Deisenroth Receives NSF Fellowship

David Deisenroth, a graduate student pursuing an MS in Mechanical Engineering, has received an National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute Fellowship to travel to Korea this summer to conduct research.

Deisenroth will conduct an in-depth study on the collision of a falling drop of water and a resting drop of water. He will film the drops at high speeds and observe their characteristics. The results can be used to further the understanding of thermal management systems, aerosols and fuel injection.

An EAPSI award provides science, engineering and education research experiences in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan; an introduction to the science, science policy and scientific infrastructure of the respective location; and an orientation to the society, culture, and language. EAPSI awards help students initiate professional relationships to enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts.

Deisenroth’s award includes a stipend of $5,000 and travel expenses. His advisor is Jeff Allen, the John and Joan Calder Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics.

Alumna named American Geosciences Institute/Schlumberger Geoscience Communication Fellow

Stephanie Tubman, an alumna of the Peace Corps Master’s International (PCMI) program, has been named American Geosciences Institute/Schlumberger Geoscience Communication Fellow. Tubman will be working with AGI’s Critical Issues Program to disseminate geoscience information to help support decision-making at the federal, state and municipal levels.

Following her undergraduate degree at Colgate University, she completed an internship at the US Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory and enrolled in the PCMI program in geohazards mitigation.

During her two-year tour in Guatemala with the Peace Corps, she was assigned to a municipal environmental office, collaborating with local officials on water management, environmental science education and ecotourism projects.

The purpose of the King-Chávez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship Program is to increase the pool of traditionally underrepresented candidates pursuing careers in postsecondary education. Nominations may be at the master’s or doctoral level. Please see our web site for more details on the program, eligibility requirements, and the application procedure.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, however, for the best consideration for funding beginning in fall 2014, please submit a nomination no later than 4pm, March 17, 2014.

The Graduate School will work with qualified applicants and their programs to develop a funding plan that includes funds from the KCP program, department or school, and Graduate School.

Scholarship Opportunity for Junior and Senior Engineering Students and Prospective Engineering Graduate Students

The Michigan Tech SSEED program (funded by NSF S-STEM) will award 35 undergraduate scholarships of $1,000-$5,000 to junior and senior engineering students and five graduate fellowships of $8,000 to engineering students in 2014-15. Please share this information with qualified students.

The purpose of the undergraduate scholarships is to improve the retention of upper-division engineering students who have financial need and other risk factors that make it difficult to complete their undergraduate degree. The purpose of the graduate fellowships is to improve the recruitment of women and minorities to graduate school in engineering. The Office of International Climate Change Policy and Technology within the Office of International Affairs (IA) is now accepting applications for talented, committed fellows to support efforts related to the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), which is a high-level forum to promote policies and programs that advance clean energy technology, to share lessons learned and best practices, and to encourage the transition to a global clean energy economy.

Application deadline: Wednesday January 15, 2014

Eligibility:

Applicants must have received an undergraduate (BS/BA) or graduate (MS/MA or PhD) degree from an accredited institution within the past five years.
Must be a U.S. citizen to apply.
Must be available for full-time commitment for one-year appointment in Washington, D.C., starting in February/March 2014; appointments may be renewed for a second year.

Stipends range from $60,000 to $90,000 depending on academic level, skills, and experience. Additional allowances for medical insurance or transportation may be provided.

Participating governments include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The Fellowship position would involve frequent interactions with international counterparts and some international travel.

2014 Nominations open for The DeVlieg Foundation Fellowships

Nominations are now open for the DeVlieg Foundation Fellowships.

All graduate programs may nominate one eligible PhD student per program. There will be two recipients – each will receive a stipend for summer 2014 plus support for one credit of tuition. Eligible students will meet all of the following criteria:

Must be a graduate student in one of the fields supported by the DeVlieg Foundation:
1. Engineering or a closely related field, OR
2. Wildlife/biology (2014 Summer Research Award in Biology/Wildlife/Natural Resources)
Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Must be enrolled in a PhD program.
Must be nominated by student’s graduate program. Each PhD program may nominate one student.

Nominations are due no later than 4pm on January 29, 2014 to the Graduate School. Please address to the attention of Debra Charlesworth.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship program

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

Eligibility:

Open to all active Phi Kappa Phi members or those who have:

accepted membership by June 30, 2014
applied to enroll as a full-time student in a post-baccalaureate program of study during the coming academic year

Please note: Students registering in all professional and graduate fields are eligible.

Applicants who have successfully earned 10+ credit hours of graduate study or its equivalent on or before April 15 are not eligible.

NRC announces Associateship Programs for 2014

The National Research Council (NRC) administers competitive graduate postdoctoral and senior research awards on behalf of 26 U.S. government research agencies and affiliated institutions with facilities at over 100 locations throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Annual stipends for recent PhD recipients for the 2014 program year range from $42,000 to $80,000 depending upon the sponsoring laboratory, and are appropriately higher for senior award recipients. Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000 and are higher for additional experience.
