Participating volunteers will have their registration fees refunded directly after the conference. Many volunteers are needed, so please consider this opportunity!

The SDC Summer Building Schedule

The SDC summer building schedule is now available. Summer hours will begin Sunday, May 5 and run through Sunday, August 25, 2019.

NOTE: The schedule pdf now contains a second page highlighting all open rec times in the SDC including these areas/activities: Fitness Center, locker rooms, multipurpose courts, indoor track, racquetball courts, ice arena public skating, OAP high ropes course, adult lap swim (no dive boards), open swim (4 lap lanes available), family swim (no lap lanes) and family swim/log rolling (no lap lanes).

Dates to remember:

May 27 and July 4 – The SDC will be closed for the holidays.

May 5-10 – Annual steam shutdown (no hot water in the SDC, but we will remain open).

May 5 – August 4 – Lap pool ONLY will be open (dive tank will be closed). See schedule for specific swim options/times.

June 4

The Ice arena re-opens (this is approximate with install beginning May 28).

August 5 – September 2

Both pools will be CLOSED for mechanical repairs and general maintenance. They are scheduled to reopen Tuesday, September 3.

A National Pastime: Choir Concert Friday Celebrates Universality of Singing

The Michigan Tech Concert Choir and ConScience Michigan Tech Chamber Singers present “A National Pastime,” at Friday, April 26 7:30 p.m. in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts.

Choral singing is the most popular form of participation in the performing arts in America. In Canada, it has more participants than hockey. Around the world and through the ages people have gathered to sing together. This concert celebrates the idea of community singing with popular songs, folk songs, and art songs from many different countries and communities. The audience will even be invited to participate in singing beloved tunes.

Jared Anderson, choir director, discusses the diverse music presented in the performance: “We will be singing songs from Syria, India, New Zealand, Samoa, Ireland, South Africa, Korea, and the United States. The music will represent a kind of choral melting-pot for our audience.”

The Michigan Tech Concert Choir is a select ensemble of students and community singers studying and performing choral literature ranging from Gregorian Chant to Renaissance motets, masses and madrigals to fascinating new works by living composers. conScience: Michigan Tech Chamber Singers is a select, student-only chamber choir of 24 voices.

Tickets are on sale now, $13 for adults, $5 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Superior Wind Symphony Honors Shakespeare’s Music with “A Thousand Twangling Instruments”

 The Superior Wind Symphony and Campus Concert Band present “A Thousand Twangling Instruments,” on Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Honoring Shakespeare’s love and appreciation of music, the event features pieces used by Shakespeare in his plays, along with popular songs of the Bard’s time and music written in his honor. The concert also explores the songs of other poets praising the values of music, love and art.

Composers represented are: Duke Ellington, Leonard Bernstein, Susan Botti, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Thomas Tallis, John Mackey, Michael Praetorius, Joseph Schillinger (featuring Libby Meyer on the theremin), Pentatonix, and Katherine Bergman, a Minnesota composer with a brand new piece about Isle Royale.

According to Superior Wind Symphony band leader Mike Christianson, “The Superior Wind Symphony is the premier wind ensemble at Michigan Tech. Superior Winds concerts offer symphonic thrills, innovative programming, fruitful collaborations and exciting premieres.”

Finish Ticket

Memorial Union Board presents: Finish Ticket! Saturday, April 20, at 9 pm, in the SDC Varsity Gym. The Headliner will be the famous Finish Ticket, and the opening act will be Coach Kline (a Tech student Band).

Live music, doors open at 8:30 pm and it’s free for everyone!

Must have an Michigan Tech ID with you to get in. General public can get in free as well.

OAP Silent Gear Auction

The Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) will host its 12th annual gear auction Saturday, April 20, from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Gates Tennis Center. New this year, OAP is coordinating with Athletics to auction some of their

surplus equipment as well as used OAP gear.

Need to clear out your garage or storage unit? OAP wants to help you with your spring cleaning. Either have OAP sell your gently used (but still usable) outdoor recreation equipment on your behalf or consider donating it to the OAP and we’ll use any proceeds to help purchase new equipment for the OAP rental program.

