Please come cheer on Michigan Tech Woman’s Basketball:

Michigan Tech was awarded the top seed and host site for the 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Midwest Regional as the NCAA announced the 64-team field for the tournament. Seven teams from around the region will descend upon Houghton for the regional which will be played March 11-14.

The schedule of games is as follows (all times Eastern):

All games will be played at the Student Development Complex Gymnasium on Michigan Tech’s campus. Tickets for the event will go on sale Tuesday (Mar. 8), at 8 a.m. Michigan Tech season ticket holders and sponsors will have until 9 p.m. Wednesday (Mar. 9) to reserve their same seats. Prices for adults are $12 for reserved seats and $10 for general admission. Children age 3-18 are $5. College students are $3.

FREE SWING CLASS:  The Swing Club is offering a FREE six-week course in beginning swing dance.  Classes will be held on Saturdays at 7:00 pm in Wads G17/G19 beginning March 19.  No experience or partner required.  We will cover basic triple-step east coast swing, swing fundamentals and partner connection, open and closed position swing, variations on the basic step pattern, styling and musicality and lots of other snazzy moves!  Open dance at 8:00 pm.   To guarantee a spot in the class, sign up in advance by emailing swing@mtu.edu, or just show up!

FREE LINDY HOP CLASS:  The Swing Club is offering a FREE class in Lindy Hop and Charleston on Thursdays at 8:00 pm beginning March 17.  The class will run for six weeks and will be in Wads G17/G19.  You MUST have experience in triple-step east coast swing in order to take this class.  Email swing@mtu.edu for more information or to sign up in advance.  Walk-ins welcome, but doesn’t guarantee a spot in the class!

INPUT NEEDED FOR DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARDS:  The Center for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development seeks input for its annual Distinguished Teaching Awards, which recognize outstanding contribution to the instructional mission of the university.  Based on over 51,000 student ratings of instruction forms, eleven finalists have been identified for the 2011 awards.  The selection committee is soliciting comments from students, staff, faculty, and alumni to aid in its deliberation process.  Here are the finalists for the two awards:

MEXICAN DINNER AND DESSERT FUNDRAISER:  There will be a Mexican dinner and dessert fundraiser to benefit victims of the recent volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi near Jogyakarta in Indonesia.  The event will be held Saturday, February 19 beginning at 6:00 pm at the Grace United Methodist Church in Houghton.  A donation of $20.00 per meal is requested.  Seating is limited so it is recommended that you purchase tickets in advance from any Rotaract member, or by contacting Mari Buche, Rotaract Club advisor, at mwbuche@mtu.edu.

MOTOWN NIGHT:  Motown Night will be celebrated on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 8:00 pm in the DHH Ballroom.  The event is free and open to everyone, and light refreshments will be provided.  Motown played an important role in the racial integration of popular music, as it was the first record label owned by an African American to primarily feature African-American artists who achieved crossover success.  The night will be filled with music from that era, and there will be trivia and prizes associated with Motown and its history.   Have your photo taken in front of a backdrop to capture the excitement of the event!

KSO PERFORMANCE:  The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra concludes its 40th anniversary season with an electrifying concert of American and Russian classics. Come to the Rozsa Center this Saturday, February 19 at 7:30 pm to hear Aaron Copland’s inspiring ‘Appalachian Spring Suite,’ the first great Americana orchestral work, written during WWII.  The performance ends with Tchaikovsky’s fiery Violin Concerto, played by world-class Ukrainian violinist, Solomiya Ivakhiv.

TECH THEATRE COMPANY PERFORMS TWO ROOMS:  Two Rooms is being performed by The Tech Theatre Company in the McArdle Theatre Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this weekend, February 17-19, and and again next weekend, February 24-26, 2011.  All shows begin at 7:30 pm.  Lee Blessing’s Two Rooms is a play about terrorism, the media, and above all, devotion.  Two of Michigan Tech’s Visual and Performing Arts students play the lead roles: Tobias Mahan plays Michael, and Laine will be performed by Dani Sweet.

