The Parade of Nations planning committee is excited to announce registration for the 33rd annual Parade of Nations is now open!

Since 1989, the Houghton and Hancock communities have been celebrating the rich cultural diversity of the Keweenaw. We are excited to continue that tradition on September 17th! This year’s parade begins at 11 a.m. in Hancock, crosses the Portage Lift Bridge, and ends at the Dee Stadium. This amazing celebration of unity and culture is open to the entire community, and we hope you will consider participating!

Any individual is invited to request a flag of any country that they wish to represent by completing the Flag Request Form. One flag and one sign will be provided per nation. Everyone is welcome to walk in the Parade of Nations with any of the represented countries.

Groups are invited to apply to enter a float, and our contest returns this year! Every registered float has the chance to win prize money ($300 for 1st place, $200 for 2nd place, and $100 for 1st place). All floats must be designed according to this year’s Parade of Nations theme: The World is One. A float can be a decorated vehicle, a vehicle pulling a decorated trailer, or other motorized or non-motorized conveyance that serves as a platform for a decorated display, exhibit, and/or performance. Complete the Float Application to sign up!

Grants are available to support Student Organizations in purchasing supplies for their float. The grant application is included as part of the float application process. Organizations are eligible for up to $100 in funding.

You do not have to be a multicultural organization to sign up! Consider how your club, organization, or group is influenced by diverse cultures. For example, how do sports connect people across the globe? How does community service benefit our global society? How does climate change impact all nations? You are invited to explore how your group’s purpose is influenced by our global society and share that through a float entry.

Need service hours? Volunteers are the driving force behind this event. They help with event set-up, walk in the parade, serve as parade marshals, and provide support at the multicultural festival. Explore the volunteer positions and sign up for the one that best fits your interests.

Welcome Week Binder Stuffing

Welcome Week Binders are back but we need your help to make them a reality! We have 1200 binders that will be distributed to students on the first day of classes with a wealth of information from our partners around campus. Come hang out with us to snap that information into place!

Shifts are available on Thursday, August 18th, 2-4 PM and Tuesday, August 23rd, 3-5 PM.

Parade of Nations 2022

Wondering who Verna Mize is?

Verna Mize was a pioneer for Lake Superior in the environmental movement back in 1967. The standard at the time was to dump the shavings of iron ore pellets into the lake with the proposal being, “the solution to pollution is dilution.” She refused this reply and convinced the Federal Government and the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota to bring a lawsuit against the company. The lawsuit was settled in favor of the people and the companies are now dumping on land effectively saving Lake Superior from certain destruction.

House Construction with Habitat for Humanity

Copper Country Habitat for Humanity is in the process of building its next home for someone in need. They have started to clear lot 26 on Green Acres Road, in Houghton and will continue work on the property throughout the summer. Volunteers are needed on Thursdays from 9-3 and on Saturdays from 9-3. Lunch will be provided. Any skill level is welcome to come and volunteer, there will be someone to show the volunteers how and what they can do to help during their shift volunteering. Come HANG with Student Leadership and Involvement staff this Friday! Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on Walker Lawn lounging in a hammock, balancing on a slackline, or just sitting outside soaking in the summer heat. We will have limited hammocks and slacklines for use so feel free to bring your own as well!

The MTU Sustainability Demonstration House is excited to be offering Beekeeping 101 classes this summer!  If you are curious about backyard beekeeping and want to learn more about what it takes to set up a hive, then this is the class for you!  Please see the attached flyer for information on the class content, days, and times. Class space is limited, so sign up now!  (sign-up link can be found in the attached flyer).  Any questions can be sent to sdh@mtu.edu.

The MTU Sustainability Demonstration House (SDH) is in search of an official project logo!  We would like to invite students across campus to submit logo designs for the SDH project.  We have over $60 in prizes available, including gift cards to two local businesses: Refill U.P. and the Keweenaw Co-op.  The official contest guidelines are attached to this email.  Logos are due on August 14th and can be submitted via this Google form. 

Join Student Leadership and Involvement on Tuesday, July 12th at noon for lunch time yoga outside on Walker Lawn! The session will be led by Brigitte Morin, Associate Teaching Professor in Biological Sciences and co-owner of Fresh Coast Yoga. All levels are welcome!

Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mat and water bottle. Don’t have you own mat? No worries! We will have a number of extras on hand for individuals to borrow.

Join Residence Education and Housing Services for a Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 17th from 1-3pm on the Douglass Houghton Hall Yard!

There will be a trivia contest with prizes, as well as snacks and yard games available to play! This event will also have educational materials to learn more about the history of the holiday. 

The origins of Juneteenth are directly related to the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865, who were ordered to inform the enslaved people and the state’s residents that slavery had been abolished. This news was delivered more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared freedom for more than three million enslaved people living in the Confederate states. This holiday celebrates freedom for all Americans and serves as the longest-running African-American holiday.

Summer is here in the Keweenaw. How will you make a difference this summer?

Join our team at Summer Youth Programs to help students in grades 6-11 explore their interests and experience college life this summer at Michigan Tech! You’ll build critical leadership and interpersonal skills while spending the summer in Houghton! Meet students from across the country and around the world while you lead their discovery of the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. 

We’re looking for leaders like you to join our team this summer!

Summer is on its way and so is GSG’s summer softball league! This no-holds-bar extreme slow-pitch Softball League will be held over the Summer Semester from June 9th to August 6th! Games will be held weekly on Thursday evenings from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with Tuesday reserved for makeup games.

Don’t have any softball equipment you say? Well, no worries here! GSG will provide bats, balls, and gloves for every registered player. Of course, if you do have your own equipment, you are more than welcome to use them. Also, feel free to start recruiting for your team. Those who are not affiliated with a team but are interested in playing are welcome to register solo. We will find a team for you. If you don’t have enough players for a team, still register! We will help you to fill your team with available solo players.
