The Spring 2018 schedule is as follows:   HuskyLEAD A

Thursday, February 1 – “Know Your Role – Tips for Leading and Following in a Team.”  An effective team uses all members to get the most out of each person.  Learning which role you need to fill on a team can be vital to the success and efficiency of your group.  We will focus on finding your fit in the team and skills that you can use with any group.  This session will involve audience participation for most of the activities.  The presenters are Jared Johnson and the Outdoor Adventure Team.

Thursday, February 15 – “Leveraging Leadership Skills with Employers.”  You don’t have to be in a leadership position to be a leader.  Learn innovative strategies to showcase your best self to future employers.  The presenters are Career Services and Doug Stage from Kimberly Clark.

Thursday, March 22 – “Leading with Inclusivity:  How to impact Your World with Intentional and Inclusive Actions, Language and Purpose.”  This workshop will raise your awareness and understanding of how to recognize how our conscious and subconscious actions affect others and how we can shift our behaviors to create a more welcoming and inclusive community.  The presenter is Amy Howard from the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

Thursday, April 5 – “Mindfulness 101:  Improve Focus and Reduce Stress Before Finals.”  Learn the basics of mindfulness to help you reduce stress and increase your focus for final exams.  The practice of mindfulness can be applied to starting a new job or internship, or just reducing daily stress and living more fully in the present.  The presenter is Joan Kero, health coach and yoga instructor.

LA Theater Works Presents – The Mountaintop at the Rozsa Center

This year, in conjunction with Michigan Tech’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, and the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Martin Luther King Jr., the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and Michigan Tech’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion are proud to present LA Theatre Work’s brand new production of Katori Hall’s play, The Mountaintop. On the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated outside room 306 of The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. See The Mountaintop at the Rozsa Center on Tuesday, January 23rd, at 7:30 PM. There will also be a panel discussion and Q & A with student members of Michigan Tech’s National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), L.A. Join The Meeting for USG Budget Hearing Process

So what is the USG budget hearing process? It’s the process by which Registered Student Organizations can receive funding for the following school year from the Student Activity Fee. The Undergraduate Student Government oversees the disbursement of these funds every year, with the opportunity for organizations to receive this funding happening every spring. If your organization would like to be funded by the Student Activity Fee for the 2018-2019 school year, this email and process pertain to you.

So what is the first step? The first step in the process is the Mandatory SAF Info Session. For your organization to be eligible for SAF funding, a representative from your organization must be present and sign-in to this info session. This info session will take place on Wednesday, January 24, in Fisher 135. The session will start at 6:00PM, and should last 25 – 30 minutes. Please plan to arrive 10 – 15 minutes ahead of time in order to sign in and receive your informational packets at the door.

At this meeting you will be given all the information needed to get started planning a budget and submitting the required documents. At this info session I will be going over a detailed timeline that includes submission deadlines. As a reminder, only open student organizations are eligible for SAF funding. If you are not sure if your organization is eligible, I invite you to attend this information session to see.

(Note: If your organization does not want SAF funding for the 18’ – 19’ school year, it is not required that you attend this info session. SBG’s are also not required to attend this info session.)

Huskies Helping Huskies

The 2018 CopperDog 150 sled dog race is fast approaching, and we need your help!  The CopperDog is a 150 mile, 3 day race that traverses the Keweenaw Peninsula March 2nd thru 4th.  It takes hundreds of volunteers to put on this unique and exciting event.  In the past, MTU students have had a great time working as dog handlers or crossing guards along the trail.

“I can honestly say CopperDog is one of the most exciting volunteering events all year.” Says Devin Leonarduzzi, MTU alum. “Mushers and their dog teams travel to the Keweenaw from all over the world, so the hospitality and support from our community is awesome to see.  You’ll feel the energy and know you’re part of something big.”

The first leg of the event, on Friday March 2nd, is a niHuskies dogs picturesght race from Calumet to Eagle Harbor.  Teams then travel to Copper Harbor on Saturday, and all the way back to Calumet on Sunday.  All volunteers are encouraged to attend training at Calumet High school from 11am-1pm on February 24th.

You can sign up as just yourself, a small group of friends, or a student organization.  The complete list of volunteer opportunities is available at www.copperdog150.com

Ken Steiner Memorial Benefit to Support

Little Brothers: Friends of the Elderly

When longtime local resident Ken Steiner passed away suddenly last January, family, friends, and the entire community came together for a memorial to celebrate all the lives he touched through his decades of good work to make the Keweenaw, and the world, a better place. From a long list of friends playing the music to the majority of area restaurants where he worked providing food, there was an overwhelming outpouring of love, support and good will. And, above all a strong sense that the work Ken championed, the positive energy and creative spirit he inspired, would continue, carried forward by those who knew and loved him.

