Internship: DOE Office of Science Undergrad Internships

DOE’s Office of Science Is Now Accepting Applications for Summer 2024 Undergraduate Internships

•            Applications are currently being accepted for the Summer 2024 term of two undergraduate internship programs offered by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science: the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program.

•            The application deadline is January 9, 2024.

•            Through SULI and CCI, undergraduate students and recent graduates discover science and technology careers at the DOE national laboratories and gain the experience needed to transition from intern to employment.

•            Interns work directly with national laboratory scientists and engineers, assisting them on research or technology projects that support the DOE mission.

•            SULI is open to full-time students attending 4-year institutions and community colleges or recent graduates within two years of receiving their bachelor’s degree or associate degree, while CCI is exclusively for community college students.

•            Both programs are stipend-based and offered three times annually in Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

Three workshops are planned to provide strategies for submitting a compliant application and learn about the internship experience from the voices of CCI and SULI alumni.

Two workshops will introduce the program and application process for each program followed by the final workshop which will review the application process for each program before highlighting the research opportunities and internship experience at the DOE National Labs through an alumni panel discussion.

•            November 1, 2023 from 2-3 ET for CCI, register: https://www.zoomgov.com/meeting/register/vJItdOGoqz8tGjStDK_odUHRGXCbQMObCKE#/registration

REU opportunity @ Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech is inviting applications for the NSF-funded REU site program – TECH SCEnE, this summer. TECH SCEnE is a unique bio-inspired, community-centric STEM program. The program is in collaboration with the Natural resources department at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC). Participants will work with mentors from Michigan Tech and KBIC. Projects offer opportunities for participants to enjoy the beautiful outdoors of the Upper Peninsula. Past projects include water quality testing for heavy metal contamination, smart adhesives for underwater applications, underwater acoustic modems for remote monitoring, simulating daylight for hatcheries, and applications of electrospun nanofibers.

More details about the program can be found on the website: TECH SCEnE REU

Diversity Internship Opportunities!

Environment for the Americas coordinates over 40 paid internship opportunities for diverse youth interested in careers in natural resources, environmental education, communications, history, and more with federal agencies across the country.

Mosaics in Science applications will be accepted through February 3rd, 2020, and LHIP through February 7th, 2020.

Please see attached flyers for more information.

Paid Summer Research Programs!

NSF REU program: UC San Diego Structural Engineering Department

Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 NSF Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program on “Designing for Safety and Safety by Design”. This eight-week summer program hosted at UC San Diego (La Jolla, CA) aims to immerse students in a highly interdisciplinary research environment in the field of engineered structures. Students will work in pairs and under the guidance of student and faculty mentors to tackle problems related to the design, analysis, modeling, monitoring, maintenance, and sustainment of aerospace, civil, marine, and mechanical structures. During their research tenure at UC San Diego, students will receive professional training, graduate school preparation, and engage in social activities. Students will receive a stipend of $4,000, and housing, meals, and round-trip travel will also be covered.

We encourage all eligible students (U.S. citizens and permanent resident undergraduate students at all stages with a GPA of >3.0) to apply before January 15, 2020. More information about the Program and how to apply can be found here: https://armor.eng.ucsd.edu/apply/reu

Summer Research: Los Alamos National Laboratory

Email from a current MTU student:
I participated in the Los Alamos Dynamics Summer School last summer and it was an absolutely fantastic experience; a world class lab with world class people. Please share with your students. If any of them have questions they can email me at hkdonajk@mtu.edu and I’d be happy to talk to them about the program.
