Glad the fall semester is finally over? Ready to celebrate your survival before heading home? Want to enjoy some greenery and a fun tropical holiday tree?

Join the Plant & Gardening Club as we host our first annual white elephant gift exchange! We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the end of the fall semester, the friends we’ve made, and the coming holidays. Anybody is welcome to come to the event which will be held inside The Bubble Greenhouse (between the MEEM and ChemSci building), however, we ask that if you want to receive a gift that you bring a gift. We’ll start at 6pm and end at 8pm!

Hot coffee, tea, cocoa, and food will be provided for the duration of the event! Other activities, such as coloring, card making, decoration creation, and board games, will be provided as well.

Some light guidelines for the gifts:

– We encourage a price cap of $20, if you choose to go over that is your choice, just do not expect a gift of equal value.

– We encourage plant-themed gifts, but they are not mandatory.

– No inappropriate gifts, please.

– No gift shaming, we shouldn’t have to expand on this.

– Have fun with this and be silly!

TUBACHRISTMAS

This annual December event occurs around the world in honor of the first truly great tuba virtuoso, William “Bill” Bell who was born on Christmas Day. Tubists gather yearly in mass numbers around the globe to play songs of the season in performances free to the public. Join Mind Trekkers on Tuesday, December 13th as we welcome 8th-grade students from across the Western UP to campus for the Copper Trail Festival! This event will feature hands-on STEM demonstrations to spark curiosity and showcase career opportunities. Departments, student organizations, and local businesses are invited to participate in the event as exhibitors and volunteers. Mind Trekkers demonstrations can be supplied for student organizations who would like to have a presence at the event!

The event will take place in the SDC Varsity Gym from 9 am – 2:30 pm. Lunch will be provided to all exhibitors and volunteers. It is the first of four festivals in the OneUP Mind Trekkers Tour, a collaboration with UP Michigan Works! and the MiSTEM Network.

The annual forestry Club Christmas tree sale will be taking place Tuesday, December 6th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on lot 14 near the broomball courts.

Ukrainian students on campus together with the Film Board invite you to the screening of the movie “Mr. Jones” which will take place in Fisher 135 on 11/30 at 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM, and 12/1 at 8:30 PM.

The movie is based on the real story of a Welsh journalist, who went to the USSR to discover the horrible truth. The screening is dedicated to the Commemoration Day of the Holodomor Victims – the artificial famine caused by the Soviet regime in Ukraine in 1932-1933.

Chris grew up in a small town outside of Nashville, TN.  He was just a small guy with big dreams, but luckily for you, none of those dreams materialized and he decided to pursue stand-up comedy. Armed with a guitar, Chris’ humor has been described as “edgy and smart,” but that’s probably only because he likes wearing a sweater vest. Make no mistake though – Chris’ innocent and laid-back demeanor compounded with his aggressive hilarity consistently catches crowds off-guard.

Chris has worked with everyone from Last Comic Standing’s Jon Reep to SNL’s Collin Jost. His comedic songs, which often use acoustic melodies to launch into an array of satirical and self-deprecating lyrics, have been met with much approval from Chris’ rapidly growing fan base. Plus, there’s a rumor going around that catching one of Chris’ shows automatically makes you cooler. Maybe it’s just a rumor, but what if it isn’t? Are you really willing to risk it?

With a handful of LeaderShape Institute spots remaining, we have decided to extend the application deadline on a rolling basis. Community Development – Chillos Valley, Ecuador

In collaboration with the Manna Project International, this year’s international alternative spring break trip will work with community organizers in a focus area selected by the group.

All programs seek to “create communities of young leaders that help break the cycle of poverty in underserved communities around the world.” Our group will be able to select a focus area that aligns with our group’s interests. Focus area options include education, health, sports and recreation, business, agriculture, and the environment.

This trip will depart on Friday, March 3, 2023, and fly to our destination for a Saturday arrival. Both lodging and food will be provided by our host organization. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Ecuador on Saturday, March 11th, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to eleven students. Due to support from the Student Activity Fee, this trip will only cost $825 per student which includes food, travel, accommodations, and program materials. Any individual expenses related to passports or other travel necessities will be the responsibility of the student.

In collaboration with the Highland Support Project and Partners in Service, this year’s domestic alternative spring break trip will travel to Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ to work with the Apache Nation. Their programs are primarily based on struggles for food, water, and housing sovereignty. Our group will specifically assist with agricultural projects pertaining to the tribe’s horticulture and produce enterprise, Ndee Bikiyaa, including the planning and building of infrastructures such as raised garden beds and cisterns.

