Summer Service Opportunities

Several community members have reached out to SLI requesting assistance with summer projects. Have some extra time? Give back to the Keweenaw community this summer!

Projects include:

  • Helping a lovely, elderly gentleman and his wife with yard clean up and perhaps some painting projects. He is located in Keweenaw Bay (about 20 minutes south on US 41) and would have all of the tools necessary to complete the work. They are open to any prearranged date and time. He estimated 3-6 volunteers would be ideal for a couple hours of work- more are welcome, but the projects will be finished faster.
  • The Hanka Homestead is preparing to open over Memorial Weekend. In advance of opening, they are hoping to rebuild 300-400 feet of split rail cedar fencing. They are hoping to have a group of 4-5 individuals assist over a few days or perhaps a larger group over a day or two. Supplies will be provided and we can provide work gloves for any volunteers as well.

If you’re interested in supporting either of these projects individually or as a group email us at huskyhelpers@mtu.edu and we can get you in contact!

A new organization focusing on revitalizing our communities is also seeking volunteers for their two summer project days: July 29th and August 12th. These are full days of service from ~8AM-3PM. Breakfast, lunch, a t-shirt, and all necessary supplies are provided. Sign-up is available on GivePulse at the preceding links.

GSG Softball League Registration Open

All are welcome to play as we will have a preseason Softball clinic and Captain’s meeting to go over the rules and techniques of softball.

K-Day Registration

Keep in mind, the person you list as the primary contact for your organization’s registration will be the one receiving all communications.  They will need to keep an eye out for emails during the summer, in case of any changes that are made to K-Day due to any updates we may need to make.

Crowdsourcing Tick Project at MTU

The Genomic Sequencing lab wants ticks from you, your family, and your pets. The goal of this project is to identify the prevalence of tick-borne illnesses in the copper country. Starting May 1st and ending September 30th please bring any ticks you find to the collection boxes on the MTU campus:

1.    U.J. Noblet Forestry Building– Main Entrance

2.    Great Lakes Research Center, 100 Phoenix Dr – Building Lobby

The collection begins May 1st and ends September 30th.

How to remove and preserve ticks

1.    Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible.

2.    Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you cannot remove the mouth easily with tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.

3.    After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

4.    Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of a live tick by

  • Placing it in a sealed bag ziploc bag, multiple ticks from the same location source can be placed in the same bag
  • Bring tick into drop off point within 8 hours or place tick in a sealed bag, in freezer until dropping off at Michigan Tech

5.    Drop off points at MTU:

  • U.J. Noblet Forestry Building– Main Entrance
  • Great Lakes Research Center, 100 Phoenix Dr – Building Lobby

6.    Follow directions at the dropoff site to ensure the tick is properly preserved.

  • And to Meg Pomranka, who served as a volunteer coach with her High School Color Guard team.

We also have two recipients who have received gold-level honors for over 250 service hours completed. Congratulations to:

  • Kaitlyn Brady, who served as a volunteer assistant athletic trainer with Michigan Tech athletics.

K-Day 2023 Registration is OPEN

Ahoy there! Are you ready to set sail? If so, then it’s time to grab your captain’s hat because K-Day Registration is officially open!

Reserve your spot now! Space and resources are limited, so do not delay!  This year’s theme will have you sailing around at K-Day!  Organizations can get creative with this nautical-themed student organization fair!

K-Day, or Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition that will be held on Friday, September 8 beginning at noon. Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music – it’s like a day out at sea!  K-day typically sees 3000-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before registering HERE.

Keep in mind, the person you list as the primary contact for your organization’s registration will be the one receiving all communications.  They will need to keep an eye out for emails during the summer, in case of any changes that are made to K-Day due to any updates we may need to make.

Questions about K-Day can be directed to Leah Joy at rso@mtu or call 906-487-1963.

The Class Tribute program is a great way to honor those recognized, and all proceeds from the program are used to support scholarships for incoming students in the fall.

The deadline to submit a Class Tribute for Spring Commencement is Friday, April 7, 2023.

Call For Submissions: Humanities Media Student Showcase

The humanities department will be holding its first annual media student showcase on April 20th, 2023, designed to celebrate and raise awareness about the media and design work done by students in humanities media courses, by humanities majors, and those in the media production minor. It is often the case within media courses that one moves from project to project, and those projects inevitably remain unseen on a hard drive. The intent of the Media Student Showcase is to shake off the digital dust, bringing greater awareness to excellent design and media work produced in the humanities department each and every semester.

Professional visual designers from the community will join the event, providing applicants the opportunity to seek feedback on their work. A best in show, along with two runners-up awards will be announced during the event. Refreshments will be available.

The deadline to submit is April 7th, 2023. Submission guidelines and criteria can be found on the showcase page, https://www.mtu.edu/humanities/showcase/

Questions may be directed to organizers Tom Adolphs (tcadolph@mtu.edu) and Samantha Canevez (scanevez@mtu.edu)

We look forward to your submissions!

Plastic Film Reycling

In an effort to reduce plastic waste on campus and in the community, MTU’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience has started a new plastic film recycling program! This separate recycling stream allows us to collect a host of stretchy plastics like bags, bubble wrap, and shipping envelopes that would otherwise go in the landfill. Anyone is welcome to use the receptacles for plastic films generated at home or on campus. Bins are located across campus in most major academic and residential buildings.

Through a partnership with Tadych’s Marketplace, the collected plastic goes to Trex, a composite decking manufacturing company, to be made into long-lasting, sustainably sourced decking materials.

Accepted Plastics Include:

Grocery Bags • Ice Bags • Resealable Food Storage Bags • Cereal Box Liners • Case Overwrap • Bread Bags • Newspaper Sleeves • Dry Cleaning Bags • Bubble Wrap • Plastic Shipping Envelopes

All items must be clean, dry, and free of food and organic residue.

For more information and a complete list of acceptable items, visit NexTrex.

HuskyLEAD: Effective Leadership Transitions

Tuesday, March 28th at 6 PM

MUB Alumni Lounge B & C

In Student Leadership and Involvement, we often hear from groups that had a “bad transition” between student organizations leaders. They lack historical knowledge, miss deadlines they weren’t familiar with, and have to spend valuable time recreating what should already exist. Are you looking to ensure your organization’s leadership doesn’t end up in this challenging position?

Join Student Leadership & Involvement Assistant Director, Danielle Meirow, to learn effective strategies for:

  • Retaining digital documents
  • Carrying on consistent relationships with campus partners
  • Sharing necessary information with incoming officers
  • Hosting effective transition meetings

A variety of resources and sample documents will be shared. Time will be provided throughout the workshop for attendees to take action steps on transition planning. It is recommended that multiple organization leaders attend together and that they bring laptops with access to any relevant organizational documents.

A mixture of awesome games with fun audience interactions and nerdtastic trivia. Play! Win prizes! Test your knowledge!

– A translation team with students who read and write Spanish fluently with cultural understanding.

In addition, this video linked here goes more in-depth on these two roles, along with School Swap as a whole.

If you’re interested in joining these teams, reach out to us at schoolswap501c3@gmail.com by March 3rd. We’d love to have you, and letting us know by March 2rd allows us to catch you up to speed and hit the ground running immediately after spring break.

Massive Earthquake in Turkey & Syria Fundraiser

Two massive earthquakes (7.8 and 7.6) struck Turkey & Syria and caused devastating destruction causing more than 45,000 deaths (and estimated to reach +100k). At Tech we have five professors and three graduate students from Turkey and with the support of Dr. Sarah Green, we started a fundraiser through a reliable NGO. Because the destruction was so massive, the recovery will take months, and any support, and awareness is appreciated.
