The vacancy announcement for Civil Engineer (GS-0810-07 or 09) positions as part of the Professional Development Program (PDP) has been posted to USAJOBS! 

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is calling summer 2019 and recent graduates to come join the team! The PDP is a 24-month entry-level program that provides on-the-job training, developmental assignments, and a leadership skills academy. On-the-job training will be provided in one of FHWA Field Offices.

Scholarships: ASCE Michigan Section (Deadline: Memorial Day)

The Michigan Section of the ASCE encourages the advancement of the Civil Engineering profession by qualified and interested students. To that end, the ASCE Michigan Section offers financial support through two scholarships. These scholarships have been endowed through the efforts and generosity of individual Civil Engineers and leading Civil Engineering companies throughout Michigan. Applications are due by Memorial Day.
 
Mackinac Scholarship
Named in honor of Michigan’s #1 Civil Engineering Project of the 20th Century by the ASCE Michigan Section membership in December 1999, the Mackinac Scholarship is intended to recognize a premier Civil Engineering student from Michigan. The award will be presented annually, and will consist of a two-year grant of $5,000 each year (totaling $10,000 over a two-year period) to a student entering his or her junior year at an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program. The award considers merit, personal initiative, and financial need and encourages both participation in a student chapter of ASCE and contributions to the advancement of student engineering.
 
Zuidema Scholarship
Named in honor of an outstanding Past-President of the Michigan Section and the Western Michigan Branch of ASCE, the Marvin L. Zuidema Scholarship Award is presented annually to a student member of ASCE who has made a contribution to the advancement of student engineering activities. This award will consist of a one-time grant of $1,500, and considers academic performance as an indication of preparation for a future career in Civil Engineering. The Zuidema scholarship is available to either a junior or senior in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer, located in Crystal Falls, Michigan.

As a Transportation Engineer, oversee project construction, manage the TSC Local Agency construction program, complete transaction project designs as needed, prepare project programming documents, enter project data into Department’s databases, complete local agency project file reviews, track and administer the TSC warranty projects.  Act as a team leader and be recognized resource for technicians, interns, and engineers in highway design and construction.  Coordinate issues with the public and local agencies.  Assist the Construction Engineer and design in developing and delivering all aspects of the transportation product.

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

The candidate should be highly motivated, possess good communication skills, and feel comfortable as part of a project team. Job Postings: Michigan Works! helping fill jobs for construction on new Soo Locks

Michigan Works! is helping fill the many jobs available in the eastern U.P. to help build the new Soo Locks.

Corinna Peterson, the marketing and communications manager for MiWorks!, says they’re searching for hard workers who want to work and live in the Upper Peninsula. MiWorks! is even looking to recruit employees from out of state, as there are many jobs to fill. She says the hope is that people will want to stay in the U.P. and contribute to the economy.

There are openings for Safety & Occupational Health Specialists, Engineering Technicians (Civil), Construction Support Assistants, Construction Representatives, Civil Engineers, and Project Schedulers.

Peterson says these jobs are temporary, but will last for at least a couple of years.

Internships: Arenac County Road Commission

Arenac County Road Commission is looking for an engineering student to fill a summer seasonal or temporary summer job.

Job duties include working on Roadsoft computer software program doing culvert and sign inventory, and evaluations of roads along with traffic counts and studies.  Strong computer skills required and a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
