Seats Available on the USG Winter Break Bus

There are still a few seats available on the Winter Break Bus sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Government.  The bus departs from the Memorial Union Building on Saturday, December 23 at 8:00 AM and travels to East Lansing with stops at St. Ignace, Gaylord, and Clare.  The return bus departs from East Lansing on Saturday, January 13 at 8:00 AM with the same stops along the way.  The cost is $92.75 plus fees; total cost $99.97.

The cost is the same roundtrip or just one way.

Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Holiday Reception

Bring the whole family together and join us at the Rozsa Center to celebrate the season with an afternoon of ornament making, cookie eating, and the Grinch! Together, the Student Entertainment Board and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts are pleased to present a matinee screening of the original animated holiday classic, Dr. Suess’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” followed by a holiday reception to benefit Toys for Tots, this Sunday, December 10, at 2:00 PM, at the Rozsa Center.

This season the Rozsa Center will be a Toys for Tots drop-off location! Please consider bringing an unwrapped toy to donate, and help Toys for Tots spread a message of hope and holiday cheer to less fortunate youngsters in our community.

Volunteers to Decorate for Christmas in Houghton

The City of Houghton is seeking volunteers to help with their Victorian Inspired Christmas celebration on Saturday, December 9th from 4-7pm (see attached). Volunteers will dress up to match the time period and walk around downtown Houghton to create the feel and ambiance of a Victorian Christmas. There will be sleigh-rides, candle dipping, music, and a tree lighting. Volunteers will also receive free food!   

KSO Presents Sinfonia Antartica Saturday

The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra performs Ralph Vaughan Williams’ tragic winter symphony, Sinfonia Antartica, an orchestral celebration of the heroism and tragedy of the ill-fated terra nova Antarctic expedition of 1912. They will also perform a world premiere of Libby Meyer’s Lakeside, a new composition based on her work with the recent Listening to Parks project, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and National Park Service Imagine Your Parks initiative. Please join us on Saturday, December 9, at 7:30 PM at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets for the Sinfonia Antartica concert are on sale now, $19 for adults, $6 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Landscape Music: A Matinee Chamber Music Concert Sunday

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to present a matinee concert of chamber music featuring the works of seven composers celebrating the Landscape, special places and the National Parks. The Landscape Music Concert will be held in the McArdle Theatre on the second floor of Michigan Tech’s Walker Center, on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at 3:00 PM.

The composers whose work will be performed include: Nell Shaw Cohen, Jesse Budel, Stephen Wood, Corinna Hogan, Christina Rusnak, Libby Meyer, and Stephen Lias. Libby Meyer, composer, fiddle player, and Lecturer in Musical Composition and Violin/Viola Performance and Instruction in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, arranged this concert as part of the Landscape Music Composers Network, a group of composers from across the United States whose music engages with landscape, nature, and place. Libby Meyer’s interest in natural soundscapes, conservation of special places and curiosity about the relationship between the arts and the natural world fuel her work. She is a co-founder of the Keweenaw Soundscape Project established to aurally document the Keweenaw region and surrounding lands for ecological, social and artistic value has served as an Artist in Residence at Isle Royale National Park and has written a number of compositions inspired by the landscape. In 2016, Libby and colleagues from Michigan Technological University were awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and National Park Service’s Imagine Your Parks program. The project team recorded soundscapes in the five National Parks on Lake Superior. The results: A visual and sound installation Listening to Parks, is currently on display, through January 22, 2018 in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space. Please visit the Listening to Parks website for more details. And Meyer’s composition Lakescape, created through her work on that project, will be premiered by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, December 9, 2017, as part of the Sinfonia Antartica concert at the Rozsa Center. Christopher Plummer, Libby Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, with artist Steve Brimm, and artists from area schools, open a multimedia and soundscape installation as a part of their Listening to Parks project, with a reception on Saturday, December 2, at 5:00 PM in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space, to explore those questions.Listening to Parks is an Imagine Your Parks project, an immersive installation based on collected images, video, and audio recordings from the Lake Superior National Parks:Keweenaw National Historic ParkIsle Royale National ParkApostle Islands National Lake ShorePictured Rocks National Lake ShoreGrand Portage National Monument.In May, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Park Service (NPS) announced $1,067,500 in support of 50 Imagine Your Parks grants in 27 states, including an award of $20,000 to Michigan Technological University to support Listening to Parks.The installation has been touring sites in the Upper Peninsula region, culminating in this exhibition. Serve901

In March 2018, Michigan Tech will partner with Serve901 in Memphis, Tennessee to combat specific social issues. The trip will be comprised of 18 students, including two staff advisors. Students will apply for the opportunity and pay a $200 deposit to secure their spot. The deposit will be refunded on the first day of the trip. All other expenses are covered.

