Comedian Cam Bertrand

Join Late Night for our first comedian of the Spring semester – Cam Bertrand!! This hilarious event will take place Saturday, January 29 at 10 PM in the MUB Ballroom. 

Cam Bertrand is one of the fastest rising comedy stars in the country.  Cam’s comedy can best be described as “sophisticated ignorance”. He prides himself on being able to turn even the dumbest conversations into ones that will have you up late at night asking yourself “What is that .01% of germs that GermX can’t kill after all this time?!..”

He’s opened for some of the biggest names in comedy today including Bert Kreischer, Joe Rogan, Pete Davidson, Michael Che, and Mike Epps. He was a contributing writer on two seasons of MTV’s Wild’N’Out (Seasons 11 and 12), has over 100 million views on TikTok (@camthecomic) and his recent Dry Bar Comedy special has been seen by millions online.  In 2021 Cam became a finalist on season 16 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent!

RSO Spring Involvement Fair

Looking for a way to get involved? The Spring Involvement Fair is a new tradition that takes place each January, giving new and returning students an opportunity to explore more options for their involvement.

Virtual Oasis- January 20th from 6-8 pm on Involvement Link
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) will have virtual meeting rooms attached to their organization’s description on the Virtual Oasis Involvement Link event page. New and returning students can browse through participating RSOs and join their virtual meeting rooms to chat with current members about their organization. Attending students will be entered into the prize drawing which includes Husky apparel, Hydroflask water bottles, and gift cards!

A Walk on the Beach- January 26th from 1-4 pm in the MUB
Student organizations will have individual tables set up throughout the MUB where new and returning students can check out the organizations. Students who talk with at least five different student organizations will enter into the prize drawing. All attending students will enjoy light, beach-themed refreshments.

Broomball is Hiring Referees!

We are once again short of refs! When we sent out our announcement that we had enough refs, 75 people had applied. Since then, only:
60 People confirmed the position
45 People submitted paperwork
28 People showed up to ref training

This is not enough.
We will be doing a few things to fix this problem:
Ref wages are increased to $11/hr, $11.25/hr for returning

We will be cutting games to fit our ref capacity. We will have off-ice training, followed by an on-ice shadowing of trained refs

Remember:
Refs can choose their own schedule, even just 1-2 shifts per week
You don’t have to know anything about broomball
Shifts are only 3hrs long.
Each person who applies helps save the Season

The Bob Mark Business Model Competition will host up to16 contestants. Priority will be given to those who have completed the Business Model Boot Camp.

Using the Business Model Canvas, students will work with members of the Husky Innovate teaching team to develop a business model for their innovation. We walk through the steps involved to help you understand the relationship between your value proposition and the customers’ needs. The more clearly you understand this relationship, the better your position to launch a winning product or service.

Michigan Tech Recreation: MI CPL Course

Registration is now open for the Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) course at MTU this spring! This is the course you must take to get your Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This is the premier course in the state of Michigan. The Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO) course covers what you need to know to carry a loaded weapon safely in open spaces. Students will receive a copy of the course material on the day of class. No experience is necessary. Minimum age of 20 years old and individuals will be responsible for supplying their own ammunition (100 rounds). There will be a firearms proficiency test and a written test that students will have to pass to complete the course. Cost is $150/person with their own equipment and $185/person with rental equipment (9mm pistol). Choose from three different course dates: January 15, February 19, or March 26. Course runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Class size is limited, so register now at https://mtu.universitytickets.com/w/event.aspx?id=3683.

2022 Spring Inolvement Fair “At the Beach”

The 2022 Spring Involvement Fair: “At the Beach” is coming back to campus this January! This year’s Fair will contain two components: 

  • “Virtual Oasis” will take place on Thursday, January 20th, from 6-8 pm on Involvement Link.
    • RSOs participating in “Virtual Oasis” will be required to provide a link to a virtual meeting room of their choice (i.e. Zoom, Discord, Google Meet).
  • “A Walk to the Beach” will take place on Wednesday, January 26th, from 1-4 pm on the first floor of the MUB.
    • Each attending RSO will have one table for their setup.
    • There is limited space available in the MUB, so sign up soon!
  • The Fair will feature giveaways, prizes, and snacks for participating students.

Your organization can sign-up for either (or both) of the components here. Sign-up for each RSO only needs to be completed once by any of the RSO’s officers. For more information about the “Virtual Oasis” or “A Walk on the Beach” events, please visit the 2022 Spring Involvement Fair page.

