SYP Student Staff Applications Now Open for Summer 2026

The Center for Educational Outreach is excited to announce that counselor applications are now open for the 2026 season of Summer Youth Programs (SYP).

Each summer, SYP welcomes more than a thousand middle and high school students to campus for an unforgettable experience filled with hands-on learning, discovery and adventure. We’re looking for college students from Michigan Tech and beyond who are excited to help create a fun, welcoming, and meaningful environment for the thinkers, doers and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

A wide range of counselor and program support positions are available, including roles focused on youth engagement, residence life, evening programming, transportation and daily operations. Student staff members begin paid training in early June, and programs will run through July 18.

Internship: MLR Engineering (Civil Engineering & Consulting Services)

Title: Civil Engineering Intern
Classification: Summer 2025 (Early May until late August 2025)
Location: Main Office – Freeland, MI
Responsible to: Director of Engineering / Professional Engineer
Work Hours: Standard work hours are Monday through Friday 7 am – 5 pm (hours may vary based on need)

Compensation: Hourly with overtime pay. Hourly rate depends on candidates abilities.

Job Summary: MLR Engineering is looking for a summer intern to assist the Engineering Department in a full-time capacity position. The intern will be working closely with both the engineering staff and construction inspection field crews. The Intern will benefit from hands-on experience, technical
training, mentoring from a professional staff, and working within a positive team work environment.


Potential Functions of the Position may include: Assisting in Infrastructure asset determination, Field Surveying Municipal and Development style
projects, Construction Inspection of infrastructure style projects, assist in engineering study of watershed management projects.

Qualifications: Student should be enrolled in civil engineering or related field of study. Additionally, the intern should possess the following qualifications:
 Verbal and written communication skills
 Ability to apply technical skills to meet project demands
 Solve problems independently with some direction
 Work effectively in a team environment
 Positive attitude and good work ethic
 Self-motivated
 Attention to detail
 Demonstrates drive to achieve goals
 Basic capabilities with engineering type software

Job Posting: Environmental Engineer (EGLE)

The Air Quality Division (AQD) Permit Section conducts engineering review and evaluation of Air Use Permit to Install applications to determine compliance with state and federal requirements. This position is responsible for reviewing applications received and writing/drafting air use permits to install that involve a standard review including the following factors: minimal pollutants, less equipment, lower emissions, single-step engineer calculations, subject to less regulations and, when possible, involve low public controversy. This position completes a standard engineering review/evaluation of permit applications received by the Division and drafts/writes permits for issuance by the section manager. This position will also assist in the creation of public involvement materials focused on the permitting process, and procedures for updating and maintaining these documents. The position will also aid other Section staff in the development of public comment documents and public hearing presentations.