Applications are open until January 31, 2018, but there will be a priority consideration for those that apply before December 8, 2017. Any remaining spots will be filled after the application deadline.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Workshop

The Pavlis Honors College will be hosting the first of our annual Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Workshops this Wednesday, December 6 from 6-7pm in Fisher 131. Workshop will be led by SURF Coordinator, Will Cantrell.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program offers undergraduate students a $4000 stipend to work for 10 weeks on research on campus in the summer. Applications are open to all Tech undergraduates who have at least one semester remaining after the summer. In order to be eligible for SURF, students must submit their applications by 4pm on January 26, 2018. If you know of students interested in participating in a summer fellowship on campus, please encourage them to attend the workshop.

Interested in developing yourself as a leader? Student Activities offers HuskyLEAD, a leadership development series which stands for Leadership Education Accelerating Development. The HuskyLEAD series focuses on five different leadership competencies: self-awareness, teamwork, communication, ethical practices, and social responsibility.

The HuskyLEAD-Strengths Series will help students learn how to develop and apply their strengths for success in college and beyond. The purpose is to identify and maximize the talent of college students to guide their personal, professional, and leadership development through the use and application of strengths-based sciences.

Literature: Finding it and Reading it

Lauren Movlai, Instruction Librarian, will lead an interactive discussion on identifying excellent resources. This will be followed by a graduate student panel sharing their experiences and recommendations for how to approach finding and reading journal articles.

The workshop will be held in room 243 of the Library on Wednesday, November 29 at 6pm.

Fires in the Mirror

Tech Theatre presents Fires in the Mirror, a play by American playwright, author, actress and professor Anna Deavere Smith. It chronicles the viewpoints of people from tow different communities, Black and Jewish, connected directly and indirectly to the Crown Heights riot which occurred in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in August 1991.

How can these things happen? A child is hit by a car while playing on the sidewalk. In retaliation, a young man is stabbed to death. A community turns inward upon itself, neighbor set against neighbor. Can an out of balance world be set right? Anna Deavere smith interviewed members of Brooklyn’s Crown Heights community and using their own words assembled a retelling of their solemn road from hate and violence to understanding.

Leading Scholars Competition

We are getting ready for our annual Leading Scholars competition and we’re looking for volunteers to help out with some group process type activities again.  We will have about 40 high school seniors visiting on December 3-4 to vie for the chance to receive full scholarships.

The session that we’re in need of volunteers for is called “Leadership in Action,” and the staff volunteers will evaluate students while they participate in the activities.  I will touch base with all volunteers as the event gets closer, but we’d need about 25 staff members to be ready to evaluate at 7:45 AM on Monday, December 4.  The event will wrap-up just before 10:00 AM.  (The events will take place on the ground floor of Wadsworth Hall.)

There are also a few changes we would like to highlight for this year:

Window painting event has been replaced with “Banner Painting”.  The banners will then be hung in business windows in downtown Houghton during January and February.  A major change with this new event is that banners will need to be completed by December 15th in order for businesses to have adequate time to receive and display the banners.  Additional details regarding the event are listed in the rulebook.

Due to declining participation, the interactive statue competition will no longer be a judged event. Organizations wishing to build statues that require participant interaction are encouraged to do so by opting into the category on the month-long statue application. Any questions regarding this change can be directed to bkstatues@mtu.edu.

Literature: Finding it and Reading it

Lauren Movlai, Instruction Librarian, will lead an interactive discussion on identifying excellent resources. This will be followed by a graduate student panel sharing their experiences and recommendations for how to approach finding and reading journal articles.

The workshop will be held in room 243 of the Library on Wednesday, November 29 at 6pm.

Leading Scholars Competition

We are getting ready for our annual Leading Scholars competition and we’re looking for volunteers to help out with some group process type activities again.  We will have about 40 high school seniors visiting on December 3-4 to vie for the chance to receive full scholarships.

