Alumni Student Social in Dresden Scheduled for May 10, 2024

Stephanie Rowe, German professor in the Humanities Department, is hosting an Alumni Student event on Friday, May 10, 2024 during the faculty-led study abroad program Topics in Germany.  Event details and RSVP can be found on the alumni event page Dresden, Germany Alumni Student event, organized by Stephanie Rowe (’95), Associate Teaching Professor, MTU.

Alumni are invited to join the students for an evening on their study abroad, including a leisurely stroll through the Zwinger grounds, where students and alumni will have an opportunity to get to know each other, dinner at the Sophienkeller, and a walk past the porcelain Fürstenzug to Neumarkt, where we will cap of the evening  with a concert in the Frauenkirche.

Cumbria Faculty-Led Study Abroad Information Session

Street scene in EdinburghHumanities professor Dana Van Kooy, along with Carl Blair (SS), and Libby Meyer (VPA) will host an information session for Cumbria 2019, a faculty-led study abroad program in northern England and southern Scotland: summer, Track B. The session will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 10) in Fisher 130.

We welcome students from across campus. This program offers students an opportunity for foreign travel and for fulfilling HASS (humanities, arts and social sciences) and other General Education requirements in the fields of history, literature, music and archaeology. This session will provide students with information about course offerings, field trips, the application process, costs and scholarships.

Perú Faculty-Led Study Abroad Information Session

People standing in front of a large temple on a city street in Lima, PeruCarlos M. Amador will host an information session for the 2019 Lima, Perú Faculty-Led Study Abroad—Summer Track B. The session will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. today (Oct. 4) in the Walker Arts and Humanities HDMZ room 120A.

Students interested in study abroad, international minors and foreign travel are welcome to attend this meeting. Amador has led multiple study abroad trips in both Spanish and English. Information on scholarships, course offerings, pricing and international travel will be presented.

A Year in Germany Gives Michigan Tech Student New Insights

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 2.33.40 PMWhy would someone put acceptance to a prestigious law school on hold to spend a year in Germany?  That’s just what Russell Lawson did, and he doesn’t regret a minute of it.

Lawson, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in economics at Michigan Technological University in 2016, has been accepted into the University of Michigan Law School, but he chose to spend this year participating in the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program.  In Germany, he’s going to school, working a job, immersing himself in the culture.

Lawson calls the competitive program, known as the ‘’Parlamentarisches Patenschafts-Programm’’ in German, a “cultural exchange program aimed at promoting understanding and cooperation between the two countries.”  It includes 75 participants chosen from all over the US, representing a majority of states and multiple fields of study. “We have engineers, bio chem majors, those who study music, politics, international relations, two welders and four chefs/bakers, really a diverse group,” Lawson explains.

Student Spends a Summer in Germany

image147648-rsideEthan Klein, a third year mechanical engineering student with a minor in German at Michigan Tech has always had a fascination for Germany and German culture.

So you can imagine how excited he was to have been chosen to participate in a Cultural Vistas Fellowship program in Germany.

Cultural Vistas Fellowship awards a select group of students the opportunity to travel abroad, with the goal of increasing understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship in a global market. The two-month program destinations include Germany, India and Argentina. The students undergo an intensive two-day training program in New York prior to departure, preparing them to live and work in their selected countries; they then share their experiences in New York once again, when they return.

Klein, whose fascination with German history is fueled by his family ancestry, was thrilled to have the opportunity to not only go to Germany, but to secure an internship where he and his team members worked on a testing apparatus for linear led lighting systems.

When Klein was younger, his family hosted a German exchange student, Matthias Straubinger. Klein’s family kept in contact with Matthias over the years. Klein was very pleased to be able to spend time with Matthias while in Germany. The two toured some of the local sights, including a historic park in the Grunewald Forest and a castle built in 1542 by Prince-Elector Joachim II.

“My Study Abroad to Barcelona has taught me how to understand how history and memories influence culture. In addition, I have learned to apply the observations in film, literature, politics, and everyday life to fully comprehend how a city shapes you. This is why we need humanities, they challenge us to think critically in a way we never have before. No one fully understands the importance of studying abroad until you’ve had the experience yourself.”

Emily Wolbeck wins Global Literacy Award

Emily Wolbeck is a Senior Materials Science Major at MTU

Global literacy is one of Michigan Tech’s eight student learning goals that were put in place in order to strengthen innovative student-centered programs and activities. Specifically, global literacy is the idea that students should be able to interact in meaningful ways with people of different cultures. In order to accomplish this goal, students are encouraged to strengthen their global knowledge and tolerance through the study of language and cultures.

This year, the Global Literacy Award was given to Material Science major, Emily Wolbeck. Emily will be a Senior in Fall working towards graduating in the Spring of 2014 with a Bachelors degree in Material Science along with an International French minor. She is also enrolled in the Pavlis Institute for Global Technological Leadership certificate program as well as active with IGTAAP – a program involved in aiding international teaching assistants in English skills and presentation strategies.

The money that Emily won will be used for her trip to study in Malta this summer. While abroad, Emily will lead a project with Mind Trekkers as well as student involvement in the Maltese Aviation Museum to help the museum portray American participation in the Air Battle of Malta during World War II.

Last summer, Emily studied art and photography in Paris where she was very comfortable conversing because of her French minor. However, she is looking forward to visiting a country where she doesn’t know the language because it gives her experiences to bring back to her IGTAAP students. “I think that working in a country where I cannot speak the language will give me good experience that I can share with my students” said Wolbeck. “We can compare notes with eachother.”

After graduation, Emily hopes to end up in Minnesota working in the Green Sector, still involved with her favorite hobby – photography, and making use of her experiences abroad.
