Priyanka Kadav represents Michigan Tech in regional 3MT competition

Priyanka Kadav recently represented Michigan Tech in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) annual meeting. The MAGS meeting was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from April 6-8, 2022. Priyanka is a PhD candidate in Chemistry advised by Dr. Tarun Dam.

Prior to representing Michigan Tech at MAGS, she earned the top prize at Michigan Tech’s 3MT competition. The Graduate Student Government sponsors a local 3MT competition each fall. Each university in our region was invited to send one representative to the MAGS annual meeting.

Her presentation was titled, “Capture and Release (CaRe): A novel protein purification technique.” The Graduate School is proud of her accomplishments and how well she represented Michigan Tech!

GSG and the CTL to Host Teaching Seminar for GTAs and GTIs

The Graduate Student Government (GSG), in collaboration with the William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning, is hosting a seminar for GTAs and GTIs who will be teaching in the Fall 2020 semester.

This virtual event will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 20). Topics such as teaching resources, safety, student engagement and classroom policies will be discussed, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Mike Meyer from the CTL will lead the session. Please feel free to submit any questions you may have in advance on this document. We hope to see you there.

GSG Professional Development Workshop – Publishing Your Research

Join the Graduate Student Government for a professional development workshop designed to prepare you to navigate the publication process from 4 to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 20) in Admin 404. Many graduate students are unaware of the issues, complications, and amount of time involved in the publication process until they actually begin to prepare or submit a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

GSG is continuing its 2019 professional development series with a professional development workshop entitled “Publishing Your Research.” This workshop will consist of an informal panel discussion with on-campus journal contributors and reviewers. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain useful tips and advice regarding manuscript preparation and submission, publication timelines, and addressing reviewer comments.

This event is open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Refreshments provided. Space is limited so be sure to register here for the event.

Three Minute Thesis

GSG is pleased to announce that registration for this years Three Minute Thesis competition is currently open. This year’s competition is on Wednesday, November 6th. This competition offers a great opportunity for graduate students across the university to present their research to a general audience. This contest is open to all grad students – PhD/MS (thesis, report, or coursework.)

Registration closes October 23rd, at 11:59 PM.

Preliminary rounds: MUB Ballroom, 12-4 PM

Final round: Continental Fire Co, 6-8 PM.

Three Minute Thesis Winners

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, held on Oct. 12, featured 10 speakers from departments across the University.  The competition encourages graduate students to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

Six of the students who participated advanced from the preliminary heats to compete in the finals. The winner of the competition, who will advance to the Midwestern Association of Graduate School’s 3MT Competition in April, was Divya Kamath’s presentation on improving water quality with aquesous phase advanced oxidation processes. Muraleekrishnan Menon’s presentation on improving wind turbine rotors using active flow-control devices took second. The audience selected Leigh Miller’s presentation on the protection of clean water in Panama as their favorite for the People’s Choice Award.

Graduate Student Government Travel Grant Deadline

There is still time to apply for the Fall 2014 Graduate Student Government Travel Grants. Travel grants t help subsidize the cost of attending and presenting at conferences. These awards are sponsored by GSG and the Graduate School. For more information, visit the Travel Grants web page.

Applications must be completed before 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10. As part of the application, advisors are sent an email to verify eligibility and approval for student conference attendance. A response to this email is necessary for the application to be considered complete.
