In today’s rapidly evolving world, the call for true inclusion has never been more critical. However, the gap between intention and action can often hinder progress. This workshop aims to bridge that gap by providing you with the tools, strategies, and insights needed to transform your commitment to inclusion into practical, sustainable change.

The Michigan Tech LeaderShape® Institute has continued to evolve and has been training leaders from our campus since 1996.

The 2024 LeaderShape® Institute will take place January 3-6 (at the end of winter break) at the Ford Center in Alberta, MI.

There is a minimal cost of $100 for participants to attend the Institute, however, that cost is often sponsored by campus departments and organizations. Transportation to and from the Institute, meals, and lodging are provided.

Participants must be available and are expected to stay for the entire length of the Institute. Applications for the 2024 Institute® are now open!

Help the brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon fundraise money to help offset the cost of a member’s hospital bills while he is in recovery!

Starting October 9th and going through October 13th, for every $500 that is raised, one member will volunteer to shave their head to further promote the fundraiser!

The 41 North Film Festival returns to the Rozsa, November 2-5, with a line up of over 20 films, special guests, music, and more. The festival is free with something for everyone. Among the many excellent films screening during the weekend is The Elephant 6 Recording Co., a documentary about the music collective that gave rise to such groups as Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples in Stereo. Featured in the film is math professor Robert Schneider, who was a founding member of the collective. Following the film there will be a reception and music by the band Liquid Mike.

I am a student here at NMU and President of the College Democrats here. I understand that there are various political groups up there, but there isn’t a Democratic group up there. And I wish to open the door for campus political life to become more diverse and rich. I want to create a true political representation of college students all over the Upper Peninsula. I am the only Democratic club in the Upper Peninsula currently. If there is at least one person who is willing to take the helm and steer the ship so to speak I think we could do good things for all.

G.R.I.T. is an interactive, half-day leadership workshop designed to help you develop in the areas of motivation, perseverance, habit formation, and goal setting. Through a variety of activities, each individual will come to understand more about themselves and how they can achieve individual success. The skills learned can aid students in working towards any aspiration – from leading their student organization to increasing their GPA to running a marathon. Come join your peers as together we gain resilience and inspire tenacity!

G.R.I.T. is held once a semester. The fall session will be held on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, from 9:00 AM-12:30 PM. Limited space is available as every participant will receive free program materials, snacks, and a gift.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an international competition developed by the University of Queensland Australia. GSG hosts an annual competition every fall, and the winner will present at the regional levels of the competition.

Michigan Tech’s 2023 3MT competition will be held on November 9, 2023. Preliminary rounds will be happening from 10am-1pm in the Great Lakes Research Center Conference Room 202. Finals will be from 6-8 pm in the U J Noblet Forestry Building G002.

Cash prizes: $300-first place, $200-second place, $100- People’s choice award

We are the largest haunted house in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our volunteer group creates an amazing experience for all ages on a small budget. This fundraiser continues to help provide free open skating and free ice skate rental for all patrons of the L’Anse Meadowbrook Arena.

After a short hiatus, the ski swap at Mont Ripley is back! The swap is a fundraiser for the Copper Country Snowsports Club (formerly Mont Ripley Race Team). 

Gather your gear to sell, and drop it off Friday, October 6th from 5-8 pm at the Mont Ripley Chalet. If you are looking at shopping for winter gear, normal sale hours will be 11-2 on October 7th with an early bird hour from 10-11am.

October 9th will mark 56 years since Che Guevara was executed, bringing an end to a reign of terror by the Marxist revolutionary and international thug. Unfortunately, most students never learn the names of the innocents Che ordered in front of his firing squads or the effect his quest to establish socialism had on the people of Latin America. Instead, Che’s likeness has been idolized, and emblazoned on t-shirts, coffee mugs, and billboards.

To counter the lionizing of this cowardly killer, Young America’s Foundation works with students around the country to tell the truth about Che on the anniversary of his death. “No More Che Day” is designed to educate campuses about Che’s violent life and death, and underscore the faults of socialism.

YAF students will be tabling on DHH Lawn on October 9th from 9 a.m. to noon. In addition, we will have an informational meeting at 7 p.m. in Fisher 231.