ROAD TRIP ACROSS AFRICA PERFORMANCE AND FOOD:  African Night 2011: Road Trip Across Africa will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011.  Dinner will begin at 5:00 PM in the Memorial Union Board (MUB) Commons, and the performance will be at 7:30PM at the Rozsa Center for Performing Arts.  The cost for the general public is $15.00; for Michigan Tech students is $10.00, and children under 5 are free.  The cost includes both the dinner and performance.

During this event, students from various African countries provide the audience with an exhilarating display of some of the dance routines from their countries. Food prepared using recipes from certain African countries is also served before the main event. The road-trip themed performance by the students will bring to stage the cultural heritage of the various African countries represented on Michigan Tech’s campus in a night of enlightening entertainment. This year’s special guest performers are the Adinkra Music and Dance Ensemble, who trace their roots to Ghana. This event has grown consistently over the years. African Night attracts an audience of over 300 people every year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE NEXT SATURDAY:  Community Service Snowday!   Help the elderly in your local community by helping them shovel areas that they might not be strong enough to shovel themselves.  In addition, we will be shoveling out fire hydrants so that our volunteer firefighters can access water in case of an emergency.   Meet at the MUB bus entrance or inside near the Peninsula Room at 9:00 am next Satuday, February 26.  Bring your own shovel!   We will have maps of locations on & off campus to divide & conquer!  Please email communityservice@mtu.edu and sign up if you are able to join us.

SALT LAKE UTAH ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK:  The Outdoor Adventure Program will be hosting a ski/snowboard trip to the Salt Lake City area from March 6-11.  The cost to you, not including the cost of your flight, is $500.  The trip will provide 4 ski passes that are interchangeable at Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton, and Alta.  Five nights of lodging will be at the Crystal Inn in Murray, Utah which provides both breakfast and dinner to its guests. CALENDAR GIRLS AT CLUB INDIGO:  Mu Beta Psi music fraternity announces the February Club Indigo.  CALENDAR GIRLS on February 11th features Helen Mirren in a comedy about women in a British club who plan daringly to make money for charity by posing in the nude.  Keweenaw Co-op chefs plan a multi-tabled British buffet at 6pm, followed at 7:15pm by the movie. The cost for the buffet and movie is $18, or $5 for the movie alone.  The movie is dedicated to the Red Had Ladies of the Copper Country.  Women are encouraged (but not required) to wear red hats and join in on the fun.  For the buffet, call the Calumet Theatre in advance for seating: 337-2610.

ORDER YOUR CRUSH:  “I’ve Got A Crush On You” is a Valentine’s Day philanthropy event sponsored by Alpha Sigma Tau to raise money for the Pine Mountain Settlement School.  Show that special someone how you feel with a delicious can of CRUSH!   Orders will be taken February 7-9 in the Fisher lobby from 9am to 3pm, and in the DOW lobby from 11am to 3pm.  The cost of the CRUSH is $1.00 per can; or $1.50 per can including delivery (delivery limited to residence halls and Greek houses).  Delivery dates are Feb 13 and 14.

OOZEBALL T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST:  The Michigan Tech Student Foundation is sponsoring an oozeball t-shirt design contest!  Students must submit their designs to the MTSF Office on the 2nd floor of the Alumni House by February 28.  T-shirt designs must have included in them “Oozeball 2011” and the MTSF name.  If you need any more information, please email Ashley Wood at anwood@mtu.edu.

CIVILIAN POSITIONS IN THE MILITARY:  The Society for Women Engineers (SWE) will be hosting guest speaker Aurea L. Rivera on Tuesday, February 8 at 7:30pm in Chem Sci 101.  Ms. Rivera is an Electrical Engineering graduate from the Universty of Puerto Rico and currently works at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  She will presenting information about civilian positions in the military.  All students are welcome to attend!

