Music-O-Rama!

Please join us for Music-O-Rama, an annual musical variety concert, celebrating the diversity, history, and variety of music at Michigan Tech. Performers from many of the major Michigan Tech music ensembles: Jazz Lab Band, Superior Wind Symphony, conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers, and Michigan Tech Concert Choir; will appear throughout the hall, playing music from around the globe. The Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents Music-O-Rama on Saturday, October 5, at 7:30 PM in the Rozsa Center.

Do you have an innovative idea or an innovation that you want to protect and yet promote?  How do you know if someone hasn’t already developed something similar? How can you protect your idea while promoting your innovation, completing customer discovery, and raising capital at the same time?  If you would like to learn more about intellectual property as a business tool, please join us for Protect Your Innovation, a Husky Innovate workshop.

We will discuss the fundamentals of intellectual property such as patents, trademarks, licensing, and trade secrets, including how to initiate a prior art discovery with resources available at the J. Robert Van Pelt and John Ruanne Opie Library. The workshop will start with an introduction into the practical considerations and trade-offs involved in protecting your idea and how intellectual property protections can be used as a tool to develop your innovation.

Michigan Technological University’s own IP expert, Licensed Patent Agent and Associate Vice President for Research Administration Jim Baker, and local MTEC’s SmartZone CEO Dan Jamison will guide the conversation with compelling scenarios and be available for questions throughout the event. Annelise Doll will provide an overview of US Patent and Trademark Office resources available at the local Patent and Trademark Resource Center.


Idea Pitch Competition

Idea Pitch Competition

You’ve kicked around that great idea of yours for a while and want to pitch it.  Now is your chance! The Idea Pitch Competition gives students a chance to take their ideas live and do just that. Students have two minutes to share their favorite innovation and/or disruptive idea in an interactive community setting. Present alone or with a team of up to two people. A judges panel comprised of community members will ask questions and provide feedback after your pitch. Top teams will be awarded cash prizes.

There will be a 6 p.m. pre-pitch meet-and-greet reception in the GLRC 201 lobby to precede the pitch competition, which will run from 7- 9 p.m..

Event Name: The Four Wheelers of Michigan Tech Fall Mud Bog

Location: Range Snowmobile Club

Saturday, October 5, registration starts at 9:00 am, MUD FLIES AT NOON. Held at the Range Snowmobile Club.

Spectator admission is $5 per person, vehicle registration is $15 per class. There are classes for stock vehicles, ATVs, SXSx, snowmobiles, heavily modified, and more! Anyone 16 years of age and over can enter for a chance to win prizes. Food and drinks will be sold at the event.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly Upper Michigan.

Muck Run

Snapchat Takeover

University Marketing and Communications is looking for responsible and outgoing students, faculty or staff willing to run a Snapchat takeover. The benefit to you? Raising awareness about Michigan Tech and about your program, organization, research or department.
University Snapchat Coordinator Ben Jaszczak works with campus groups to organize awareness-raising Snapchat takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With more than 2,000 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach undergraduate and prospective students.
We’ve had students and research groups run takeovers in other countries through IPS, promote Enterprise competitions with the Concrete Canoe team, share their work with Summer Youth Programs, promote visiting speakers and much more.
To run a Snapchat takeover, all you need to do is identify who will run the takeover and choose a time slot of 1-3 days where they can highlight your program, research, project or event. With that information, contact us at video@mtu.edu to schedule your takeover.

POW/MIA Memorial 5K

Join the TSgt. Robert E. LaMotte Squadron in their annual POW/MIA 5k run on October 5th to raise awareness for all past, present, and future POW/MIAs and the sacrifices made for our country. All proceeds go to the Hubbell VFW to help local veterans.

Be at the ROTC building at MTU at 10:00AM on Saturday, October 5th to start the run! Registration is $20, and the first 50 registrants will receive a free t-shirt. Registration can be done early through the link on our Facebook page (@mtuaas), or at the door on the 5th. There will be prizes and some speakers from the Hubbell VFW!