Come play soccer with a massive inflatable bubble around each player! The Outdoor Adventure Program will be hosting its first-ever GNAR medallion hunt! There will be 6 medallions hidden around Houghton and its surrounding areas. We will be releasing clues to the location of the medallions via Instagram and Facebook every other day once the challenge begins.

Are you working on a pitch or business model for your new venture?  Do you have an innovative idea?    In his free time, Joe Corso mentors entrepreneurs at a local Austin, TX business accelerator.  Corso, a Michigan Tech alum, has an impressive career leading new initiatives throughout his corporate career.  Joe is excited to mentor our Husky Innovate startup teams in order to help them move their ideas forward.  These meetings will be held regularly throughout the year.  

This fall we will meet online from 4:00 – 5:00 pm est, on 9/26, 10/19, 11/9, and 11/30.  Select the date(s) that you would like attend.  Spots for Office Hours are limited and based on availability.   We will follow up with a Zoom link to confirm.   

Joe Corso bio:  Joe is Founder and President of TouchPoint Inc. where he provides management consulting to various technology companies in the Austin area. Prior to that, Joe has held executive management positions at IBM, Picture Network International (sold to Kodak), Dazel (sold to HP), AlterPoint and Mirage Networks. Joe is an accomplished speaker, advisor, mentor and board member who values the professional and personal relationships he has built with colleagues throughout the years. Joe holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. When he is not spending time with cool technology companies and teams, he enjoys making sawdust in his woodworking shop and driving his Porsche Cayman S, fondly named “Piglet”, on racetracks across Texas.

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society at Michigan Tech invites the campus community to participate in Orange Shirt Day on September 30th.

Originating from Canada in 2013, Orange Shirt Day (also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) is a holiday that recognizes the legacy of Indian residential school systems both in the United States and Canada. Under the residential school system, hundreds of thousands of Native children were stripped from their families between the 1880s and the 1970s. These children were brought to federal or religious residential schools, where they were assimilated through abusive and destructive means that were meant to break them of their cultures, languages, and spiritualities.

By participating in Orange Shirt Day, we are recognizing the legacy of the residential school system by honoring the survivors and those children whose lives were taken from them by the residential school systems. So, join us on September 30th by wearing an orange shirt and declaring that “Every Child Matters.”

Come play soccer with a massive inflatable bubble around each player! The game is a fun twist on the classic sport that helps level the playing field and can be a great way to exercise and have fun with friends! Refreshments will be provided and it will be free for all students. Show up anytime during the event for some bouncy soccer wipeouts!

The first in-person tournament for the semester will be Sunday, September 24th starting at 5 pm EST in Walker 109. This will be on Scarlet/Violet cartridges and the format will be monotype singles. Pokemon or moves from the DLC mons will not be allowed since it hasn’t been released for that long. Pokemon that could be transferred from home before the DLC can be used as long as all members of the team share the same type. For more information please contact rgjahn@mtu.edu.

The Great Northern Adventure Race (G.N.A.R.) is a full-day race for extreme athletes looking to test their athletic ability and mental toughness. Combining multiple outdoor disciplines, including but not limited to paddling, cycling, and running; racers are pushed to demonstrate both their problem-solving and mental toughness capabilities. The completion of mini-activities at the end of each leg will award racers clues to their next locations.

You are responsible for your in-race nutrition and hydration.

$25/person or $50/team race fee includes both a t-shirt and post-race meal.

Prizes will be awarded to top finishers.

The tenants of the Sustainability Demonstration House would like to invite you to our upcoming Sustainability Open House on Saturday, September 30 from 2-5 p.m.! On Tuesday, September 26th from Noon to 1:00PM volunteers will walk and stand with dogs in designated parts of Michigan Tech campus with loveable, friendly doggies to drum up excitement for sporting events occurring during Homecoming (soccer, volleyball, and football). Volunteers with dogs who sign up will receive an email about where to meet on campus when the event nears. The designated area will have a Student Leadership and Involvement sandwich board with information about upcoming sporting events and Homecoming activities.

Prepare to ride the waves of excitement because we’ve got a sea of activities lined up for you. From delicious food that will make your taste buds do the “sailor’s jig” to games that will have you hooked, K-Day is the ultimate maritime adventure.