Martin Luther King Jr. 33rd Celebration

The Martin Luther King Jr. 33rd Celebration will be Monday, January 17th, 2022 at 6:00 pm at the Library, a zoom option will be available. Come celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the Center for Diversity Inclusion, including a keynote address from Michigan Tech Alumnae, Dr. Tsitsi Hungwe.
In addition to the celebration, check out the week-long “I Have a Dream” Exhibit in the Library, featuring artwork from MTU students. The exhibit will open following the conclusion of the celebration on January 17th. See the attached flyer for details.

Join us for a nice pre-exam stress relief evening of laughs! Friday, December 10 at 10 PM in the MUB Ballroom. This event is FREE!

Subhah Agarwal has brought an honesty to her comedy that will leave you saying “I didn’t need to know that.” Subhah has written for the “Plan B” movie on Hulu,” and The Jim Jefferies Show” on Comedy Central, amongst others. You can also catch her jokes live at stand-up comedy clubs across the country. If you don’t want to leave your couch, you can see her late night debut on NBC’s “A Little Late With Lilly Singh.” She’s also appeared on season three of HBO’s “Westworld”, on TruTv’s sketch comedy “Friends of the People”, and as herself on MTV2, Comedy Central, and Gotham Comedy Live.

See your pets while you study!

Nothing reduces stress more than a friendly furry (or scaly?) friend. Share a picture of your pets with the library by Dec. 9 and we’ll display them on the screens during finals week. Simply attach a photo of your pet in the linked form. Critters of all types welcome!

Introducing a new Scholarship Opportunity for Community Service

Beginning this spring, a $5,000 award will be presented to a student who demonstrates community service with lasting and meaningful impact during their time at Michigan Tech, regardless of background or area of study. Students are encouraged to document and think about their community service contributions throughout the academic year.

Dr. David and Marie Blum have initiated this endowment in memory of Marie’s parents, Josephine and William Balconi. David and Marie remember Marie’s parents as “kind, gracious, warm, and always helpful. They were always involved in helping others.” Marie’s parents lived in the Houghton area.

“Community service is an area that isn’t typically recognized,” said Marie. “We thought it would be nice to have an award where the student didn’t have to be the top brain in the class. We want to help students who help others.”

“Everyone who will be nominated has already won because they’ve helped others,” said David. “We hope that it’s not something they do just in college, but for the rest of their lives. We hope this helps produce well-rounded students—strong not only in academics but in helping humanity.”

You are encouraged to think about the different types of community service projects in which you or other students have participated both inside and outside of the classroom. More information will be provided in the spring semester, including the nomination form, as part of the Student Leadership Awards.

Reusable Containers Available at North Coast Grill and Deli

Consumer Product Manufacturing (CPM) Enterprise and Dining Services are partnering together to bring Sussex IM’s Mr. Lid products to North Coast Grill and Deli.
How the program works:

  1. Pay the one time $5 Program Fee to a cashier at North Coast Grill and Deli (and get a 10% discount on purchases!)
  2. Receive a key chain 
  3. When you purchase food, request your food in a Mr. Lid and exchange the key chain
  4. Once finished with your food, return your Mr. Lid to the cash register to get your key chain back
  5. Repeat steps 3-4 and enjoy!

The purposes of this program are:

  1. Environmental impact – sustainability
  2. Economical

Where – SDC parking lots
When – Collecting starts 1 hour 15 mins prior to game start time until either Single game – the start of 2nd half or Double header – the start of 2nd game. 
Other notes – Safety vests and hand warmers are provided. Groups should dress appropriately for the weather. (8) Individuals needed per shift.
Revenue sharing agreement – 75% of parking fees collected to the group.

The Graduate Student Government is pleased to announce the official launch of the 60-day pilot program for the premium EDU membership of the cross-platform cloud-based writing assistant application- Grammarly. Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff can use Grammarly EDU via the grammarly.mtu.edu website. Once you log in with your SSO credentials, you will be able to utilize the full features of the Grammarly EDU subscription till December 24. Based on your preference, you can use Grammarly on your browser, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Mac/Desktop, or on your tablet. Overleaf users can use Overleaf textarea to convert LaTex into plain text to use with Grammarly.

We encourage you to use this service in their day-to-day life as much as possible and share your thoughts and feedback with us. New Recycling Opportunities on Campus

Kimberly-Clark has partnered with the Consumer Product and Manufacturing enterprise to make the recycling of flex-film plastics much more accessible to students. Flex film is any plastic designated with the recycling code 4. Examples of flex film are plastic bags, soda rings, or ziplock bags. If it stretches but doesn’t tear, it’s flex film! Look out for purple recycling containers in the North Coast Grill and Deli, as well as in the CPM office in the basement of the Chemical Sciences building. GSG Workshop: Managing Finances as a Graduate Student

As graduate students, managing finances is important and oftentimes difficult. We are delighted to bring you guest speaker Mike Kolasa, certified financial planner and advisor and Vice-President of the Marquette Trust and Investment Service Office, for an informative seminar on financial management.

