1. Khana Khazana Features Indian Cuisine

Khana Khazana will feature Indian food this Friday, February 28, located in the Memorial Union Building (MUB) from 11:00 AM- 2:00 PM. The cooks, Jaswanth Kalavagadda, and Abdul Qadeer, will cook Coconut Chicken Curry, a mild buttery curried chicken simmered in coconut milk, onions and tomatoes that makes mouthwatering gravy with Indian spices; Bread Pudding, a desert of fried bread slices soaked in hot milk with spices including saffron and cardamom; and Onion Fritters, a spicy crispy Indian snack made of seasoned onions dipped into a flour mixture and fried until golden color.

We will start serving at 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The whole meal is $6.95 and $2.50 for one side.

2. Snowshoeing Event at Canyon Falls

The Outdoor Adventure Program is having a snowshoeing event at Canyon Falls this upcoming Saturday, March 1. Participants will leave the Outdoor Adventure Program (207 East St. Across the street from the Library) at 1:00 pm and should return around 5:30 pm. Cost is $10 per person and sign up is at the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP).

3. Women’s Leadership Mentoring Opportunity

Interested in mentoring? Applications are now open for the 2014-2015 Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP). Michigan Tech female undergraduates are invited to apply for the one-year program which pairs them with a middle school girl from the local community to focus on leadership development. Applications are due Monday, March 17.

This week Film Board is showing Gravity in Fisher 135. It will be shown on Friday, February 28 and Saturday, March 1 at 6:00, 8:30, and 11:00 pm. Special 2 day event highlighting the many facets of protein scientists at Michigan Tech on Wednesday, March 5 from noon-1:00 pm and Friday, March 7 from 11:00 am- 1:00 pm.

12. Daily Bull Holds Creativity Contest

Calling all funny people! In keeping with its mission to boost readership, membership, and community involvement, Michigan Tech’s satirical entertainment press is hosting a creativity contest. Submissions of all original humorous or amusing content is encouraged — if it makes you chuckle, send it our way!

There will be four categories: comics, articles, memes/Photo Shopped funnies, and puzzles/brain teasers. Winners will be chosen from each category to receive a prize and at least temporary glory. Think outside the box. Make a word search with a crazy theme, write a goofy article, or draw an abstract chicken. The Daily Bull looks forward to hearing from people all over the spectrum.

8. Khana Khazana Serves Iranian Food to Benefit Children

Khana Khazana, a weekly international lunch cooked and served by international students, will feature Iranian food this Friday. Proceeds will go to benefit children living in poverty in Iran, to help them stay in school.  Aref Majdara, Amir Zandnia, Sara Alian and the Iranian community at Michigan Tech will cook kuku sabzi, which is an aromatic quiche filled with fresh herbs and greens; chicken kabob and ranginak, a healthy and tasty dessert from the southern region of Iran.

Khana Khazana is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Food Court. A full meal costs $6.95 and includes a fountain soda. Individual items are available for $2.50. A vegetarian alternative is available.

1. Khana Khazana Returns with Syrian Food

Khana Khazana, a weekly international lunch cooked and served by international students, will offer Syrian food this Friday from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Union Food Court.

Roba Bdeir, a Syrian PhD student in biochemistry and molecular biology will cook dawood basha, Syrian meatballs in a tomato-herb sauce with onions, chickpeas and nuts; moutabal, made from flame-grilled eggplant mashed with tahini and yogurt and served with pita bread; and riz b-haleeb, a rice pudding made with rosewater and pistachios, topped with coconut.

A full meal costs $7 and includes a fountain drink. Individual entrees cost $2.50 each. Vegetarian alternatives are available

5. 2014 Undergraduate Research Expo Abstract Submission Deadline Extended

The Michigan Tech Honors Institute is offering one more chance for students to submit abstracts for the 2014 Undergraduate Research Expo. We would like to invite all undergraduate researchers from every department to submit an abstract for research to be presented at the expo, which will give researchers a chance to present posters describing completed or ongoing research and receive feedback from faculty judges. Not only will this event be an excellent learning experience for presenters, but it will also showcase the undergraduate research that is happening at Michigan Tech. The expo will be held in the Rosza Lobby during Spring Preview Weekend (March 21) when visiting high school students will be able to see the exciting opportunities available to them at Michigan Tech.