But what’s a nautical event without some toe-tappin’ sea shanties and maritime melodies? Our live music will keep you groovin’ like a sailor on shore leave!

And that’s not all, folks. Brace yourselves for some wet and wild surprises! There might be a few water activities to cool you off and keep the fun flowing. So, bring a sense of adventure and come prepared.

The Office of Alumni Engagement is offering free professional headshots for students during Fall Career Fair, taken perfectly for your Handshake or LinkedIn profiles. A photographer will take headshots on September 19, 2023, from 12-4 p.m. at the SDC.

Photos will be taken first come, first served. Each student will take (1) test shot and then have a limit of (3) posed shots.

Please sign up if you intend to utilize this free service. The deadline to sign up is 4 p.m. on September 18, 2023. This sign-up is for us to have an approximation of expected crowds and does not guarantee you will be able to get in at that exact time.

The Alley Makerspace is preparing to open for the fall semester and we want you to join our team!

The Alley is a student-led makerspace in the Memorial Union Building sponsored by Husky Innovate and Pavlis Honors College. The space was made to be a completely free resource for everyone at MTU to create and innovate. The Alley depends on volunteer coaches to help run the space, train and guide makers, and host fun events for students to learn more about creating.

In exchange for dedicating a few hours a week to the space, coaches receive tap access to enter the Alley when it might be closed to other students. The tools in the space that coaches are trained to use include 3-D printers, an electronics/soldering station, sewing machines, a Cricut, a CNC, and woodworking equipment such as a table saw, band saw, miter saw, dremels, router, drill press, jigsaw, and basic hand tools.If you’re interested in joining the team, please fill out this Google form! Keep an eye on the Student Scoop for our announcement of the Alley’s opening for the semester. An Afternoon on the Town is an opportunity for local businesses and organizations to welcome you to the Keweenaw and show you what they have to offer.  Starting on campus, down College Avenue, and throughout the downtown Houghton area on Shelden Avenue there will be music, refreshments, and giveaways for participants.

Over $3,000 in prizes are also available to participating students! To enter to win one of more than 80 raffle prizes, simply tap your ID at BOTH tapper locations on the route. The first tap-in station and start of the route will be located on the north side of the Memorial Union Building. Michigan Collegiate Student Advisory Task Force returns for 2023-2024

Department of State now accepting applications from students looking to engage voters on campus

LANSING, Mich. – Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today announced the application period to serve on the 2023-2024 Michigan Collegiate Student Advisory Task Force is now open to college and university students across the state. The task force is a nonpartisan initiative of the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) in partnership with Campus Vote Project (CVP), a project of the Fair Elections Center, a national, nonpartisan voting rights organization. The student task force will work through the 2024 election cycle to improve youth voter engagement. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 15.  

“It’s critical that today’s young voters are also informed voters, and this task force helps young people better understand the process and truly engage in our democracy,” said Secretary Benson. “We look forward to hearing directly from the new class of task force members on the best ways to support and empower students at Michigan colleges and universities, help them fully understand our state’s new voting rights laws, and know exactly how to exercise their rights.”

The task force, first established by Benson in 2019, brings together students from across the state who are passionate about civic engagement. Task force members will serve as liaisons between MDOS, their student body, school administrators, and peers. The group will advise on the unique experiences and barriers for student voters, helping to ensure the voices of young people are heard in our state’s elections. 

Appointed students will serve on the task force with optional enrollment in a paid CVP Democracy Fellowship from September 2023 through December 2024. As a Democracy Fellow, students will be provided the tools to turn their civic engagement ideas into action. Democracy Fellows will work to remove on-campus voting barriers, to educate their peers about elections, and to build a campus coalition to support student voter engagement.

“The Campus Vote Project team is excited to partner with Secretary Benson to provide more opportunities for student leaders who are committed to expanding voting access for their peers,” said Landon Myers, Michigan Coordinator for CVP. “If Michigan is going to maintain the nation’s highest youth voter turnout in 2024, we must continue empowering students to organize their campus communities and remove barriers to voting.”

Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in a college or university in Michigan and demonstrate a commitment to voting and enthusiasm for voter engagement through their past experience, answers to application questions, and an interview. A total of 20 to 30 students from around the state will be selected to serve, with no more than two students representing any one school. Students set to graduate during the tenure of the task force will not be considered.

Local bookstore and homegrown celebrity team up for a fun-filled geektastic charity event! 

Co-founders Shana Porteen, owner of Black Ice Comics & Books in Houghton, MI, and Patricia Summersett, actor/voice actor from L’anse, MI, are proud to announce the 5th Annual GeekU.P. to be held September 9^th at Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in Houghton, MI.  GeekU.P., which will be 12pm to 7pm, is a mini-con charity event celebrating geek culture offering an artists’ alley, vendors, cosplay contest, celebrity Q&A’s, autograph sessions, and more!

This year’s charity recipient is Unite Mental Health and Wellness, located in Houghton, MI.  Unite Mental Health and Wellness is a nonprofit mental health service organization committed to helping individuals in our community connect to non-emergency mental healthcare.  Partnering with providers both locally and remotely, they support professionals and services currently available in our community while filling in the gaps where care may be lacking. 

GeekU.P. has an exciting celebrity guest line-up this year and they will take part in Q&A sessions and autograph signings for attendees: 

Colleen O’Shaughnessey is a voice actor who can be heard in numerous animated series and features, video games, commercials and toys. She is best known for her roles as “Tails” in Cartoon Network’s animated series, Sonic Boom, as well as in the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie, “Wasp” in Avengers-Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, “Jazz” in Nickelodeon’s Danny Phantom, and “Sora” in the anime series, Digimon & Digimon Adventure Tri. Other noted voice roles for fans of anime include “Ino” and “Konohamaru” in Naruto, “ChoCho” in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, “Kelsey/Glitter Sunny” in The Glitter Force, “Anna” in K Return of Kings, and “Nel” in Bleach.

Roger Craig Smith is a prolific voice actor who has voiced some of the most iconic characters in entertainment.  Over the course of his illustrious career, one of Roger’s notable credits include the voice of “Sonic the Hedgehog” not only in video games, but also in the Disney film series, Wreck-It Ralph, and in Cartoon Network’s animated series, Sonic Boom.  Other notable credits include the voice of “Batman” in the video game Arkham Origins as well as in the DC animated films Batman Ninja and Superman: Red Son, the voice of “Ezio Auditore da Firenze” in the Assassin’s Creed Franchise, and the voice of “Claggor” in Netflix’s award-winning animated series Arcane. Anime fans will know Roger as the voice of “Deidara” from the worldwide hit Naruto, “Shinji Hirako” in Bleach, and “Minoru Okabe” in the blockbuster, Suzume.

Providing voice and full performance capture for several video games, Patricia Summersett is known as the first official voice of “Princess Zelda” in Nintendo Video Games for: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Other top voice credits include Rainbow Six: Siege, Star Wars: Squadrons, and the Assassin’s Creed Franchise. She has also appeared in several films and television series. Patricia was raised in L’anse, MI, and graduated from Houghton High School before pursuing her acting career in L.A. and Montreal.

We’re excited to host Jessi Campbell at the Rozsa Center this Saturday, August 19th at 9:30 P.M. Jessi is a high-energy, likable comedian that brings her relatable stories to the stage. She takes mundane events in her life and turns them into hilarious bits. Traditional stand-up comedy with no bells and whistles needed, Jessi makes crowds laugh with one microphone and a spotlight. She was the Campus Activities Magazine Female Performer of the Year and has performed at over 1,000 colleges nationwide. She has performed all over the world and has two Dry Bar Comedy specials. The Army ROTC Cadets are hosting their annual Orientation Week BBQ on Tuesday, August 22nd @ 2:00pm on the lawn in front of the ROTC building. All new and returning students are welcome to attend and enjoy FREE food. 

Cadets from most MTU majors will be present to discuss their experience in ROTC and answer any questions you may have about participation in the military science program. 

Did you know, participating in ROTC/Military Science as a first or second-year student requires no commitment? ROTC Cadets are students first and can make the decision to complete ROTC up to their third year. Those who choose to complete, can commission as an Army Officer and serve full-time on Active Duty or Part-Time in the National Guard or Army Reserves.