This year, the Rozsa Center and the Michigan Tech Visual and Performing Arts Department want to extend that spirit and good will, by hosting a benefit in Ken’s honor for his favorite charity: Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, featuring good food, a cash bar, and once again a host of Ken’s friends and former band mates making the music, on Friday, January 12 at 6:30 pm to 11:30 pm, in the Rozsa Center Lobby. Ticket prices are: $10/$20/$30/donation of your choice. 100% of ticket sales will be donated in Ken’s name to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.

Bands featured: Steve Jones And The Garden City Hot Club at 7:00 PM. Uncle Pete’s All Star BBQ Blues Band at 8:15 PM. And, Outlaw’d at 9:30 PM. Ticket prices are in a range of “donation levels,” so that everken 3yone who attends can support the fundraiser at a level they choose.

To purchase tickets, please call  (906) 487-2073, go online at mtu.edu/rozsa, or visit Ticketing Operations at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Complex (SDC). Tickets will also be available at the Rozsa Box office the evening of the benefit. The Rozsa Box Office opens two hours before event times.

Michigan Tech Concert Choir and Superior Wind Symphony Presents:

The Sound from Within Us

The Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts and Department of Visual and Performing Arts present a concert by the Michigan Tech Concert Choir and Superior Wind Symphony titled The Sound from Within Us,” an evening of celebratory music, this Saturday, December 16, at 7:30 pm, in the Rozsa Center. The concert celebrates themes of common humanity with varied instrumentation and beautiful texts, and will feature music by American and British composers, including Vincent Persichetti’s Celebrations, Lee Hoiby’s Hymn for a New Age, Charles Ives’ Psalm 90 and Circus Band, and John Rutter’s Gloria.  .

According to Michael Christianson, Michigan Tech’s Director of Bands, “From the many possible ways humans have invented for making music, groups of singers and wind instrumentalists have in common that the human breath initiates all sounds. Jared [Jared Anderson, Chair, Visual and Performing Arts Department, and Choirs Director] and I first just wanted to make music together, because we like to do different things and this combination is surprisingly rare. There are many more instruments that are struck, bowed, plucked, etc. that are ‘inspired by expiration.’ And the human voice is the first true musical instrument, the most universal, so it seemed like a logical conclusion to concertize together. Our repertoire focus started out as “American,” but we were enamored with some other great musical opportunities. We will offer the work of stellar composers: Charles Ives, Vincent Persichetti, John Rutter, and Lee Hoiby, as well as the words of Walt Whitman. All words in English.

Anderson adds, The Sound from Within Us celebrates the fact that wind players and singers both create music by using perhaps our most common trait, breath.  The capacity to make beautiful sounds is within us all. The texts of the music that will be performed emphasize what we share as individuals and communities, the need for connection and kindness. It is a great opportunity to hear beautiful music and to celebrate in the midst of the holiday season.”

Tickets for The Sound from Within Us are on sale now, $15 for adults, $5 for youth, and no charge for Michigan Tech students with the Experience Tech fee, available by phone at (906) 487-2073, online at mtu.edu/rozsa, in person at the Central Ticketing Office in the Student Development Complex, or at the Rozsa Box Office the evening of the performance. Please note the Rozsa Box Office only opens two hours prior to performances.

Comedian Opey Olagbaju

Come join us for our last comedian of the semester, Opey!
Saturday, December 2, 2017, in the MUB Ballroom at 10 PM!
Bring your friends!
Opey poster
Opeyemi “Opey” Olagbaju’s love and commitment to stand-up are always apparent on stage. The Los Angeles comic performs across the city and has successfully showcased in several festivals, such as the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, the World Series of Comedy and previous NACA Showcases (2014 West & Central and 2015 Nationals). He is noted for his observational humor, which stems from his personal experiences as an immigrant from Nigeria who assimilated into American culture and society. Through comedy, Opey explores what makes us different, and more importantly, how these differences make us all the same.

Come Celebrate with the Big Horns: TUBACHRISTMAS Returns to the Rozsa

While we may not have ‘snow’ by this Sunday, Sunday, Dec. 3, we will have one of the surest signs of the Holiday season: TUBACHRISTMAS! TUBACHRISTMAS (it is always capitalized and connected a’ la rail car, tuba players LOVE TUBACHRISTMAS!) is an annual December event that occurs in honor of the first truly great tuba virtuoso, William “Bill” Bell who was born on Christmas Day.

Tubists gather yearly in mass numbers around the globe to play songs of the season in performances free to the public. We had our first one in many years here in Houghton last year, and we had 37 tubists! In fact, the great state of Michigan ranks 3rd in the US with 17 TUBACHRISTMASES! Anyone who wants to play in the show is welcome! Bring your tuba, euphonium or baritone at 3:30 PM, Sunday, December 3, for rehearsal in the Rozsa Lobby. There is a $10 registration fee.

