Today is K-Day!

K-Day is today!! Join us at Chassell Centennial Park from 12:00 – 4:00 PM. Free shuttle starts at 11:30 AM at the MUB and will make trips to the park and back until the end of the event. Student Leadership & Involvement will be closing at noon to attend K-Day, so come say hello to us at the check-in tent!


Welcome Week


You’ve gotten all settled in at Michigan Tech for the year and are about to start classes. Now what?  It’s time for Welcome Week!  Every year, new and returning students are welcomed back to campus with this annual tradition that will get everyone into the Husky Spirit.

Welcome Week is an on-campus experience that kick-starts every fall semester.  This tradition is designed to complement the Orientation experience, and provide opportunities to enhance academic and personal success for Tech students.  The week is jam packed with social activities, food, entertainment, and much more!

The Keweenaw Color Run is BACK!

Grab a friend! Invite your co-workers! Get your family excited! Let everyone know that The Keweenaw Color Run is back! Join the Keweenaw Young Professionals on September 8th, 2019 for a fun, untimed walk/run event for the whole office and family. During this five-kilometer run, participants will be blasted head to toe in different colored powders. Not only will participants get more colorful throughout the race, but each person will be provided with a color packet to kick off the race.

KCR Runners vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, The Keweenaw Color Run is an event for everyone! This event is designed to unite the diverse cultures and identities of the Upper Peninsula communities. Our goal is to get you out of your office, or home, surrounded by family and friends walking or running to a healthier us.

Want to find ways to develop your leaderships skills this semester? Come to the Fall 2019 HuskyLeads to gain some tips, tricks, and techniques for personal, organizational, and academic success. HuskyLeads are one hour long sessions for those who want to learn and elevate your leadership skills. Please see the image provided for more information on what workshop is provided and when.

USG Nominations Now Open

Nominations are open for Undergraduate Student Representatives. College of Engineering Representative, Third Year Representative, and Inter-Residence Housing Council (IRHC) Representative positions are open and we encourage you to nominate yourself or fellow students that you feel would represent the undergraduate students well.
Nominating someone is quick and easy – all you need to do is click on the link below to nominate yourself or fellow classmates for a representative position on the USG body.

Upper-Peninsula Wide Campus Bike Week

From September 9-13, Michigan Tech will be partnering with Northern Michigan University on our first ever UP-wide campus bike week! Below is the week of events.

Registration helps to ensure that bikes found without owners can be returned to the proper person. We will have other helpful resources to share with you as well, and if you are one of our first visitors that stops by with a bike, you get a free USB rechargable light!

Come have some fun with Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE!). Campus and local communities are invited to come meet our members, learn a few smart cycling skills, and enjoy a casual 8-10 mile ride on local roads and paths. The ride is no-drop, meaning nobody will be left behind, and there will be an option for a shortcut to the end. A helmet is required.


Bubble Soccer!
Come out and join MUB Board at the lower soccer fields for Bubble Soccer this coming Saturday, September 7 from 6:00PM -9:00PM. It is FREE to all who would like to participate and sign-ups are at the field when you show up. Grab a group of your friends or come by yourself, we’d love to have you on a team!

Student Health Fair 
Michigan Tech Wellness is hosting a Student Health Fair! On September 11th from 11:00AM -1:00PM at the CareerFEST Tent. They will have screenings for cholesterol, blood glucose, hemoglobin, body fat, body mass index, blood pressure, and skin. There will also be some fun giveaways, free massages, therapy dogs, fantastic foods, and more!

An Afternoon on the Town

On Saturday, August 31st from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM the annual Welcome Week event, An Afternoon on the Town, will take place. 

 An Afternoon on the Town is a Michigan Tech event that invites local businesses/services to welcome our students and show them what they have to offer. Starting on campus, down College Avenue, and throughout the downtown Houghton area, there will be music, refreshments, giveaways, and prizes for student participants.

Myq Kaplan (Myq is pronounced Mike) is a comedian from Brooklyn, NY. With his quirky sense of humor, Myq has delivered gut-busting entertainment to venues and viewers across the nation. He has made appearances on a variety of television shows, including the Tonight Show and the Late Show with David Letterman. He has been a finalist on Last Comic Standing and has even appeared on America’s Got Talent. Myq’s special “Small, Dork, and Handsome” debuted on Netflix and is now available on Amazon.

Students head to Chassell Centennial Park for an afternoon of food, fun, and music.  Kday typically sees 3500-4000 students so this is an important recruitment opportunity for your organization.  Please have your organization’s event finalized before registering HERE.