Expanded Overnight Study Space in the Library

All of the library’s second floor public space is now available for overnight study! Students have asked and we listened. The expansion of the library’s 24-hour study space allows students overnight access to 7 group study rooms, 44 computers, two printers, and 4 additional restrooms. The entrances to the overnight space will remain the same, either through the Rekhi bridge entrance or the overnight west entrance of the library using a valid Husky ID card.

Michigan Tech Recreation Looking for Officials & Lifeguards

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech Recreation Services is hiring for the 2019-2020 calendar year. Current open positions include Lifeguard, Intramural Official, Climbing Wall Staff, Nordic Ski Wax Techs, and OAP event staff.

Recreational Services is looking to hire lifeguards for the Student Development Complex pool. General responsibilities include monitoring activities in and around the pool area, including practicing preventative lifeguarding by consistently enforcing rules and regulations. Potential applicants must be at least 15 years of age and have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR certification.

Michigan Tech is also looking for intramural officials. Sports officials are responsible for officiating intramural events for all levels of competition. Officials will be expected to achieve a level of competence in their scheduled sports. Further, they are to comply with all the policies and procedures of the Intramural-Recreational Sports Services office.

Finally, the Outdoor Adventure Program is looking for staff members for the upcoming academic year. Climbing Wall staff must be belay certified or have previous experience belaying at indoor climbing gyms or outdoors. Nordic Ski Wax Techs should have previous Nordic Ski experience, including waxing and sizing for users. General event staff will assist with a variety of OAP events including log rolling, rock climbing, youth events, and special events. Previous experience working in outdoor recreation is preferred, but not required. Specific skills may be required depending on the position, including the climbing wall and ski waxing.

All applicants must be able to work independently, manage risk, and enforce policies in a fair and consistent manner. Interested applicants to all positions may apply here.

Homecoming Cardboard Boat Races are Today!

Come watch Huskies use the force to stay afloat! Races start at 4 PM at the Houghton Waterfront Park. There is a free shuttle from the MUB and the SDC to the waterfront and back starting at 3 PM. You may even see some special guests in a boat this year, so come on out and celebrate Homecoming!


Homecoming Tailgate

Join us for the Homecoming Tailgate tomorrow, Saturday, September 28 from 11 AM – 1 PM. There will be free food and drinks and a cornhole tournament. Students get in for free with your HuskyCard and anyone else with a game ticket is welcome!


Do It For Daniel Movie

Hosted by Student Health and Wellness, “Do It For Daniel” is a film that documents Daniel Olson’s story. It was created to educate people about the impact of depression, anxiety and mental illness.

Through education, and with your help, the goal is to get this documentary into every high school in the United States and all channels, so we can stop the stigma.

Jeff Olson, Daniel’s father, will be on Michigan Tech’s campus speaking about and sharing this documentary. The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, (Sept.17) in Fisher 135.

At the center of every circus rests a 42ft ring full of thrills, laughs and excitement. 42FT – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels, is the latest invention from the creative minds of Cirque Mechanics. The company dares us to leap into the circus ring and experience the timelessness of this evolving art form. The show’s unique mechanical interpretation of the traditional, and its story full of the lore of the historic one-ring circus, create a welcoming place, like a big top, where we can be amazed. The action in 42FT is full of theatricality and a modern sensibility, showcasing a galloping mechanical metal horse and a rotating tent frame for strongmen, acrobats and aerialists. The Tech Trails Need Your Help!

 

Invasive Emerald Ash Borer have caused extensive damage to the ash tree population on the Tech Trails, leaving behind dead trees which create a hole in the canopy allowing invasive shrub species to flourish and stunt native growth. Michigan Tech has received funding through the US-Forest Service/GLRI to plant native trees in areas along ski trails with the greatest loss of ash overstory. Young red maple, northern white cedar, white pine, red-osier dogwood, yellow birch, high bush cranberry, and pussy willow trees will help reestablish the tree cover in areas once dominated by ash and preserve the beauty of the trails for future users. Student and community volunteers will be planting the young trees on September 27, 28 & 29.

