| The Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) is inviting applications for 2010-11. The application and review processes are online at www.umich.edu/~msgc .
Funding is available for the following: * Fellowship Program Michigan Tech’s MSGC liaison is Chris Anderson, special assistant to the president for Institutional Diversity. Applications are due to Institutional Diversity no later than 3:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16. The process for submission is as follows: 1) Create a budget be contacting Kellie Buss at Research and Sponsored Programs at 487-2226 or by email at kellie@mtu.edu . 2) Complete online forms at www.umich.edu/~msgc (but do not submit until after step 4). 3) Complete transmittal form by clicking here . 4) Print the materials and bring them to Institutional Diversity, which will provide a letter of approval to submit. Step 4 needs to be completed during the week of Nov. 16. |
Items that are time sensitive and require action
The SMART scholarship Program is a highly-selective, prestigious, national program that fully supports graduate and undergraduate education. Michigan Tech is recognized as one of the top schools in terms of SMART recipients. Our goal, in collaboration with the Department of Defense is to “greatly increase” the number of Michigan Tech SMART recipients.
The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship-for-service Program fully funds graduate degrees in a wide range of technical areas, including all fields of engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and Mathematics. Recipients receive:
- Full tuition to any accredited U.S. University
- A very generous stipend
- $36, 000 for masters candiates
- 38,000- $41,000 for doctoral candidates
- $1000 Book allowance
- Health Insurance
- All required student fees
- Travel fees for internships

The Graduate School is now accepting nominations for the spring 2010 Finishing Fellowship competition. Complete applications are due to the Graduate School no later than 4pm on October 29, 2009.

Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:
- Must be a PhD student.
- Must expect to finish during the semester supported as a finishing fellow.
- Must have submitted a Petition to Enter Full-Time Research Only Mode. No Finishing Fellowships will be awarded to students who fail to receive approval of their petition.

There will be several upcoming flu vaccine clinics available through Michigan Tech Counseling and Wellness Services and Portage Health.
The influenza vaccine (flu shot) is recommended for everyone, but especially for people living in close quarters, such as residence halls, and for people who have chronic health issues such as asthma and diabetes. The flu shot may not be given to people who have a severe allergy to eggs, as eggs are used in the manufacture of the vaccine.

To celebrate its many research, education and outreach accomplishments toward securing a more sustainable future, the Sustainable Futures Institute (SFI) will host the fifth annual SFI poster session and banquet it the Rozsa lobby on Friday, Oct. 16. The banquet keynote speaker will be Charles Kerfoot, professor of Biological Sciences, who will talk about Michigan Tech’s new Great Lakes Research Center. New scholars of SFI will also be inducted at this time.
New awards will be offered! This year there are even more reasons than ever to submit a poster. In addition to an award of $150 from the Graduate Student Council for the People’s Choice Award for Best Poster, SFI will award a second and third prize of $75 and $50, respectively. Also new this year is the Rick Donovan SFI Operations Manager Inaugural Award for $200. Donovan reserves the right to decide his criteria and announce the award on the spot.
To register for the poster session, email your 100-word abstract by Oct. 9 to Denise Heikinen and RSVP to Heikinen if you plan to attend the banquet.

Submit the Commencement application form to the Graduate School no later than October 16, 2009.
Order your academic garb no later than October 23, 2009. Academic garb is required to participate in commencement. Any order received after Oct. 23 will be assessed a shipping fee of $10, and orders received after Nov. 8, $25. After Nov. 22, cap and gown rental cannot be guaranteed.

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship ( DOE SCGF) program to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S.
The Fellowship award provides partial tuition support, an annual stipend for living expenses, and a research stipend for full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research at a U.S. academic institution for three years.
The application deadline is November 30th.

The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development is conducting a workshop on helping students win national scholarships. The session will be from noon to 12:55 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24.
Lunch will be provided to those who register by Monday, Sept. 21.
The location of the session will be announced as people sign up.
Faculty members are encouraged to attend because they play a critical role in encouraging students to pursue these life-changing opportunities.
Presenting the seminar will be Mary Durfee, advisor for nationally competitive scholarships, and Jodi Lehman, advisor for NSF graduate fellowships.
Faculty will gain information they need to identify and effectively support their top candidates for a major fellowship opportunity.

The Executive Committee of the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) is soliciting nominations for the 2010 MAGS Distinguished Master’s Thesis Awards to recognize and reward distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level. Michigan Tech may nominate one candidate.
Eligible students will have earned a master of science degree between October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009.

The Van Pelt and Opie Libary will offer a free workshop for electronic information resources from 12 to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the library instruction room (244).
Don Sechler, manager of customer education for Thomson Reuters, will cover basic and advanced functionality of the “Web of Science” information resource tool. The session will include information about end-user tools, such as personalization, alerting, ResearcherID and using EndNote Web to store references and track citation activity. The workshop will include live demos of the products and time for questions from participants.
Web of Science provides access to some of the world’s leading scholarly literature in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, including proceedings of international conferences, symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops and conventions. Web of Science comprises several key electronic tools, including Science Citation Index Expanded (1973-present), Social Sciences Citation Index (1973-present) and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1975-present).
Although time will be limited, the session will also touch on shared searching and citation aspects with the Medline life sciences database and Inspec, an index to journal and proceedings literature in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, computing, control engineering and information technology. Medline and Inspec are part of the larger Web of Knowledge resource package available from Thomson Reuters through the library.
