Ethics, Integrity, and Responsible Conduct of Research Workshop

The Office of Compliance, Integrity, and Safety at Michigan Tech will be conducting an ‘Ethics, Integrity, and Responsible Conduct of Research Workshop‘ on May 8th (Thursday) and 9th (Friday).  Attendance and passing (the exam) of this 2-day workshop will fulfill the University’s graduation requirement for Responsible Conduct of Research training.  Graduate students who have not completed course work fulfilling this requirement and who plan on graduating spring or summer semester are encouraged to attend.

There are different components to this workshop and the lectures will be conducted by experts in different fields.

It is a $25 registration-fee course and helps you complete the requirement of RCR advanced training in just 2 days.

Workshop learning objectives:

  • Understand importance of ethics and integrity in research and industrial work.
  • Understand the different aspects professionalism and how they apply to your work.
  • Understand the vital importance of conducting research responsibly and the impact this has on your career, your colleagues, and society.

Topics to be covered:

  • Introduction to the workshop
  • Ethics and integrity in research, academia, and industry
  • Copyright and Patent
  • Conflict of interest and Peer-review process
  • Social responsibilities and expectations
  • Professional training and professionalism (in general)

Elective (Choose any 1 of the 3 based on your major field of study)

  • Human and Animal subject research
  • Work place and environmental safety (general)
  • Biological safety and containment

Seating capacity: 50 (first come first serve basis)

Days: May 8th 3.00- 6.15pm and May 9th 4.00- 6.00 pm

Workshop requirement:

  1. ATTENDANCE is mandatory on both days to receive credit for the workshop (sign-up sheets will be available at the workshop and attendance will be taken after each session).  Prior arrangements must be made and approved if you cannot attend both days.
  2. To meet the University’s graduation requirement, you will have to take the multiple-choice exam and score at least 80 out of 100 within one-week of the workshop (by May 16th) at the teaching and learning center.  Details will be provided on the last day of the workshop (May 9th , Friday)
  3. All the reading materials and presentation slides relevant to multiple-choice exam will be posted on-line on canvas by May 10th (Saturday) noon.
  4. Exams will made available to the teaching and learning center by May 12th (Monday).  If you can take the workshop but cannot take the exam due to conflict in your schedule with your CO-OP/ CPT/ Internship, we will try to accommodate you.  For that please contact me directly..
