RSO Re-registration Now Open

The clock is ticking, so don’t delay! Re-registration is a simple yet crucial task that ensures your organization’s continuity. By completing this process, you’re taking a proactive step toward a successful year filled with enriching activities and impactful initiatives.

Re-registration is available on Involvement Link as well as through the link on the email you have received.

Remember, your dedication as RSO officers and advisors is what keeps the org thriving, and re-registration is the first step in that journey. Let’s work together to make this academic year one to remember!

All RSO officers and advisors must complete the re-registration process by September 18th at 8 AM. Missing this deadline will lead to a deduction of funds allocated to your org. We understand that time is precious, but acting promptly is crucial to maintaining your org’s active status.

If you have any questions or encounter any issues during the re-registration process, don’t hesitate to reach out to rso@mtu.edu or stop in our office, MUB 112. We’re here to assist you every step of the way.

Here’s to another fantastic year of collaboration, growth, and achievement. Happy re-registering!

Bring your thinking caps – giveaways will be awarded throughout and the top team will win Michigan Tech gift cards!

Let’s Rebuild Community Painting Day

The Let’s Rebuild Community project seeks to revitalize homes and our community by supporting low-income seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities in protecting their homes as an asset and a source of pride. They seek to make repairs that are high impact and of high aesthetic value while improving safety and health in and around the home. The program relies on the labor of volunteers to assist in project completion.

For 2023, four homes have been identified in Calumet and Laurium. The next day of service will be primarily focused on painting and is this Saturday, August 12th from 8 AM until 4:30 PM. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided to the volunteers and each person will also receive a free t-shirt. Please register on GivePulse if you are able to support this meaningful work!

Volunteers will meet at 8 AM for breakfast, house assignments, and t-shirts at Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet (26016 Depot Street). All necessary tools needed as well as gloves, water, and snacks will be provided. Please wear durable clothing that you do not mind getting dirty as well as closed-toed, durable shoes. Every volunteer will be asked to sign a liability waiver.

TELUS Health App

The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being is excited to announce our updated partnership for mental health support services through the TELUS Health Student Support Program beginning July 31, 2023. The TELUS Health Student Support Program will provide 24/7/365 student support to Michigan Tech students in place of current services offered through MySSP. All features will remain the same as before: Free mental health support with access to master’s level clinicians available 24/7, real-time phone, chat, and text services as well as ongoing scheduled video sessions, and emergency/crisis support services. Options for language, culture, and/or shared identity matching with counselors will continue to be available as well. Summer Service Opportunities

Several community members have reached out to SLI requesting assistance with summer projects. Have some extra time? Give back to the Keweenaw community this summer!

Projects include:

  • Helping a lovely, elderly gentleman and his wife with yard clean up and perhaps some painting projects. He is located in Keweenaw Bay (about 20 minutes south on US 41) and would have all of the tools necessary to complete the work. They are open to any prearranged date and time. He estimated 3-6 volunteers would be ideal for a couple hours of work- more are welcome, but the projects will be finished faster.
  • The Hanka Homestead is preparing to open over Memorial Weekend. In advance of opening, they are hoping to rebuild 300-400 feet of split rail cedar fencing. They are hoping to have a group of 4-5 individuals assist over a few days or perhaps a larger group over a day or two. Supplies will be provided and we can provide work gloves for any volunteers as well.

If you’re interested in supporting either of these projects individually or as a group email us at huskyhelpers@mtu.edu and we can get you in contact!

A new organization focusing on revitalizing our communities is also seeking volunteers for their two summer project days: July 29th and August 12th. These are full days of service from ~8AM-3PM. Breakfast, lunch, a t-shirt, and all necessary supplies are provided. Sign-up is available on GivePulse at the preceding links.

Crowdsourcing Tick Project at MTU

The Genomic Sequencing lab wants ticks from you, your family, and your pets. The goal of this project is to identify the prevalence of tick-borne illnesses in the copper country. Starting May 1st and ending September 30th please bring any ticks you find to the collection boxes on the MTU campus:

1.    U.J. Noblet Forestry Building– Main Entrance

2.    Great Lakes Research Center, 100 Phoenix Dr – Building Lobby

The collection begins May 1st and ends September 30th.

How to remove and preserve ticks

1.    Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible.

2.    Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you cannot remove the mouth easily with tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.

3.    After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

4.    Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of a live tick by

  • Placing it in a sealed bag ziploc bag, multiple ticks from the same location source can be placed in the same bag
  • Bring tick into drop off point within 8 hours or place tick in a sealed bag, in freezer until dropping off at Michigan Tech

5.    Drop off points at MTU:

  • U.J. Noblet Forestry Building– Main Entrance
  • Great Lakes Research Center, 100 Phoenix Dr – Building Lobby

6.    Follow directions at the dropoff site to ensure the tick is properly preserved.

Host an Event during O-Week or Welcome Week!

Each year Registered Student Organizations are invited to host events during Orientation Week and Welcome Week in order to introduce themselves to the campus community and welcome their peers to campus. The audience for Orientation Week is primarily first-year students, while events for Welcome Week should be designed for any member of the student body. This year:

  • O-Week is August 20th-25th
  • Welcome Week is August 26th-September 2nd

You must complete this form in order to request to host an event during either week. Events planned through this form will be included in official Orientation or Welcome Week promotional materials.

Please contact Orientation at orientation@mtu.edu for questions regarding O-Week or Student Leadership and Involvement at activities@mtu.edu for questions regarding Welcome Week. This form will close on May 31st.

Congratulations to this year’s President’s Volunteer Service Award Recipients!

Michigan Tech became a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award earlier this year because we realized that many of our students were already meeting or exceeding the requirements each year. Any student who tracks their verifiable service hours on our service website, GivePulse each year will be eligible to receive the award. This year four individuals have received this honor.

First, we have two bronze-level awardees whose service exceeded 100 hours.

Congratulations to:

  • Kayley Elmbald, who served as an active member of the National Ski Patrol and as a volunteer instructor for the Outdoor Emergency Care course.
  • And to Meg Pomranka, who served as a volunteer coach with her High School Color Guard team.

We also have two recipients who have received gold-level honors for over 250 service hours completed. Congratulations to:

  • Kaitlyn Brady, who served as a volunteer assistant athletic trainer with Michigan Tech athletics.
  • And to Ryan Michael, who served as a counselor at Camp Ao-Wa-Kiya this past summer.

Thank you all for giving your time and talent to your community.