Michigan Tech invites you to help preserve the beauty of the Tech Trails and give back to your community. All are welcome to assist as they are able. Stop by the Tech Trails ready to plant! No experience required! Student coordinators will be present to organize volunteers. Work will involve digging, planting, weeding, and mulching. Please dress in long pants, close-toed shoes, and bring a shovel if you are able! Gloves, water, and snacks are recommended.

Discussion: Mental Illness & Its Effects on Families

 

Mental Illness and its effects on families will be discussed on Thursday, October 2, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the J.R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library, East Reading Room on Michigan
Technological University campus.
The event will include showing scenes from Coming Up For Air, a family drama filmed in Michigan that premiered the end of September. The movie takes audiences on an all too common journey highlighting the importance of mental health care and the pressures that are put upon the student to succeed. The producer, Roger Rapport, will be available to answer questions about the making of the movie. A panel of local mental health professionals will talk about local services, treatment options and statistics, as well as answer audience questions. The goals of the event are to increase awareness, dialogue and connection, and decrease stigma.
No cost to attend.

Expanded Overnight Study Space in the Library

All of the library’s second floor public space is now available for overnight study! Students have asked and we listened. The expansion of the library’s 24-hour study space allows students overnight access to 7 group study rooms, 44 computers, two printers, and 4 additional restrooms. The entrances to the overnight space will remain the same, either through the Rekhi bridge entrance or the overnight west entrance of the library using a valid Husky ID card.

Glow in the Dark Disc Golf Tournament

 


Event Name: Inaugural Glow in the Dark Disc Golf Tournament
Host: Outdoor Adventure Program and MTU Disc Golf Club
Date: Saturday, September 21

This Saturday, September 21, the Outdoor Adventure Program and MTU Disc Golf Club will host their inaugural glow in the dark disc golf tournament. This tournament is open to the public and students. It will be competed on a temporary 9-hole course constructed on the Michigan Tech athletic fields surrounding the SDC. In addition to playing disc golf at night on a new course, MVP has provided player packs that include a glow driver, glow putter, towel, and other accessories.

Prizes will be provided for the three highest finishers. First place will receive an MVP Pro Black Basket and 10 discs. Second place will receive an MVP banner and 10 discs, while 3rd place will receive a collection of 5 discs.

Do It For Daniel Movie

 

Tuesday September 27, 5:30PM in Fisher 135

Hosted by Student Health and Wellness, “Do It For Daniel” is a film that documents Daniel Olson’s story. It was created to educate people about the impact of depression, anxiety and mental illness.

Through education, and with your help, the goal is to get this documentary into every high school in the United States and all channels, so we can stop the stigma.

Jeff Olson, Daniel’s father, will be on Michigan Tech’s campus speaking about and sharing this documentary. The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, (Sept.17) in Fisher 135.


Evening with Industry

The Tech Trails Need Your Help!

 

Invasive Emerald Ash Borer have caused extensive damage to the ash tree population on the Tech Trails, leaving behind dead trees which create a hole in the canopy allowing invasive shrub species to flourish and stunt native growth. Michigan Tech has received funding through the US-Forest Service/GLRI to plant native trees in areas along ski trails with the greatest loss of ash overstory. Young red maple, northern white cedar, white pine, red-osier dogwood, yellow birch, high bush cranberry, and pussy willow trees will help reestablish the tree cover in areas once dominated by ash and preserve the beauty of the trails for future users. Student and community volunteers will be planting the young trees on September 27, 28 & 29.

Michigan Tech invites you to help preserve the beauty of the Tech Trails and give back to your community. All are welcome to assist as they are able. Stop by the Tech Trails ready to plant! No experience required! Student coordinators will be present to organize volunteers. Work will involve digging, planting, weeding, and mulching. Please dress in long pants, close-toed shoes, and bring a shovel if you are able! Gloves, water, and snacks are recommended.