This trip will depart on Friday, March 3, 2023, in a Michigan Tech 15-passenger van. Participants will stay in an Airbnb Cabin near the volunteer site. Most meals will be prepared and provided by the group itself. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Arizona on Saturday, March 11th, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to nine students. Due to support from the Student Activity Fee, this trip will only cost $350 per student which includes all food, travel, accommodations, and program materials.

The Student Development Complex Center will have shortened hours over Thanksgiving Break, November 18 – 27, 2022. Normal Building hours will resume on Monday, November 28.

Each summer for over 50 years Michigan Tech Summer Youth Programs (SYP) has welcomed over a thousand youths from grades 6-11 to campus from across the country and around the world. We need your help to ensure they experience the Michigan Tech community we all know and love.

SYP students come for week-long, hands-on, experiential learning in one (or more) of our 50+ week-long explorations in STEM, Humanities, and Law. During their time at SYP, students gain confidence in their ability to be successful in college as they experience residential life, responsibility in arriving to class on time, and exploring the beauty of the Keweenaw Peninsula. 

We’re looking for passionate individuals who enjoy working with youth and want to inspire the next generation of doers and makers. Each year we hire 50+ undergraduate and graduate students for a variety of rewarding experiences enabling them to build their capacity in leadership, communication, and critical interpersonal skills.

Filing your FAFSA will allow you to be considered for federal, state, and university grants & scholarships, loans, and work-study positions.

The LeaderShape Institute is back for its 27th year at Michigan Tech and YOU could join the community of over 1,000 alumni who have participated in this life-changing leadership retreat!

Applications are open now for the four-day Institute which will be held January 4th-7th at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Not a typical leadership retreat, the Institute is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. By leading with passion, integrity, and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just, and equitable society.

Sixty students will be selected to participate in this year’s Institute. Apply by November 14th to be considered. More information, including the application link, can be found on the Student Leadership and Involvement website.

Recognizing the need for a space on campus for Indigenous Peoples and allies from all walks of life to come together in solidarity, AISES would love to relaunch the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) chapter here at Michigan Tech. AISES is a national, non-profit organization which nurtures the building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. Through its educational programs, AISES provides opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and allies to pursue studies in science, engineering, business, and other academic arenas. AISES provides professional development training so that our student leaders become technologically-informed within Indigenous spaces. Won’t you be the catalyst for the advancement of Indigenous Peoples with us?

The workshop will be held this Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 2 pm in Library 244. Keep an eye out for more workshops geared towards students participating in Design Expo and working on term projects in the spring semester.

The job market is a very important place to be prepared for well ahead of time. It is a time of expectation even when one’s resume has been submitted. Often, it is a time of the unknowns. The question is what should one expect during this period? The African Students Organization is organizing a panel of three speakers from diverse industries to help provide some real-life answers to these questions based on personal experiences as job seekers and recruiters. Whether you intend to seek a job now or later, or you’ll prefer to be a job recruiter yourself; you don’t want to miss this.

November is National Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)! Join the Portage Lake District Library and the Van Pelt and Opie Library all month on Wednesdays from 5-7:30 p.m. in PLDL’s cozy Michigan Room for dedicated writing space, warm beverages, and snacks. Take your mind off of school or work as you participate in this global program that celebrates creative writing!

The LeaderShape Institute is back for its 27th year at Michigan Tech and YOU could join the community of over 1,000 alumni who have participated in this life-changing leadership retreat!

Applications are open now for the four-day Institute which will be held January 4th-7th at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Not a typical leadership retreat, the Institute is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. Through self-assessment, intensive small group discussions, team-building challenges, and more, participants will develop a vision for something they care about. 

By leading with passion, integrity, and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just, and equitable society.

Sixty students will be selected to participate in this year’s Institute. Apply by November 13th to be considered. More information, including the application link, can be found on the Student Leadership and Involvement website.

Winter Carnival 2023 Stage Review Application

Winter Carnival 2023: Tasty Foods for Wintry Moods is coming! Stage Review is a great way to be involved in the festivities! 

Applications will be accepted starting on October 21, 2022, at 9:00 AM and are DUE by Friday, November 18, 2022, at 5:00 PM. A $20 sponsorship fee, in check form only, MUST be turned in to the Blue Key Office by November 18, 2022, before 5:00 PM. Please make checks payable to “Blue Key” and clearly write the organization’s name on the subject line.

You must send at least one representative to the audition meeting/drawing, which will be at 8 PM on Thursday, December 1, 2022, in Fisher 130. Groups with duplicate themes will be informed at this event or prior. This event will be used to answer questions and draw audition times.

Winter Carnival 2023 Royalty Coronation Applications

We are excited to have you apply for candidacy for the 2023 Winter Carnival Royalty Competition! Before applying please be aware of some of your duties and time commitments as a candidate.