Mike opened the Marquette Trust and Investment Service Office in 2012 and has 24 years of financial and legal experience. As a long time resident of the Marquette area, his primary focus is on financial, tax, and estate planning as well as account investment management for clients in Upper Michigan and beyond. Breaking Stereotypes for Women Engineers

Please join us for a “Breaking Stereotypes for Women Engineers” event hosted by the ECE department, SWE, the Panhellenic Council, and the IPC and Electronics Club. The event will take place Monday, November 15th from 7-9pm in MUB Ballroom A. The event will start out with a panel of women engineers and professors discussing a time in their education or career in which they were faced with a stereotype. These stories will then be followed by a discussion on how the panelist handled the situation.

After the panel has had a chance to speak, we will be asking the audience to write down a time they personally experienced a stereotype. These responses will be collected and read anonymously to the audience. We will then be asking the panel to comment on what they have heard. There will be light refreshments and a chance to network after the panel and discussion.

Indoor Cycling Class– Join Today!

This indoor cycling class is welcome to all skill levels! The difficulty of your ride is up to you during our modifiable 50-minute high-energy group ride. Pedal to the beat of your favorite songs to create a fun and encouraging aerobic workout. Classes focus on interval and resistance cycling drills to promote wellness and encourage a lifelong love of cycling.The class runs every Monday and Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the SDC Fitness Studio and is taught by our new instructor, Paige. This class is also included in both the 8-punch and 16-punch HuskiesFit Ultimate Punch Card.

This event will contain information about how to improve overall well-being, and touch on specific topics like suicide prevention and Alcohol and Other Drug use and prevention.  This event is open to the Michigan Tech Community.

41 North Film Festival this Weekend!

The annual 41 North Film Festival begins this Thursday and runs through Sunday, 11/7, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The festival offers a great opportunity to watch thought-provoking, entertaining, and award-winning films from around the world that explore a range of issues, ideas, and personalities. Along with over 30 films in the program this year, there will be special guests and attractions, and live music in the lobby between films. The festival is free — just bring your student I.D. and your friends!

3MT Finals

The Graduate Student Government (GSG) at Michigan Tech is pleased to announce this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. In this prestigious academic competition, participants are judged on their communication and presentation skills while delivering their research in just three minutes with one static PowerPoint slide. 

With 33 participants and 3 different heats, 9 finalists have been chosen for the final rounds. You can find more information on the finalists on our website. The preliminary rounds will be held at the MUB ballroom from 1pm to 4pm. The finalists will compete on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at the Orpheum Theater in Hancock. Shuttle service will be available from the MUB to the Orpheum Theater leaving at 5:30pm and Orpheum Theater to the MUB at 8:30pm.

The first and second place winners will receive cash prizes of $300 and $150 respectively. Additionally, a People’s Choice (PC) award will be given to a speaker selected by the event’s audience, with a cash prize of $100. An online voting poll will be set-up for the People’s Choice award.

Grab some pizza from Studio Pizza and join us in-person (or virtually) to listen to graduate students presenting their research in just Three Minutes!

Pajama Drive

The Barbara Kettle Gundlach Women’s Shelter is in need of pajama donations for children size toddler – age 12 and adult size small – 2XL. November 7th-12th Order of Omega, Society of Women Engineers, and Society of Intellectual Sisters will be tabling on campus to accept pajama donations and monetary donations for the shelter. Delta Zeta Bake Sale

No tricks, just treats! Delta Zeta will be having a Halloween themed bake sale on October 27th and 28th in the benefit of their national philanthropies for Speech and Hearing, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Copper Country Humane Society. Items include: brownies, mini cheesecakes, cookies, and rice krispie treats ranging from $2-$5. Cash or Venmo will be accepted. The bake sale will be from 12pm-4pm in the library and outside the library. 

Journal Writing Seminar

Public speaking and effective communication skills are paramount to success in the workplace! The GSG Professional Development committee is excited to announce an interactive seminar on public speaking hosted by Marina Choy and Veena Namboodri, communication instructors and PhD candidates in the Rhetoric, Theory and Culture program at the Department of Humanities.  We will actively discuss speech anxiety management as well as tips for improving delivery, clarity, organization, audience engagement, and more.

Join us for a night of laughs on Friday, October 29th at 10pm in the MUB Ballroom! Melissa McGillicuddy is a stand-up comedian based in Sacramento, California. Being an only (and super gay) child raised by a single mom in a conservative town, Melissa found she didn’t always fit in, so she used humor as a way to connect with people. Melissa also co-produces the Moving Van Show, a monthly, secret pop-up comedy show, as well as Sacramento FemmeFest, the city’s first all-female comedy festival.

