CCI Systems Donates Computer, Networking Equipment

CCI Systems, a networks solution company headquartered in Iron Mountain, Michigan, has donated 50 pieces of computer and networking equipment to the School of Business and Economics at Michigan Tech.

The donation will support the new Information Systems Student Lab of the Management Information Systems (MIS) program, created to give Michigan Tech students an opportunity to experiment with industry hardware and software in a free-form environment.

The MIS faculty reached out to industry partners from their advisory board, asking for gently-used, commercial-grade equipment for networking and computing. CCI Systems, one of the advisory board’s industry partners, put together a large donation that exceeded the MIS program’s expectations.

“The MIS students at Michigan Tech will benefit substantially from this opportunity to learn about networking and cyber security technologies through hands-on experimentation in a safe lab environment,” said Jeffrey Wall, assistant professor of management information systems at Michigan Tech. “The lab will provide them with further opportunities to experiment and interact with different operating systems and programs. The School of Business and Economics and the Management Information Systems faculty greatly appreciate CCI Systems’ generous donation of lab equipment.”

MIS advisory board member Evan Rice, director of information and analysis services at CCI Systems, said, “CCI believes in what the MIS program is trying to achieve. The future of our business depends on new, highly capable, technical professionals entering the job market. We find that Michigan Tech is uniquely positioned, both technologically and geographically, to provide those future employees. So for us, giving back to these programs is a no-brainer.”

Need a course? Make it easier with advanced search

Find classes to meet your general education requirements.  Using the “Attribute Search” will help you find classes available for a particular semester.

Advanced functions are available to search for classes on this site here

After you select the term (Spring 2017, Summer 2017) you will go to the search functions (see picture below)

  1. SUBJECT:  Select multiple subjects by using the “Ctrl” + right click function or you can select all subjects with a left mouse click and highlight all subjects by dragging down.
  2. CAMPUS:  If wanting online courses select “MTU Online” in “Campus” search.   NOTE most online options are available in Summer terms.
  3. PART OF TERM:  AKA Track A (1st Half of Term) or Track B (2nd Half of Term) is helpful especially in Summer to select the track you would wish to take a class.
  4. ATTRIBUTE TYPE:  Finally…need a course to fulfill a particular General Education requirement (attribute) such as a HUFA (Humanities and Fine Arts) course? This can provide a list of courses available to fulfill a requirement for a particular semester.  TIP:  Select multiple subjects or subjects you are interested in

Dr. Mari W. Buche – 11th Annual Midwest AIS Conference

Dr. Mari W. Buche, director of the Data Science Graduate Program and associate professor of Management Information Systems (SBE), attended the 11th Annual Midwest AIS conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 19-20. The theme for this year’s event was “Bigger, Smarter, Safer: Game Changers for Information Systems.”

Buche participated on a panel entitled “Privacy, technology and surveillance in the digital age: the Big Brother scenario.” The panel focused on redefining privacy expectations and generational gaps in fundamental interpretations of information security. Reference material for this panel was Can ‘Big Brother’ watch us?

Buche also presented a research-in-progress paper entitled “The influence of Outcome-Oriented Security Policy on Security Perceptions and Intentions,” co-authored with Jeff Wall (SBE). The study investigates expected improvements when corporations enhance traditional checklist-oriented information security policies (ISPs) with an outcomes-oriented policy. Intrinsic motivation and employee commitment will be measured in an experimental design study.

Fall and Summer 2016 Registration

Fall Registration will begin towards the end of March.   Here is the Fall 2016 Priority Schedule  for registration.  Your registration time is based on your current credits earned (does not include current credits you are registered for).
Prior to Fall Advising Appointments
  • Run your Audit in Banweb (DARS)   *tip: Run “Latest” and not a possible program from the drop down menu
  • Review your Degree Requirements
  • Develop a proposed Fall course list
  • Note any questions or concerns about your Audit
  • Schedule an Advising Appointment if necessary (especially if a few semesters from graduation or have not met with an advisor in 2-3 semesters)
To schedule an appointment, go through Google Calendar.  
  • Use your Advisor, Jodie Filpus-Paakola’s email jrfilpus@mtu.edu in the guest invite on the right
  • View my availability against yours using “find a time” tab next to “event details” at the left
  • In the subject please indicate the following Last Name, First Name:  Advising
  • Please allow for 30-45 minutes for our appointment
Jodie will be holding walk in office hours during registration following Spring Break (no appointment needed)
Monday-Friday between hours of 9 a.m.-Noon and 2 p.m.-4 p.m.
  • March 14-18 and
  • March 21-25
Summer Registration has been available since the Fall.  If you plan to register for Summer courses please do this sooner rather than later.  Some departments are considering low course enrollment currently to make decisions if a course will get dropped from the Summer schedule.

MIS student achieves Capital One Academic All-District First-Team honors

BG_KwangMichigan Tech women’s tennis player Kwang Suthijindawong (Bangkok, Thailand) has earned Capital One Academic All-District First-Team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Suthijindawong was selected as one of 13 female Division II student-athletes from the Midwest Region in the at-large category, which includes the sports of bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, tennis, hockey, rifle, skiing, swimming and tennis.

Tech’s No. 1 singles player, Suthijindawong was named the Huskies’ first GLIAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year last fall after a 12-0 league singles record. The junior completed her third perfect season in GLIAC singles (36-0). She posted a 17-1 overall record in singles, falling in the championship match of the ITA Midwest Regional singles draw. Suthijindawong and partner Sandra Cvetanovic posted 15 wins in doubles on their way to becoming the ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Champions—the first in school history.

In the classroom, Suthijindawong owns a 3.57 cumulative grade point average in management information systems.

Suthijindawong is eligible for Academic All-America recognition, which will be announced June. 10.