Preliminary interviews will be held on Saturday, December 3rd in MUB Ballroom B. If you are not selected by the judges to be a finalist, your responsibilities will end at this time.

If you are selected as a finalist, you will have the opportunity to meet and work with many new people. There is a sizable time commitment to be met with this position, especially during the month of January. The entire process involves interviews, luncheons, rehearsals, and Carnival Week appearances. The finalists meeting on Thursday, December 8th at 7pm, will more fully explain the duties and time commitments of the finalists.

You will be notified the week before Thanksgiving Break of your interview time and location. We hope that you will consider it an honor to be applying as a candidate for the 2023 Winter Carnival Royalty Competition. We look forward to working with you!

The application will close at 5 pm on November 4th.

Participating in the 3MT can be a way for you to develop important communication and research skills, and to participate in the building of research culture at Michigan Tech. Conflict Resolution Workshop

Have you ever been in a situation — in a job interview, meeting, or even a social situation — where you had to talk about your achievements? It’s not easy, is it? Many of us struggle when it comes to talking about our own accomplishments. Cultural and gender modesty norms as well as impostor syndrome can prevent anyone from acknowledging their remarkable attributes and expressing their achievements.

#IamRemarkable is a Google initiative empowering women and other underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. The program has two goals:

1. Improve the self-promotion motivation and skills of women and underrepresented groups
2. Challenge the social perception around self-promotion

Trained facilitators Liz Fujita and Gretchen Hein will lead this impactful workshop for a small group of students on Tuesday, October 25th at 6 PM in the MUB Superior Room. Participants are encouraged to register in advance on Involvement Link as space is limited.

Come join Students for Sustainability at our Fall Craft Night! We will be making glass jar lanterns and upcycled planters out of tin cans.  Please use the QR Code to let us know if you are coming. Bring any of your own craft materials and a good crafting spirit! 

Do you like to garden, forage for mushrooms, grow herbs on your patio, visit the farmers markets, or preserve foods? Are you a farmer, angler, hunter, or local foods advocate?

If so, we invite you to share your experiences and knowledge in a community photo project sharing stories about local foods in our area. Sign-up is open! We live in an area with a vibrant culture of hunting, foraging, fishing, gathering, and growing a diversity of foods. This project will celebrate these while informing next steps in new food systems initiatives, such as a pilot farm-to-school program. 

Participants will take part in several small-group meetings in Houghton/Hancock throughout Fall 2022 to share their local food photos and stories, with opportunities to share these in a collective program or exhibit if participants choose. No previous photography or writing experience is necessary.

This research project is part of a larger initiative led by Western UP Food Systems Collaborative partners and funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.

Mindful Yoga

Fresh Coast Yoga is visiting campus this week to provide students with a FREE hour of mindful yoga on Thursday, October 20th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The class will be held in the WADS Annex G11W. Mats and equipment are provided. Participation will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. 

Flu Shot Clinics

MTU is offering ongoing flu shot clinics during the month of October in partnership with UP Health Systems. The last clinic is scheduled for October 25th, from 11 AM – 2 PM. Flu shots are FREE to students provided that a student’s insurance covers the cost of the shot. Otherwise, flu shots are $40 per student, payable by cash, check, or credit card. There is no need to make an appointment as all clinics are walk-in friendly.

Beta Sigma Theta has recently partnered with the American Cancer Society to raise money and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. Through the month of September, they have been focused on their philanthropy event Red & Gold Together for Pediatric Cancer. This campaign has consisted of online fundraising initiatives, as well as, their all-day on-campus event. As well, through the month of September, they have been sharing the importance of fighting pediatric cancer through their social media with real-time statistics. Not only were they able to get the Houghton community and Michigan Tech involved, but they also raised over $1,700 for pediatric cancer research. Beta Sigma Theta’s campaign was the first time that the American Cancer Society reached the Upper Peninsula!

Registration for Fall Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) courses at MTU opens today.

This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to know to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. 

Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary. Minimum age of 20 years old. Individuals will be responsible for supplying their own ammunition (100 rounds). There will be a firearms proficiency test and a written test that students have to pass to complete the course. 

The cost is $150/person with their own equipment and $185/person with rental equipment (9mm pistol). 

Choose from two different course dates: October 29 or November 5. Each course runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is held at the SDC. Class size is limited.

Canterbury House Food Pantry is back for the school year! Let us help you alleviate the burden of purchasing food. We offer contactless and anonymous pick-up of groceries and toiletries to the Michigan Tech Community at The Canterbury House at 1405 E. Houghton Ave.

To place an order and select a pick-up time, fill out the Google Form at any time. Supplies may run out, but we will try our best to meet your needs. Feel free to stop inside and meet our students as well! Our house hours are 10 AM – 4 PM Monday-Thursday.

