Associate of State Dame Safety Officials – Student Paper Competition

ASDSO invites students to enter the Student Paper Competition, open to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees at U.S. universities or colleges. We invite students to submit papers on dam and levee safety!

Topics may include traditional areas of design engineering, structural and geotechnical analysis, hydrology, hydraulics, construction, risk management and hazard mitigation, emergency action planning, dam security, and policy. In addition, case studies, emerging and innovative technologies, and senior capstone projects are encouraged.

Each winning paper will receive $500 and a travel stipend to present at Dam Safety 2018 in Seattle, WA, in September 2018. Winning papers will also be published in the annual conference proceedings. Other selected entries will be invited to participate in the Dam Safety 2018 Poster & Lightning Talk Forum. Conference registration fees will be waived for all participating students enrolled in colleges or universities in the U.S. who present a valid student ID (that’s a $1000 value!). Both US citizens and non-US citizens are eligible.

All student entries must include a 350-word (maximum) abstract, and should be submitted online. The student paper competition also requires an executive summary of at least 1,200 words. (Please note: the full paper is not due at the deadline, only the abstract and executive summary, so please send in your ideas!). Call for Posters – Michigan Tech World Water Day 2018 – March 27-28, 2018

To Graduate and Undergraduate students:

Michigan Tech is celebrating World Water Day 2018 during the week of March 26. The Great Lakes Research Center is sponsoring the World Water Day Poster Competition, using the United Nations World Water Day theme, “Nature-based Solutions for Water.”

Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to participate in the World Water Day Poster Competition, which includes 2 categories of cash awards:

Original Research posters typically represent thesis and research work related to any aspect of water.
Coursework/Informational posters present coursework or literature based research. They can be assigned in a course to individuals or groups of students, or can be entered independently.

Posters in the Original Research category may or may not be relevant to the “Nature-based Solutions for Water” theme of World Water Day, but additional points are awarded to the Coursework/Informational posters if they incorporate the “Nature-based Solutions for Water” theme.

Note: we are planning to display the posters digitally on TV monitors in the Dow conference rooms for the judging process this year. The printed versions will be on display Tuesday and Wednesday, March 27-28 in the Dow Lobby, campus-side, but Powerpoint Slides will need to be submitted to Carol Asiala (glrcadmin-l@mtu.edu) by March 25, so they can be prepared for display on the computers in the conference rooms.

Scholarship: ASCE MI Section

The Michigan Section of the ASCE encourages the advancement of the Civil Engineering profession by qualified and interested students. To that end, the ASCE Michigan Section offers financial support through two scholarships. These scholarships have been endowed through the efforts and generosity of individual Civil Engineers and leading Civil Engineering companies throughout Michigan. Applications are due by Memorial Day.

Mackinac Scholarship

Named in honor of Michigan’s #1 Civil Engineering Project of the 20th Century by the ASCE Michigan Section membership in December 1999, the Mackinac Scholarship is intended to recognize a premier Civil Engineering student from Michigan. The award will be presented annually, and will consist of a two-year grant of $5,000 each year (totaling $10,000 over a two-year period) to a student entering his or her junior year at an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program. The award considers merit, personal initiative, and financial need and encourages both participation in a student chapter of ASCE and contributions to the advancement of student engineering.

Zuidema Scholarship

Named in honor of an outstanding Past-President of the Michigan Section and the Western Michigan Branch of ASCE, the Marvin L. Zuidema Scholarship Award is presented annually to a student member of ASCE who has made a contribution to the advancement of student engineering activities. This award will consist of a one-time grant of $1,500, and considers academic performance as an indication of preparation

for a future career in Civil Engineering. The Zuidema scholarship is available to either a junior or senior in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering program.