The session that we’re in need of volunteers for is called “Leadership in Action,” and the staff volunteers will evaluate students while they participate in the activities.  I will touch base with all volunteers as the event gets closer, but we’d need about 25 staff members to be ready to evaluate at 7:45 AM on Monday, December 4.  The event will wrap-up just before 10:00 AM.  (The events will take place on the ground floor of Wadsworth Hall.)

Due to declining participation, the interactive statue competition will no longer be a judged event. Organizations wishing to build statues that require participant interaction are encouraged to do so by opting into the category on the month-long statue application. Any questions regarding this change can be directed to bkstatues@mtu.edu.

WC 2018 Rulebook

Campus-Wide Survey

The University is conducting a campus-wide survey to find out what it’s like to work, live, and learn at Michigan Tech. The survey – called the Michigan Tech Assessment of Working, Living, and Learning – will help the University better understand the current climate at Michigan Tech, and how all members of our community experience it.

Creating and maintaining a community environment that respects individual needs, abilities, and potential is critically important. The assessment is designed to provide the administration with information about both positive and challenging aspects of life at Michigan Tech. It’s your opportunity to describe your personal experiences, your observations, and to offer suggestions for change that might enhance the campus climate.

The goals of the project are to: 1) identify successful initiatives, 2) uncover any challenges facing members of our community, and 3) develop strategic initiatives to build on the successes and address the challenges.

This research has been reviewed and approved by the Michigan Tech Institutional Review Board. Additional information about the project is available here.

You are encouraged to take the time to answer the questions by going to mtu.edu/worklivelearn. Completing the survey takes an average of 20 to 30 minutes, but it could take longer depending on your responses. All of your answers will remain confidential and the results will be reported in group form only. Chronicle of Higher Education Looking for Short Essays on Winter Breaks

Many students use their winter break for catching up with family and friends.  But have you ever used your winter break in other productive ways, such as preparing for the upcoming semester, getting a head start on your career, or improving the world in some way?  If so, the Chronicle of Higher Education would love to hear from you.  They are looking for short, personal essays – around 300 words – from students about how they have used their winter break in constructive ways.  If you are interested and available to write a short essay by Wednesday, November 15, 2017, please contact Jenn Donovan, director of news and media relations, at jbdonova@mtu.edu.

Superior Wind Symphony Concert

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents a concert by the Superior Wind Symphony, titled “Perfectly Frank,” a celebration of the great conductor for winds, Frank L Battisti. They will perform this Saturday, November 11, at 7:30 PM, in the Rozsa Center.

Frank L. Battisti is conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Director of Wind Ensemble Activities at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts. Under Mr. Battisti’s leadership, the Ensemble has established a national and international reputation for being one of the premiere ensembles of its kind in the United States. It has performed often at music conferences, in live radio concert broadcasts over the National Public Radio (NPR) Network and recorded for Centaur and Golden Crest Records. During the past 40 years Frank L. Battisti has been responsible for commissioning and premiering many works for wind ensemble by distinguished American and foreign composers including Warren Benson, Leslie Bassett, Robert Ceely, John Harbison, Robin Holloway, William Thomas McKinley, Vincent Persichetti, Michael Colgrass, Daniel Pinkham, Gunther Schuller, Robert Selig, Sir Michael Tippett, Ivan Tcherepnin, Robert Ward and Alec Wilder. Critics and colleagues have praised Battisti for his commitment to contemporary music and his outstanding performances.

According to Christianson, “Frank Battisti has been a personal friend and mentor to me for over a decade, including being the very first guest conductor I had here at Tech in my first year of my life as a College Band Director! He gave then, as he has always since: Pointed, helpful information about how to be a more musical conductor and inspiring educator. I was able to go to two workshops with Frank as an instructor this summer, in Frank’s 87th year! I felt more inspired than even before and thought it was time to plan a concert of music that Frank values at the highest level, as a tribute to his friendship and support!  All of the music in this program is by composers or arrangers that are at the top of the Battisti approval list, and almost all of them have been teaching pieces I first studied at Battisti conducting workshops.”

