representation of conservation organizations.
The proposed changes in these three bills could significantly impact the management decisions
of the Michigan wolf population.
All pieces were generously donated by artists with the goal of inspiring coexistence between
people and the wolves and coyotes in the Great Lakes region. The exhibition of their works is
curated by Catherine Plank, a graduate student at the University of Michigan studying Ecosystem
Science and Management. She arranged the artwork to highlight the beauty and value of these
native predators.
All artworks will later be sold, and the proceeds will be donated to Project Coyote, a nonprofit
working to educate and improve the conservation of predators nationwide. Project Coyote is a
North American coalition of scientists, educators, ranchers, and citizen leaders promoting
compassionate conservation and management of native carnivores. The event itself is free and
open to the public M-F 9 am – 4 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

We are also seeking volunteers who have a vehicle they might be willing to drive in the parade or groups who may wish to support others in creating a float. Help Create the 2021 Parade of Nations’ Scavenger Hunt

Does your organization want to help take the community on a Parade of Nations scavenger hunt?  Do you want to spread the word about your country, your culture, your heritage, your traditions, your place in the community, or other interesting information?  Help celebrate our multicultural heritage by signing up to be a “Hide Team” for the 2021 Parade of Nations. The registration form and guidelines for the clues can be found on the Parade of Nations’ website https://www.mtu.edu/international/events/parade-nations/scavenger-hunt/.

“Hide Teams” will create clues about a particular country, cultural heritage, or local organization that will be hidden around the community.  On September 7, the Parade of Nations committee will notify the “Hunt Teams” that have signed up to play that the Scavenger Hunt has begun and will give those teams the first clues.  The clues will then be posted later in the day on the Parade of Nations’ website for anyone in the community who would like to participate.

The scavenger hunt will run through Friday, September 17.  “Hunt Teams” must turn in answers by midnight that day.  Prizes will be awarded at the end of the Parade on Saturday, September 18.  Clues will be left up until October 1 for those who still wish to complete the Scavenger Hunt.

The deadline for Hide Teams to submit their clues and hiding places is Monday, August 23.

Questions or comments about the Parade of Nations scavenger hunt can be emailed to paradeofnations@mtu.edu