Items can be dropped off April 17-19 at the OAP during regular business hours.

Anyone interested in purchasing at the gear auction will need to register at the at the Gates Tennis Center the day of the event.

Celebrate Student Artists

Join us to celebrate student artists at Michigan Tech, and spend a relaxing evening enjoying artworks created in Visual Arts courses. The exhibit will be in an open house format Friday, April 19 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition will be held in two locations; the hallway galleries outside of Walker 209, on the second floor of Michigan Tech’s Walker Arts & Humanities bldg., and at the Studio for Here and Now, G04W Wadsworth Hall, across from WMTU.

This event is free and open to the public!

Semi-Annual Student Showcase – “Rock, Paper, Scissors”

The department of Visual and Performing Arts announces its semi-annual student showcase, “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” featuring works of art created by Michigan Tech students in Project Learning Lab. Project Learning Lab is an innovative arts classroom based inside Rozsa gallery b. An opening reception will be held from  Friday, April 19th 5:00 to 6:30 pm. The exhibition runs Friday through Monday, April 19-22. Gallery hours are M-F 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and 1:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturdays, and the exhibition is free and open to the public. The reception is free and all are welcome.

The works on display were created by students in Lisa Gordillo’s Traditional Sculpture Studio. Students from many campus disciplines are represented, including business, math, engineering and theatre. Students in the class study sculptural traditions from around the world, and create three-dimensional works using those traditions as a guide. This year, the class focused on Guatemalan cultures, and created barriletes (giant kites), nawales (personal symbols informed by the Mayan calendar) and Estelas (large carvings).

Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra

The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra presents Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Popularized in Disney’s “Fantasia,” Rhapsody in Blue will be performed along with the haunting ballet music to Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and the angst-ridden Chamber Symphony of Schoenberg.

Tickets are on sale now, $19 for adults, $6 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Tau Trot

Alpha Sigma Tau and Phi Kappa Tau will host their 1st annual Tau Trot Run/Walk Saturday, April 20, at 10:00 am. The race will begin in Hancock and end in Houghton. 

Want to help support a great cause? All proceeds will go to support Girls on the Run and the SeriousFun Children’s Network. Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt upon signing up. If you are not able to make it to race day, but would still like to participate, we have the option of a virtual 5k, in which you can run the race on your own time!

Spring Gallery Exhibition Salon!

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Rozsa Center are excited to announce the spring gallery exhibition, Salon!, curated by gallery director and Michigan Tech associate professor of art, Lisa Gordillo. It features works of art and writing by more than 30 artists and writers. Gordillo is excited to present an older arts tradition with a contemporary twist. She drew much of her inspiration for this show from Jewish Women’s Salons, which focused on inclusivity, diversity, and contemporary dialogue. Works of art will also pepper the Rozsa lobby, creating sitting spaces and areas for conversation. Salon! runs Now – April 20 in Michigan Tech’s A-Space Gallery, hours are M-F 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and 1:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturdays, and the exhibition is free and open to the public.

A Succulent Study Break

The MUB Board is hosting a Succulent Study Break event that we are having at Tech. There will be events held Tuesday, April 23rd, from 6 pm to 8 pm, in the MUB Commons.

To relax before finals we’ll be potting succulents . There will be different kinds of succulents as well as decorative pots to put them in.

Husky Innovate Speaker Series Event on April 26th

The Innovation Center for Entrepreneurship will host its second Husky Innovate Speaker Series on Friday, April 26, from 12-1 pm in the Pavlis Honors College Collaboration Space (M&M 722). Faculty, students, and staff are invited to join us for a talk given by Michigan Tech’s Dr. Brad King. King is the Ron and Elaine Starr Professor in Space Systems in the department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics. He also serves as the faculty advisor for Aerospace Enterprise, is Director of the Space Systems Research Group, and the CEO of Orbion Space Technology.