Faculty Present Listening to Parks, an NEA Imagine Your Parks Project

What do you hear when you walk in the woods? What are the natural sounds and rythms of the forest? The lakes? The skies? Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, opened a multimedia and soundscape installation at the Duluth Children’s Museum this week, on Monday, September 25, 2017, in Duluth, MN, as a part of their “Listening to Parks” project, to explore those questions. The exhibit will be on display through October 15. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Park Service (NPS) announced $1,067,500 in support of 50 grants in 27 states, including an award of $20,000 to Michigan Technological University to support Listening to Parks, an Imagine Your Parks project. Visual and sound artists collaborated to create an immersive multimedia installation based on collected images, video, and audio recordings from the Keweenaw National Historic Park, Isle Royale National Park, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The installation will tour to sites in the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan, and then will culminate in an exhibition in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in December. There will be an opening reception on Friday, December 2 from 5:00 -6:30 PM, which is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are M-F 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Fridays. The recorded sounds from this project will also be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra at the Rozsa Center on Saturday, December 9 at 7:30 PM.

discover these special places and experience our great heritage.”  “The ‘Imagine Your Parks’ grants are really helping us celebrate the NPS Centennial and the NEA’s 50th Anniversary with some incredibly diverse and interesting projects that continue to inspire more Americans of all backgrounds to connect with their national parks,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “The grants already awarded are already demonstrating the success of the program through a variety of inspiring projects. A new generation of artists is connecting to national parks through their work, and motivating others to do the same.”

According to Dr. Jared Anderson, Chair, Department of Visual and Performing Arts, “I am very proud to announce that Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, received the first-ever award for Michigan Tech from the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Parks Service as a part of the “Imagine your Parks” initiative.  This project will consist of gathering soundscape recordings from Isle Royale National Park and other National Parks in this region.  The recorded sounds will then be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra.  The sounds will also be integrated into a traveling multi-media art installation that will be presented at various park visitors centers and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in 2017.”

Pistol Club Open Shoot

Due to the range at the SDC being temporarily closed, MTU Pistol Club is temporarily operating at the Portage Lake Sportsman Club. Because of this, we have to limit the number of people to 40 per day due to transportation. We are experimenting with this operation but currently we will work on a first come first serve basis.

We are required to provide tech insured transportation via a shuttle. The shuttle will be located at the lot behind OAP by Public Safety. and will run about every 30 minutes from 4-7 pm this Friday, and 1-4 on our Saturday and Sunday events with a final returning van at 8 and five respectively

We are operating on the following days:

Saturday October 7 1-5

Sunday October 15 1.5

Saturday October 21 1-5

Sunday October 29 1-5

We are unable to transport firearms in Tech Vehicles so if you would like to bring your own fire arm please come before the first shuttle and we will transport your firearm in an range safety officers  vehicle. If you are not comfortable with that then we encourage you to purchase a year long membership at Portage Lake Sportsman Club. For our event we will only allow pistols and .22 rifles.

If you want to bring a personal firearm, you must preregister as only one vehicle will be bringing firearms out there once each way.

All personal vehicles must be left at the library as the pick up spot is for public safety only.

For those of you who are interested at getting a membership, their yearly student membership fee is only $30 if paid in cash and $32 if paid through Pay Pal.

Huskies Pep Band Concert Celebrates “50 Years of Be-Striped Irreverence!”

The Huskies Pep Band presents Scrambling all the Way: 50 Years of Be-striped Irreverence next Friday, October 13, at 7:30 PM in the Rozsa Center. The Huskies Pep Band (HPB) is a Michigan Tech point of pride and one of the most lauded (and loud!) pep bands in the Midwest. Members dressed in “bumble-bee” stripes perform in unscripted and unrestrained glory at concerts, athletic events, parades, and special events all around Houghton, and support Michigan Tech teams on the road as well. The Huskies Pep Band is a nationally-known Division I pep band of nearly 250 members that performs at all home football, basketball, and hockey games. The band was selected as the host band to the WCHA Final Five Tournament in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

What can you expect from the Pep Band “live and In-concert?” According to Director of Bands Michael Christianson, “On this date, or likely some other one 50 years ago, Michigan Technological University’s Director of Bands Don Keranen decided to transform the Huskies Pep Band into a bestriped, scrambling, irreverent, annoying, distracting force for both good (for our athletic teams) and not as good (for the opposing teams). Since then, the HPB has performed at many arenas and stadiums (including some from which they have been banned for creating a “home atmosphere” for Michigan Tech’s teams), learned more than 8 songs, developed the capacity to breathe fire, been a P.E. credit for many movement-challenged students, and reached the age of 50 as a “Scramble” band!”

