The LeaderShape Institute is back for its 27th year at Michigan Tech and YOU could join the community of over 1,000 alumni who have participated in this life-changing leadership retreat!

Applications are open now for the four-day Institute which will be held January 4th-7th at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI. Not a typical leadership retreat, the Institute is grounded in helping individuals identify the values they hold that lead to making a difference in the communities around them. Through self-assessment, intensive small group discussions, team-building challenges, and more, participants will develop a vision for something they care about. 

By leading with passion, integrity, and a healthy disregard for the impossible, participants explore who they are and the impact that they want to have on communities working towards a more caring, just, and equitable society.

Sixty students will be selected to participate in this year’s Institute. Apply by November 13th to be considered. More information, including the application link, can be found on the Student Leadership and Involvement website.

Winter Carnival 2023 Stage Review Application

Winter Carnival 2023: Tasty Foods for Wintry Moods is coming! Stage Review is a great way to be involved in the festivities! 

Applications will be accepted starting on October 21, 2022, at 9:00 AM and are DUE by Friday, November 18, 2022, at 5:00 PM. A $20 sponsorship fee, in check form only, MUST be turned in to the Blue Key Office by November 18, 2022, before 5:00 PM. Please make checks payable to “Blue Key” and clearly write the organization’s name on the subject line.

You must send at least one representative to the audition meeting/drawing, which will be at 8 PM on Thursday, December 1, 2022, in Fisher 130. Groups with duplicate themes will be informed at this event or prior. This event will be used to answer questions and draw audition times.

Winter Carnival 2023 Royalty Coronation Applications

We are excited to have you apply for candidacy for the 2023 Winter Carnival Royalty Competition! Before applying please be aware of some of your duties and time commitments as a candidate.

Preliminary interviews will be held on Saturday, December 3rd in MUB Ballroom B. If you are not selected by the judges to be a finalist, your responsibilities will end at this time.

If you are selected as a finalist, you will have the opportunity to meet and work with many new people. There is a sizable time commitment to be met with this position, especially during the month of January. The entire process involves interviews, luncheons, rehearsals, and Carnival Week appearances. The finalists meeting on Thursday, December 8th at 7pm, will more fully explain the duties and time commitments of the finalists.

You will be notified the week before Thanksgiving Break of your interview time and location. We hope that you will consider it an honor to be applying as a candidate for the 2023 Winter Carnival Royalty Competition. We look forward to working with you!

The application will close at 5 pm on November 4th.

Come make a splash with our new inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT! You can test your individual skills on the course or challenge your friend to a race across the obstacles. Events will be held this fall for current MTU Students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month). Student/Access ID is required to be presented upon entry into the pool area and a swim test is required before accessing the obstacle.

3MT Competition

Participating in the 3MT can be a way for you to develop important communication and research skills, and to participate in the building of research culture at Michigan Tech. Cash prizes are also available to the top competitors and the people’s choice. In addition, the winners of the local 3MT competition are given a chance to represent Michigan Tech at the next level of competition, and potentially even national and international 3MT competitions, which provides an excellent networking and professional development opportunity.

Conflict Resolution Workshop

Do you ever wish you knew how to handle different types of conflict better? Are you interested in learning new strategies?

Join GSG and Rob Bishop, Director of Academic Conduct in an interactive workshop where you will learn conflict resolution strategies and who to talk to for help, and how to engage in restorative dialogues to resolve interpersonal conflicts.

Have you ever been in a situation — in a job interview, meeting, or even a social situation — where you had to talk about your achievements? It’s not easy, is it? Many of us struggle when it comes to talking about our own accomplishments. Cultural and gender modesty norms as well as impostor syndrome can prevent anyone from acknowledging their remarkable attributes and expressing their achievements.

#IamRemarkable is a Google initiative empowering women and other underrepresented groups to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond. The program has two goals:

1. Improve the self-promotion motivation and skills of women and underrepresented groups
2. Challenge the social perception around self-promotion

Trained facilitators Liz Fujita and Gretchen Hein will lead this impactful workshop for a small group of students on Tuesday, October 25th at 6 PM in the MUB Superior Room. Participants are encouraged to register in advance on Involvement Link as space is limited.

Come join Students for Sustainability at our Fall Craft Night! We will be making glass jar lanterns and upcycled planters out of tin cans.  Please use the QR Code to let us know if you are coming. Bring any of your own craft materials and a good crafting spirit! 

Do you like to garden, forage for mushrooms, grow herbs on your patio, visit the farmers markets, or preserve foods? Are you a farmer, angler, hunter, or local foods advocate?

If so, we invite you to share your experiences and knowledge in a community photo project sharing stories about local foods in our area. Sign-up is open! We live in an area with a vibrant culture of hunting, foraging, fishing, gathering, and growing a diversity of foods. This project will celebrate these while informing next steps in new food systems initiatives, such as a pilot farm-to-school program. 