King will discuss the “small satellite revolution”, Orbion’s value proposition of affordable, reliable electric propulsion for your small satellite mission, how his team approaches innovation, and how advances in technology such as Orbion’s have disrupted the space industry.

If you are an innovator or entrepreneur working on an idea with the goal of launching your own business, you are highly encouraged to attend. Registration is required, and attendance will be capped at 30. Lunch will be provided to the first 30 people to register. Please register no later than Tuesday, April 23rd.

Whosah for 906 Night

The 906 Night event will feature the group Whosah! Come and see Whosah and enjoy the live music. There will be events held Tonight – Friday, April 12th, at 9:06 pm, in the MUB Commons.

These guys are doing what they love… making friends and making music. Whosah delivers an experience that forms a musical bond not quickly forgotten. The group thrives in environments both large and small, performing shows as intimate as college dorms and as large as music festivals.

Whosah won the University of Minnesota’s Battle of the Bands and has been featured on the Netflix original series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt,” MTV’s Snookie and JWow and Target’s back to school campaign.

Sunday in the Park with George

The Rozsa Center, Department of Visual and Performing Arts, and Tech Theatre Company are proud to present the 25^th Anniversary Season theatre finale, Sunday in the Park with George, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts Thursday – Saturday, April 11 – 13, 7:30 pm. Starring Michigan Tech’s Jonah Schulte, third-year Computer Science major, as “George One” and “George Two,” and Katy Gula, third-year Environmental Engineering major, as Dot, Sunday in the Park with George is a fully staged musical with live orchestra. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s lyrical celebration of art, love, and children merges image, music, and performance to explore the depths of human understanding. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and staged around the world, Sunday in the Park with George explains the simple essence of life we can all understand.

Music for MEDLIFE Concert

MEDLIFE at MTU is hosting their annual concert in order to raise funds for their Service Learning Trips and mobile clinics, taking place this summer of 2019 in Cusco, Peru! There will be music by local MTU groups Full Send Jazz Combo and Dedos Blancos! Student tickets cost $5 pre-sale and $7 at the door; General Admission tickets cost $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door! MEDLIFE MTU is a volunteer/non-profit organization and all proceeds go towards the Service Learning Trips, mobile clinics, and development projects. Come support MEDLIFE!!!

Tech’s Got Talent!

Tech’s Got Talent! Think America’s Got Talent…wait to see what Tech has. There will be admins, students, and teachers as judges. Students can demonstrate their talent in an attempt to win the prize. We will have prizes for the first second and third place people. Winners will be chosen by students via i clickers from the top 5 chosen by the judges. Students can submit their act through https://bit.ly/2TwmacY. Groups are capped at 6 unless they contact us with a special request. If people are in a group, they share the prize. Performers can practice in the MUB Commons, on Saturday, April 13th,  from 1-6 pm.”

Scavenger Hunt

The MUB Board is hosting a Scavenger Hunt event here at Tech. There will be events held the week of April 14th, all week, on campus. This will be a photo scavenger hunt where some will win prizes. Find clues on MUB Facebook, solve riddles and get a selfie with the object or location to win points. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners that will be announced on Saturday, April 20th.

Superior Health Foundation Community Ambassadors in Health Scholarship

Do you have an interest in contributing to the health and wellness of the local community through partnering with a service-oriented organization? Are you an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at Michigan Tech? Consider applying for the Superior Health Foundation Community Ambassadors in Health Scholarship.

Undergraduate scholarship recipients will receive $500 for the semester they participate in the program. Graduate scholarship recipients will receive $1000. Students will partner with a service-oriented organization, such as organizations addressing health care, food security, mental health, obesity, health education, environmental health, etc. Residents of the Upper Peninsula are especially encouraged to apply and will be given priority consideration. Check out our site for more detailed information on eligibility and how to apply.

Last Day to send out Tax Forms

Reminder! The last day to send out tax forms at the Campus Store is Monday, April 15th by 12 noon. Remember that if you are sending it USPS, it is cash or check only.