The Honors Institute has been working closely with the Vice President of Research and the Undergraduate Admissions Office to make this event possible, and hopes undergraduate researchers will take advantage of this valuable experience. Printing of posters will be sponsored up to $25. For directions for poster design, please visit tinyurl.com/UREposter2014. Prizes of $200, $150, and $100 will be awarded to the best 3 posters, as chosen by faculty judges.

Abstracts will need to include presenter name, e-mail address, class, college/school, department, and faculty advisor’s name. The body of the abstract should include a title, the names of the authors, an introduction, a description of the materials and methods, the results of the completed or ongoing research, and any acknowledgements. The submission deadline has been extended to Sunday, February 16 at 11:59 pm. Abstracts will be reviewed by Research Expo staff, and a confirmation of acceptance will be sent by February 24.

If you are looking for a community service opportunity and/or for something fun to do, the Michigan Tech Preschool would like to invite you and/or your organization to participate in our upcoming Cabin Fever Carnival fund raising event as event volunteers. This event is in the MUB Ballroom and features Mind Trekkers, a snack bar, bake sale, balloons, activities like face painting, a silent auction, and games where children can earn carnival prizes.

We need volunteers mainly to set-up, supervise games and activities, serve food, and to tear down the event afterwards.

If you or your organization can participate, please get back to me by February 17th with your information and/or a list of names/number of volunteers your organization can commit to one or more shifts. We will need about 30 total volunteers for each event shift and about 10 each for set-up and tear-down.

2. American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR Certification Available

Earn your American Red Cross Certification in this 5-day training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. Certification includes Lifeguard and CPR certification and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by March 2, 2014 (documentation required), be able to swim 300 yards without stopping and tread water, with legs only, for 2 minutes. Class size is limited and the deadline to register is February 7.

6. Parade of Nations Seeking 25th Anniversary Volunteers

Since 1989, the campuses of Michigan Tech and Finlandia and surrounding cities have celebrated the cultural richness of our community with an annual Parade of Nations and Multicultural Festival. The Parade of Nations strives to promote worldwide culture and national awareness to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through an annual event that includes a parade and multicultural festival.The 2014 celebration scheduled for Septempber 13, will mark the 25th year of this multicultural event, and the Parade of Nations planning committee is looking for faculty, staff and students interested in helping plan and coordinate the weeklong festivities.

“We need passionate individuals who are excited about promoting our rich multicultural heritage to join this year’s special projects committee,” said Darnishia Slade, planning committee chair. “We need your help to make the 25th Parade of Nations and Multicultural Festival the biggest and best yet.”

Please take the time to download the new “Just in Case” app for Michigan Tech students!  This app was designed as a mechanism to get you connected to resources in a time of need. If you do not have a smart device the information is accessible by visiting the mobile website.  Our hope is that this app allows students quick access to the contact and resource information that they need when they are feeling overwhelmed, worried about a friend, have feelings of hurting themselves or someone else, or are looking for sexual assault resources.

Please help us spread the word to keep you and your fellow Huskies safe and take the steps to download this app to your phone so that you too can reach out to resources if the need ever arises.

9. MedLife Brings Tanzania Presentor, Terry Mulligan, to Present on MedLife in Africa

On Thursday, February 13, MedLife at Tech will have the honor of welcoming the MedLife Tanzania Program Director, Terry Mulligan, to our campus.

11. CopperDog Volunteers Needed

Are you looking for a way to beat the mid-winter blahs and enjoy some fresh air in the pristine Keweenaw back country? Here’s your chance!

The CopperDog 150 is a professional sled dog race that travels from Calumet to Copper Harbor and back over three days. The event runs from February 28-March 2, and requires hundreds of volunteers. Most jobs only require a few hours of your time, and you are sure to have a blast.

The reputation of the CopperDog Volunteer has spread all through out the sport of dogsled racing. When asked for feedback on their visit to the Keweenaw, musher after musher comments on the hospitality and enthusiasm of CopperDog 150 volunteers. You are what make this race so successful!

