This workshop discusses ways in which one can build an effective and long-lasting organization that best serves the needs of marginalized students and the campus as a whole. Be it a new organization or one that can use an overhaul this session allows time to focus on both short and long term goals and how the organization fits into campus culture.

Afrobeat Weekly Dance Classes for Spring 2020

The African Students Organization (ASO) organizes weekly Afrobeat dance classes for the Michigan Tech community, without charge.

This semester’s schedule of classes (Spring 2020) will commence on Tuesday, January 21, 7:30pm-8:30pm at the SDC Fitness Studio. It will repeat weekly (for the same time and venue) till the last week of regular classes, precisely Tuesday, April 21. The week of the Spring Break is excluded.

Come and enjoy energetic African music while exercising. Our instructors are eager to take you through the classes no matter your level of dance skill. Don’t be left out of the move!

UP North-South

A Festival of Music from Both Ends of 41

Michigan Tech’s Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts; Visual and Performing Arts Department; and Elizabeth “Libby” Meyer, Lecturer in Visual and Performing Arts and Director of the Music Composition Program will be presenting three days of new music, workshops, and masterclasses in the Surround Sound Music Series. The events begin Friday at 7:30 PM in the McArdle Theatre with the U.P. Composers Collective Concert  featuring pieces by local composers Thomas LaVoy, Milt Olsson, Griffin Candey, Elena Ruehr, Sarah Rimkus, and Carrie Biolo. They continue on Saturday at 3:00 PM with a masterclass by Michigan Tech student composers and the Miami-based PULSE trio, followed by PULSE’s own concert at 7:30 that evening. Sunday’s event, Music from Along 41, begins at 3:00 PM and features modern local, regional, and national composers and performers from along the route between the U.P. and Florida.

SDC Lap Pool

The lap pool and dive tank at the Student Development Complex will be closed for the first stage of renovation beginning Friday, December 13th. During this closure, various projects are scheduled to be completed in the pool area which includes removal of the bleachers and various tile work on the walls, benches and deck.
The lap pool is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Monday, January 20. The dive tank will remain closed until further notice. Details on the lap pool spring semester schedule and phase 2 of the renovation will be available at a later date.
Thank you for your patience as we work through this.

Husky Innovate

 

The Outdoor Adventure Program will be hosting a 5-Day WFR course, taught by Wilderness Medical Associates, on January 6-10, 2020 here at Michigan Tech. This course is open to anyone and everyone! Class size is limited.

“Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. The 5-day format is for individuals and sponsors with less time available for on-site training and requires 25 hours of pre-course preparation. Students must register at least 2 weeks before the course date. All students must complete all pre-course work prior to arrival on course.”

Course details are available at 5-day WFR. Cost to register is $725. Register online at 5D-WFR.

Charity Drive

 

The College Republicans at Michigan Tech have begun their annual charity drive for Toys for Tots and the Western Upper Peninsula Food Bank. To donate, contact jfottman@mtu.edu or stmedley@mtu.edu for more details. Collection will be completed by Friday December 13th at 9:00 AM.
Additionally, the CR’s will also conduct their annual letter writing campaign to active duty service members on Friday December 6th at 6 PM in Fisher 129. All are welcome to come and send a letter to a service member.

Rosza Center Presents: Mozart Requiem Saturday

Michigan Tech Choirs and KSO Present Mozart Requiem Saturday

The Michigan Tech Concert Choir and conScience: The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra and the Combined Choirs of Michigan Tech present Mozart Requiem, one of the most beloved masterpieces in the choir/orchestra repertoire. Unfinished at the Mozart’s death, the work was finished by his student Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Featured in the film Amadeus, it is one of the most highly recognized pieces of Western classical music. The choirs and orchestra will also perform Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, another beloved work in the choral/orchestral canon. The concert will feature guest soloists Karen Beacom (soprano), Sandra Loy (alto), Robert Skylis (tenor), and Nathan Herfindahl (bass). Please join us for Mozart Requiem, on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 pm, in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

Winter Break Bus

 

For the last few years, the Undergraduate Student Government has chartered a student bus for Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break. If you have purchased a ticket in the past, I’d like to thank you for making this a successful endeavor.