OAP Silent Gear Auction

The Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) will host its 12th annual gear auction Saturday, April 20, from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Gates Tennis Center. New this year, OAP is coordinating with Athletics to auction some of their

surplus equipment as well as used OAP gear.

Need to clear out your garage or storage unit? OAP wants to help you with your spring cleaning. Either have OAP sell your gently used (but still usable) outdoor recreation equipment on your behalf or consider donating it to the OAP and we’ll use any proceeds to help purchase new equipment for the OAP rental program.

Items can be dropped off April 17-19 at the OAP during regular business hours.

Anyone interested in purchasing at the gear auction will need to register at the at the Gates Tennis Center the day of the event.

Memorial Union Board presents: Finish Ticket! Saturday, April 20, at 9 pm, in the SDC Varsity Gym. The Headliner will be the famous Finish Ticket, and the opening act will be Coach Kline (a Tech student Band).

Live music, doors open at 8:30 pm and it’s free for everyone!

Must have an Michigan Tech ID with you to get in. General public can get in free as well.

Tau Trot

Alpha Sigma Tau and Phi Kappa Tau will host their 1st annual Tau Trot Run/Walk Saturday, April 20, at 10:00 am. The race will begin in Hancock and end in Houghton. 

Want to help support a great cause? All proceeds will go to support Girls on the Run and the SeriousFun Children’s Network. Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt upon signing up. If you are not able to make it to race day, but would still like to participate, we have the option of a virtual 5k, in which you can run the race on your own time!

Spring Gallery Exhibition Salon!

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Rozsa Center are excited to announce the spring gallery exhibition, Salon!, curated by gallery director and Michigan Tech associate professor of art, Lisa Gordillo. It features works of art and writing by more than 30 artists and writers. Gordillo is excited to present an older arts tradition with a contemporary twist. She drew much of her inspiration for this show from Jewish Women’s Salons, which focused on inclusivity, diversity, and contemporary dialogue. Works of art will also pepper the Rozsa lobby, creating sitting spaces and areas for conversation. Salon! runs Now – April 20 in Michigan Tech’s A-Space Gallery, hours are M-F 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and 1:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturdays, and the exhibition is free and open to the public.

A Succulent Study Break

The MUB Board is hosting a Succulent Study Break event that we are having at Tech. There will be events held Tuesday, April 23rd, from 6 pm to 8 pm, in the MUB Commons.

Tech Arts Festival

The Copper Country Edition of Tech Arts Festival will hold a Painting Night on Tuesday, April 2nd from 6 – 8 pm in the MUB Commons, then on Thursday, April 4th a Picture Frame Night from 6 – 8 pm in the MUB Commons, then on Friday, April 5th a Photography Competition will be due by 5 pm.

Often compared to Bo Burnham for his quick wit and hilarious songs, Brian’s show makes fun of the pop-culture of today, while relating to the college experience. Brian has performed at over 300 schools across the country, and in 2015, he was voted “Roommate of The Year” by his two roommates.”

The Pavlis Honors College is now accepting applications for Fall 2019. Students are eligible to apply to join if they have 2 or more years remaining on campus. Pavlis offers 6 distinct pathways on which students may build their honors program:

The 906 Night event will feature the group Whosah! Come and see Whosah and enjoy the live music. There will be events held Friday, April 12th, at 9:06 pm, in the MUB Commons.

These guys are doing what they love… making friends and making music. Whosah delivers an experience that forms a musical bond not quickly forgotten. The group thrives in environments both large and small, performing shows as intimate as college dorms and as large as music festivals.

Whosah won the University of Minnesota’s Battle of the Bands and has been featured on the Netflix original series “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt,” MTV’s Snookie and JWow and Target’s back to school campaign.

Sunday in the Park with George

The Rozsa Center, Department of Visual and Performing Arts, and Tech Theatre Company are proud to present the 25^th Anniversary Season theatre finale, Sunday in the Park with George, at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts Thursday – Saturday, April 11 – 13, 7:30 pm. Starring Michigan Tech’s Jonah Schulte, third-year Computer Science major, as “George One” and “George Two,” and Katy Gula, third-year Environmental Engineering major, as Dot, Sunday in the Park with George is a fully staged musical with live orchestra. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s lyrical celebration of art, love, and children merges image, music, and performance to explore the depths of human understanding. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and staged around the world, Sunday in the Park with George explains the simple essence of life we can all understand.