Christianson adds, “To celebrate, our yearly Pep Band Concert will feature tunes from all 50 years of scramblin’ (as well as several from our brand-new CD, plus photos and videos from many years. Our world-famous HPB Swag will be available for purchase at intermission, and we fully intend to have well-known guests with us for the event, as soon as they make bail. The concert is Friday October 13, there will likely be a ghoulish flavor to the evening…bwahahaha. Actual Quotes: “I didn’t know such sounds were possible!”- Marlee Matlin. “Vertical stripes aren’t always slimming.“- Anna Wintour. “Will there be another taco eating contest?”-Taco Bell”

Tech Theatre presents Steve Martin’s – Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Art or science, what has more power to change the future? Come, have drinks with Einstein and Picasso, at the Lapin Agile, a bar in 1904 Paris, as delightfully imagined by actor, comic, musician, and yes, playwright, Steve Martin. In his first full-length play, Martin puts Picasso and Einstein on a funny and poignant collision-course to drink, laugh, and debate the genius and imagination that inspires both. Members of the audience can even “drink” at the bar! There will be seats at the café tables for a few lucky audience members each night, with refreshments and snacks served as part of the performance. Tech Theatre, Directed by Christopher Plummer, Professor, Visual and Performing Art,  presents Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a thoughtfully comedic look at the power of imagination at the start of the 20^th Century, from the perspective of two giants of their time. The show will run for two weeks, Thursday – Saturday, October 12 – 14, and Wednesday – Friday, October 18 -20, at 7:30 pm in the McArdle Theatre.

A long-running and popular Off-Broadway play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile began with a first reading of the play at Steve Martin’s home. Tom Hanks read the role of Picasso, and Chris Sarandon read Einstein. Following further development, the play opened at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago on October 13, 1993. The show then enjoyed a successful run in Los Angeles and then made its way to New York City. The New York Times wrote, “It’s important to remember that the playwright of Picasso at the Lapin Agile is Steve Martin, stand-up comic, actor, writer, banjo player and something of a genius in his own right. So when big questions are being addressed, you can be sure that a layer of silliness is always in place (and, subversively, a layer of seriousness beneath that).”

 According to Alexandra Walker, Tech Theatre’s stage manager for Lapin Agile, “The play explores the question ‘what is the power of genius?’ As Picasso and Einstein argue over who will be able to change the century more with their work, we come to the conclusion: Both art and science are important, summed up in the words of Freddie, the Lapin Agile bartender/owner Freddie, proposing a toast with his patrons: ‘No movement will be as beautiful as the note across the staff, the line across the paper, or the idea across the mind.’”

In his first full-length play, Martin puts Picasso and Einstein on a funny and poignant collision-course to drink, laugh, and debate the genius and imagination that inspires both. Members of the audience can even “drink” at the bar! There will be seats at the café tables for a few lucky audience members each night, with refreshments and snacks served as part of the performance. Tech Theatre, Directed by Christopher Plummer, Professor, Visual and Performing Art,  presents Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a thoughtfully comedic look at the power of imagination at the start of the 20^th Century, from the perspective of two giants of their time. The show will run for two weeks, Thursday – Saturday, October 12 – 14, and Wednesday – Friday, October 18 -20, at 7:30 pm in the McArdle Theatre.

A long-running and popular Off-Broadway play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile began with a first reading of the play at Steve Martin’s home. Tom Hanks read the role of Picasso, and Chris Sarandon read Einstein. Following further development, the play opened at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago on October 13, 1993. The show then enjoyed a successful run in Los Angeles and then made its way to New York City. The New York Times wrote, “It’s important to remember that the playwright of Picasso at the Lapin Agile is Steve Martin, stand-up comic, actor, writer, banjo player and something of a genius in his own right. So when big questions are being addressed, you can be sure that a layer of silliness is always in place (and, subversively, a layer of seriousness beneath that).”