Want to see the show? Please join us here in Houghton on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 7:30PM in the beautiful Rozsa Center Lobby for the sounds of Christmas and TUBAS! The evening concert is free and open to the public.

Fires in the Mirror

Tech Theatre presents Fires in the Mirror, a play by American playwright, author, actress and professor Anna Deavere Smith. It chronicles the viewpoints of people from tow different communities, Black and Jewish, connected directly and indirectly to the Crown Heights riot which occurred Fires in the Mirror Ain Crown Heights, Brooklyn in August 1991.

How can these things happen? A child is hit by a car while playing on the sidewalk. In retaliation, a young man is stabbed to death. A community turns inward upon itself, neighbor set against neighbor. Can an out of balance world be set right? Anna Deavere smith interviewed members of Brooklyn’s Crown Heights community and using their own words assembled a retelling of their solemn road from hate and violence to understanding.

Leading Scholars Competition

We are getting ready for our annual Leading Scholars competition and we’re looking for volunteers to help out with some group process type activities again.  We will have about 40 high school seniors visiting on December 3-4 to vie for the chance to receive full scholarships.

The session that we’re in need of volunteers for is called “Leadership in Action,” and the staff volunteers will evaluate students while they participate in the activities.  I will touch base with all volunteers as the event gets closer, but we’d need about 25 staff members to be ready to evaluate at 7:45 AM on Monday, December 4.  The event will wrap-up just before 10:00 AM.  (The events will take place on the ground floor of Wadsworth Hall.)

If folks are willing to lend a hand, just fill out this quick form at https://goo.gl/forms/hDPvjHooUXvOUgC82.

We very much appreciate all your help as we bring these awesome future Huskies to campus!

It’s time to start thinking about Winter Carnival 2018!

The theme this year is “Myths and Tales of the Past, in our Frigid Forecast”.

If you are planning on participating in Winter Carnival,  please join our Winter Carnival Email list for any and all updates regarding Winter Carnival.

In order to join follow this link:

https://groups.google.com/a/mtu.edu/forum/#!forum/wintercarnival-l

  1. Click the blue button that says “Join group to post”.
  2. Click “Join this group”.

There are also a few changes we would like to highlight for this year:

Window painting event has been replaced with “Banner Painting”.  The banners will then be hung in business windows in downtown Houghton during January and February.  A major change with this new event is that banners will need to be completed by December 15th in order for businesses to have adequate time to receive and display the banners.  Additional details regarding the event are listed in the rulebook.

Due to declining participation, the interactive statue competition will no longer be a judged event. Organizations wishing to build statues that require participant interaction are encouraged to do so by opting into the category on the month-long statue application. Any questions regarding this change can be directed to bkstatues@mtu.edu.

The final Stage Revue event held in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, February 7th will be free for all students thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Inter-Residence Housing Council (IRHC).  A valid student ID must be brought to the event for student admission.

Lastly, attached is a PDF copy of the Rulebook for Winter Carnival 2018.  All relevant dates to events, registrations, and meetings can be found there.

You can also find a copy of the Rulebook on Blue Key’s Involvement Link page, as well as on the Carnival website at: https://www.mtu.edu/carnival/

At this time, here are some upcoming dates and times for the next couple of weeks.

  • Entry forms for Month-Long Statues go live November 11 at 8:00am and close on December 6 at 5:00pm.

I hope that everyone is just as excited as we are for Winter Carnival 2018!

Faculty Present Listening to Parks, an NEA Imagine Your Parks Project

What do you hear when you walk in the woods? What are the natural sounds and rhythms of the forest? The lakes? The skies? Christopher Plummer, Libby Meyer, and Kent Cyr, faculty members in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Michigan Tech, with artist Steve Brimm, and artists from area schools, open a multimedia and soundscape installation as a part of their Listening to Parks project, with a reception on Saturday, December 2, at 5:00 PM in the Rozsa Gallery A-Space, to explore those questions.

Listening to Parks is an Imagine Your Parks project, an immersive installation based on collected images, video, and audio recordings from the Lake Superior National Parks:

Keweenaw National Historic Park

Isle Royale National Park

Apostle Islands National Lake Shore

Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore

Grand Portage National Monument.

In May, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Park Service (NPS) announced $1,067,500 in support of 50 Imagine Your Parks grants in 27 states, including an award of $20,000 to Michigan Technological University to support Listening to Parks.

The installation has been touring sites in the Upper Peninsula region, culminating in this exhibition. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. The recorded sounds from this project will also be used for a composition for orchestra by Libby Meyer to be performed by the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra at the Rozsa Center as part of the Sinfonia Antartica concert on Saturday, December 9 at 7:30 PM. Please visit the Listening to Parks Isle Royalewebsite for more details.   Follow “Imagine Your Parks” on Twitter @NEAarts and @NatlParkService, #ImagineYourParks #NEASpring16.