Mandal is an Atlanta-based stand-up comedian, writer, and actor. He is known for his energetic performances and absurd sense of humor. He is the cohost for Clown School, a podcast about life’s absurdities. He has opened for comedians such as Tig Notaro, Jamie Lee, and Donnell Rawlings. He has also performed at the Orlando Indie Comedy Festival, Memphis Comedy Festival, Nashville Comedy Festival and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival.

Join the Keweenaw Young Professionals on September 8th, 2019 for a fun, untimed walk/run event for the whole office and family. During this five-kilometer run, participants will be blasted head to toe in different colored powders. Not only will participants get more colorful throughout the race, but each person will be provided with a color packet to kick off the race.

KCR Runners vary in demographics and reasons for running. With no winners or official times, The Keweenaw Color Run is an event for everyone! This event is designed to unite the diverse cultures and identities of the Upper Peninsula communities. Our goal is to get you out of your office, or home, surrounded by family and friends walking or running to a healthier us.

Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise

Student Leadership & Involvement will be sponsoring a Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise on Lake Superior aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV.  The event will take place on Friday, August 9, 2019.  The bus to Copper Harbor will board at 6:00 pm in front of the Memorial Union Building, and is expected to return by 11:00 pm.

Contemplative Forest Art Walk
2019—Michigan Technological University’s
Visual and Performing Arts Department and
the Ford Center announce the opening of
Contemplative Forest Art Walk, a contemplative
art trail experience by Anne Beffel, Professor of Visual
and Performing Arts. Hand painted banners hanging
in the forest canopy mark meditation stations along
the short, contemplative path. Signage describes
different kinds of mindfulness practices and links to
guided meditations designed for mindfulness practice
in the forest. An additional station is located near the
entrance to the Canyon Falls trail. Contemplative Forest
Art Walk will open to the public on July 31, with a reception
from 5:00 – 6:30 PM at the Ford Center, 21235 Alberta Ave # 2, L’Anse, MI 49946. Parking is available at the at the conference center followed by a short walk past the tennis courts to the trailhead marked by signage. The art will remain installed for the
summer and fall seasons, as weather permits.

The SDC Summer Building Schedule

The SDC summer building schedule is now available. Summer hours will begin now through Sunday, August 25, 2019.

NOTE: The schedule pdf now contains a second page highlighting all open rec times in the SDC including these areas/activities: Fitness Center, locker rooms, multipurpose courts, indoor track, racquetball courts, ice arena public skating, OAP high ropes course, adult lap swim (no dive boards), open swim (4 lap lanes available), family swim (no lap lanes) and family swim/log rolling (no lap lanes).

Dates to remember:

Now through August 4 – Lap pool ONLY will be open (dive tank will be closed). See schedule for specific swim options/times.

August 5 – September 2

Both pools will be CLOSED for mechanical repairs and general maintenance. They are scheduled to reopen Tuesday, September 3.

Contemplative Forest Art Walk
2019—Michigan Technological University’s Visual and Performing Arts Department and the Ford Center announce the opening of Contemplative Forest Art Walk, a contemplative art trail experience by Anne Beffel, Professor of Visual and Performing Arts. Hand-painted banners hanging in the forest canopy mark meditation stations along the short, contemplative path. Signage describes different kinds of mindfulness practices and links to guided meditations designed for mindfulness practice in the forest. An additional station is located near the entrance to the Canyon Falls trail. Contemplative Forest Art Walk will open to the public on July 31, with a reception from 5:00 – 6:30 PM at the Ford Center, 21235 Alberta Ave # 2, L’Anse, MI 49946. Parking is available at the conference center followed by a short walk past the tennis courts to the trailhead marked by signage. The art will remain installed for the summer and fall seasons, as weather permits.

Student Leadership & Involvement will be sponsoring a Copper Harbor Sunset Cruise on Lake Superior aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV.  The event will take place on Friday, August 9, 2019.  The bus to Copper Harbor will board at 6:00 pm in front of the Memorial Union Building, and is expected to return by 11:00 pm.

Sign up begins now in the Student Leadership & Involvement office, MUB 112.  Our hours are 8 am – 4 pm weekdays.  The cost of the event is $5.00.  You must sign up and pay cash in person and present your student ID.  Seats are limited, so do not delay!  Any questions, call Student Leadership & Involvement at 906-487-1963 or email activities@mtu.edu.
