Kilgas and Phillips Receive Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Award

Please join me in congratulating doctoral students Matthew Kilgas and Kevin Phillips as both received $3,000 awards for their research through the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation (BCBSM) Student Award Program. Briefly, this foundation is dedicated to improving the health of Michigan residents and supports student research projects across a wide range of human health topics. We wish Matt and Kevin the best of luck with their respective projects and strongly encourage other graduate students to apply in the future.

KIP Students in the News

Faculty work closely with students in their labs to educate and provide hands on experiences related to research.  Students use those valuable experiences in many ways that often leads to recognition.  Here are a few of our most recent successes.

Portage Health Foundation Graduate Fellowship
Robert Larson, PhD student working in Dr. Chen’s lab, was recently awarded the Portage Health Foundation Graduate Fellowship Award.  Congrats Robert for your continued successes in research, publications and overall contribution to the KIP department and Michigan Tech.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
Dakota Anderson, Biomedical Engineering, recently received a Summer Research Fellowship.  Dakota’s advisor is Dr. Elmer.  Congrats Dakota and we wish you the best of luck conducting your research this summer.

Undergraduate Research Expo
A number of our faculty had students presenting their work as part of the 2016 Undergraduate Research Expo last week.

Undergraduate Expo 2016-2

Claire Eischer, Exercise Science – Dr. Tejin Yoon (Human Neurmechanics-nLab)

Olivia Ingram, Biological Sciences – Dr. Kevin Trewartha (Aging, Cognition & Action)

Tessa Sprague, Exercise Science – Dr. Kevin Trewartha (Aging, Cognition &  Action)

Ashley VanSumeren, Biological Sciences & Exercise Science – Dr. Steven Elmer (Exercise Physiology)

Undergraduate Expo 2016-3Dr. Trewarth’s student, Olivia Ingram, placed 3rd for her presentation on  “The Role of Implicit Memory Precesses in Age-Related Declines in Motor Learning.”  She was also one of three students recognized by expo visitors with the Audience Choice Award.

Preview Day 2016

The KIP department will be at Preview Day this Saturday, March 19 from 11:00 am – 1:30, in the Memorial Union Building. We welcome all new students coming to Michigan Tech to stop by and see what we’re all about! We’ll have students from our sports & fitness management & exercise science programs along with students in their second year of CMU’s doctorate of physical therapy program available to answer questions and offer hands on demonstrations.

*Department tours also available from 2:30 – 3:15 p.m., interested participants should meet at the KIP offices located on the 2nd floor of the SDC. Graduate student Matt Gage will lead a tour through some of our KIP labs and talk about research being conducted.

More information and schedule of events can be found here.

Fall 2015 KIP Graduates

Congratulations to all of our graduates from Fall 2015!  In addition to the students that earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and Sports and Fitness Management we also graduated our first two students to earn a Master of Science in Kinesiology, Austin Armga and Tyler Shelast.

KIP students now have the opportunity to earn a BS in exercise science or sports and fitness management along with a MS in kinesiology in five years by participating in our accelerated master’s program.  Learn more the Kinesology Accelerated Master’s (BS-MS).

Best of wishes to all our graduates in their next journey!

Students of Kinesiology, Kurt Kitti

Image

Meet current Sports and Fitness Management (SSFM) student, Kurt Kitti. Kurt is a non-traditional student coming back to school after living a life full of adventure. He is married with six children and has held many different positions in both private and government sectors, including 21 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and nine years as an Army Civilian and private consultant. Kurt holds multiple degrees, including two MS degrees.

Why come back to school? Why SSFM? Kurt responded, “I’ve always loved sports and exercise.” Since it has been awhile, he had some initial reservations about coming back and his ability to remember lots of technical material and details required to be a successful student. What he is finding is that the life experiences and skills developed over the years have prepared him well for this new challenge. He also commented that the program course progression quickly ties together what you are learning in the different classes. He is still exploring options for after graduation but would like to help people learn ways to develop and maintain their personal health and wellness throughout their lifetime.

Like Kurt, many people might have reservations about coming back to school as an adult. He’s proving that no matter your age or circumstance it is possible. He offered this suggestion, “Don’t set self-imposed limits.”

As a veteran, we salute you this Veteran’s Day, Kurt! Thank you for your service to this country and your determination to never say never to learning. We wish you continued success on your life’s journey and your time with us at Michigan Tech.
