As a candidate for Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Jacqueline Huntoon will be conducting the following events open to the University community; all are welcome to participate in any event, regardless of their intended focus audience:

Open forum (students): Tomorrow from 1 to 2 p.m., Dow 641

Discussion with women at Michigan Tech: Tomorrow, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., East Reading Room of the Library

Please take part in as many of the activities with each candidate as possible, and provide your input to the search committee through the website.

The candidates for provost will each be presenting two open forums, one intended primarily for faculty and staff and one intended for students, although anyone can attend either.  A website http://www.mtu.edu/provostsearch/ is kept updated and provides links to surveys for your comments.  We encourage you to become familiar with the candidates and let us know your thoughts.

Graduate School Dean Appointed to Michigan Science Teachers Association Board

Jacqueline Huntoon, dean of the Graduate School, has been appointed to the board of the Michigan Science Teachers Association (MSTA). She will represent Region 12, which includes Houghton, Baraga, Gogebic, Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties.

The MSTA works to support and provide leadership for improvement of science education across Michigan. The organization advocates at local, state and national levels to give science teachers a voice in determining the course of science education.

Alex Bales (Bio Sci, Advisor: Erika Hersch-Green) for the poster “The Role of Genome Duplication (Polyploidy) in Response of Plants to Changes in Soil Nitrogen Availability and Subsequent Insect Herbivory”

The Two Merit Prize winners of the Graduate Divisions were:
Alida Mau (SFRES, Advisor: Molly Cavaleri) for the poster “Photosynthetic Temperature Responses Within Temperate and Tropical Forests”

Mickey Jarvi (SFRES, Advisor: Andy Burton) for the poster “Below-ground C Allocation Responses to Climatic Variation across Sugar Maple’s Native Range”

EPA Research Triangle Park – Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

Qualifications include: A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, computer science/engineering, bioinformatics, biology, statistics, computational biology, math, physics, information sciences, or a related discipline. Necessary skills include education and experience in database concepts and programming, leadership skills, strong written, oral and electronic communication skills, and the ability to work with a team. It is also preferable if the applicant has an advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Applications and desktop publishing, and experience with Linux operating systems, basic software development, and database development.

Summer Data Science Fellowship Opportunity

Program: The Data Incubator is an intensive 7 week fellowship that prepares masters, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM + social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for fellows and supported by sponsorships from dozens of employers across multiple industries.

Locations: There will be both an in-person (in NYC, DC, SF) and online section of the fellowship. There is a common application for both the online and in-person sections.

Dates: All sections will be from 2015-06-01 to 2015-07-17

Formatting help available for dissertations, theses, and reports

Are you working on formatting corrections for your dissertation, thesis, or report?  Do you need help?

Join Harriet King, coordinator of the Graduate School Communications Assistance Program for group work hours in the Library. These workshops are provided at no charge to students working on a dissertation, thesis, or report. Harriet is skilled with MS Office, Open Office, and Adobe Acrobat Pro, and can provide group tutoring and assistance during these open times – all sessions will be held in Library 242:
