Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®-  October 22, 2021

Michigan Tech Title IX and Institutional Equity along with two student organizations, Society of African American Men (SAAM) and Sexual Assault and Violence Education (SAVE), are hosting Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event on October 22 from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

The walk will start outside of the Rozsa Center near the front entrance. This event is provided to raise awareness of sexual assault and gender violence and to give men the opportunity to put themselves in “her shoes”. Men are encouraged to wear high heels during the one-mile walk. We hope that this event starts conversations about the causes, effects, and solutions to ending sexual and gender violence.

GSG presents Grammarly @EDU

The Graduate Student Government is pleased to announce that we will be launching a 60-day pilot program for the premium EDU membership of the cross-platform cloud-based writing assistant application- Grammarly. This pilot will allow Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff to use the premium features of Grammarly @EDU for free for 60 days using the Michigan Tech SSO. This premium membership upgrades the service from basic spelling and punctuation checking to a complete writing assistant experience, including tone checks, ease of reading detection, and plagiarism check. The pilot will start on October 25 and will go on until December 24. During and after the pilot, we will send out a survey to determine the use and the need for this service for our campus. GSG would like to thank USG for supporting this initiative. Also, we would like to thank IT for providing the necessary technical support for the successful execution of this pilot.

GSG encourages everyone to use Grammarly as much as they can in different capacities. While it can assist students with writing manuscripts, efficient emails to peers and supervisors, and regular assignments, for faculty and staff it can assist with day-to-day email communications, proposal writing, and plagiarism detection. Diwali Night 2021

Are you all excited about the Diwali Night event this year? Diwali Night is one of the biggest on-campus events organized by the Indian Students Association (ISA).

Ought to celebrate the festival of lights, ISA presents the prestigious “Diwali Night-2021” on October30, 2021 (Saturday). The venue for the festivity is MUB and Rozsa Center for the food and performances respectively. We hereby proudly invite you to join us and enjoy a grand 8-Course Dinner Buffet at MUB filled with a mouthwatering list of Indian special delicacies, and of course, a complete stage show with engaging performances from Music and Dance teams!

IRHC Night of Fright

IRHC is having a new Halloween event, “Night Of Fright” on Sunday, October 31 from 1-5pm on Walker Lawn. It will include a house competition event in the form of decorating tables where each house will have the opportunity to give out candy provided by IRHC as well as the opportunity for your hall to win house funds for the best decorated table. There will also be other activities targeted at both children and students including pumpkin carving (everyone), a costume contest (students, $300 in bookstore gift cards up for grabs), photo booth with props (everyone), bowling (children), ring toss (children), cornhole (everyone) and potentially mini golf (everyone).. Apple cider and root beer will also be provided to all.

Stress Less

The stress of schoolwork and other factors can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. Join the Center for Student Mental Health and Well-Being for this workshop to learn how to reduce that stress and to live a happier, healthier life!

Journal Writing Seminar

Do you need help formatting your manuscript for submission or wondering how to start the process of submitting it for publication? Join Dr. Shari Stockero (Academic Affairs & Cognitive Learning Sciences) and Dr. Abraham Romney (Humanities) in an online panel discussion that will cover the following topics: 

• Choosing a Journal 
• Developing a Writing Plan
• Preparing a Manuscript 
• Submitting the Manuscript 
• Revising and Resubmitting

Make A Difference Day 2021 Registration is OPEN!

Registration for Make a Difference Day 2021 is now open! Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of community service in which students, faculty, and staff come together to serve our community. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 23 from 9am-1pm. 
Join the Michigan Tech community in giving back to our local area by volunteering for a local organization, agency, or community member! Volunteer projects will vary based on the needs of partner organizations. Painting, weeding, planting, digging, raking, cleaning, organizing, and moving are all likely projects that we have seen in the past. Register here to be assigned to a service site.
Check-in will start at 9AM in the MUB Ballroom. Information packets will be distributed and from there, groups will travel to service locations. Projects may require that groups drive to the location.

PLEASE NOTE: Each member of your organization/group must register individually for Make a Difference Day. The final deadline to register is Monday, October 18th at 10 AM

Mini Pumpkin Painting

Make a custom fall decoration this year with Keewenaw Pride, Panhellenic Council, and Women’s Leadership Council! The event will take place on October 18th from 7-9 pm in MUB Ballroom A. There will be mini plastic pumpkins available to paint. Supplies are limited.

Beta Sigma Theta and Delta Sigma Phi host “Protect your Pumpkin”

Protect your Pumpkin is a pumpkin carving and painting event to raise money for mental health charities. The prices of the pumpkins depend on their size. Students will be able to find us in the MUB Ballroom A2(207 A2) from 2-7 pm on Friday. After students finish with their pumpkins they will be able to place them around campus on the grassy areas for everyone to see.

11th Annual Treat Street

The City of Houghton and Houghton Police Department are hosting their 11th Annual Treat Street in downtown Houghton on Saturday, October 16th from 4-7pm. All you have to do is show up in a (not too scary) costume and enjoy the fun!