Tickets are on sale now, $19 for adults, $6 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Get ready to join us on Saturday,  March 30th at 10 pm in the MUB Ballroom as we welcome comedian, Orlando Baxter. He exploded onto the Boston comedy scene in 2005, and quickly established himself as one of the areas hottest young comics. In 2007 Orlando was a finalist in NBC’s ‘Stand Up for Diversity Showcase’. His fresh perspective and unique relatability quickly solidified this high school teacher into a fan favorite. In 2010, he became a finalist in both the New York Comedy Contest and the Boston Comedy Festival. And in 2012 he toured across the country with national headliner Jo Koy, as the opening act in the “Lights Out” tour. In 2014 Orlando made his second TV appearance on AXS TV’s “Gotham Live.” He was also a finalist at the prestigious Montreux Comedy festival in Switzerland. In 2018, he performed stand-up on TBS’ Conan. Orlando is a regular headliner at numerous comedy clubs throughout New England, and performs all over the country. It’ll be a great night for sure!

2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Pavlis Honors College will be hosting the 7th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium being held on Friday, March 29th  from 1-5 pm in the lobby of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The Symposium highlights the cutting-edge research being conducted on Michigan Tech’s campus by some of our best and brightest undergraduate students. Student presentations represent a wide array of scientific and engineering disciplines from across campus and highlight the diversity of research areas being explored.

 Shakespeare As You’ve Never Seen It Before! 

See The Complete Works of William Shakespeare 

Love Shakespeare? You’ll love this show. Hate Shakespeare? You’ll love this show! Think Monty Python meets Saturday Night Live meets the Bard. The raucously entertaining Reduced Shakespeare Company (RSC) will perform “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. Join these madcap men in tights as they weave their wicked way through 37 plays in 97 minutes. London’s longest-running comedy, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” is a fast-paced romp through the Bard’s entire dramatic anthology. The show has been seen at the Kennedy Center, Off-Broadway, and from sea to shining sea.

Annual Bounce-O-Rama

The Michigan Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will host the annual Bounce-O-Rama event inside the Student Development Complex for all area youth on Sunday, March 31, from noon to 5 p.m. The event will be a charity fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters in conjunction with Copper Country Strong.

Michigan Tech student-athletes will staff the event. In addition to inflatable bounce houses, there will be other activities such as face painting, music, and more.

Tickets for the Bouce-O-Rama are $12 at the door or $10 in advance by topping at or calling the SDC Ticket Office (906-487-2073). The event is open to children ages 2-12. Adults are admitted for free with their children.

Pavlis Honors Pathway Program Now Accepting Applications

The Pavlis Honors College is now accepting applications for Fall 2019. Students are eligible to apply to join if they have 2 or more years remaining on campus. Pavlis offers 6 distinct pathways on which students may build their honors program:

Each of these pathways provides a framework of support, exceptional resources and a community of scholars for students interested in challenging themselves, doing more and making a difference. Tech’s Got Talent!

Tech’s Got Talent! Think America’s Got Talent…wait to see what Tech has. There will be admins, students, and teachers as judges. Students can demonstrate their talent in an attempt to win the prize. We will have prizes for the first second and third place people. Winners will be chosen by students via i clickers from the top 5 chosen by the judges. Students can submit their act through https://bit.ly/2TwmacY. Groups are capped at 6 unless they contact us with a special request. If people are in a group, they share the prize. Performers can practice in the MUB Commons, on Saturday, April 13th,  from 1-6 pm.”

Scavenger Hunt

The MUB Board is hosting a Scavenger Hunt event here at Tech. There will be events held the week of April 14th, all week, on campus. This will be a photo scavenger hunt where some will win prizes. Find clues on MUB Facebook, solve riddles and get a selfie with the object or location to win points. There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners that will be announced on Saturday, April 20th.