Advice I would Give My Younger Self

 

The ECE department will be streaming a webinar from IEEE next Thursday morning titled “Advice I Would Give My Younger Self.” Hosted by former IEEE president Karen Bartleson, the presentation will focus on her career path and advice she has for aspiring women engineers. All are welcome! Karen will discuss a range of topics including leadership, mentoring, and paving a path to success.

Rosza Center Presents: Hopstock

 

The Rozsa Center and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) are excited to announce their semi-annual student showcase. The showcase, titled Hopscotch, features works of art created by Michigan Tech students who are participating in Project Learning Lab. Project Learning Lab is an innovative arts classroom based inside of Rozsa gallery b. Work on display was created by students in Lisa Gordillo’s Contemporary Sculpture and art + design classes. The exhibition runs Friday-Tuesday, Dec. 6 – 10, 2019. A reception will be held Friday, Dec. 6, from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM. The reception is free and all are welcome. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM and Saturday from 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Rosza Center Presents: Superior Wind Symphony Presents Wintry Mix

 

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents a concert by the Superior Wind Symphony (SWS), titled “Wintry Mix,” a celebration of the music of the holiday season, music that will warm our hearts and uplift our spirits as we settle into the dark and magic of the winter solstice, family celebrations, and Christmas. They will perform in the Rozsa Center this Friday, December 6, at 7:30 PM. Small ensembles will play Christmas music in the Rozsa Lobby prior to the show, to add to the holiday cheer of the evening.

The program includes contemporary band and jazz arrangements of traditional, classical, and folk holiday music, including Welsh, English, and Hebrew folk songs, a jazz band rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” and three pieces of music in original arrangements/adaptations by Michigan Tech’s Director of Bands, Mike Christianson, including his premier arrangement of Ralph Vaughn William’s Winter’s Willow.

Enjoy Winter Storytelling at its Finest: Famed Radio Show “Selected Shorts” Comes to the Rozsa Stage Saturday

The Rozsa Center is pleased to present an evening of warmth, holiday cheer, and storytelling by the tour of Public Radio International’s hit radio show “Selected Shorts” on Saturday, December 7, 7:30 PM.  Selected Shorts, a weekly public radio broadcast, has a simple approach: Great actors read great fiction in front of a live audience. The acclaimed national radio program airs on 150 public radio stations in 29 states, attracting over 300,000 listeners each week through the live show and podcast. Featured actors include Mike Doyle, Boyd Gaines, and Kirsten Vangsness. Part of this special evening of storytelling will include a showcase reading on stage by one of the featured actors of a local writer’s “UP Winter Story” who is the winner of the “Selected Shorts Story Contest.” To enhance the holiday mood of the evening, a handbell choir will play in the Rozsa lobby prior to the show.

Monday, December 2 –  “Risky Business” –  Have you ever thought of a brilliant idea for an event that may have some element of risk? Join us in discovering ways to still be able to have all the fun while understanding how to stay safe. Attend this HuskyLead held in MUB Alumni Lounge from 4-5 p.m. 

HuskyLEAD, a leadership development series for all Michigan Tech students. At Michigan Tech, we believe that leadership development is essential for all students to truly make an impact on campus and society. This program encourages all students from campus leaders and student organization officers, to individuals who just want to learn, to elevate their leadership skills by learning the best techniques, tips, and tricks for their personal, organizational, academic, and professional success.

Husky Innovate

The Outdoor Adventure Program will be hosting a 5-Day WFR course, taught by Wilderness Medical Associates, on January 6-10, 2020 here at Michigan Tech. This course is open to anyone and everyone! Class size is limited.

“Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is the definitive course in medical training for outdoor educators, guides, SAR team members, and others who work or play in remote areas. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical, including all of the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments. The 5-day format is for individuals and sponsors with less time available for on-site training and requires 25 hours of pre-course preparation. Students must register at least 2 weeks before the course date. All students must complete all pre-course work prior to arrival on course.”

The business model canvas helps you to understand the relationship between your value proposition and the customers’ needs.  The more clearly you understand this relationship, the better your position to launch a winning product or service.

Developed by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur, the business model canvas emphasizes the relationships of the nine components of a business model

Students who participated in the Idea Pitch Competition and/or plan to compete in the upcoming Bob Mark Business Model Competition, are strongly encouraged to register for this bootcamp. There is a cap of 25 contestants for our Bob Mark Business Model Competition. Priority will be given to those who have completed the Business Model Boot Camp.

