The Michigan Tech Mechatronics program has been ranked No. 2 on a list of top mechatronics university programs in the United States. The list was published by knowinsiders.com. View the rankings list here.

“I got the news last night about the program being ranked No. 2 in the country,” says Mark Gauthier, president of Donald Engineering. “For being as young as the program is and the continued ongoing plans for expansion, I was completely blown away by the article.”

“This dream is one that started over 20 years ago,” Gauthier adds. “To see the efforts Alex Sergeyev and Michigan Tech have put into this is beyond my expectations and certainly wouldn’t have happened if Michigan Tech and Alex Sergeyev didn’t have the same passion as I do for Mechatronics.”

“I am so proud that I initiated the Mechatronics programs at Tech,” says Professor Sergeyev, director of the MTU Mechatronics degree program. “Donald Engineering and Mark Gauthier have been key to the success of the MTU Mechatronics degree program.”

“It is my honor to direct the Mechatronics program,” Sergeyev says. “I would like to acknowledge the support of Adrienne Minerick, the former Dean of the School of Technology and the founding Dean of the College of Computing, who positioned the Mechatronics program for success.” Minerick is now a professor in Michigan Tech’s Chemical Engineering department,

In addition, Sergeyev acknowledges the continued support of Dennis Livesay, the Dave House Dean of Computing, and Dan Fuhrmann, Department Chair, Applied Computing, who are working to ensure the growth and success of the Mechatronics program.

Michigan Tech is ranked more highly than Carnegie Mellon University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Purdue University, and other major U.S. schools. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked No. 1 on the list.

“Something tells me that by this time next year, MIT will be looking at our backs from afar,” Gauthier predicts.

Michigan Technological University is a mid-sized public university in Houghton, Michigan. It offers a bachelor’s and a master’s in mechatronics, several mechatronics certificate programs, and many other highly ranked degree programs.

Donald Engineering, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich., distributes and represents manufacturers of top-quality fluid power and motion control products and accessories.

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field that refers to the skill sets needed in the contemporary, advanced automated manufacturing industry. At the intersection of mechanics, electronics, and computing, mechatronics specialists create simpler, smarter systems.