Snapchat Takeover

University Marketing and Communications is looking for responsible and outgoing students, faculty or staff willing to run a Snapchat takeover. The benefit to you? Raising awareness about Michigan Tech and about your program, organization, research or department.
University Snapchat Coordinator Ben Jaszczak works with campus groups to organize awareness-raising Snapchat takeovers targeted to current and future Huskies. With more than 2,000 followers, our Snapchat account is a great way to reach undergraduate and prospective students.
We’ve had students and research groups run takeovers in other countries through IPS, promote Enterprise competitions with the Concrete Canoe team, share their work with Summer Youth Programs, promote visiting speakers and much more.
To run a Snapchat takeover, all you need to do is identify who will run the takeover and choose a time slot of 1-3 days where they can highlight your program, research, project or event. With that information, contact us at video@mtu.edu to schedule your takeover.

The Four Wheelers of Michigan Tech Fall Mud Bog

Event Name: The Four Wheelers of Michigan Tech Fall Mud Bog

Location: Range Snowmobile Club

Saturday, October 5, registration starts at 9:00 am, MUD FLIES AT NOON. Held at the Range Snowmobile Club.

Spectator admission is $5 per person, vehicle registration is $15 per class. There are classes for stock vehicles, ATVs, SXSx, snowmobiles, heavily modified, and more! Anyone 16 years of age and over can enter for a chance to win prizes. Food and drinks will be sold at the event.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly Upper Michigan.

POW/MIA Memorial 5K

Join the TSgt. Robert E. LaMotte Squadron in their annual POW/MIA 5k run on October 5th to raise awareness for all past, present, and future POW/MIAs and the sacrifices made for our country. All proceeds go to the Hubbell VFW to help local veterans.

Be at the ROTC building at MTU at 10:00AM on Saturday, October 5th to start the run! Registration is $20, and the first 50 registrants will receive a free t-shirt. Registration can be done early through the link on our Facebook page (@mtuaas), or at the door on the 5th. There will be prizes and some speakers from the Hubbell VFW!

Welcome Week is an on-campus experience that kick-starts every fall semester.  This tradition is designed to complement the Orientation experience, and provide opportunities to enhance academic and personal success for Tech students.  The week is jam packed with social activities, food, entertainment, and much more!

The Keweenaw Color Run is BACK!

Grab a friend! Invite your co-workers! Get your family excited! Let everyone know that The Keweenaw Color Run is back! Join the Keweenaw Young Professionals on September 8th, 2019 for a fun, untimed walk/run event for the whole office and family. During this five-kilometer run, participants will be blasted head to toe in different colored powders. Not only will participants get more colorful throughout the race, but each person will be provided with a color packet to kick off the race.

KCR Runners vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, The Keweenaw Color Run is an event for everyone! This event is designed to unite the diverse cultures and identities of the Upper Peninsula communities. Our goal is to get you out of your office, or home, surrounded by family and friends walking or running to a healthier us.

You’ve gotten all settled in at Michigan Tech for the year and are about to start classes. Now what?  It’s time for Welcome Week!  Every year, new and returning students are welcomed back to campus with this annual tradition that will get everyone into the Husky Spirit.

Welcome Week is an on-campus experience that kick-starts every fall semester.  This tradition is designed to complement the Orientation experience, and provide opportunities to enhance academic and personal success for Tech students.  The week is jam packed with social activities, food, entertainment, and much more!

On Saturday, August 31st from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the annual Welcome Week event, An Afternoon on the Town, will take place. 

 An Afternoon on the Town is a Michigan Tech event that invites local businesses/services to welcome our students and show them what they have to offer. Starting on campus, down College Avenue, and throughout the downtown Houghton area, there will be music, refreshments, giveaways, and prizes for student participants.

Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music.  Kday typically sees 3500-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before registering HERE.

Grab a friend! Invite your co-workers! Get your family excited! Let everyone know that The Keweenaw Color Run is back! Join the Keweenaw Young Professionals on September 8th, 2019 for a fun, untimed walk/run event for the whole office and family. During this five-kilometer run, participants will be blasted head to toe in different colored powders. Not only will participants get more colorful throughout the race, but each person will be provided with a color packet to kick off the race.

