Embark on a journey that will enhance your academic credentials and empower you to make a meaningful impact on the world.

A collaboration between the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences,Sustainability in Sweden is an immersive, interdisciplinary program connecting forest health, art, climate change, and community engagement. Environmental stewardship and interdisciplinary field experience are the core of this program.

Sustainability in Sweden is part of Sister Forests—an ongoing environmental arts project that links the forests of Björkö-Arholma, Sweden with those of the Keweenaw, fostering a deep sense of community and global responsibility.

MTU Joins National Student Exchange Consortium

https://www.mtu.edu/ttoday/?issue=20240912#mtu-joins-national-student-exchange-consortium

International Programs and Services (IPS) at Michigan Tech is excited to announce MTU’s admission into the National Student Exchange (NSE) consortium.

NSE is a not-for-profit membership consortium of regionally accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Membership provides affordable and accessible collegiate study away opportunities by allowing MTU students to attend any other participating NSE university for a semester or academic year while still enrolled at Michigan Tech.

Participating colleges and universities include top research universities, NCAA Division I sports schools and campuses of all sizes and locations. These include small Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLACs) and private colleges; campuses located in big cities, mountain ranges and on beaches/islands; language immersion campuses in Puerto Rico and Quebec; and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Hispanic serving institutions (HSIs) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions (AANAPISIs).

IPS is excited to offer the various benefits of participating in NSE to Michigan Tech students, including broadening their educational perspectives, gaining intercultural perspective and understanding, and making connections in new job markets.

We kindly ask that you share the news of this membership with any students you feel may be interested in participating in a semester away with NSE. Students are welcome to submit any inquiries to studyabroad@mtu.edu or visit our Study Away and Abroad Experiences page to schedule a study away advising appointment.

Likewise, we look forward to welcoming students from other participating universities and introducing them to all of the wonderful opportunities that Michigan Tech and the Houghton area have to provide.

NASA DEVELOP Program Spring 2025 Opportunities

NASA DEVELOP projects focus on helping local, national, and international communities address their environmental concerns while utilizing NASA’s Earth observing fleet of satellites. For the Spring 2025 term, NASA DEVELOP will operate at thirteen locations across the country at NASA Centers and other regional locations. This is a great opportunity for participants who are interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS, specifically in the field of Earth Science. Participants will work with NASA scientists, partner organizations, and science advisors to learn about the use of NASA Earth science data for use in water resources, disaster management, ecological conservation, and other applications to address environmental community concerns.

Responsibilities will include: literature review, data processing and analysis, and producing deliverables, such as a technical report, presentation, and video. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial, is not required for acceptance. This is a multi-disciplinary opportunity for all those interested in Earth science and we encourage those in the social sciences, general science, engineering, computer science, etc. to apply.

Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. Days of the week are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to 20 – 29 hours per week during the term. The position is paid on an hourly basis that is determined by education level and working location.

We are hosting virtual “About DEVELOP” webinars on 9/6 2-3pm ET and 9/24 4-5pm ET in an effort to provide information about our capacity building program and how potential candidates can apply and participate in the program. Please see the attached flyer for details on joining these events.

Details about this opportunity and how to apply can be found online at https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/nasadevelop. The Spring 2025 application window is open online until October 4th, with the term taking place from January 27th-April 4th. Please note some DEVELOP locations will allow for in-person opportunities while others will be completely virtual. For virtual locations, all accepted participants must work remotely from within the United States. Details on location status are posted on our website.

Additionally, if you know of decision-makers who would like to submit a NASA DEVELOP project idea, details can be found online at https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/what-we-do/capacity-building/develop/partner. Please share this message with anyone who may be interested in these opportunities, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thank you,

Tallis Monteiro

NASA DEVELOP National Program | North Carolina – NCEI

Scholarship: WTBA Engineering Scholarships

WTBA awards two $5,000 Engineering Scholarships and two $3,000 Engineering Tech Scholarships each January at our Contractor-Engineer Conference.  Winners are encouraged to attend the ceremony for special recognition.

Students studying civil engineering, construction management, engineering tech, and other transportation construction-related fields are welcome to apply.

While most candidates fall into those fields of study and/or on our listed universities, colleges, and tech schools, any student who can demonstrate a clear interest in a potential career in the industry is also encouraged to apply.

Applications open Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024.  They’ll stay open until Friday, Nov. 15, 2024 but we encourage applicants to submit their forms and required documents early.  Last year, we saw double the number of typical applications.

More information and the application link are available at: wtba.org/scholarships/

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I also ask you to send this message along to anyone in your department who I may have missed.  Apologies if you received this by mistake – I’m casting a fairly wide net.