Participants will take part in several small-group meetings in Houghton/Hancock throughout Fall 2022 to share their local food photos and stories, with opportunities to share these in a collective program or exhibit if participants choose. No previous photography or writing experience is necessary.

This research project is part of a larger initiative led by Western UP Food Systems Collaborative partners and funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.

The Swing Club at MTU and the Black Students Association will be hosting an entertaining and educational showing of the 1939 film “Keep Punching” which famously features an extended swing dance number choreographed and danced by Frankie Manning, the Ambassador of Lindy Hop.

The showing will be Sunday, October 23rd at 5pm in the DHH Ballroom. Snacks will be provided.

Mindful Yoga

Fresh Coast Yoga is visiting campus this week to provide students with a FREE hour of mindful yoga on Thursday, October 20th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The class will be held in the WADS Annex G11W. Mats and equipment are provided. Participation will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. 

Flu Shot Clinics

MTU is offering ongoing flu shot clinics during the month of October in partnership with UP Health Systems. The last clinic is scheduled for October 25th, from 11 AM – 2 PM. Flu shots are FREE to students provided that a student’s insurance covers the cost of the shot. Otherwise, flu shots are $40 per student, payable by cash, check, or credit card. There is no need to make an appointment as all clinics are walk-in friendly.

Are you wondering if counseling services are right for you? Perhaps you are feeling extra stressed because of school, or maybe you are concerned about a friend. The CSMHW is hosting Let’s Talk and Color, an informal setting where students can color, distress, and talk to one of our licensed clinicians about the services that our center offers. Students can visit the CDI on October 27th from 1 PM to 3 PM to participate!

Beta Sigma Theta has recently partnered with the American Cancer Society to raise money and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. Through the month of September, they have been focused on their philanthropy event Red & Gold Together for Pediatric Cancer. This campaign has consisted of online fundraising initiatives, as well as, their all-day on-campus event. As well, through the month of September, they have been sharing the importance of fighting pediatric cancer through their social media with real-time statistics. Not only were they able to get the Houghton community and Michigan Tech involved, but they also raised over $1,700 for pediatric cancer research. Beta Sigma Theta’s campaign was the first time that the American Cancer Society reached the Upper Peninsula!

Registration for Fall Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) courses at MTU opens today.

This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to know to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. 

Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary. Minimum age of 20 years old. Individuals will be responsible for supplying their own ammunition (100 rounds). There will be a firearms proficiency test and a written test that students have to pass to complete the course. 

The cost is $150/person with their own equipment and $185/person with rental equipment (9mm pistol). 

Choose from two different course dates: October 29 or November 5. Each course runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is held at the SDC. Class size is limited.

Canterbury House Food Pantry is back for the school year! Let us help you alleviate the burden of purchasing food. We offer contactless and anonymous pick-up of groceries and toiletries to the Michigan Tech Community at The Canterbury House at 1405 E. Houghton Ave.

To place an order and select a pick-up time, fill out the Google Form at any time. Supplies may run out, but we will try our best to meet your needs. Feel free to stop inside and meet our students as well! Our house hours are 10 AM – 4 PM Monday-Thursday.

Keweenaw Pride is hosting six events to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride in the Keweenaw for the week of October 9th-15th! The events, culminating in the 23rd Annual Drag Show on Saturday, October 15th, are open and free for all students to attend. Details of each specific event are listed in the poster to the right.

Keweenaw Pride presents the 23rd Annual Drag Show, featuring six professional drag performers! It’s the most fun event of the year, and it’s happening for the 23rd year. Drag artists have been a source of joy for the LGBTQIA+ community, and this night will be no different. We have some fantastic talent coming to MTU, and we are expecting a night of absolute fun and incredible energy. Everyone is accepted and wanted, so come out and prepare to have a blast!

Tech students get in free with their Tech ID, non-MTU college students get in for $3, and the general public (including MTU faculty and staff) get in for $7. Tickets are available online at buyhuskiestickets.com and at the door.

Do you like to garden, forage for mushrooms, grow herbs on your patio, visit the farmers markets, or preserve foods? Are you a farmer, angler, hunter, or local foods advocate?

If so, we invite you to share your experiences and knowledge in a community photo project sharing stories about local foods in our area. Sign-up is open! We live in an area with a vibrant culture of hunting, foraging, fishing, gathering, and growing a diversity of foods. This project will celebrate these while informing next steps in new food systems initiatives, such as a pilot farm-to-school program. 

Participants will take part in several small-group meetings in Houghton/Hancock throughout Fall 2022 to share their local food photos and stories, with opportunities to share these in a collective program or exhibit if participants choose. No previous photography or writing experience is necessary.

