Voting On Election Day

If you are planning on voting on Election Day, November 5th, you will need to find your polling place and polling hours. Your polling place is based on your residential address and assigned by your state or local election office. This location cannot be changed unless you update your residential address on your voter registration. You can find your polling place and its hours, by checking your voter registration or by contacting your state or territorial election office.

If you have a disability, you have the right to vote at an accessible polling place, but you may have to request it beforehand. Contact your state or election office to learn more about accommodations for voters with disabilities.

Whether you vote during Election Day or Huskies Vote Early Day, don’t miss the chance to make your voice heard during this election! Your vote matters!

Need A Ride To Your Polling Place?

Using the code “CAMPUSPARTNER” you can receive a free Lyft ride up to $20 to your early voting or Election Day polling place. This code can only be used once per student and is valid from now through Election Day (11/5/24).

The Open-Source Model of America: Protecting Free Speech in a Connected World

The Student Affairs CommUNITY Education Team and the Bridging Community Series is pleased to announce a campus presentation by Michigan Attorney and a member of the board of directors of the ACLU of Michigan, Michael Naughton. Mr. Naughton is an experienced attorney with over 20 years of practice in the field of civil rights, technology law, criminal defense, and digital privacy. With the arrival of the fourth industrial revolution, Michael has become increasingly engaged in the specialty of emerging technologies and civil liberties. Recently, he was appointed to serve on the Michigan Judicial Council for Generative AI and the Courts Work Group.

Early Voting in Michigan Starts this Saturday!

Early voting starts in Michigan this Saturday, October 26th. If you plan to vote in Michigan, you can cast your ballot in person at an early voting site before Election Day (November 5) now through Sunday, November 3rd. At early voting sites, you will receive a ballot and can insert it into a tabulator, similar to how you would vote on Election Day.

Where Can I Vote Early In Michigan?

Early voting sites are similar to Election Day polling places, however, they can be set up to serve voters from multiple cities or townships. This means that your site may be different than your normal polling location. To find your early voting site, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center and click on “your voter information”. You can then find information about early voting based on your home address. If you are voting in Houghton County, your early voting site is the Houghton City Center (616 Shelden Avenue).

Need a ride to the polls? The Voter Engagement Coalition is hosting Huskies Vote Early Day on Sunday, November 3rd from 1-3 PM between DHH and CDI. Students can catch a shuttle to City Center, celebrate engaging with the democratic process, and pick up an “I voted” sticker – especially for those who may have voted absentee and not received one!  Join us for music, games, snacks, and more to celebrate!

Make A Difference Day 2024

Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others—a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. This annual tradition at Michigan Tech started as a student’s LeaderShape vision in the fall of 2004 and has continued to be our largest day of service each year.

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to register as volunteers for Make a Difference Day. Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt for participating. Start talking about participating in Make a Difference Day with your organization today!

Volunteer registration will close on Sunday, October 20th, 2024.

Check out our website to learn more about Make A Difference Day and what to expect as a volunteer!

Don’t Miss the Deadline: Register to Vote Now!

In Michigan, the last day to register to vote online or by mail is Monday, October 21 (15 days before the November 5th General Election). This means there is still time to register from campus for another precinct in Michigan! If you are not a Michigan resident, check out the voter registration deadlines by state.

Minnesota’s online or by-mail registration deadline has passed, but you can still register in person. Are you traveling for Fall Break? Stop by your clerk’s office to register!

Not Registered Yet?

To be eligible to vote you must be 18, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of the state where you register. Some other criteria may apply by state. Before registering to vote, you should check your status in that state, then, if needed, you can go through the registration process. Be sure to do so before your state’s deadline!

Check your voter registration status for:

Michigan Wisconsin Illinois Other States

Register to vote in:

Michigan Wisconsin Illinois Other States

Not sure where to register?

If you live in the local area while you attend Michigan Tech, you can register to vote here (at your on-campus or off-campus address) instead of at your permanent address, even if your previous address is out-of-state. It’s up to you. The key is entering the address where you wish to vote on the registration form. You can only vote in one place! Registering at a new address cancels any prior registrations at an old address. In the State of Michigan, the address on your driver’s license must match where you register to vote – if you change one you must change the other. With expanded options for voting early or absentee, you don’t have to be in your voting district on election day to vote.

Still Trying to Figure Out Who to Vote For? Start Researching Now!

The upcoming presidential election may receive the most attention, but many more candidates and issues are on the ballot during the 2024 General Election. Since these elections receive less coverage, it can be challenging to learn about the candidates running for state or local positions. Don’t let this hinder you from casting your ballot!

But Why Should I Even Vote?

In the last presidential election, our institutional voting rate was 56.8%, nearly 10% lower than the average for other institutions. Part of the reason is that STEM majors are traditionally less likely to vote. Not sure how or why you should care as a STEM student? Check out the Science and Civics Guide published by the Students Learn, Students Vote Coalition.

Who’s On Your Ballot

The first step in becoming an informed voter is finding out who’s on your ballot. Use the links below to generate your sample ballot and understand the scope of candidates up for election this November.

General (Any State)MichiganWisconsinIllinoisMinnesota

Learn About the Candidates

Once you figure out who’s on your ballot, you can begin researching the actual candidates. We recommend non-partisan resources to get you started. Check out:

  • Vote411 – “Voters deserve to hear directly from all candidates running for office in their communities. Every election, the League of Women Voters produces nonpartisan voter guides designed to help voters understand where candidates stand on the issues voters care most about. To make our guides, we ask candidates about voters’ most pressing questions and share their answers word for word. These guides empower voters with the information they need to choose who will best represent them.”
  • Ballotpedia – “Ballotpedia is the digital encyclopedia of American politics, and the nation’s premier resource for unbiased information on elections, politics, and policy. We provide our readers curated content on all levels of U.S. politics that is relevant, reliable, and available for all. In addition, Ballotpedia’s policy content and assets are a gateway to learning about public policy and an unparalleled resource for clear, comprehensive, and factual information on key policy areas. We are firmly committed to neutrality in all our content.”
  • VoteSmart – “Unlike other groups, Vote Smart is completely unbiased. No endorsements. No political advocacy or lobbying for a cause. Our sole mission is to provide free, factual, unbiased information to Americans every day of every year. Our pledge to you is that we check our politics at the door every day we come into work. We couldn’t ask for your trust any other way.”
