Michigan Tech is now a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award!

Michigan Tech is proud to announce that we are now a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award! The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too. Eligible students who record a qualifying number of verified community service hours on GivePulse in the 12-month period between Monday of Week 10 of consecutive Spring semesters will automatically be certified for recognition. Students can learn more about how to qualify on our website.

Due to our status as a certifying organization and previous inconsistencies, we have created a new comprehensive guide on what SLI classifies and will verify as service hours. These guidelines apply to all service hour submissions received on or after January 1, 2023 regardless of when the service hours were performed. The most important addition is that “Submissions must include a detailed description of the service performed as well as a phone number or email address of a verification contact.” To meet the requirements of the PVSA, we must be able to verify all hour completions. We hope with a better understanding of these requirements, students will continue to have a meaningful and significant impact on our communities

Husky Innovate

January 17-20th, the second week of the spring semester, Husky Innovate will host innovation-themed talks and events including the Bob Mark Business Model Pitch Competition.  Started by Michigan Tech’s University Innovation Fellows (UIFs) in 2015, Innovation Week is a celebration of innovation across our Tech Community.  Students, faculty, staff, and community are invited.

Check out our lineup here.  Register early for locations and Zoom links.

On-Campus Jobs Expo

Career Services is coordinating an On-Campus Jobs Expo that will be held on Jan 12 from 12-3 p.m. in the MUB Ballroom A.  All students are encouraged to stop by and see the on-campus job opportunities.  You might just walk away with one.

On-campus jobs provide opportunities for Michigan Tech students. A part-time job offers income to students who need it and is an important co-curricular opportunity. As a co-curricular opportunity, on-campus work can lead to internships and co-ops, opening the door to full-time offers immediately after graduation. It can also help a student establish a strong foundation for research that leads to enhanced graduate school opportunities.

The Alley Makerspace

The Alley Makerspace is preparing to open for the spring semester and we want you to join our team!

The Alley is a student-led makerspace in the Memorial Union Building. Sponsored by Husky Innovate and Pavlis Honors College, the space was made to be a completely free resource for everyone at MTU to create and innovate. The Alley depends on volunteer coaches to help run the space, train and guide makers, and host fun events for students to learn more about creating. In exchange for dedicating a few hours a week to the space, coaches receive tap access to enter the Alley when it might be closed to other students. The tools in the space that coaches are trained to use include 3-D printers, an electronics/soldering station, sewing machines, a Cricut, a CNC, and woodworking equipment such as a table saw, miter saw, scroll saw, drill press, jigsaw, and basic hand tools.

If you’re interested in joining the team, please fill out this Google form!

If you have any questions about the coach role or the Alley in general, contact makerspace@mtu.edu

Sign-Up for Groups and Workshops!

The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being offers a variety of group therapy sessions and workshops throughout the semester.
Group therapy can be an effective form of treatment for various reasons, including receiving support from others with a similar concern, learning more about the topic through group education, helping to feel not alone, and providing support to others in the group.

  • See our group therapy offerings and sign-up on our website!

Workshops are a great option for students who wish to explore various aspects of their well-being in an informal setting. All of our workshops are led by licensed counselors, but the focus is geared toward personal exploration and development.

Plant & Gardening Club’s 1st Annual White Elephant Gift Exchange

Glad the fall semester is finally over? Ready to celebrate your survival before heading home? Want to enjoy some greenery and a fun tropical holiday tree?

Join the Plant & Gardening Club as we host our first annual white elephant gift exchange! We hope you’ll join us to celebrate the end of the fall semester, the friends we’ve made, and the coming holidays. Anybody is welcome to come to the event which will be held inside The Bubble Greenhouse (between the MEEM and ChemSci building), however, we ask that if you want to receive a gift that you bring a gift. We’ll start at 6pm and end at 8pm!

Hot coffee, tea, cocoa, and food will be provided for the duration of the event! Other activities, such as coloring, card making, decoration creation, and board games, will be provided as well.

Some light guidelines for the gifts:

– We encourage a price cap of $20, if you choose to go over that is your choice, just do not expect a gift of equal value.

– We encourage plant-themed gifts, but they are not mandatory.

– No inappropriate gifts, please.

– No gift shaming, we shouldn’t have to expand on this.

– Have fun with this and be silly!