Monday, December 2 –  “Risky Business” –  Have you ever thought of a brilliant idea for an event that may have some element of risk? Join us in discovering ways to still be able to have all the fun while understanding how to stay safe. Attend this HuskyLead held in MUB Alumni Lounge from 4-5 p.m. 

HuskyLEAD, a leadership development series for all Michigan Tech students. At Michigan Tech, we believe that leadership development is essential for all students to truly make an impact on campus and society. This program encourages all students from campus leaders and student organization officers, to individuals who just want to learn, to elevate their leadership skills by learning the best techniques, tips, and tricks for their personal, organizational, academic, and professional success.

Family Friday Night at the SDC!

Family Friday Night @ the SDC! This Friday, November 15, 7:00-9:00pm.

Enjoy some family-friendly recreation time! During select Friday evenings throughout the year, the following areas of the SDC will have extended/additional recreation options for anyone that wants to use the facility.

  • The pool will be open from 7:00-9:00pm, and there will be no lane lines. We will have log rolling available with staff to assist as well as lily pads and regular pool toys.
  • The climbing wall will be open from 7:00-9:00pm, and there will be staff available to assist.
  • The multipurpose room will have open recreation time per regular rules with first come, first serve on courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, etc.
  • Racquetball, wallyball and squash courts are available.
  • Equipment available – Show your Tech student ID, SDC membership card or day pass to the attendant at the desk by the multipurpose room to check out fun recreational equipment (ie basketballs) for use while you’re here at the SDC! Complete list of available equipment.

I-Corps Site Program, Fall 2019

Take your innovation to the next level through the lean launchpad customer discovery method. Teams who complete the five week program are eligible for $2,500 of funding for continued customer discovery and prototyping. They may also be eligible for the NSF National I-Corps program which includes $50,000 in funding and additional training.

Calling All Nominations for the Bayard Rustin Award

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) awards the Bayard Rustin Award to a servant leader on campus during the annual MLK reception. Rustin acted as an influential adviser “behind the scenes” to civil-rights leaders. He worked along Martin Luther King Jr. and helped organized Freedom Rides and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Rustin also served as an organizer for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. On November 20, 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This award features a servant leader who is often behind the scenes making significant strides and we would like to recognize them publicly for their commitment. Nominations are due December 1, 2019.
Award will be presented during the MLK Banquet on January 20, 2020.

2019 Copper Country Science & Engineering Festival

Mind Trekkers is hosting the 2019 Copper Country Science & Engineering Festival at Hancock High School for 700 local middle school students on Wednesday, November 20th and is seeking volunteers and student organizations to help excite these students about STEM!  Have you been interested in volunteering for Mind Trekkers but haven’t been able to travel?  Are you a part of a student organization that requires service hours or is just passionate about outreach?  Join us and inspire local students to pursue post-secondary education and careers in STEM.  Mind Trekkers can even supply hands-on STEM demonstrations for your organization if you do not have any on hand!
The event will be from 9:00 – 2:30 pm with a lunch break from 11:00 – 11:45.  Lunch will be provided to volunteers working all day, however, we are accepting volunteers who can only make it for the morning for afternoon as well!  Set up will start at 8:00 am and clean up will take place immediately after the event.  Rides available to and from Michigan Tech.

National Drone Safety Awareness Week

 

Do you own a drone? Do you fly that drone? Do you know about some of the guidelines the FAA has put in place for drones? Well your in luck because next week the FAA is initiating drone safety week across the nation and at Michigan Tech the Aviation Club is going to be hosting a one night condensed seminar on drone safety and an intro to getting your part 107 (commercial drone licence). We want to promote safe drone for everyone, and so if you own a drone or know someone who does, or if you are just curious on how to start making money with your drone then come join us on Friday, November 8th at 7pm (room TBA).

Late Night Presents: Comedian Lauren Faber

 

 

Join us for a night of laughs on Saturday, November 2 at 10 PM in the MUB Ballroom. Late Night presents Comedian Lauren Faber!