Superior Health Foundation Community Ambassadors in Health Scholarship

Do you have an interest in contributing to the health and wellness of the local community through partnering with a service-oriented organization? Are you an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at Michigan Tech? Consider applying for the Superior Health Foundation Community Ambassadors in Health Scholarship.

Undergraduate scholarship recipients will receive $500 for the semester they participate in the program. Graduate scholarship recipients will receive $1000. Students will partner with a service-oriented organization, such as organizations addressing health care, food security, mental health, obesity, health education, environmental health, etc. Residents of the Upper Peninsula are especially encouraged to apply and will be given priority consideration. Check out our site for more detailed information on eligibility and how to apply.

OAP Silent Gear Auction

The Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) will host its 12th annual gear auction Saturday, April 20, from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Gates Tennis Center. New this year, OAP is coordinating with Athletics to auction some of their surplus equipment as well as used OAP gear.

Need to clear out your garage or storage unit? OAP wants to help you with your spring cleaning. Either have OAP sell your gently used (but still usable) outdoor recreation equipment on your behalf or consider donating it to the OAP and we’ll use any proceeds to help purchase new equipment for the OAP rental program.

Items can be dropped off April 17-19 at the OAP during regular business hours.

Anyone interested in purchasing at the gear auction will need to register at the at the Gates Tennis Center the day of the event.

Tau Trot

Alpha Sigma Tau and Phi Kappa Tau will host their 1st annual Tau Trot Run/Walk Saturday, April 20, at 10:00 am. The race will begin in Hancock and end in Houghton. 

Want to help support a great cause? All proceeds will go to support Girls on the Run and the SeriousFun Children’s Network. Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt upon signing up. If you are not able to make it to race day, but would still like to participate, we have the option of a virtual 5k, in which you can run the race on your own time!

Spring Gallery Exhibition Salon!

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the Rozsa Center are excited to announce the spring gallery exhibition, Salon!, curated by gallery director and Michigan Tech associate professor of art, Lisa Gordillo. It features works of art and writing by more than 30 artists and writers. Gordillo is excited to present an older arts tradition with a contemporary twist. She drew much of her inspiration for this show from Jewish Women’s Salons, which focused on inclusivity, diversity, and contemporary dialogue. Works of art will also pepper the Rozsa lobby, creating sitting spaces and areas for conversation. Salon! runs Now – April 20 in Michigan Tech’s A-Space Gallery, hours are M-F 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and 1:00 – 8:00 pm on Saturdays, and the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Jay Filson to Perform

Singer/songwriter and Michigan native Jay Filson released his debut EP in 2016. He has honed his sound over the last few years, performing at colleges and local venues throughout the country. Somewhere between Ed Sheeran and Jon McLaughlin, Filson puts on a one-of-a-kind show by looping beatboxing, vocals, piano, and guitar all live on the spot. Jay was the winner of Nashville’s 2017 SoBro Star talent search and currently lives in Nashville as a full-time musician.

The event will be in the MUB Commons, Friday, March 22nd,  from 9:06 pm to 10:30 pm.

Annual Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert

Join the Michigan Tech Jazz Ensembles for the annual Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert Friday, March 22 7:30 pm, in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The annual Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert pays tribute to the originator of the Michigan Tech Jazz Studies Program. Featured will be the Research and Development Big Band and the Jazz Lab Band performing a wide array of jazz compositions from the broad history of jazz. Two awards are given in Keranen’s name each year to the Outstanding Jazz Musician of the year and the Most Improved Jazz Musician. The 2018 awards will be given during the program. Director Mike Christianson brings his professional jazz experience to the programming of this annual concert.

Tickets for the Don Keranen Memorial Jazz Concert are on sale now, $15 for adults, $5 for youth and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee. Tickets are available by phone at 487-2073, online, in person at the Central Ticket Office in the SDC or at the Rozsa Box Office the evening of the performance. Air Play at the Rozsa

The Rozsa Center is pleased to announce “Air Play” is bringing their world-renowned fun-for-all ages circus-style event for one night only, on Saturday, March 23! Flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen! Air Play is a modern spectacle, part circus, part theater, that brings to life the air we breathe: A circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal land, transforming the ordinary into objects of uncommon beauty.