Diwali Night 2021

Only 3 days to go for one of the biggest events on MTU campus! Indian Student Association (ISA) is organizing ‘Diwali Night‘ event on October 30th, 2021 (Saturday). Tech Trails Late Fall/Winter Update

As the leaves and temperatures fall, the Tech Trails are preparing for the snow to begin falling as well. Over the summer, lots of work was put into the trails to ensure a great ski season. It can sometimes be forgotten how much work it takes in the summer to provide great trails during the winter.  

Tolkien Trails

The Tolkien Trails saw a significant amount of work this summer with clearing the standing dead ash trees near the trails. Around 200 trees were felled, removed, and donated to Little Brothers, totaling nearly 25 cords of wood! Ditches were cleared, trails were widened to help save our grooming equipment, and two bridges were replaced with culverts to accommodate drainage on the ski trails. Bridge lumber was recycled into eight other bridges placed in the notoriously wet areas of Troll and Gnome Loops. To top it all off, KISMA is planting 500 native trees and understory seedlings to help replace the lost trees! 

Main Trails

On the Main Trails, more drainage issues were addressed with installing or reinstalling 12 culverts on Down Under, Ridge, and Tanglewood loops. In addition, the crew fixed wiring on Balsam, replaced 20 old metal halide lights with high-efficiency LEDs, trimmed some of our problem trees, and cleared the high ropes course of nuisance trees as well.  

It is a fair amount of work, and this is on top of the work needed for the mountain bike trails, which we were able to address a bit. About 500 meters of Inner Core was machine worked to bring it closer to the trail rating and what it was designed to be. We were also able to do some work on the Dirt Jumps and about 50 meters of Twilight. A few other problems areas were addressed on Hillside and Just Mite, which was done by hand.

Disc Golf Course

Over on the Disc Course, we installed 12 tee pads and cleared fairways of trees, stumps, and debris. As a result, the course boasts 15 holes that are now playable and enjoyable. Plans to complete the 18 holes are in place, and strategic partnerships with the Forestry Club and Disc Golf Club are helping to move that along.  

Winter Updates

Enough about summer, what about winter!? Some updates for winter and the Tech Trails include re-establishing a changing space, wax space, and indoor space. Of course, things will look different than they did in 2019, but space will be made available for folks to change and wax their skis indoors at the main trailhead. In addition, room ten will be available and open during lighted trail hours and the day. This will include access to secure changing space and space with a wax table, iron, and lights. In addition, chairs and a table are available for those who may want to rest and eat while taking a break.  

OAP Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Rental

The Outdoor Adventure Program will again be operating out of the Wax Shed as they have the past couple of years with ski rentals. The rental fleet was updated this year, and kid’s skis were added! The annual equipment rental is still in place for students and non-students, and sales will begin on November 1, 2021. Dogs

As a friendly reminder from the Michigan Tech Trails staff, dogs should be under the owner’s control and on a leash while utilizing the dog-approved trails. 

Here is the official Michigan Tech Trails policy regarding dogs which is supplemental to the Michigan Tech Board of Trustees Policy:

Dogs must be leashed and under owners’ control at all times and are restricted to the Tolkien, Nara, Isle Royale, and Superior trails via the following access points – softball fields, Nara & Tolkien. No dogs at the main trailhead. 

Over the summer, the staff enhanced signage and dog waste dispensers at dog-approved use trails. We ask that all Tech Trails users with dogs be considerate and respectful of the Michigan Tech policies and all users of our wonderful trail system. At the end of the day, we all want to enjoy our trails in a safe and secure environment. For reference, here are some tips on proper dog etiquette and a link from the Humane Society to help educate dog owners.

Etiquette for dog owners:

  • Scoop your poop. Bring several bags on your walks to be sure you have enough.
  • Prevent barking.
  • Only let your dog greet a stranger if they ask.
  • Always leash your dog on walks.
  • Don’t play while on a leash.
  • Be aware of other people’s feelings – Not everyone is a dog-lover.

Trail Passes

The Michigan Tech Trails are a great resource to our campus and the greater community. Please support them by purchasing an annual membership or day pass. Your support helps ensure that our trails are well-groomed, maintained, and updated.

Trail usage is one of the benefits of the Experience Tech Fee, and currently enrolled Michigan Tech students may use the Tech Trails at no charge. A trails membership or day pass is required for all other users. Children age 12 and younger are eligible for a free youth trails membership available at the SDC Ticket Office.

Trails members get access to locker room 110 in the SDC. Locker rentals are reserved for SDC members. Please email trailsinfo@mtu.edu with any questions, concerns, or comments. We hope that everyone is able to enjoy our trails system responsibly!