PABLO FRANSISCO AT THE ROZSA:  When this year’s Winter Carnival comedian, Pablo Francisco, hits the stage, he immediately brings his audiences to their feet.  He weaves together his arsenal of characters, spontaneous outbursts, adult humor, and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff.   Pablo Francisco will be performing at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, February 12 at 9:00pm.  Tickets are $32 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $28 for students.  Not appropriate for children.

WRITING COACHES NEEDED:  The Multiliteracies (writing) Center is in need of coaches beginning in the fall.  If joining the coaching staff interests you, stop by the Center sometime soon.  Applications are due February 18th.

CONCERT IN MUB COMMONS:  Mu Beta Psi will be hosting our annual Winter Carnival concert on Friday Feb. 11th in the MUB Commons. Local bands Love Friction and This is Deer Country will be playing.  All proceeds from the event will go to benefit Mu Beta Psi’s scholarship fund that goes to a Michigan Tech student involved in a musical ensemble on campus.  Doors open at 8pm.  The cost is $5 per person.  A cash bar will be available to those of age.  Questions may be directed to Katie Sheets at kdsheets@mtu.edu.

MUSICAL IMRPROV:  Baby Wants Candy: This musical improv comedy group will be performing a brand new musical that YOU get to name and write.  This FREE event is in the MUB Ballroom during the Winter Carnival all-nighter.  Doors open at 10:30 pm; the show starts at 11 pm; pizza, cookies and hot chocolate will be served after.  Stop in, warm up, laugh your butt off! 

VALENTINES DAY MOVIE:   The KISS Club and Film Board will be screening “She’s Out of My League” at 8:30 pm on Valentine’s Day in Fisher 135.  Doors open at 8 pm.  There is no cost to you.  Bring a date, or come with friends. Enjoy free popcorn, cookies and other Valentine’s Day goodies.  Free condom roses or chocolate roses while supplies last.  Valentine’s Day and other prizes will be raffled at the end.

BIGFOOT SNOWSHOE EVENT REGISTRATION:  On-line registration for this year’s Bigfoot Snowshoe Event is finally OPEN!  Find event details and a link to registration at www.counseling.mtu.edu.  The pre-registration deadline (for a cheaper price and guaranteed t-shirt on the day of the event) is Feb. 4…so register TODAY!

POETRY SLAM:  Calling all Poets/Spoken Word Artist!  Deadline Feb. 4th:  The Poetry Slam will be Friday February 25th at 8pm in the MUB Ballroom. Anyone who is interested in performing should submit a poem to Tayloria Adams at tnadams@mtu.edu.  Poems will be accepted from now until February 4th, one entry per person. Performers will be selected and notified via email by February 9th. CASH prizes of $200, $100, and $50 will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places winners, respectively.

BENEFIT 70’S DANCE:  Engineers Without Borders is hosting a 70’s Dance in the MUB Ballroom on Saturday, Feb. 5, 8 pm – midnight.  Snacks provided; $5 cover charge; cash bar (with valid ID); prize for the best costume!  All proceeds go toward supporting our current projects in Bolivia, Guatemala and Honduras.  For more information please email Erin Valdivia (evaldivi@mtu.edu).

PAUL CASTLE BENEFIT:  There will be a Chili Fundraiser to benefit Paul Castle on FRIDAY, Feb. 11 (Friday of Winter Carnival) at St. Albert the Great Church (411 Macinnes Drive, Houghton) from 11 AM – 7 PM.  Suggested donation is $5 or more.  There will be a silent auction of local goods and services.  Volunteers are welcome and needed.  Questions can be directed to Genny Gierke (gegierke@mtu.edu).  Paul, a junior at Michigan Tech, was recently involved in a severe motor vehicle accident while traveling back to school to start the spring semester.  Icy conditions caused the vehicle in the oncoming lane to lose control and strike Paul’s vehicle. He was taken to Marquette General and later airlifted to U of M Medical Center, where he is still undergoing surgeries to repair his injuries.  All proceeds go towards Paul’s treatment and rehabilitation.
