Curious about LEAN?

Are you curious about Lean and continuous improvement? Want to find a way to boost your resume? Looking for a new way to be more productive and organized? Well, here is your chance. Mark your calendars.

Students, we are hosting an information session for you on from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25 in the East Reading Room of the Library. There will be food, refreshments and a learning opportunity or two. You may not know much about lean right now, but employers do, and it is a valuable professional skill that could help you land your next interview or job. This information session is a great way to be introduced to the skills in an informal setting, and to find out about other opportunities for you, on campus, to increase your skills.

Summer Undergrad Research

Please see below for information regarding two summer opportunities for undergraduate research. Minority participation is highly encouraged! The applications open in November and will be due Jan 29, 2018. If you have any questions please email the program coordinator (locheta@caryinstitute.org). In addition, if your students do apply please let me know!

– The Cary Institute’s REU program on Translational Ecology for undergraduates (http://www.caryinstitute.org/students/reu-program). It is a 12-week program involving 10 students in ecology-related projects every summer.

– The Urban Water Innovation Network undergraduate research program (https://erams.com/UWIN/urp/). This one is not an NSF-REU program. It is funded by the Urban Water Innovation Network UWIN, a consortium of institutions across the US focused on urban water sustainability issues.  It is a 9-week program in which 10 students are hosted at different institutions from the Network. Because UWIN is multi-disciplinary, we select students from different disciplines (engineer, social sciences, natural sciences) but with a common interest in urban water issues.

Study Abroad: France (UPDATE)

We will have several information session during this semester to address student fears, concerns and any other questions they might have about study abroad and/or about this particular program in Paris, such as application process, scholarship opportunities and financial aid.

Who has not dreamed of spending a summer in France?

During this faculty-led program, you will be able to explore and discover what makes France such a cultural center. We offer a variety of classes in English (French lit, French and Francophone culture, International Experience) and even a French class adapted to your level/need, to guarantee full immersion for the length of 6 weeks. You will get the opportunity to meet locals, other foreign students and foremost, you get the opportunity to enhance your learning experience and enrich your life!

11th Annual D80 Conference – Oct. 14th

11th Annual D80 Conference

The D80 Conference is a dialog and celebration of our efforts to solve issues that confront the world’s poorest 80%. The Michigan Tech campus hosts this annual conference in the fall every year to give a platform to the voices of university students serving communities in need, both domestically and abroad. Our conferences highlight service and research work done by students from Michigan Tech and elsewhere, and are open to anybody interested in development, design, and discovery for the poorest 80% of humanity. The public is always welcome.

The theme for the annual D80 Conference is Connect, Collaborate, Create! We are very excited to welcome Cathy Leslie, Executive Director of Engineers Without Borders-USA, as our featured keynote speaker.

The 2017 conference will be held Saturday, Oct. 14th in the U. J. Noblet Forestry Atrium. More information regarding the conference and registration can be found at mtu.edu/honors/D80/conference.

This year’s conference is sponsored by Michigan Tech’s D80 Center, the Sustainable Futures Institute, and the Pavlis Honors College.

There will also be a free showing of Poverty Inc. at 5:30 pm on Friday, October 13th in Fisher 135. This documentary discusses the global and local impacts of the international aid industry through personal and professional experiences.

Scholarship: ACEC/Michigan

Application Deadline is January 5, 2018

ACEC/Michigan is planning to award over $12,000 to engineering and surveying students enrolled in an ABET accredited College or University. Applications are now available on the ACEC/M website, and are due to ACEC by January 5, 2018. Applicants will be judged on a written essay, their work experience, employer/faculty recommendations, community involvement and their GPA.

Fleis & VanderBrink is looking for upcoming (December) graduates  interested in traffic and transportation.

They are looking to hire one or two new grads that have an ability to do public speaking, can work in a very fast paced environment, is very good technically, a fast learner and is really passionate about traffic operations and design-or wants to be.

If yes, they would love to talk to you and see if they would be interested in joining our group in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Their group does about 75% of all of the traffic impact studies in Michigan and are looking to grow that number.  Some of their clients include Meijer, Kroger and Amazon. Fleis & VanderBrink also work with municipalities such as Livonia, Birmingham and Brighton Twp in addition to traffic studies they perform as part of MDOT contracts.  This is only a fraction of the diversity of work that they perform in this group and with some great new grads with fresh ideas they can take the group to the next level.