We strongly encourage all volunteers to attend the Official Volunteer Training on Saturday, February 22, from 11-1 at Calumet High School. If you are part of a student organization and would like to sign up as a group, please email Brian at briandonnelly@copperdog150.com

Here is a quick description of some of the jobs that require the most volunteers:

• Crossing Guards – Help to create a safe crossing where the trail intersects a road or snowmobile trail.
• Timer – Records times and bib numbers at crossing to track racers progress and make sure no one is off course.
• Bag checker – Checks items in a bag carried by mushers against a list of wilderness survival supplies.
• Snow Fence Installation – Carries, unrolls, and sets up snow fence along 5th street in Calumet.
• Remove Snow Fence – See above, but backwards.
• Dog handler- Helps lead dog teams up to or away from the start/finish at each checkpoint. This is a very physical job, particularly at the start.

1. Nominations Sought for Faculty Distinguished Service Award

Nominations for the 2014 Faculty Distinguished Service Award are now being accepted. This award recognizes superior and exceptional service activities by a Michigan Tech faculty member for service rendered outside of the duties of university employment. A cash prize of $2,500 accompanies the award.

2. Omega House/Swedetown Trails Ski for the Key

The 2nd Annual Ski for the Key 2014 (Ski for the Keweenaw) is quickly approaching! This annual event supports two great organizations, and is a fun day of x-country skiing or snowshoeing.  Ski or snowshoe to earn points for prizes!

Ski for the Key will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 9 am to 2 pm at Swedetown Trails in Calumet. We are again donating the proceeds of this fundraiser to Omega House and Swedetown Trails Club.

You can pledge, ahead of time, or just come on out and register, anytime between 9 am and 2 pm on February 8.

3. Annual Bigfoot Snowshoe Event

This years Bigfoot Snowshoe event will be held on Saturday, February 8. Registration is from 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the waxing shed on the Tech Trails and complimentary snowshoes are available with a student ID. The raffle will be held at noon and as always participants receive a long sleeve T-Shirt!

The pre-registration deadline is Friday, January 31 and payments must be received by this date. Tech students and children (12 and under) is $15, pre-registration is $10, adults are $18, pre-registration is $12.

4. CopperDog Volunteers Needed

Are you looking for a way to beat the mid-winter blahs and enjoy some fresh air in the pristine Keweenaw back country? Here’s your chance!

The CopperDog 150 is a professional sled dog race that travels from Calumet to Copper Harbor and back over three days. The event runs from February 28-March 2, and requires hundreds of volunteers. Most jobs only require a few hours of your time, and you are sure to have a blast.

The reputation of the CopperDog Volunteer has spread all through out the sport of dogsled racing. When asked for feedback on their visit to the Keweenaw, musher after musher comments on the hospitality and enthusiasm of CopperDog 150 volunteers. You are what make this race so successful!

We strongly encourage all volunteers to attend the Official Volunteer Training on Saturday, February 22, from 11-1 at Calumet High School. If you are part of a student organization and would like to sign up as a group, please email Brian at briandonnelly@copperdog150.com

Here is a quick description of some of the jobs that require the most volunteers:

• Crossing Guards – Help to create a safe crossing where the trail intersects a road or snowmobile trail.
• Timer – Records times and bib numbers at crossing to track racers progress and make sure no one is off course.
• Bag checker – Checks items in a bag carried by mushers against a list of wilderness survival supplies.
• Snow Fence Installation – Carries, unrolls, and sets up snow fence along 5th street in Calumet.
• Remove Snow Fence – See above, but backwards.
• Dog handler- Helps lead dog teams up to or away from the start/finish at each checkpoint. This is a very physical job, particularly at the start.

5. 9th Annual Railroad Night

Come out for Railroad Night on February 18 from 7 – 9:30pm at the Franklin Square Inn.  This is an opportunity to build connections and a chance to follow up with railroad company representatives after Career Fair during a formal dinner.

Admission is free and your ticket includes a great meal and a chance to win raffle prizes.

1. HuskyLEAD Session Required for Orgs Seeking Funding

This is a reminder that if your student organization is planning to request funding from the Undergraduate Student Government for the 2014-2015 academic year, a representative from your organization is REQUIRED to attend the HuskyLEAD session on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 beginning at 6:00 PM in Fisher 135. The session is called “Financing and Budgeting for Your Organization” and the presenter is Kyle Axline, treasurer for the USG. The sessions are only expected to last one hour. 5. OAP Spring Break Info Meeting

An info meeting discussing the specifics of the Alternative Spring Break trips will be held on Thursday, January 30 at 7:00 in the MUB Alumni Lounge B.

The Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) student staff plan a number of Spring break adventures for students. The OAP prides itself on offering a quality experience in the outdoors, planned and led by student trip leaders.  Our student trip leaders have extensive training, including Wilderness First Responder Certification and previous trip leader experience.  Our trip leaders spend a great deal of time researching and planning these trips to ensure a safe, fun, and sometimes educational experience for their peers.

The cost of the trips will vary from year to year as well as from trip to trip. In the past trips have ranged in cost from about $300 to $1000, depending on location and activities included.  PE0210 class credit is available for Track A of Spring 2014 for participating in an ASB trip. A fee of $200 will be billed for 0.5 credit hours.

The Polar Bear Dive will take place on Saturday, January 25 at 3:00 PM on the Hancock waterfront near the Copper Island Beach Club.

The Huskies host Ferris State Friday and Saturday, January 24-25 at 7:07 PM each night.  The first 500 inside when doors open at 6:00 PM will receive complimentary food and drink courtesy the Library Restaurant and Brew Pub.  Pregame party admission requires a game ticket or a Michigan Tech ID.

9. Lifeguard Training Class Offered

Earn your American Red Cross certification in this five-day training course located at the Michigan Tech SDC Pool. Certification includes lifeguard and CPR certification and all training materials. All participants must be 15 years of age or older by March 2, (documentation required), be able to swim 300 yards without stopping and tread water with legs only for two minutes. Class size is limited, and deadline to register is February 7. The class runs from February 19 to March 2.

2014 Undergraduate Research Expo Call for Apstracts

The Michigan Tech Honors Institute would like to invite all undergraduate researchers from every department to submit an abstract for research to be presented at the 2014 Undergraduate Research Expo. This expo will give researchers a chance to present posters describing completed or ongoing research and receive feedback from faculty judges. Not only will this event be an excellent learning experience for presenters, but it will also showcase the undergraduate research that is happening at Michigan Tech. The Expo will be held in the Rosza Lobby during Spring Preview Weekend (March 21) when visiting high school students will be able to see the exciting opportunities available to them at Michigan Tech.

The Honors Institute has been working closely with the Vice President of Research and the Undergraduate Admissions Office to make this event possible, and hopes undergraduate researchers will take advantage of this valuable experience. Printing of posters will be sponsored up to $25. For directions for poster design, please visit tinyurl.com/UREposter. Prizes of $200, $150, and $100 will be awarded to the best 3 posters, as chosen by faculty judges.

Submission will take place via an online form, but is is recommended that presenters save their abstract in a document and copy the required information to the website. Abstracts will need to include presenter name, e-mail address, class, college/school, department, and faculty advisor’s name. The body of the abstract should include a title, the names of the authors, an introduction, a description of the materials and methods, the results of the completed or ongoing research, and any acknowledgements. Submissions will be accepted from November 15, 2013 until January 31, 2014. Abstracts will be reviewed by Research Expo staff, and a confirmation of acceptance will be sent by February 8. In the event that not all presenters will fit in the Rosza Lobby, it is possible that some abstracts will not be accepted.

Michigan Tech Research Lab in Need of Blood Donors

Schools Out, the SDC’s In

Coinciding with the full day or 1/2 day off for most local schools on Friday, Jan. 17, Michigan Tech Recreation is hosting a “School’s Out, the SDC’s In!” event. For $8, local youth receive an SDC “School’s Out” all-inclusive day pass which includes access to the pool, multipurpose room and ice rink. Children 11 and under require adult supervision. The Fitness Center is available to students 16 and older only. Highlights include:

REAC Meeting

Railroad Engineering Activities Club is starting this Spring semester off with their first General Board Meeting on January 21 from 7:00-8:00 PM in Dillman 214. This is a reminder that student organizations can apply for funding through the Michigan Tech Parents Annual Fund, or the Parents Fund, administered by the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success.  Parents Fund money can be used for speakers and programs, social and community building events, University traditions including Winter Carnival and Spring Fling, travel for conferences and networking events, participation in national and regional competitions, or any event that encourages involvement in the Michigan Tech and campus communities.