KCR Runners vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, The Keweenaw Color Run is an event for everyone! This event is designed to unite the diverse cultures and identities of the Upper Peninsula communities. Our goal is to get you out of your office, or home, surrounded by family and friends walking or running to a healthier us.

Mandal is an Atlanta-based stand-up comedian, writer, and actor. He is known for his energetic performances and absurd sense of humor. He is the cohost for Clown School, a podcast about life’s absurdities. He has opened for comedians such as Tig Notaro, Jamie Lee, and Donnell Rawlings. He has also performed at the Orlando Indie Comedy Festival, Memphis Comedy Festival, Nashville Comedy Festival and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival.

Summer Puppet Workshops

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts announces SUMMER PUPPET WORKSHOPS offered through The Puppet Project, August 12 – 17.  The Puppet Project is an initiative to introduce and establish the art of puppetry into our local culture through education and performances.  The workshops are offered by Trish Helsel, Associate Professor of Theatre, Michigan Technological University.  Register now at www.buyhuskiestickets.com to learn how to make and manipulate puppets.

The SDC Summer Building Schedule

The SDC summer building schedule is now available. Summer hours will begin now through Sunday, August 25, 2019.

NOTE: The schedule pdf now contains a second page highlighting all open rec times in the SDC including these areas/activities: Fitness Center, locker rooms, multipurpose courts, indoor track, racquetball courts, ice arena public skating, OAP high ropes course, adult lap swim (no dive boards), open swim (4 lap lanes available), family swim (no lap lanes) and family swim/log rolling (no lap lanes).

Dates to remember:

August 5 – September 2 Both pools will be CLOSED for mechanical repairs and general maintenance. They are scheduled to reopen Tuesday, September 3.

K-Day Registration

KDay Registration is open, eh! Reserve your spot now if you haven’t already!  Space and resources are limited, so do not delay!  The deadline to register is September 3 at NOON.  
KDay, or Keweenaw Day, is an annual tradition that will be held on Friday, September 6 beginning at noon. Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music.  Kday typically sees 3500-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before registering HERE.

The Keweenaw Color Run is BACK!

Grab a friend! Invite your co-workers! Get your family excited! Let everyone know that The Keweenaw Color Run is back! Join the Keweenaw Young Professionals on September 8th, 2019 for a fun, untimed walk/run event for the whole office and family. During this five-kilometer run, participants will be blasted head to toe in different colored powders. Not only will participants get more colorful throughout the race, but each person will be provided with a color packet to kick off the race.

KCR Runners vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, The Keweenaw Color Run is an event for everyone! This event is designed to unite the diverse cultures and identities of the Upper Peninsula communities. Our goal is to get you out of your office, or home, surrounded by family and friends walking or running to a healthier us.

An Afternoon on the Town

On Saturday, August 31st from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the annual Welcome Week event, An Afternoon on the Town, will take place. 

 An Afternoon on the Town is a Michigan Tech event that invites local businesses/services to welcome our students and show them what they have to offer. Starting on campus, down College Avenue, and throughout the downtown Houghton area, there will be music, refreshments, giveaways, and prizes for student participants.

Summer Puppet Workshops

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts announces SUMMER PUPPET WORKSHOPS offered through The Puppet Project, August 12 – 17.  The Puppet Project is an initiative to introduce and establish the art of puppetry into our local culture through education and performances.  The workshops are offered by Trish Helsel, Associate Professor of Theatre, Michigan Technological University.  Register now at www.buyhuskiestickets.com to learn how to make and manipulate puppets.

Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise

Student Leadership & Involvement will be sponsoring a Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise on Lake Superior aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV.  The event will take place on Friday, August 9, 2019.  The bus to Copper Harbor will board at 6:00 pm in front of the Memorial Union Building, and is expected to return by 11:00 pm.

Sign up now in the Student Leadership & Involvement office, MUB 112.  Our hours are 8 am – 4 pm weekdays.  The cost of the event is $5.00.  You must sign up and pay cash in person and present your student ID.  Seats are limited, so do not delay!  Any questions, call Student Leadership & Involvement at 906-487-1963 or email activities@mtu.edu.