Lauren Faber is a feral comedian who was raised in a basement by the 90’s comedy specials of Ellen DeGeneres, Paula Poundstone, and Elvira Kurt. (Yes, she sees the connection now.) Her thoughtful comedy and storytelling touches on sexuality, mental health, politics, and her own very, very bad decisions. She has been compared to Kate McKinnon, PBS, and a golden retriever. (No, she doesn’t see the connection.)

Lauren’s comedy has appeared on Audible’s Punchlines. She was a StandUp NBC Semi-Finalist and won the titles of NYC’s She-Devil and Carolina’s Funniest Comic. She has performed in numerous festivals including Laughing Skull, Limestone, and 208 Fest has shared the stage with the likes of Maria Bamford, Beth Stelling, Fortune Feimster, Iliza Shlesinger, Todd Glass, and Matt Braunger.

When Lauren isn’t on stage, she manages international development research at a university in Durham, NC with a very famous basketball team that she cares nothing about. She has two cats, Stetson and Kennedy, and likes one of them. They were a gift. Don’t do that.

MUB Board Presents: Comedian Bryan Morris

 

Saturday, November 9th in the MUB Ballroom

The MUB board will be hosting a comedy night with comedian Bryan Morris! This event will go from 9-10 PM in the MUB ballroom.

Hogwarts Night

 

The MUB Board is hosting a Hogwarts Night on November 13th from 7-9 pm in the MUB Ballroom B. This event will have cupcake decorating, quidditch games, and pin the nose on Voldemort. Also, attendees are welcome to wear costumes!

LeaderShape Applications

MUB Board is hosting Archery Tag on November 16th at the SDC Wood Gym from 5-8 pm. This event is just like dodgeball or laser tag, but with bows and soft tip arrows.

National Drone Safety Awareness Week

 

Do you own a drone? Do you fly that drone? Do you know about some of the guidelines the FAA has put in place for drones? Well your in luck because next week the FAA is initiating drone safety week across the nation and at Michigan Tech the Aviation Club is going to be hosting a one night condensed seminar on drone safety and an intro to getting your part 107 (commercial drone licence). We want to promote safe drone for everyone, and so if you own a drone or know someone who does, or if you are just curious on how to start making money with your drone then come join us on Friday, November 8th at 7pm (room TBA).

Eric Dittelman Tonight!

 

Ever wonder what it would be like to know what someone else was thinking? What if you knew exactly what someone else was going to do before they did it?

Eric Dittelman knows what that’s like and has been reading minds at theaters, colleges, comedy clubs, and corporate events all across the country.

Often known by just his surname, Dittelman combines amazing mind reading with stand-up and improv comedy. In 2012, he blew audiences away as the first-ever mind reader on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” where he was a season 7 semi-finalist and judges’ favorite. He has since appeared on “Ellen”, “Live with Kelly and Ryan” and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” where Penn called his act “bordering on genius!” He’s also been featured in “Entertainment Weekly”, “Rolling Stone”, and even “The National Enquirer”.

He has studied improv comedy with Upright Citizens Brigade, Improv Boston and Second City. He was nominated “Fastest Rising Star” and won 2015’s “Best Male Performer Award” by Campus Activities Magazine. In 2018, he made his Broadway debut appearing with “The Illusionists”.

Making a research poster for a conference or other event? This workshop covers basic tips and tricks for presenting your research and information in a visual format. We’ll also look at resources and tools available at the library to help you design and print your poster.
Introduction to Excel
October 31, 12:05-12:55pm in EERC 723. Registration Form
This session will be an introduction to the basic functions of Excel. We will cover tricks for entering data, formatting cells, and basic formulas and charts. The class may get to advanced formulas and conditional formatting; prior to the workshop, a questionnaire will be sent out to determine the level of Excel experience of participants.

The “Stars of American Ballet” Come to Houghton

 

Acclaimed Dancers of the New York City Ballet perform at the Rozsa this Saturday!

Harmonie Sacrae: KSO at St. Joseph’s Church Friday

The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra returns to historic Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church for an all-German program of sublime religious works by Bach, Brahms, Wagner, and Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony.

Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra (KSO) under the direction of conductor Joel Neves, joined by Guest Conductor Brandon Matthews, presents a concert of four works, by the great German composers J.S.Bach, Brahms, Wagner, and Mendelssohn, at 7:30 PM Friday in the beautiful, historic St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lake Linden.