Keweenaw Pride is hosting six events to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride in the Keweenaw for the week of October 9th-15th! The events, culminating in the 23rd Annual Drag Show on Saturday, October 15th, are open and free for all students to attend. Details of each specific event are listed in the poster to the right.

Keweenaw Pride presents the 23rd Annual Drag Show, featuring six professional drag performers! It’s the most fun event of the year, and it’s happening for the 23rd year. Drag artists have been a source of joy for the LGBTQIA+ community, and this night will be no different. We have some fantastic talent coming to MTU, and we are expecting a night of absolute fun and incredible energy. Everyone is accepted and wanted, so come out and prepare to have a blast!

Tech students get in free with their Tech ID, non-MTU college students get in for $3, and the general public (including MTU faculty and staff) get in for $7. Tickets are available online at buyhuskiestickets.com and at the door.

Do you like to garden, forage for mushrooms, grow herbs on your patio, visit the farmers markets, or preserve foods? Are you a farmer, angler, hunter, or local foods advocate?

If so, we invite you to share your experiences and knowledge in a community photo project sharing stories about local foods in our area. Sign-up is open! We live in an area with a vibrant culture of hunting, foraging, fishing, gathering, and growing a diversity of foods. This project will celebrate these while informing next steps in new food systems initiatives, such as a pilot farm-to-school program. 

Participants will take part in several small-group meetings in Houghton/Hancock throughout Fall 2022 to share their local food photos and stories, with opportunities to share these in a collective program or exhibit if participants choose. No previous photography or writing experience is necessary.

This research project is part of a larger initiative led by Western UP Food Systems Collaborative partners and funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.

Registration for the second session of Fall Adult and Youth Tennis Programs will open soon! Classes begin the week of October 24 and run through mid-December (no classes Thanksgiving week).

SAVE is hosting this event in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in support of community organizations. Donation bins are located in the help desk area of the Van Pelt and Opie Library, in the front lobby of the Administration Building, in the front lobby area of the Memorial Union Building, and at the front entrance of the ROTC Building.

So You’ve Registered to Vote, Now What? Head to the Library for Help Researching Your Ballot

From confusing language in ballot proposals to finding out what various candidates believe and who supports them—making final decisions as you prepare to vote in the upcoming midterm elections can be more challenging than expected. Fortunately, the library can help!

Students for Sustainability are kicking off the fall season with our 2022 Clothing Swap! If you are looking for an excuse to clean out your closet before winter, now is the perfect opportunity. The Clothing Swap is a fantastic way to get rid of your unwanted clothes sustainably and get new clothes in an environmentally conscious way. The Clothing Swap is FREE through the use of donations. Please feel free to donate used clothing in the coming weeks at the provided bins in Wadsworth, DHH, McNair, the Library, and the MUB. Everyone is welcome to stop by the Library between 12-4pm on Thursday, October 13th to find some new free clothes!

Participating in the 3MT can be a way for you to develop important communication and research skills, and to participate in the building of research culture at Michigan Tech. Cash prizes are also available to the top competitors and the people’s choice. In addition, the winners of the local 3MT competition are given a chance to represent Michigan Tech at the next level of competition, and potentially even national and international 3MT competitions, which provides an excellent networking and professional development opportunity.

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion is planning the CDI Resource Tour for this coming semester. Join to be entered to win one of our weekly prizes, including gift cards, headphones, and even a tablet! The CDI Resource Tour is designed to introduce students that frequent or utilize CDI to other incredible units on campus that can aid in their retention and graduation. Our goal is to demystify and inform students about the amazing work being done in different departments and offices and how it can help them during their Tech journey.

We want our students to be more comfortable asking for help, and showing them where and who they can ask for their specific needs is one way we can do this. We will be having students meet at CDI and then we will walk them over to another office. This week we will visit the Center for Student Mental Health & Well-being and Equal Opportunity Compliance and Title XI.

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® is an annual event hosted by the Society of African American Men (SAAM) and Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE) to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and to raise awareness about gender-based violence. The event will take place on Wednesday, October, 5 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Registration will be held at the entrance of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts at noon. All donations will go to the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home.

The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra performs the Michigan premiere of Unquiet Earth by MIT composer, Elena Ruehr, a native of the U.P. This atmospheric work explores “the elements—Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Ether—with a sense of both hope and concern for the planet.” Also featured is William Herschel’s Symphony No. 20, an 18th century gem re-discovered and edited by Michigan Tech Physics professor, Bryan Suits. The program is bookended by the Blue Danube Waltzes and Romanian Rhapsody No. 1.