Class Tribute Program

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS GRADUATING IN May 2019: The Michigan Tech Student Foundation (MTSF) and the Student Philanthropy Council invite you to make your upcoming commencement day even more meaningful by participating in the Class Tribute Program.  For $10, your tribute to them will be printed in the commencement program and displayed on the arena videoboard. Iranian Community New Year

Iranian community at Michigan Tech celebrates the new year (Norooz) to share Iranian new year tradition at Michigan Tech. Everyone is invited to join us to celebrate the beginning of spring together. This year our event includes Iranian banquet, traditional dance performances by our organization members, Iranian clssic live music and stand up comedy. Our event is Sunday, March 24, from 6-9 pm, followed by one hour fun after-party. Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for non students. Early bird tickets are also available for $10. Tickets selling in the MUB Commons, March 18th until 22nd. The celebration is in the MUB Ballroom Sunday, March 24 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

Arduino Workshop

Tuesday, March 26 from 5-7

It’s going to be held in the Alley Makerspace (Basement of MUB). You’ll learn how to program the Arduino microcontroller and how to use some electrical components to have your software interact with the real world. The workshop spans for three weeks. Please make sure to bring a laptop along with you.

Undergraduate Research Internship Program (URIP) Applications Due March 27

 The Pavlis Honors College would like to remind undergraduate students that URIP 2019-20 applications are due Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

The internship program is open to any undergraduate student on campus. Students are welcome to apply with faculty with whom they are already working.

The program consists of a 20-week internship (September – March) as well as professional development activities centered on academic research and scholarship.

The Pavlis Honors College will provide $800 in funding for the student intern, with the expectation that faculty will provide matching funds to be dispensed concurrently, resulting in a total of $1600 (or $10/hr for 8 hours per week for a period of 20 weeks). Faculty may make use of research funds, IRAD, startup packages, or consult their chairs, deans or center/institute management to identify the source of their match.

2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Pavlis Honors College will be hosting the 7th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium being held on Friday, March 29th  from 1-5 pm in the lobby of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts. The Symposium highlights the cutting-edge research being conducted on Michigan Tech’s campus by some of our best and brightest undergraduate students. Student presentations represent a wide array of scientific and engineering disciplines from across campus and highlight the diversity of research areas being explored.

Get ready to join us on March 30th at 10 pm in the MUB Ballroom as we welcome comedian, Orlando Baxter. He exploded onto the Boston comedy scene in 2005, and quickly established himself as one of the areas hottest young comics. In 2007 Orlando was a finalist in NBC’s ‘Stand Up for Diversity Showcase’. His fresh perspective and unique relatability quickly solidified this high school teacher into a fan favorite. In 2010, he became a finalist in both the New York Comedy Contest and the Boston Comedy Festival. And in 2012 he toured across the country with national headliner Jo Koy, as the opening act in the “Lights Out” tour. In 2014 Orlando made his second TV appearance on AXS TV’s “Gotham Live.” He was also a finalist at the prestigious Montreux Comedy festival in Switzerland. In 2018, he performed stand-up on TBS’ Conan. Orlando is a regular headliner at numerous comedy clubs throughout New England, and performs all over the country. It’ll be a great night for sure!

Annual Bounce-O-Rama

The Michigan Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will host the annual Bounce-O-Rama event inside the Student Development Complex for all area youth on Sunday, March 31, from noon to 5 p.m. The event will be a charity fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters in conjunction with Copper Country Strong.

Michigan Tech student-athletes will staff the event. In addition to inflatable bounce houses, there will be other activities such as face painting, music, and more.

Tickets for the Bouce-O-Rama are $12 at the door or $10 in advance by topping at or calling the SDC Ticket Office (906-487-2073). The event is open to children ages 2-12. Adults are admitted for free with their children.