 According to Alexandra Walker, Tech Theatre’s stage manager for Lapin Agile, “The play explores the question ‘what is the power of genius?’ As Picasso and Einstein argue over who will be able to change the century more with their work, we come to the conclusion: Both art and science are important, summed up in the words of Freddie, the Lapin Agile bartender/owner Freddie, proposing a toast with his patrons: ‘No movement will be as beautiful as the note across the staff, the line across the paper, or the idea across the mind.’”

Tickets are on sale now, $13 for adults, $5 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. •  Michigan Tech-City Shuttle Evening Loop-combines a loop around the MUB/Heights route with a ride along Sharon Avenue to the west Houghton commercial district, returning back along Sharon avenue to the Heights and MUB (Wednesday through Friday; starts 6:45 pm from the Upper Heights to West Houghton with the last loop returning to the Heights at 8:45 pm).
•  Saturday Shuttle-New New New! The University has paired with Lamers Bus Lines to provide free bus service on Saturdays from Daniell Heights to the west Houghton commercial district  (starts noonfrom the Upper Heights to the west Houghton  commercial district approximately every hour with the last loop out at 3pm.  Please note, currently this service is for students and children over the age of 4.).

Fall 2017 Safe Place Ally Training Program

Center for Diversity and Inclusion Registration is now open for the fall 2017 Safe Place Ally Training Program. The Michigan Tech Safe Place Program is a comprehensive resource to better prepare faculty, staff, students and community members to address the needs of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA*).

The program addresses a wide range of terms that LGBTQIA* students use to define themselves, unpacks the complicated notions of identity in relation to sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, addresses issues that LGBTQIA* students often deal with during the coming out process and examines concerns that LGBTQIA* students face both in and out of the classroom.

Safe Place training also explores the many ways that you can work toward creating more safe, inclusive and affirming spaces and environments on campus.

This Fall we’re also offering sessions for students only on Sunday November 5th, 2017 from 3-5pm (steps 1&2) and Sunday November 12th, 2017 from 3-5pm (steps 3&4) – registration for these students only dates or other open campus dates, times, and locations are listed on the Safe Place webpage, where you must register for the dates of  your choosing.

Pistol Club Open Shoot

Due to the range at the SDC being temporarily closed, MTU Pistol Club is temporarily operating at the Portage Lake Sportsman Club. Because of this, we have to limit the number of people to 40 per day due to transportation. We are experimenting with this operation but currently we will work on a first come first serve basis.

We are required to provide tech insured transportation via a shuttle. The shuttle will be located at the lot behind OAP by Public Safety. and will run about every 30 minutes from 4-7 pm this Friday, and 1-4 on our Saturday and Sunday events with a final returning van at 8 and five respectively

We are operating on the following days:

Saturday October 7 1-5

Sunday October 15 1.5

Saturday October 21 1-5

Sunday October 29 1-5

We are unable to transport firearms in Tech Vehicles so if you would like to bring your own fire arm please come before the first shuttle and we will transport your firearm in an range safety officers  vehicle. If you are not comfortable with that then we encourage you to purchase a year long membership at Portage Lake Sportsman Club. For our event we will only allow pistols and .22 rifles.

If you want to bring a personal firearm, you must preregister as only one vehicle will be bringing firearms out there once each way.

All personal vehicles must be left at the library as the pick up spot is for public safety only.

For those of you who are interested at getting a membership, their yearly student membership fee is only $30 if paid in cash and $32 if paid through Pay Pal.

Huskies Pep Band Concert Celebrates “50 Years of Be-Striped Irreverence!”

The Huskies Pep Band presents Scrambling all the Way: 50 Years of Be-striped Irreverence next Friday, October 13, at 7:30 PM in the Rozsa Center. The Huskies Pep Band (HPB) is a Michigan Tech point of pride and one of the most lauded (and loud!) pep bands in the Midwest. Members dressed in “bumble-bee” stripes perform in unscripted and unrestrained glory at concerts, athletic events, parades, and special events all around Houghton, and support Michigan Tech teams on the road as well. The Huskies Pep Band is a nationally-known Division I pep band of nearly 250 members that performs at all home football, basketball, and hockey games. The band was selected as the host band to the WCHA Final Five Tournament in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

What can you expect from the Pep Band “live and In-concert?” According to Director of Bands Michael Christianson, “On this date, or likely some other one 50 years ago, Michigan Technological University’s Director of Bands Don Keranen decided to transform the Huskies Pep Band into a bestriped, scrambling, irreverent, annoying, distracting force for both good (for our athletic teams) and not as good (for the opposing teams). Since then, the HPB has performed at many arenas and stadiums (including some from which they have been banned for creating a “home atmosphere” for Michigan Tech’s teams), learned more than 8 songs, developed the capacity to breathe fire, been a P.E. credit for many movement-challenged students, and reached the age of 50 as a “Scramble” band!”