This research project is part of a larger initiative led by Western UP Food Systems Collaborative partners and funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund.

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES® is an annual event hosted by the Society of African American Men (SAAM) and Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE) to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and to raise awareness about gender-based violence. Join the Western UP Food Systems Collaborative on Sunday, October 2nd for the first annual Harvest Celebration! All are welcome to this free event to celebrate and learn from farmers, gardeners, and local food enthusiasts. You can catch North Harvest CSA doing a fermentation demonstration, Apple Acres Farm giving a talk on the benefits of tinctures, and Tapiola Homestead showing the key to beautifully braided bread. The Harvest Celebration will conclude with a farm tour at the wonderful Mother Farmer in Ewen. Light refreshments will be provided, as well as an opportunity for folks to barter and trade items such as garden abundance, vegetables, seeds, honey, jam, and more.

The Western UP Food Systems Collaborative is a grassroots coalition of food growers and procurers, public health and civic partners, scientists, educators, land and water stewards, students, and all community members.

Do you have an innovative idea that could disrupt the status quo and “business as usual”? Pitch your idea at the Idea Pitch Competition. Each contestant will have two minutes to share their idea in an interactive community setting.

Samantha Ege* — Wednesday-Friday, Sept. 28-30

The culturally unique and diverse music of women and Black Renaissance composers are the focus of Samantha Ege’s residency at the Rozsa. Ege is an internationally recognized concert pianist, renowned public speaker and award-winning researcher. This Wednesday through Friday (Sept. 28-30), Ege will perform, speak and lead a piano workshop for local pianists.

Ege is a leading interpreter and scholar of 20th century composer Florence Price, the first African American woman to have her symphony played by a major American orchestra. Her performance will include two of Price’s works.

New Venture Creation with Ed Kim

Ed Kim is a serial tech entrepreneur who has founded, funded, and led several startups as well as having a variety of financial and engineering leadership assignments with Fortune 500 companies.

Currently, he manages a grant program for the State of Michigan, funding DeepTech innovations of the Michigan research institutions; and is a Limited Partner at AVG DeepTech Venture Fund.

Join us on Wednesday, September 28th, from 4-5 pm as Ed shares his insights on commercializing innovations and lessons learned as an entrepreneur and an investor. This virtual event (Zoom) is open to the public.

The Alley Makerspace is NOW OPEN! No reservations required and all supplies and tools are completely free to use for MTU students, staff, and faculty!

Idea Pitch Competition

Do you have an innovative idea that could disrupt the status quo and “business as usual”? Pitch your idea at the Idea Pitch Competition. Each contestant will have two minutes to share their idea in an interactive community setting.

Judges will vote to select top pitches and award cash prizes to the top contestants:

• First place: $200
• Second place: $100
• Third place: $50
• Honorable mention: $25 (two prizes offered)
• Audience favorite: $25

This event will be hosted in the GLRC from 5:00-7:00 pm on October 4th.  Snacks will be available.

Come make a splash with our new inflatable pool obstacle course called the WIBIT! You can test your individual skills on the course or challenge your friend to a race across the obstacles. Events will be held this fall for current MTU Students and SDC Access Pass Holders (minimum 1-month). Parade of Nations

Since 1989, the Houghton and Hancock communities have been celebrating the rich cultural diversity of the Keweenaw through the Parade of Nations and the Multicultural Festival that follows. We are excited to continue that tradition in 2022.

Volunteers are the driving force behind this event. They help with event set up, walk in the parade, serve as parade marshals, and provide support at the multicultural festival. Explore the volunteer positions and shifts available and sign up for the one that best fits your interests! Event organizers will be in contact as the event approaches to share additional instructions and event details.

Usher at the Rozsa

As a Volunteer Usher, you play a critical role in creating a joyful experience at arts events. Led by Rozsa staff, you and other Ushers work together to greet guests, admit folks into the theater, assist with seating and wayfinding, connect guests to venue accommodations, and support effective crowd flow and emergency procedures. Usher roles will be decided as a team at the beginning of the volunteer shift.

Athletics is looking for student organizations to help collect parking fees during home Women’s and Men’s Basketball games. 75% of the collected fees go to the org.

Fee collection begins 75 minutes prior to game start and until either the start of the second half of a single game or the beginning of the second game of a doubleheader. Safety vests and hand warmers are provided however, students should dress appropriately for the weather. Eight people are needed per shift.

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) and the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library (VPOL) are working together this semester to promote academic excellence. The library will hold open library research help hours every other Tuesday and Wednesday, from 2-5 pm starting on September 6th in Library 244. Librarians will be available during these study sessions and look forward to helping students make the most of the library’s resources.