Late Night Programming presents

Chris grew up in a small town outside of Nashville, TN.  He was just a small guy with big dreams, but luckily for you, none of those dreams materialized and he decided to pursue stand-up comedy. Armed with a guitar, Chris’ humor has been described as “edgy and smart,” but that’s probably only because he likes wearing a sweater vest. Make no mistake though – Chris’ innocent and laid-back demeanor compounded with his aggressive hilarity consistently catches crowds off-guard.

Chris has worked with everyone from Last Comic Standing’s Jon Reep to SNL’s Collin Jost. His comedic songs, which often use acoustic melodies to launch into an array of satirical and self-deprecating lyrics, have been met with much approval from Chris’ rapidly growing fan base. Plus, there’s a rumor going around that catching one of Chris’ shows automatically makes you cooler. Maybe it’s just a rumor, but what if it isn’t? Are you really willing to risk it?

Applications are open now for the four-day Institute which will be held January 4th-7th at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Not a typical leadership retreat, the Institute is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. Sixty students will be selected to participate in this year’s Institute. Apply by November 14th to be considered. More information, including the application link, can be found on the Student Leadership and Involvement website.

Announcing this year’s Alternative Spring Break Trips!

Community Development – Chillos Valley, Ecuador

In collaboration with the Manna Project International, this year’s international alternative spring break trip will work with community organizers in a focus area selected by the group.

All programs seek to “create communities of young leaders that help break the cycle of poverty in underserved communities around the world.” Our group will be able to select a focus area that aligns with our group’s interests. Focus area options include education, health, sports and recreation, business, agriculture, and the environment.

This trip will depart on Saturday, March 4, 2023, and fly to our destination for a Sunday arrival. Both lodging and food will be provided by our host organization. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Ecuador on Saturday, March 11th, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to eleven students. Due to support from the Student Activity Fee, this trip will only cost $825 per student which includes food, travel, accommodations, and program materials. Any individual expenses related to passports or other travel necessities will be the responsibility of the student.

Are you interested but have more questions? Join SLI and representatives from the Manna Project to learn more at our Information Session on Tuesday, November 15th at 4 PM on Zoom.

Indigenous Sovereignty and Horticulture – White Mountain Apache Reservation, AZ

In collaboration with the Highland Support Project and Partners in Service, this year’s domestic alternative spring break trip will travel to Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ to work with the Apache Nation. Their programs are primarily based on struggles for food, water, and housing sovereignty. Our group will specifically assist with agricultural projects pertaining to the tribe’s horticulture and produce enterprise, Ndee Bikiyaa, including the planning and building of infrastructures such as raised garden beds and cisterns.

This trip will depart on Friday, March 3, 2023, in a Michigan Tech 15-passenger van. Participants will stay in an Airbnb Cabin near the volunteer site. Most meals will be prepared and provided by the group itself. Cultural immersion experiences, educational opportunities, and group reflection will be incorporated throughout the week. The group will depart from Arizona on Saturday, March 11th, and return to campus the following day.

This trip can accommodate up to nine students. Due to support from the Student Activity Fee, this trip will only cost $350 per student which includes all food, travel, accommodations, and program materials.

Are you interested but have more questions? Join SLI and reps from the Highland Project for an Information Session on Tuesday, November 15th at 6 PM on Zoom.

All interested students are invited to apply for these incredible opportunities! Applications are due no later than December 4, 2022.

If you have financial concerns regarding the program fee, please contact Danielle Meirow at dlmeirow@mtu.edu to discuss options for support.

All selected participants will be required to attend two pre-trip meetings to cover trip expectations, topic-based education, and team-building activities.

Invite Dr. S to your event!

There is a new simple way to get “the Dean” out to your event – hat and all! If you are interested in having Dr. Southerland participate in your club sports practice, attend your hall tradition, or speak at an event, let us know by completing this simple form. Let’s HuskyUP and make it happen!

Dr. Southerland (a/k/a “Dean of Huskies”) is committed to meeting with as many Huskies and attending as many events as possible! Requests will be considered in the order in which they are received. Because of his demanding schedule, Dr. S. may not be able to attend every event; however, we will try to accommodate as many requests as possible. In consideration of Dr. S.’s time and the desire of other groups to host him at events, please limit your group’s requests to once a semester and to using only this form instead of his @mtudeanofhuskies Instagram.

Ideally, requests should be submitted at least four weeks in advance.