There will be music, vendors, a petting zoo and all kinds of fun things for all ages. Want to help pass out candy or trick-or-treat bags? Contact Lt. Nicholas Roberts at 906-487-5912 to volunteer.

IDEA Pitch Competition

Building Resilience Workshop

Things change when you come to school, and that can be challenging. Suddenly you have to take care of yourself, keep your space clean, and get your homework done. In order to handle all of this, you might need to build some resilience. Join the Center for Student Mental Health and Well-Being for their Building Resilience workshop on Thursdays from 1-2pm. Learn how to bounce back from all the challenges that college brings and get yourself back on track!

GSG Presents: Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition

The Graduate Student Government (GSG) at Michigan Tech is pleased to announce this year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. It will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021. This year it is coming back to an entirely in-person format, and the final round will take place at the Orpheum Theater in Hancock. This competition offers an excellent opportunity for graduate students across the university. It celebrates the exciting research conducted by graduate students. It supports their capacity to verbally summarize and explain their research in three minutes or less, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

The 3MT competition is an academic research communication competition originally developed by the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2008. Success and the growing popularity of the competition spread the idea across more than 900 universities in more than 80 countries around the globe. The Michigan Tech competition winner will earn the opportunity to present at the regional 3MT competition. Participants are judged on their communication and presentation skills while delivering their content in just three minutes with one static PowerPoint slide. 

The competition is divided into two phases: preliminary rounds and a final round. The winner and runners-up will receive cash prizes of $300 and $150, respectively. Additionally, a People’s Choice award will be given to a speaker selected by the audience, with a cash prize of $100. 

The event is open to all active graduate students at any stage/path of their graduate studies at Michigan Tech. But for participating in the final level Asia-Pacific 3MT competition, only active Ph.D. and Professional Doctorate (Research) candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible. Graduates do not qualify for the competition.

Mr. Lid Recyclable Containers

Green Campus Enterprise, Consumer Product Manufacturing (CPM) Enterprise, and Dining Services are partnering together to bring Sussex IM’s Mr. Lid products to North COast Grill and Deli. How the program works:

1. Pay the one time $5 Program Fee
2. Receive a key chain 
3. When you purchase food, request your food in a Mr. Lid and exchange the key chain
4. Once finished with your food, return your Mr. Lid to the cash register to get your key chain back
5. Repeat steps 3-4 and enjoy!

The purposes of this program are:

1. Environmental impact – sustainability

Protect your Innovation

Husky Innovate and the Van Pelt and Opie Library are collaborating to host “Protect Your Innovation”.  This workshop will be held October 6th, in the Library Room 244 from 5-7 pm.  This workshop will answer several intellectual property questions.   

How can you protect the intellectual property incorporated within your innovation?

What options do you have and what strategies can you apply?

When should you consider IP protections?

We will discuss the fundamentals of intellectual property including – 

• Patents
• Trademarks
• Licensing
• Trade Secrets/Knowhow
• How to initiate a prior art discovery with free library resources

Michigan Tech IP expert, Licensed Patent Agent, Associate Vice President for Research Administration Jim Baker will lead us through compelling IP scenarios.

Librarian and Patent and Trademark Research Center (PTRC) Representative Annelise Doll will explain patents, trademarks and resources available through Michigan Tech’s PTRC which is part of the Patent and Trademark Office’s nationwide program of PTRCs.

K-Day is FRIDAY!!

After a year away, K-Day will be returning to Chassell Centennial Park!

Michigan Tech’s annual K-Day (Keweenaw Day) is Friday (Sept. 10). Classes will release at noon. In addition to food, music and inflatable games, more than 190 registered student organizations will have booths for the 3,500 to 4,000 students who regularly attend K-Day.

While students are welcome to drive to K-Day or carpool with friends, Student Leadership and Involvement offers large buses that will be shuttling students back and forth from the Rozsa parking lot on campus to the park starting at noon. Buses will depart about every 15 minutes and will run until all students have been picked up from the park and returned to campus.

Students planning to drive themselves, please note: There is no parking inside the park. Parking on the street is available but limited.

K-Day is sponsored by Fraternity and Sorority Life and Student Leadership and Involvement, with additional support from Athletics, Facilities and Homestead Graphics. Members of Michigan Tech’s 20 fraternities and sororities volunteer in order to make this event possible each year.

**Masks are required while on the Bus, please be prepared.

The Western UP Health Department and Michigan Tech invite you to join David Woods Bartley’s talk about lifesaving support in mental “hellness” situations and move towards mental wellness.

The mental health speaker, educator, and trainer has seen his fair share of successes and setbacks, from directing a nationally recognized nonprofit to battling a life-threatening mental illness. After his life being saved, David’s mission is to shine a light on this crisis and open doors to the possibility of mental health for everyone, everywhere.

First Friday Social