Christianson adds, “To celebrate, our yearly Pep Band Concert will feature tunes from all 50 years of scramblin’ (as well as several from our brand-new CD, plus photos and videos from many years. Our world-famous HPB Swag will be available for purchase at intermission, and we fully intend to have well-known guests with us for the event, as soon as they make bail. The concert is Friday October 13, there will likely be a ghoulish flavor to the evening…bwahahaha. To encourage people to donate funds to agencies that are helping people recover, Mayra Sanchez Morgan, Molly Cavaleri, and Kathy Halvorsen are issuing a challenge to all Michigan Tech schools, student organization, and departments from the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum to the William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning.

The Michigan Tech group, school, or department that gives the highest total of combined individual donations by October 15th at 5:00 pm EDT to help in regional disaster response will receive a free La Cantina Restaurant lunch for all their donors on campus.

PUSH Physical Theatre

“It’s untheatre. Intense athleticism, gravity-defying acrobatics,and soulful artistry – award-winning PUSH Physical Theatre, the genre-defining masters of physical storytelling, express what it means to be human: the joy and sorrow, humor and tragedy, the big questions and the simple things.”

In an appropriately dark celebration of Halloween, the Rozsa Center is bringing Push Physical Theatre’s production of Dracula to Houghton on October 21, at 7:30 PM. Attached is their press kit which gives a little more background on the ensemble. I will forward more details in a full press release about Dracula in the upcoming weeks, but wanted to send an advance teaser now that we have begun our general publicity for the show. Faculty Present Listening to Parks, an NEA Imagine Your Parks Project

What do you hear when you walk in the woods? What are the natural sounds and rythms of the forest? The lakes? The skies? Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, opened a multimedia and soundscape installation at the Duluth Children’s Museum this week, on Monday, September 25, 2017, in Duluth, MN, as a part of their “Listening to Parks” project, to explore those questions. The exhibit will be on display through October 15. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Park Service (NPS) announced $1,067,500 in support of 50 grants in 27 states, including an award of $20,000 to Michigan Technological University to support Listening to Parks, an Imagine Your Parks project. Visual and sound artists collaborated to create an immersive multimedia installation based on collected images, video, and audio recordings from the Keweenaw National Historic Park, Isle Royale National Park, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The installation will tour to sites in the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan, and then will culminate in an exhibition in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in December. There will be an opening reception on Friday, December 2 from 5:00 -6:30 PM, which is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are M-F 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM and 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Fridays. The recorded sounds from this project will also be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra at the Rozsa Center on Saturday, December 9 at 7:30 PM.

NEA Chairman Jane Chu says “As part of the NEA’s 50th anniversary, this year we are celebrating the magnificence of America’s national cultural treasures through art, the Imagine Your Parks grant program unites our mission with the National Park Service by connecting art projects with the natural, historic and cultural settings of the National Park System and will inspire a new generation to

discover these special places and experience our great heritage.”  “The ‘Imagine Your Parks’ grants are really helping us celebrate the NPS Centennial and the NEA’s 50th Anniversary with some incredibly diverse and interesting projects that continue to inspire more Americans of all backgrounds to connect with their national parks,” said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “The grants already awarded are already demonstrating the success of the program through a variety of inspiring projects. A new generation of artists is connecting to national parks through their work, and motivating others to do the same.”

According to Dr. Jared Anderson, Chair, Department of Visual and Performing Arts, “I am very proud to announce that Christopher Plummer, Elizabeth Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, received the first-ever award for Michigan Tech from the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Parks Service as a part of the “Imagine your Parks” initiative.  This project will consist of gathering soundscape recordings from Isle Royale National Park and other National Parks in this region.  The recorded sounds will then be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra.  The sounds will also be integrated into a traveling multi-media art installation that will be presented at various park visitors centers and the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in 2017.”
